ਸਭਹੀਧਨੁਇਕਠੋਕੈਲਯੋ॥
ਅਤੇ ਸਾਰਾ ਧਨ ਇਕੱਠਾ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ।
When the Shah had gone to sleep, he accumulated all the wealth,
ਸਾਥਿਨਤਿਨਿਦ੍ਵਾਰਬੈਠਾਯੋ॥
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਦੁਆਰ ਉਤੇ ਇਕ ਸਾਥੀ ਨੂੰ ਬਿਠਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ
ਸੋਯੋਖਾਨਨਜਾਤਜਗਾਯੋ॥੮॥
(ਅਤੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ) ਖ਼ਾਨ ਸੁਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, (ਇਸ ਨੂੰ) ਜਗਾਣਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ॥੮॥
He told his accomplice to watch at the gate and not to awake him.(8)

ਪਿਛਲੇ ਦਰਵਾਜ਼ੇ ਨੂੰ ਖੋਲ ਕੇ ਤੁਰਤ ਭਜ ਗਿਆ
Leaving his companion at the doorstep, he quickly ran away.
ਸਭਰੁਪਯਨਹਰਲੈਗਏਬਨਿਯਾਭਏਬਿਹਾਲ॥੯॥
ਅਤੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਰੁਪਏ ਲੁਟ ਕੇ ਲੈ ਗਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਬਨੀਆ ਬੇਹਾਲ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ॥੯॥
He swindled all the rupees and the Shah was very much distressed.(9)(1)

ਮੁਗਲਏਕਗਜਨੀਰਹੈਬਖਤਿਯਾਰਤਿਹਨਾਮ॥
ਗ਼ਜਨੀ ਵਿਚ ਇਕ ਮੁਗ਼ਲ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਸੀ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਬਖ਼ਤਿਆਰ ਸੀ।
A Mughal used to live in Ghazni and his name was Mukhtiyar.
ਬਡੇਸਦਨਤਾਕੇਬਨੇਬਹੁਤਗਾਠਿਮੈਦਾਮ॥੧॥
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਮਹੱਲ ਬਣੇ ਹੋਏ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਕੋਲ ਬਹੁਤ ਧਨ ਸੀ ॥੧॥
He had palatial houses and possessed lot of wealth.(1)
ਤਾਕੇਘਰਇਕਹਯਹੁਤੋਤਾਕੋਚੋਰਨਿਹਾਰਿ॥
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਇਕ ਘੋੜਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਸੀ। ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਚੋਰ ਨੇ ਵੇਖਿਆ (ਅਤੇ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਕਿ)
He had a horse, which a thief came to observe.
ਯਾਕੋਕ੍ਯੋਹੂੰਚੋਰਿਯੈਕਛੂਚਰਿਤ੍ਰਸੁਧਾਰਿ॥੨॥
ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਚੁਰਾ ਲੈਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
He (the thief) contemplated how to steal that?(2)
ਆਨਿਚਾਕਰੀਕੀਕਰੀਤਾਕੇਧਾਮਤਲਾਸ॥
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਆ ਕੇ ਉਸ (ਮੁਗ਼ਲ) ਦੇ ਘਰ ਨੌਕਰੀ ਦੀ ਤਲਾਸ਼ ਕੀਤੀ।
He came and asked for a job in the Mughal’s house.
ਮੁਗਲਮਹੀਨਾਕੈਤੁਰਤਚਾਕਰਕੀਨੋਤਾਸ॥੩॥
ਮੁਗ਼ਲ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਤੁਰਤ ਮਹੀਨੇ ਦੀ (ਬੰਨ੍ਹੀ ਨੌਕਰੀ) ਤੇ ਨੌਕਰ ਰਖ ਲਿਆ ॥੩॥
The Mughal immediately engaged him on monthly terms.(3)

ਮਹਿਯਾਨਾਅਪਨੋਕਰਵਾਯੋ॥
ਆਪਣਾ ਮਹੀਨਾ ਲੈਣਾ ਨਿਸਚਿਤ ਕਰਵਾ ਲਿਆ
ਕਰਜਾਈਕੋਨਾਮੁਸੁਨਾਯੋ॥
ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਨਾਂ 'ਕਰਜ਼ਾਈ' ਦਸਿਆ।
He got a monthly salary’s deed written, and, thus, made the Mughal as his debtor.
ਤਾਕੀਸੇਵਾਕੋਬਹੁਕਰਿਯੋ॥
ਫਿਰ ਉਸ (ਮੁਗ਼ਲ) ਦੀ ਬਹੁਤ ਸੇਵਾ ਕੀਤੀ
ਬਖਤਿਯਾਰਕੋਧਨੁਹੈਹਰਿਯੋ॥੪॥
ਅਤੇ ਬਖ਼ਤਿਆਰ ਦਾ ਧਨ ਚੋਰੀ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ ॥੪॥
He rendered his services and, then, stole the pay-role of the cashier.(4)

ਦਿਨਕੋਧਨੁਹੈਹਰਿਚਲ੍ਯੋਕਰਜਾਈਕਹਲਾਇ॥
ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ 'ਕਰਜ਼ਾਈ' ਅਖਵਾ ਕੇ ਦਿਨ ਨੂੰ ਧਨ ਅਤੇ ਘੋੜਾ ਲੁਟ ਕੇ ਲੈ ਗਿਆ।
(Now, as the Mughal was left with no money and could not pay his wages) He declared that he (Mughal) was his debtor.
ਸਕਲਲੋਕਠਟਕੇਰਹੈਰੈਨਾਈਲਖਿਪਾਇ॥੫॥
ਸਭ ਲੋਗ (ਉਸ ਨੂੰ) ਕਰਜ਼ਾਈ ('ਰੈਨਾਈ') ਸਮਝ ਕੇ ਹੈਰਾਨ ਰਹਿ ਗਏ ॥੫॥
He put the people into astonishment, took the horse and went away.(5)

ਪਾਛੇਮੁਗਲਪੀਟਤੋਆਯੋ॥
ਪਿਛੋਂ ਮੁਗ਼ਲ ਰੋਂਦਾ ਪਿਟਦਾ ਆਇਆ
ਕਰਜਾਈਧਨੁਤੁਰਾਚੁਰਾਯੋ॥
ਕਿ ਕਰਜ਼ਾਈ ਨੇ ਧਨ ਅਤੇ ਘੋੜਾ ਚੁਰਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ।
The Mughal was distressed and disclosed that the debtor had taken away all his wealth.
ਜੋਇਹਬੈਨਨਕੋਸੁਨਿਪਾਵੈ॥
ਜੋ ਉਸ ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਸੁਣ ਲੈਂਦਾ,
ਤਾਹੀਕੋਝੂਠੋਠਹਰਾਵੈ॥੬॥
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਝੂਠਾ ਠਹਿਰਾਉਂਦਾ ॥੬॥
Who-so-ever listened, made fun of him considering him a liar (and told him).(6)
ਜਾਤੇਦਰਬੁਕਰਜੁਲੈਖਾਯੋ॥
ਜਿਸ ਤੋਂ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਧਨ ਕਰਜ਼ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਖਾਇਆ ਹੈ,
ਕਹਾਭਯੋਤਿਨਤੁਰਾਚੁਰਾਯੋ॥
ਕੀ ਹੋਇਆ ਜੋ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਘੋੜਾ ਚੁਰਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ?
‘If you had borrowed money from some one, how could he steal from you?
ਕ੍ਯੋਨਤੈਦਰਬੁਉਧਾਰੋਲਯੋ॥
(ਤੁਸੀਂ) ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਧਨ ਉਧਾਰਾ ਕਿਉਂ ਲਿਆ ਸੀ?
ਕਹਾਭਯੋਜੋਹੈਲੈਗਯੋ॥੭॥
(ਫਿਰ) ਕੀ ਹੋਇਆ ਜੋ (ਉਹ ਤੁਹਾਡਾ) ਘੋੜਾ ਲੈ ਗਿਆ? ॥੭॥
‘Why had you taken loan from him? What, then, if he has taken your horses in lieu (of his money).’
ਦੋਹਰਾ॥

ਵਾਹੀਕੋਝੂਠਾਕਿਯੋਭੇਦਨਪਾਵੈਕੋਇ॥
(ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਨੇ) ਉਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਝੂਠਾ ਕੀਤਾ, ਕਿਸੇ ਨੇ ਵੀ (ਵਿਚਲੇ) ਭੇਦ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਿਆ।
Every body called him a liar without understanding the secret.
ਵਹਦਿਨਧਨਹੈਹਰਗਯੋਰਾਮਕਰੈਸੋਹਇ॥੮॥
ਉਸ ਦਿਨ (ਉਸ ਦਾ) ਧਨ ਅਤੇ ਘੋੜਾ ਚੋਰੀ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ। ਜਿਵੇਂ ਰਾਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਿਵੇਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੮॥
Each day is auspicious and it happens the way Lord God wills.(8)(1)

ਪੁਨਿਮੰਤ੍ਰੀਐਸੇਕਹਿਯੋਸੁਨਿਯੈਕਥਾਨ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ॥
ਫਿਰ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੀ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ, ਹੇ ਰਾਜਨ! (ਤੁਸੀਂ) ਕਥਾ ਸੁਣੋ।
Then the Minister said, ‘Listen to another story, my Raja.’
ਤੇਹੀਚੋਰਚਰਿਤ੍ਰਇਕਕਿਯੋਸੁਕਹੋਉਤਾਲ॥੧॥
ਉਸ ਚੋਰ ਨੇ ਇਕ (ਹੋਰ) ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਕੀਤਾ, ਉਹ ਮੈਂ ਸ਼ੀਘਰ ਕਹਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ॥੧॥
‘The same thief played another trick which I tell you now.(1)

ਜਬਤਸਕਰਧਨੁਤੁਰਾਚੁਰਾਯੋ॥
ਜਦ (ਉਸ) ਚੋਰ ਨੇ ਧਨ ਅਤੇ ਘੋੜਾ ਚੁਰਾ ਲਿਆ,
ਪੁਨਿਤਾਕੇਚਿਤਮੈਯੌਆਯੋ॥
ਤਾਂ ਫਿਰ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਇਹ ਆਇਆ
When he had stolen the wealth, another thought came into his mind,
ਅਤਿਭੁਤਏਕਚਰਿਤ੍ਰਬਨੈਯੇ॥
ਕਿ ਇਕ ਅਦਭੁਤ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਜਾਏ
ਤ੍ਰਿਯਸੁੰਦਰਿਜਾਤੇਗ੍ਰਿਹਪੈਯੈ॥੨॥
ਜਿਸ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਏ ॥੨॥
‘Why not play one more trick through which a pretty woman could be possessed.’(2)

ਧਾਮਜਵਾਈਆਪਨੋਰਾਖ੍ਯੋਨਾਮੁਬਨਾਇ॥
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਨਾਂ 'ਧਾਮ ਜਵਾਈ' (ਘਰ ਜਵਾਈ) ਰਖਿਆ
He assigned himself a name, ghar-jawai, the live-in son-in-law,
ਬਿਧਵਾਤ੍ਰਿਯਕੇਧਾਮਮੈਡੇਰਾਕੀਨੋਜਾਇ॥੩॥
ਅਤੇ ਇਕ ਵਿਧਵਾ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਡੇਰਾ ਲਗਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ॥੩॥
And came and started to dwell with a widow.(3)

ਵਾਕੇਹ੍ਰਿਦੈਅਨੰਦਿਤਭਯੋ॥
ਉਸ (ਵਿਧਵਾ) ਦਾ ਮਨ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ
She was very happy that God has bestowed her with a son,
