ਜਬਤ੍ਰਿਯਪਤਿਆਵਤਲਖਿਪਾਇਸ॥
ਜਦ (ਉਸ) ਇਸਤਰੀ ਨੇ ਪਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਆਉਂਦਿਆਂ ਵੇਖਿਆ
ਯਹੈਚਿਤਮੈਚਰਿਤਬਨਾਇਸ॥
ਤਾਂ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਇਹ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਬਣਾਇਆ।
When the woman saw her husband coming towards her, she thought of a deception.
ਸੌਛਿਤਰਤਿਹਮੂੰਢਲਗਾਯੋ॥
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਉਤੇ ਸੌ ਜੁਤੀਆਂ ਮਾਰੀਆਂ
ਛੋਰਿਪਠਾਨਕਹਿਯੋਕ੍ਯੋਆਯੋ॥੪॥
ਅਤੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਪਠਾਣ ਨੂੰ ਛਡ ਕੇ (ਇਥੇ) ਕਿਉਂ ਆਏ ਹੋ ॥੪॥
She hit him with a slipper for hundred times and asked why had he come leaving the Pathan.(4)
ਦੋਹਰਾ॥

ਆਪੁਜੂਤਿਯਨਜੁਰਿਗਈਰਹੀਨਤਾਹਿਸੰਭਾਰਿ॥
(ਉਹ ਇਸਤਰੀ) ਆਪ ਜੁਤੀਆਂ ਮਾਰਨ ਵਿਚ ਰੁਝ ਗਈ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ (ਕੇਵਲ) ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਸ਼ ਨਾ ਰਹੀ।
She got involved in hitting with the slipper and he lost his senses too.
ਐਸੋਚਰਿਤਬਨਾਇਕੈਬਾਕੋਦਯੋਨਿਕਾਰਿ॥੫॥
ਅਜਿਹਾ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਉਸ ਨੇ) ਬਾਂਕੇ ਨੂੰ (ਘਰੋਂ) ਭਜਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ॥੫॥
With such duplicity, she enabled the lover to escape.(5)
ਅਤਿਚਿਤਕੋਪਬਢਾਇਕੈਤਪਤਤਾਬ੍ਰਕਰਨੈਨ॥
ਆਪਣੇ ਚਿਤ ਵਿਚ ਬਹੁਤ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਵਧਾ ਕੇ, ਤਪੇ ਹੋਏ ਤਾਂਬੇ ਵਰਗੀਆਂ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਬਣਾ ਕੇ
By making the face look furious,
ਬਿਕਟਬਿਕ੍ਰਕਰਿਆਪਨੋਕਹੈਬਨਕਿਸੋਬੈਨ॥੬॥
ਅਤੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਵਟ ਕੇ ਬਨੀਏ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਹਾ ॥੬॥
And with eyes wildly open, she said to the Shah (6)

ਜਾਕੋਲੋਨਖੈਯੈਤਾਕੋਛੋਰਿਕਬਹੂੰਨਜੈਯੈਜਾਕੋਲੋਨਖੈਯੈਤਾਕੋਆਗੇਹ੍ਵੈਕੈਜੂਝਿਯੈ॥
ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਲੂਣ ਖਾਈਏ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਦੇ ਵੀ ਛਡ ਕੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ। ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਲੂਣ ਖਾਈਏ, ਉਸ ਲਈ ਅਗੇ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਲੜਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ।
‘Who-so-ever’s salt you eat, never abandon him, ‘Who-so-ever’s salt you eat, you should, even, sacrifice your life. ‘Who-so-ever’s salt you eat, never cheat him.
ਜਾਕੋਲੋਨਖੈਯੈਤਾਕੋਦਗਾਕਬਹੂੰਨਦੈਯੈਸਾਚੀਸੁਨਿਲੈਯੈਤਾਸੌਸਾਚਹੂੰਕੋਲੂਝਿਯੈ॥
ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਲੂਣ ਖਾਈਏ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਦੇ ਵੀ ਧੋਖਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੇਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ। (ਮੇਰੀ) ਸੱਚੀ ਗੱਲ ਸੁਣ ਲਵੋ, ਉਸ ਲਈ ਸਚੀ ਮੁਚੀਂ ਲੜ ਮਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ।
‘Listen to this truth I am stressing, you better, even, die for him. ‘Never commit theft, and if the master gives, it should be equally distributed. .
ਚੋਰੀਨਕਮੈਯੈਆਪੁਦੇਵੈਸੋਭੀਬਾਟਿਖੈਯੈਝੂਠਨਬਨੈਯੈਕਛੂਲੈਬੇਕੌਨਰੂਝਿਯੈ॥
ਕਦੇ ਚੋਰੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਨੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ, (ਮਾਲਕ) ਜੋ ਆਪ ਦੇਵੇ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਵੰਡ ਕੇ ਖਾਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ। (ਕਦੇ) ਝੂਠੀ ਗੱਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣਾਉਣੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਅਤੇ ਕੁਝ ਲੈਣ ਲਈ ਰੁਚਿਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ।
‘Never tell lies, and to achieve something, one should not become greedy.
ਰੋਸਨਬਢੈਯੈਬੁਰੀਭਾਖੈਸੋਭੀਮਾਨਿਲੈਯੈਚਾਕਰੀਕਮੈਯੈਨਾਥਮੋਰੀਬਾਤਬੂਝਿਯੈ॥੭॥
(ਕਦੇ) ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਨਹੀਂ ਵਧਾਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ, (ਜੇ ਮਾਲਕ) ਮਾੜਾ ਚੰਗਾ ਕਹੇ (ਤਾਂ) ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਮੰਨ ਲੈਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਪਤੀ ਦੇਵ! ਮੇਰੀ ਗੱਲ ਸਮਝ ਕੇ (ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਨਾਲ) ਨੌਕਰੀ ਕਰਨੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੭॥
Never get angry, even if master rebukes, one should accept. ‘Listen, my beloved, you must perform Your service humbtly.’(7)
ਦੋਹਰਾ॥

ਬਨਿਯੈਜੂਤੀਖਾਇਕੈਸੀਖਲਈਮਨਮਾਹਿ॥
ਬਨੀਏ ਨੇ ਜੁਤੀਆਂ ਖਾ ਕੇ ਸਿਖਿਆ ਨੂੰ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਧਾਰਨ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ।
The Shah learnt the lesson after getting beating with slippers,
ਕਹਸ੍ਯਾਨੀਤ੍ਰਿਯਗ੍ਰਿਹਗਯੋਭੇਦਪਛਾਨ੍ਯੋਨਾਹਿ॥੮॥
(ਇਹ) ਕਹਿ ਕੇ ਕਿ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਸਿਆਣੀ ਹੈ, ਘਰੋਂ ਚਲਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਭੇਦ ਨੂੰ ਨਾ ਸਮਝਿਆ ॥੮॥
And without discerning the trickery, he went away from the house.(8)(1)

ਚੋਰਏਕਚਤੁਰੋਰਹੈਬੈਰਮਤਾਕੋਨਾਵ॥
ਬੈਰਮ ਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਇਕ ਚਾਲਾਕ ਚੋਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਸੀ।
There was a thief whose name was Bairam.
ਜਾਤਸੇਖਜਾਦੋਰਹੈਬਸੈਕਾਲਪੀਗਾਵ॥੧॥
ਜਾਤਿ ਦਾ ਉਹ ਸ਼ੇਖਜ਼ਾਦਾ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਕਾਲਪੀ ਪਿੰਡ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਸੀ ॥੧॥
By caste he was a sheikh and used to live in the village of Kaalpi.( 1)
ਚੌਪਈ॥
ਚੌਪਈ:

ਚੌਚੋਬਾਗ੍ਰਿਹਬਸਤ੍ਰਬਨਾਯੋ॥
(ਉਸ ਨੇ) ਚਾਰ ਚੋਬਾਂ ਵਾਲਾ ਤੰਬੂ ('ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਬਸਤ੍ਰ') ਬਣਵਾਇਆ
ਆਪਨਕੋਉਮਰਾਵਕਹਾਯੋ॥
ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਮੰਤ ਅਖਵਾਇਆ।
He adorned four tier clothes and posed himself as an aristocrat (and he announced),
ਮੈਹਜਰਤਿਤੇਮਨਸਬਲਯੋ॥
ਮੈਂ ਬਾਦਸ਼ਾਹ ('ਹਜਰਤਿ') ਤੋਂ ਮਰਾਤਬਾ ਹਾਸਲ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ
ਪਲਵਲਦੇਸਪਰਗਨਾਭਯੋ॥੨॥
ਅਤੇ ਪਲਵਲ ਦੇਸ (ਮੇਰਾ) ਪਰਗਨਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
‘The Raja has granted me an honour and (the territory of) Palwal is my protectorate.(2)
ਦੋਹਰਾ॥

ਤਾਕੇਕਛੁਉਪਚਾਰੁਕੋਕੀਜੈਹ੍ਰਿਦੈਬਿਚਾਰ॥
(ਉਸ ਨੇ) ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸੁਧਾਰ ਲਈ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਕੁਝ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕੀਤਾ
‘That is why I am going to undertake some welfare work,
ਤਹਾਚਲਨਕੋਸਾਜੁਸਭਲੀਜੈਮੋਲਸੁਧਾਰਿ॥੩॥
ਕਿ ਉਥੋਂ ਦੇ ਚਲਨ ਨੂੰ ਧਨ ਖ਼ਰਚ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਸੁਧਾਰ ਲਿਆ ਜਾਏ ॥੩॥
‘And to perform the task, I will have to act in good manners.’
ਚੌਪਈ॥
ਚੌਪਈ:

ਸਕਲਗਾਵਕੇਬਨਿਕਬੁਲਾਏ॥
(ਉਸ ਨੇ) ਪਿੰਡ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਬਨੀਏ ਬੁਲਾ ਲਏ
ਸੌਕੁਰੁਪੈਯਾਤਿਨਚਟਵਾਏ॥
ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਆਓ ਭਗਤ ਲਈ ਸੌ ਕੁ ਰੁਪਇਆ ਖ਼ਰਚ ਕੀਤਾ।
He called all the people of the village and to entertain them he spent about one hundred rupees.
ਕਹਿਯੋਤ੍ਯਾਰਸਾਜੁਕਰਿਦੀਜੈ॥
(ਉਸ ਨੇ) ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਸਾਰੇ ਸਾਜ-ਸਾਮਾਨ ਤਿਆਰ ਕਰ ਲਵੋ
ਅਬਹੀਰੋਕਰੁਪੈਯਾਲੀਜੈ॥੪॥
ਅਤੇ ਹੁਣ ਹੀ ਨਕਦ ਰੁਪਇਆ ਲੈ ਲਵੋ ॥੪॥
He asked them to get ready and arrange some money.
ਦੋਹਰਾ॥
ਦੋਹਰਾ:

ਰੋਕਰੁਪੈਯਨਖਰਚਿਕੈਲੀਜੈਮੁਹਰਬਟਾਇ॥
ਨਕਦ ਰੁਪਏ ਖ਼ਰਚ ਕੇ ਮੋਹਰਾਂ ਵਟਾ ਲੈਣੀਆਂ ਚਾਹੀਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ
He had intended to collect the rupees and then convert them into goldcoins,
ਭਰਬਰਦਾਰੀਕੋਘਨੋਖਰਚਨਹੋਇਬਨਾਇ॥੫॥
(ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਬਰਾਦਰੀ ਦਾ ਭਾਰ ਬਹੁਤ ਹੈ, (ਇਸ ਲਈ) ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ ਖ਼ਰਚ ਕਰਨਾ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
So that the high expenses could be met.(5)
ਚੌਪਈ॥
ਚੌਪਈ:

ਜੋਤਿਨਕਹੀਸੁਬਨਿਕਨਮਾਨੀ॥
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਿਹਾ, ਉਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਬਨੀਏ ਨੇ ਕੀਤਾ
ਕਛੂਸੰਕਚਿਤਬੀਚਨਆਨੀ॥
ਅਤੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਕਿਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਸੰਦੇਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਿਆਂਦਾ।
The Shah acted the way he was asked, he did not get any doubt in his mind,
ਮੁਹਰੈਅਧਿਕਆਨਿਕਰਦਈ॥
(ਉਸ ਨੇ) ਬਹੁਤ ਅਧਿਕ ਮੋਹਰਾਂ ਲਿਆ ਕੇ ਦਿੱਤੀਆਂ।
ਤਸਕਰਡਾਰਿਗੁਥਰਿਯਹਿਲਈ॥੬॥
ਚੋਰ ਨੇ (ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਗੁੱਥੀਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਪਾ ਲਿਆ ॥੬॥
Brought lot of gold-coins and handed over to that swindler.(6)
ਦੋਹਰਾ॥

ਔਰਖਜਾਨੋਸਾਹੁਕੋਸਭਹੀਲਯੋਮੰਗਾਇ॥
ਅਤੇ ਸ਼ਾਹੂਕਾਰ ਦੇ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਮੰਗਵਾ ਲਿਆ
Whole of the treasurer of the Shah was brought in,
ਜਾਇਜਹਾਨਾਬਾਦਮੈਦੈਹੌਧਨਪਹੁਚਾਇ॥੭॥
(ਅਤੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ) ਜਹਾਨਾਬਾਦ ਵਿਚ ਸਾਰਾ ਧਨ ਪਹੁੰਚਾ ਦਿਆਂਗਾ ॥੭॥
(And he told him) that he will hand over all that in Jehanbad (Capital of the Emperor).

ਬਨਿਯਨਕੇਬੈਠੇਸੋਗਯੋ॥
(ਉਹ) ਬਨੀਏ ਦੇ ਬੈਠਿਆਂ ਹੋਇਆਂ ਹੀ ਸੌਂ ਗਿਆ
