ਦਿਨਲੋਗਨਦੇਖਤਗਯੋਭੇਦਨਜਾਨਤਕੋਇ॥੭॥
ਦਿਨ ਦਿਹਾੜੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਵੇਖਦਿਆਂ (ਉਹ) ਚਲਾ ਗਿਆ, (ਪਰ) ਕੋਈ ਵੀ ਭੇਦ ਨੂੰ ਨਾ ਜਾਣ ਸਕਿਆ ॥੭॥
People kept on watching but could not fathom.(7)
ਤਬਰਾਨੀਐਸੇਕਹਿਯੋਸੁਨਿਯੈਬਚਨਰਸਾਲ॥
ਤਦ ਰਾਣੀ ਨੇ (ਰਾਜੇ ਨੂੰ) ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ, (ਹੇ ਰਾਜਨ!) ਮੇਰੇ ਮਿਠੇ ਬੋਲ ਸੁਣੋ।
Then Rani said (to Raja), ‘Please listen to me,
ਬਹਤਜਾਤਤਰਬੂਜਜੋਮੋਹਿਮਿਲੈਦਰਹਾਲ॥੮॥
(ਇਹ) ਜੋ ਤਰਬੂਜ਼ ਰੁੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਜਲਦੀ ('ਦਰਹਾਲ') ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੮॥
‘The melon, which is floating, is needed by me.’(8)
ਬਚਨੁਸੁਨਤਰਾਜਾਤਬੈਪਠਏਮਨੁਖਅਨੇਕ॥
ਰਾਜੇ ਨੇ (ਰਾਣੀ ਦੀ) ਗੱਲ ਸੁਣਦਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਵੇਲੇ ਕਈ ਬੰਦੇ ਭੇਜ ਦਿੱਤੇ।
Conceding (to her request), Raja despatched a few men.
ਜਾਤਬਹੇਤਰਬੂਜਕੌਪਹੁਚਤਭਯੋਨਏਕ॥੯॥
(ਪਰ) ਰੁੜ੍ਹਦੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਤਰਬੂਜ਼ ਤਕ ਇਕ ਵੀ ਨਾ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਸਕਿਆ ॥੯॥
They all ran fast but could not catch the melon drifting across.(9)

ਤਬਰਾਨੀਯੌਬਚਨਉਚਾਰੇ॥
ਤਦ ਰਾਣੀ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਬੋਲ ਕਹੇ
ਸੁਨਹੁਨਾਥਬਡਭਾਗਹਮਾਰੇ॥
ਕਿ ਹੇ ਨਾਥ! ਸਾਡੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਭਾਗ ਹਨ।
Then Rani spoke, ‘Listen my master, we are very lucky,
ਬੂਡਿਕੋਊਜਾਕੇਹਿਤਮਰੈ॥
ਉਸ ਲਈ ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਡੁਬ ਕੇ ਮਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ,
ਮੋਰਮੂੰਡਅਪਜਸਬਹੁਧਰੈ॥੧੦॥
ਤਾਂ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਿਰ ਤੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਅਪਜਸ ਚੜ੍ਹਦਾ ॥੧੦॥
‘No one should lay his life for this, otherwise a curse will remain in my conscious.’(10)

ਰਾਨੀਹਿਤਹਿਦਵਾਨਕੇਮਨੁਖਬੁਰਾਯੋਏਕ॥
ਰਾਣੀ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਤਰਬੂਜ਼ (ਨੂੰ ਪਕੜਨ) ਲਈ ਇਕ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਡੁਬਵਾਇਆ ਹੈ।
Rani had assigned one person in connection with (saving) the melon, (Who interceded,)
ਯਹਅਪਜਸਨਕਬਹੁਮਿਟੈਭਾਖਹਿਲੋਗਅਨੇਕ॥੧੧॥
(ਸੋਚਣ ਲਗੀ ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਡੁਬ ਗਿਆ ਤਾਂ) ਇਹ ਅਪਜਸ ਕਦੇ ਵੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਟੇਗਾ, ਅਨੇਕ ਲੋਕ ਇਹੀ ਕਹਿਣਗੇ ॥੧੧॥
‘Every body was expressing if it happens as such (that man is killed), then, this blot will ever be remembered.’(11)

ਆਪਹਿਦੈਤਰਬੂਜਤਰਾਯੋ॥
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਤਰਬੂਜ਼ ਤਰਵਾਇਆ
She, herself, had floated the melon, herself, infuriated Raja,
ਆਪਹਿਆਇਨ੍ਰਿਪਹਿਰਿਸਵਾਯੋ॥
ਅਤੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਆ ਕੇ ਰਾਜੇ ਨੂੰ ਕ੍ਰੋਧਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ।
And, herself, she called various people.
ਆਪਹਿਹੋਰਿਮਨੁਛਨਲੀਨਾ॥
ਆਪ ਹੀ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਹੋੜ ਦਿੱਤਾ।
ਤ੍ਰਿਯਾਚਰਿਤ੍ਰਨਕਿਨਹੂੰਚੀਨਾ॥੧੨॥
ਇਸਤਰੀ ਦੇ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੇ ਵੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਿਆ ॥੧੨॥
No one can understand the Chritars of the woman.(12)(1)

ਏਕਤਖਾਨਉਜੈਨਮੈਬਿਬਿਚਾਰਨਿਤਿਹਨਾਰਿ॥
ਉਜੈਨ ਵਿਚ ਇਕ ਤਰਖਾਣ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਵਿਭਚਾਰਨ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਸੀ।
There lived a carpenter in Ujain, whose wife conducted a vile Chritar.
ਤਾਸੋਕਰਿਯੋਚਰਿਤ੍ਰਤਿਨਸੋਤੁਹਿਕਹੌਸੁਧਾਰਿ॥੧॥
ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਜੋ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਕੀਤਾ, ਉਹੀ ਮੈਂ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਸੁਧਾਰ ਕੇ ਕਹਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ॥੧॥
Now I am going to narrated you that with a few amends.(1)

ਸੁਮਤਿਬਾਢਿਯਹਿਤਬੈਉਚਾਰੋ॥
ਸੁਮਤਿ ਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਤਰਖਾਣ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਹਾ,
ਸੁਨੁਗੀਗੋਤੈਬਚਨਹਮਾਰੋ॥
ਹੇ ਗੀਗੋ! ਤੂੰ ਮੇਰੀ ਗੱਲ ਸੁਣ।
The carpenter, named Sumat asked one day, ‘Gigo (the wife), listen what I have to say.
ਹੌਅਬਹੀਪਰਦੇਸਸਿਧੈਹੌਂ॥
ਮੈਂ ਹੁਣੇ ਪਰਦੇਸ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹਾਂ।
ਖਾਟਿਕਮਾਇਤੁਮੈਧਨੁਲਯੈਹੌਂ॥੨॥
(ਉਥੋਂ) ਖਟ ਕਮਾ ਕੇ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਧਨ ਲਿਆ ਕੇ ਦਿਆਂਗਾ ॥੨॥
I am going abroad, and will come back after earning lot of money.’(2)
ਯੌਕਹਿਕੈਪਰਦੇਸਸਿਧਾਰੋ॥
ਇਹ ਕਹਿ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਪਰਦੇਸ ਚਲਾ ਗਿਆ।
ਖਾਟਤਰੇਛਪਿਰਹਿਯੋਬਿਚਾਰੋ॥
ਪਰ ਅਸਲ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ ਵਿਚਾਰਾ ਮੰਜੀ ਹੇਠਾਂ ਛਿਪ ਗਿਆ।
Saying so, presumably he went abroad, but, as a matter of fact, he hid himself under the bed.
ਤਬਬਾਢਿਨਇਕਜਾਰਬੁਲਾਯੋ॥
ਤਦ ਤਰਖਾਣੀ ਨੇ ਇਕ ਯਾਰ ਬੁਲਾਇਆ
ਕਾਮਕੇਲਤਿਹਸਾਥਕਮਾਯੋ॥੩॥
ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਕਾਮ-ਕ੍ਰੀੜਾ ਕੀਤੀ ॥੩॥
Then lady-carpenter called her paramour and revelled in making love with him.(3)
ਕਾਮਕੇਲਤਾਸੌਤ੍ਰਿਯਮਾਨ੍ਯੋ॥
(ਉਸ) ਇਸਤਰੀ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਕਾਮ-ਕੇਲ ਕੀਤੀ,
ਖਾਟਤਰੇਨਿਜੁਪਤਿਹਿਪਛਾਨ੍ਯੋ॥
ਪਰ ਮੰਜੀ ਹੇਠਾਂ (ਛਿਪੇ ਹੋਏ) ਪਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣ ਲਿਆ।
While having sex-play, she discovered her husband lying under the bed.
ਸਭਅੰਗਨਬਿਹਬਲਹ੍ਵੈਗਈ॥
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਅੰਗ ਵਿਆਕੁਲ ਹੋ ਗਏ
ਚਿਤਕੇਬਿਖੈਦੁਖਿਤਅਤਿਭਈ॥੪॥
ਅਤੇ ਚਿਤ ਵਿਚ ਬਹੁਤ ਦੁਖੀ ਹੋਈ ॥੪॥
Her whole body started to ache and felt much remorse at heart.(4)
ਤਬਤਾਸੌਤ੍ਰਿਯਬਚਨਉਚਾਰੇ॥
ਤਾਂ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੀ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਹਾ,
ਮੁਹਿਕਾਕਰਤਦਈਕੇਮਾਰੇ॥
ਹੇ ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਮਾਰੇ! ਤੂੰ ਮੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਕੀ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ।
Then the woman said to her lover, ‘Oh, my Lord what are you doing.
ਪ੍ਰਾਨਨਾਥਮੇਰੇਘਰਨਾਹੀ॥
ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣਨਾਥ ਘਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਨ
ਹੌਜਿਹਬਸਤਬਾਹਕੀਛਾਹੀ॥੫॥
ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਬਾਂਹ ਦੀ ਛਾਂ ਹੇਠਾਂ ਮੈਂ ਵਸਦੀ ਹਾਂ ॥੫॥
‘My Master is not at home; only under his protection I can outlive.(5)

ਨਿਤਿਅੰਸੂਆਆਖਿਨਭਰੌਂਰਹੋਂਮਲੀਨੇਭੇਸ॥
ਮੈਂ ਨਿੱਤ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਹੰਝੂਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਭਰਦੀ ਹਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਮੈਲੇ ਵੇਸ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹਾਂ।
‘With tears in my eyes, I always remain in menial dress.
ਪੌਰਲਗੇਬਿਹਰੌਨਹੀਂਪ੍ਰਾਨਨਾਥਪਰਦੇਸ॥੬॥
ਪ੍ਰਾਣਨਾਥ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਦੇਸ ਗਏ ਹੋਣ ਕਾਰਨ ਮੈਂ ਬੂਹੇ ਤਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹਾਂ ॥੬॥
My master being gone abroad, I never take a step out side the house.(6)
ਲਗਤਬੀਰਿਯਾਬਾਨਸੀਬਿਖੁਸੋਲਗਤਅਨਾਜ॥
ਮੈਨੂੰ ਪਾਨ ਬੀੜੀ ਬਾਣ ਵਾਂਗ ਲਗਦੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਅਨਾਜ ਵਿਸ਼ ਵਰਗਾ ਲਗਦਾ ਹੈ।
‘Beetle-leaves and bird (cigarettes) hit me like the arrows, and the food
ਪ੍ਰਾਨਨਾਥਪਰਦੇਸਗੇਤਾਬਿਨਕਛੂਨਸਾਜ॥੭॥
ਪ੍ਰਾਣਨਾਥ ਪਰਦੇਸ ਗਏ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ, ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ) ਕੋਈ ਸੁਆਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ॥੭॥
When husband is abroad, nothing savours me.(7)
ਬਾਢੀਐਸੇਬਚਨਸੁਨਿਮਨਮੈਭਯੋਖੁਸਾਲ॥
(ਉਹ) ਤਰਖਾਣ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਬਚਨ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ।
Listening to such praise, he (the husband) was much pleased,
ਜਾਰਸਹਿਤਤ੍ਰਿਯਖਾਟਲੈਨਾਚਿਉਠਿਯੋਤਤਕਾਲ॥੮॥
ਯਾਰ ਸਮੇਤ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਦੀ ਮੰਜੀ ਨੂੰ ਚੁਕ ਕੇ ਤੁਰਤ ਨਚਣ ਲਗ ਗਿਆ ॥੮॥
And carrying the bed on his head he started to dance.(8)(1)
