ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਕਾਲੇ ਨੈਣ ਹਿਰਨੀ ਵਾਂਗ ਸੁਸ਼ੋਭਿਤ ਸਨ,
Shyam (the poet) says, ‘The eyes like a she-deer predominated her looks.
ਜੀਤਿਲਈਸਸਿਕੀਕਲਾਯਾਤੇਸਸਿਯਾਨਾਮ॥੭॥
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਚੰਦ੍ਰਮਾ ਦੀ ਕਲਾ ਨੂੰ ਜਿਤ ਲਿਆ ਸੀ, ਇਸ ਲਈ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ 'ਸਸਿਯਾ' ਸੀ ॥੭॥
‘As she had won over Kala, the art of Shashi (the Moon), she was named Sassi Kala.(7)

ਭਾਂਤ ਭਾਂਤ ਦੇ ਵਾਜੇ ਵਜਾਉਂਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਉਥੇ ਆ ਗਏ।
All the people from the place came. They were playing musical instruments of various types.
ਮਿਲਿਮਿਲਗੀਤਸਭੈਸੁਭਗਾਵਹਿ॥
ਸਭ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਸ਼ੁਭ ਗੀਤ ਗਾ ਰਹੇ ਸਨ
ਸਸਿਯਹਿਹੇਰਿਸਭੈਬਲਿਜਾਵਹਿ॥੮॥
ਅਤੇ ਸਸਿਯਾ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਨਿਛਾਵਰ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਸਨ ॥੮॥
In unison, they were singing and appreciating Sassi Kala.(8)

Naad, Nafiri, Kanrre and various other instruments transmitted the
ਤਰੁਨਿਬ੍ਰਿਧਿਬਾਲਾਜਿਤੀਗ੍ਰਿਹਮਹਿਰਹੀਨਏਕ॥੯॥
ਜਵਾਨ, ਬਿਰਧ, ਬਾਲਿਕਾ ਜਿਤਨੀਆਂ ਵੀ ਸਨ, ਇਕ ਵੀ ਘਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਨਾ ਰਹੀ (ਸਭ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖਣ ਲਈ ਆ ਗਈਆਂ) ॥੯॥

ਦੋਹਾਂ (ਪੁਨੂੰ ਅਤੇ ਸਸਿਯਾ) ਦੀ ਸੁੰਦਰਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ਜਾ ਰਹੀਆਂ ਸਨ।
No damsel stayed behind at home and all were offering tributes to them both.
ਇਹਭੀਤਰਪੁੰਨੂਕਹੁਕੋਹੈ॥
ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਪੁੰਨੂੰ ਕਿਹੜਾ ਹੈ?

ਢੋਲ ਅਤੇ ਮ੍ਰਿਦੰਗ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਘਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਵਜ ਰਹੇ ਸਨ, ਇਸ ਨਗਰ ਵਿਚ ਖ਼ੂਬ ਸ਼ੋਰ ਸ਼ਰਾਬਾ ਹੈ।
The drums and mirdang were being beaten and they were showering bliss in every home.
ਗਾਵਤਗੀਤਬਜਾਵਤਤਾਲਦਿਵਾਵਤਆਵਤਿਨਾਗਰਿਗਾਰੀ॥
ਸ਼ਹਿਰਨਾਂ ਗੀਤ ਗਾਉਂਦੀਆਂ ਸਨ, ਤਾੜੀਆਂ ਵਜਾਉਂਦੀਆਂ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਗਾਲ੍ਹੀਆਂ ਦਿੰਦੀਆਂ ਆ ਰਹੀਆਂ ਸਨ।
Musical tunes were flowing in unison, and the village people were coming forward.

ਇਕੋ ਵਾਰ ਹੀ ਹਜ਼ਾਰਾਂ ਭੇਰੀਆਂ ਵਜ ਉਠੀਆਂ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਛਬੀਲੀਆਂ ਇਸਤਰੀਆਂ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਹਸ ਰਹੀਆਂ ਸਨ।
Thousands of the trumpets were played and the women, jovially, frolicked around.
ਦੇਹਿਅਸੀਸਕਹੈਂਜਗਦੀਸਇਹਜੋਰੀਜਿਯੋਜੁਗਚਾਰਿਤਿਹਾਰੀ॥੧੧॥
(ਸਾਰੀਆਂ) ਅਸੀਸ ਦਿੰਦੀਆਂ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਕਹਿੰਦੀਆਂ ਸਨ। ਹੇ ਜਗਦੀਸ਼! ਤੇਰੀ (ਬਣਾਈ ਹੋਈ) ਇਹ ਜੋੜੀ ਚੌਹਾਂ ਯੁਗਾਂ ਤਕ ਜੀਉਂਦੀ ਰਹੇ ॥੧੧॥
They all were blessing that the couple might live for ever.(11)
ਰੂਪਅਪਾਰਲਖੈਨ੍ਰਿਪਕੋਪੁਰਬਾਸਿਨਕੌਉਪਜਿਯੋਸੁਖਭਾਰੋ॥
ਰਾਜੇ ਦੇ ਆਪਾਰ ਰੂਪ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਨਗਰ ਵਾਸੀਆਂ (ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ) ਬਹੁਤ ਅਧਿਕ ਸੁਖ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ।
Seeing the handsomeness of the Raja, the inhabitants were exhilarated.
ਭੀਰਭਈਨਰਨਾਰਿਨਕੀਸਭਹੂੰਸਭਸੋਕਬਿਦਾਕਰਿਡਾਰੋ॥
ਨਰ ਨਾਰੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਭੀੜ ਲਗ ਗਈ ਅਤੇ ਸਭ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੰਤਾਪ ਖ਼ਤਮ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੇ।
The men and the women swarmed after getting rid of all their afflictions
ਪੂਰਨਪੁੰਨ੍ਯਪ੍ਰਤਾਪਤੇਆਜੁਮਿਲਿਯੋਮਨਭਾਵਤਮੀਤਪਿਯਾਰੋ॥
(ਪਿਛਲੇ ਜਨਮਾਂ ਦੇ) ਪੂਰਨ ਪੁੰਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਤਾਪ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਮਨ ਭਾਉਂਦਾ ਮਿਤਰ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹੈ।
Full contentment prevailed and all the friends felt their desires fulfilled.
ਆਵਤਜਾਹਿਕਹੈਮਨਮਾਹਿਸੁਬਾਲਜੀਓਪਤਿਲਾਲਤਿਹਾਰੋ॥੧੨॥
ਆਉਂਦਿਆਂ ਜਾਂਦਿਆਂ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ (ਇਹੀ) ਕਹਿੰਦੇ। ਹੇ ਬਾਲਿਕਾ! ਤੇਰਾ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਪਤੀ ਜੀਉਂਦਾ ਰਹੇ ॥੧੨॥
Coming and going they blessed, ‘Your love with your spouse may prevail for ever.’(12)
ਕੇਸਰਿਅੰਗਬਰਾਤਿਨਕੇਛਿਰਕੇਮਿਲਿਬਾਲਸੁਆਨੰਦਜੀਕੇ॥
ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਆਨੰਦ ਵਧਾ ਕੇ ਕੁੜੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਬਰਾਤੀਆਂ ਉਤੇ ਕੇਸਰ ਛਿੜਕਿਆ।
Collectively, women sprinkled saffron over the men in the marriage party.
ਛੈਲਨਿਛੈਲਛਕੇਚਹੂੰਓਰਨਗਾਵਤਗੀਤਸੁਹਾਵਤਨੀਕੇ॥
ਇਸਤਰੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਮਰਦ ਬਹੁਤ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਚੌਹਾਂ ਪਾਸਿਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਗੀਤ ਗਾਉਂਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਬਹੁਤ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਲਗ ਰਹੇ ਸਨ।
All the men and women were fully gratified and from both sides happy songs were emerging.
ਰਾਜਕੋਰੂਪਲਖੇਅਤਿਹੀਗਨਰਾਜਨਕੇਸਭਲਾਗਤਫੀਕੇ॥
ਰਾਜੇ (ਭਾਵ ਪੁੰਨੂੰ) ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਬਾਕੀ) ਸਭ ਰਾਜਿਆਂ ਦਾ (ਰੂਪ) ਫਿਕਾ ਲਗਦਾ ਸੀ।
Seeing the magnanimity of the Raja, the other rulers were smitten with inferiority complex.
ਯੌਮੁਸਕਾਹਿਕਹੈਮਨਮਾਹਿਸਭੇਬਲਿਜਾਹਿਪਿਯਾਰੀਕੇਪੀਕੇ॥੧੩॥
(ਉਹ) ਸਾਰੇ ਹੱਸ ਕੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਇੰਜ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਸਨ ਕਿ ਪਿਆਰੀ (ਰਾਜ ਕੁਮਾਰੀ) ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਤੋਂ ਵਾਰੇ ਵਾਰੇ ਜਾਈਏ ॥੧੩॥
And they all pronounced with one voice, ‘We are sacrifice to the lovely lady and her lover.’(13)
ਸਾਤਸੁਹਾਗਨਿਲੈਬਟਨੋਘਸਿਲਾਵਤਹੈਪਿਯਕੇਤਨਮੈ॥
(ਸ਼ਗਨ ਵਜੋਂ) ਸੱਤ ਸੁਹਾਗਣਾਂ ਵਟਣਾ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਰੀਰ ਉਤੇ ਮਲਦੀਆਂ ਸਨ
Seven ladies came and applied watna, the beautifying body-lotion, to the suitor.
ਮੁਰਛਾਇਲੁਭਾਇਰਹੀਅਬਲਾਲਖਿਲਾਲਚੀਲਾਲਤਿਸੀਛਿਨਮੈ॥
ਅਤੇ ਇਸਤਰੀਆਂ (ਉਸ ਨੂੰ) ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਉਸੇ ਛਿਣ ਲਲਚਾ ਕੇ ਬੇਹੋਸ਼ ਹੋ ਰਹੀਆਂ ਸਨ।
His sensual body was making them to swoon and ponder,
ਨ੍ਰਿਪਰਾਜਸੁਰਾਜਤਹੈਤਿਨਮੋਲਖਿਯੌਉਪਮਾਉਪਜੀਮਨਮੈ॥
ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਰਾਜੇ ਨੂੰ ਸ਼ੋਭਦਾ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ (ਕਵੀ ਦੇ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਉਪਮਾ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਈ
‘How magnificently he is seated among the Rajas, and is being complimented.
ਸਜਿਸਾਜਿਬਰਾਜਤਹੈਸੁਮਨੋਨਿਸਿਰਾਜਨਛਤ੍ਰਨਕੇਗਨਮੈ॥੧੪॥
ਮਾਨੋ ਚੰਦ੍ਰਮਾ ਪੂਰੀ ਸਜ-ਧਜ ਨਾਲ ਤਾਰਿਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਸ਼ੋਭ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੋਵੇ ॥੧੪॥
‘He seems like the Moon enthroned amidst his subject of stars.’(14)
ਸਿੰਧੁਕੇਸੰਖਸੁਰੇਸਕੇਆਵਜਸੂਰਕੇਨਾਦਸੁਨੈਦਰਵਾਜੇ॥
ਸਿੰਧ (ਪ੍ਰਦੇਸ਼ ਦੇ) ਰਾਜੇ ਦੇ ਦੁਆਰ ਤੇ ਇੰਦਰ ਅਤੇ ਸੂਰਜ (ਦੇਵਤਾ ਦੇ) ਸੰਖਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਵਾਜਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਆਵਾਜ਼ ਸੁਣਾਈ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਸੀ।
‘The conch-shells taken out of the River Sindh are blown sweetly along with the Indra’s trumpets.
ਮੌਜਨਕੇਮੁਰਲੀਮਧੁਰੀਧੁਨਿਦੇਵਨਕੇਬਹੁਦੁੰਦਭਿਬਾਜੇ॥
ਮੁਰਲੀ ਦੀ ਮਿੱਠੀ ਮਿੱਠੀ ਆਵਾਜ਼ ਦੀਆਂ ਲਹਿਰਾਂ ਉਠ ਰਹੀਆਂ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਦੇਵਤਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਨਗਾਰੇ ਵਜ ਰਹੇ ਸਨ।
‘The sweet waves from the flutes are accompanying the drum-beats of the gods.
ਜੀਤਕੇਜੋਗਮਹੇਸਨਕੇਮੁਖਮੰਗਲਕੇਗ੍ਰਿਹਮੰਦਲਰਾਜੇ॥
ਰਾਜੇ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਜਿਤ ਦੇ ਨਗਾਰੇ ਵਜ ਰਹੇ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਤੋਂ ਮੰਗਲਮਈ ਧੁੰਨਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਵਾਜੇ ਵਜ ਰਹੇ ਸਨ।
‘It is the jovial atmosphere same as the ambience at the winning of war.’
ਬ੍ਯਾਹਤਹੀਨ੍ਰਿਪਰਾਜਤਬੈਅਤਿਆਨੰਦਕੇਅਤਿਆਨਕਬਾਜੇ॥੧੫॥
ਰਾਜੇ ਦਾ ਵਿਆਹ ਹੁੰਦਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਬਹੁਤ ਆਨੰਦ-ਦਾਇਕ ਵਾਜੇ ਵੱਜਣ ਲਗੇ ਸਨ ॥੧੫॥
As soon as the marriage took place, the blissful musical instruments showered the melodies.(15)
ਬ੍ਯਾਹਭਯੋਜਬਹੀਇਹਸੋਤਬਬਾਤਸੁਨੀਨ੍ਰਿਪਕੀਬਰਨਾਰੀ॥
ਜਦੋਂ ਇਧਰ (ਪੁੰਨੂੰ ਦਾ) ਵਿਆਹ (ਸਸਿਯਾ ਨਾਲ) ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਤਾਂ (ਪੁੰਨੂ) ਰਾਜੇ ਦੀਆਂ (ਪਹਿਲੀਆਂ) ਪਤਨੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਗੱਲ ਸੁਣੀ।
As soon as the marriage had taken place, news reached the first wed, the principal Rani (of Punnu).
ਚੌਕਿਰਹੀਅਤਿਹੀਚਿਤਮੈਕਛੁਔਰਹੁਤੀਅਬਔਰਬਿਚਾਰੀ॥
ਉਹ ਚਿਤ ਵਿਚ ਹੈਰਾਨ ਹੋ ਗਈਆਂ। ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਕੁਝ ਹੋਰ ਸਨ, ਹੁਣ ਹੋਰ ਹੋ ਗਈਆਂ (ਅਰਥਾਤ ਨਵੀਂ ਸੌਂਕਣ ਨੂੰ ਸਹਿਣ ਤੋਂ ਸੰਕੋਚ ਕਰਨ ਲਗੀਆਂ)।
She was astonished and she changed her attitude towards the Raja.
ਮੰਤ੍ਰਕਰੇਲਿਖਿਜੰਤ੍ਰਘਨੇਅਰੁਤੰਤ੍ਰਨਸੋਇਹਬਾਤਸੁਧਾਰੀ॥
ਕਈ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਪੜ੍ਹੇ, ਕਿਤਨੇ ਜੰਤ੍ਰ ਲਿਖੇ ਅਤੇ ਤੰਤ੍ਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਇਹ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕੀਤਾ
She indulged in magical spell, and wrote mystical anecdotes to straighten the matter,
ਲਾਗੀਉਚਾਟਰਹੇਚਿਤਮੈਕਬਹੂੰਨਸੁਹਾਇਪਿਯਾਕੋਪਿਆਰੀ॥੧੬॥
ਕਿ (ਨਵੀਂ ਵਿਆਹੀ ਹੋਈ) ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮਾ ਸਦਾ ਉਦਾਸ ਰਹੇ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰੀ ਨਾ ਲਗੇ ॥੧੬॥
And performed the spells so that the woman (Sassi) would not appease her husband and (he might) get red of her.(16)

ਨੀਦਭੂਖਿਸਿਗਰੀਹੀਭਾਗੀ॥
ਅਤੇ ਸਾਰੀ ਨੀਂਦਰ ਅਤੇ ਭੁਖ ਖ਼ਤਮ ਹੋ ਗਈ।
She (Sassi) was discontented, she lost her sleep and her appetite was ruined.
ਸੋਤਉਠੈਚਕਿਕਛੁਨਸੁਹਾਵੈ॥
ਸੁਤੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈਰਾਨ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਉਠ ਖੜੋਂਦੀ ਅਤੇ ਕੁਝ ਵੀ ਚੰਗਾ ਨਾ ਲਗਦਾ।
ਗ੍ਰਿਹਕੋਛੋਰਿਬਾਹਰੋਧਾਵੈ॥੧੭॥
ਘਰ ਨੂੰ ਛਡ ਕੇ ਬਾਹਰ ਨੂੰ ਭਜਦੀ ॥੧੭॥
She would suddenly awake and feel strange and would abandon her home to run out.(l7)
