ਤੁਰਹੁਤਹਾਤੇਕਾਢਮੰਗੈਯੈ॥
ਉਥੋਂ ਤੁਰਤ ਕਢ ਕੇ ਮੰਗਵਾ ਲਵੋ
ਆਨਿਤ੍ਰਿਯਾਕੇਬਕ੍ਰਲਗੈਯੈ॥੧੧॥
ਅਤੇ ਲਿਆ ਕੇ (ਆਪਣੀ) ਇਸਤਰੀ ਦੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਉਤੇ ਲਗਾ ਦਿਓ ॥੧੧॥
“Go, take out immediately and put it on the face of the woman.”(11)

ਤਬਰਾਜੈਸੋਈਕਿਯੋਸਿਵਕੋਬਚਨਪਛਾਨਿ॥
ਤਦ ਰਾਜੇ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸ਼ਿਵ ਦੀ ਆਗਿਆ ਸਮਝ ਕੇ ਉਹੀ ਕੀਤਾ
Then the Raja, acquiescing to the exposition of Shiva, acted the same way.
ਤਾਕੇਮੁਖਸੋਕਾਢਹੈਨਾਕਲਗਾਯੋਆਨਿ॥੧੨॥
ਅਤੇ ਨਕ ਨੂੰ ਉਸ (ਚੋਰ) ਦੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਤੋਂ ਕਢ ਕੇ ਉਸ (ਰਾਣੀ) ਦੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਉਤੇ ਲਗਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ॥੧੨॥
He took nose out of his mouth and fixed it back on her face.(12)(1)

ਏਕਲਹੌਰਸੁਨਾਰੋਰਹੈ॥
ਲਾਹੌਰ ਵਿਚ ਇਕ ਸੁਨਿਆਰਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਸੀ।
In the city of Lahore, there lived a goldsmith,
ਅਤਿਤਸਕਰਤਾਕੋਜਗਕਹੈ॥
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਰੇ ਵੱਡਾ ਚੋਰ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਸਨ।
Whom people used to know as a big swindler.
ਸਾਹੁਤ੍ਰਿਯਾਤਾਕੋਸੁਨਿਪਾਯੋ॥
ਇਹ (ਗੱਲ) ਸ਼ਾਹ ਦੀ ਵਹੁਟੀ ਨੇ ਸੁਣ ਲਈ।
When the Shah’s wife heard about him,
ਘਾਟਗੜਨਹਿਤਤਾਹਿਬੁਲਾਯੋ॥੧॥
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ (ਗਹਿਣਿਆਂ ਦੀ) ਘਾੜਤ ਘੜਨ ਲਈ ਬੁਲਾ ਲਿਆ ॥੧॥
She called him to get the ornaments made.(1)

ਚਿਤ੍ਰਪ੍ਰਭਾਤ੍ਰਿਯਸਾਹੁਕੀਜੈਮਲਨਾਮਸੁਨਾਰ॥
ਸ਼ਾਹ ਦੀ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਦਾ ਨਾਂ ਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਪ੍ਰਭਾ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਸੁਨਿਆਰੇ ਦਾ ਨਾਂ ਜੈਮਲ ਸੀ।
The name of the Shah’s wife was Chattar Prabha and the name of the goldsmith was Jaimal.
ਘਾਟਘੜਤਭਯੋਸ੍ਵਰਨਕੋਤਵਨਤ੍ਰਿਯਾਕੇਦ੍ਵਾਰ॥੨॥
ਸੋਨੇ ਦੇ ਗਹਿਣੇ ਘੜਨ ਲਈ (ਉਹ) ਉਸ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਦੇ ਦੁਆਰ ਉਤੇ ਆਇਆ ॥੨॥
To make the ornaments he came to her house.(2)

ਜੌਨਸੁਨਾਰੋਘਾਤਲਗਾਵੈ॥
ਜਦੋਂ ਵੀ ਸੁਨਿਆਰਾ (ਚੋਰੀ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ) ਦਾਓ ਲਗਾਂਦਾ,
ਤਵਨੈਘਾਤਤ੍ਰਿਯਾਲਖਿਜਾਵੈ॥
ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਦਾਓ ਨੂੰ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਜਾਣ ਜਾਂਦੀ।
As soon as the goldsmith tried to steal, the woman came to know of it.
ਏਕਉਪਾਇਚਲਨਨਹਿਦੇਈ॥
ਉਸ ਦਾ ਇਕ ਦਾਓ ਵੀ ਚਲਣ ਨਾ ਦਿੰਦੀ,
ਗ੍ਰਿਹਕੋਧਨਮਮਹਰਨਹਿਲੇਈ॥੩॥
ਤਾਂ ਜੋ ਉਹ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਦਾ ਧਨ ਹਰ ਨਾ ਲਵੇ ॥੩॥
She would not let him play trick and he could not rob her wealth.(3)

ਕੋਰਿਜਤਨਸਠਕਰਰਹਿਯੋਕਛੂਨਚਲਿਯੋਉਪਾਇ॥
(ਉਹ) ਨੀਚ ਪੁਰਸ਼ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੇ ਯਤਨ ਕਰ ਥਕਿਆ, ਪਰ ਕੋਈ ਵੀ ਉਪਾ ਨਾ ਚਲਿਆ।
When he had tried thousands of times but had not succeeded,
ਆਪਨਸੁਤਕੋਨਾਮਲੈਰੋਦਨੁਕਿਯੋਬਨਾਇ॥੪॥
(ਤਦ) ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਦਾ ਨਾਂ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਰੋਣ ਲਗ ਪਿਆ ॥੪॥
Then, remembering his son’s name, he pretended to cry. ( 4)

ਬੰਦਨਨਾਮਪੁਤ੍ਰਹੌਂਮਰਿਯੋ॥
(ਮੇਰਾ) ਬੰਦਨ ਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਮਰ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਮੇਰੇਸਕਲੋਸੁਖਬਿਧਿਹਰਿਯੋ॥
ਵਿਧਾਤਾ ਨੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਸੁਖ ਹਰ ਲਏ ਹਨ।
‘My son named Bandon has died and God has revoked all his bliss.’
ਜੋਕਹਿਮੂੰਡਧਰਨਿਪਰਮਾਰਿਯੋ॥
ਇਹ ਕਹਿ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਸਿਰ ਧਰਤੀ ਉਤੇ ਪਟਕਿਆ
ਭਾਤਿਭਾਤਿਹਿਯਦੁਖਤਪੁਕਾਰਿਯੋ॥੫॥
ਅਤੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਦੇ ਦੁਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਭਾਂਤ ਭਾਂਤ ਨਾਲ ਵਿਰਲਾਪ ਕੀਤਾ ॥੫॥
Saying so, he hit his head on the ground and, being in agony, wailed aloud.(5)
ਏਕਪੁਤ੍ਰਤਾਹੂਕੋਮਾਰਿਯੋ॥
(ਰੱਬ ਨੇ) ਉਸ ਦਾ ਇਕਲੌਤਾ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਵੀ ਮਾਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ।
ਸੋਚਿਤਾਰਿਤਿਨਰੋਦਨਕਰਿਯੋ॥
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਉਹ (ਇਸਤਰੀ) ਵੀ ਰੋਣ ਲਗ ਗਈ।
‘He had only one son and that died too,’ thinking this, Chattar started to cry as well.
ਤਬਹੀਘਾਤਸੁਨਾਰੇਪਾਯੋ॥
ਤਦ ਹੀ ਸੁਨਿਆਰੇ ਨੂੰ ਮੌਕਾ ਮਿਲ ਗਿਆ।
ਨਾਲਬੀਚਕਰਸ੍ਵਰਨਚੁਰਾਯੋ॥੬॥
(ਫੂਕ ਮਾਰਨ ਵਾਲੀ) ਨਲੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਸੋਨਾ ਚੁਰਾ ਲਿਆ ॥੬॥
Instantly, he took advantage and, in the blow pipe, he stole the gold.(6)
ਤਪਤਸਲਾਕਡਾਰਿਛਿਤਦਈ॥
ਉਸ ਨੇ (ਸੋਨੇ ਦੀ) ਗਰਮ ਸਲਾਖ਼ ਨੂੰ ਧਰਤੀ ਉਤੇ ਸੁਟ ਦਿੱਤਾ
ਸੋਨਹਿਮਾਟੀਸੋਮਿਲਿਗਈ॥
ਅਤੇ (ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਸੋਨਾ ਮਿਟੀ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲ ਗਿਆ।
He threw hot pipe on the ground and amalgamated gold with the dust,
ਕਹਿਯੋਨਸੁਤਗ੍ਰਿਹਭਯੋਹਮਾਰੈ॥
ਕਹਿਣ ਲਗਾ ਕਿ ਮੇਰੇ ਘਰ (ਕੋਈ) ਪੁੱਤਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ
ਪਾਛੇਮੂੰਠੀਛਾਰਕੀਡਾਰੈ॥੭॥
ਜੋ ਮੇਰੇ ਪਿਛੋਂ ਸੁਆਹ ਦੀ ਮੁਠ ਵੀ ਪਾਏ ॥੭॥
And said, ‘There was no body left in my house, who could look after my ashes.’(7)
ਜਬਸੁਨਾਰਤ੍ਰਿਯਸੋਸੁਨਿਪਾਈ॥
ਜਦ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਨੇ ਸੁਨਿਆਰੇ ਦੀ (ਗੱਲ) ਸੁਣੀ
ਬਹੁਮੂੰਠੀਭਰਿਰਾਖਿਉਡਾਈ॥
ਤਾਂ ਸੁਆਹ ਦੀਆਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਮੁਠੀਆਂ ਭਰ ਕੇ ਉਡਾਈਆਂ।
When the woman ascertained goldsmith’s secret, she picked up a handful of dust and blew on his head saying,
ਸੁਨਸੁਨਾਰਤੇਰੇਸਿਰਮਾਹੀ॥
ਹੇ ਸੁਨਿਆਰੇ! ਸੁਣੋ, ਇਹ ਸੁਆਹ ਤੇਰੇ ਸਿਰ ਵਿਚ ਹੈ
ਜਾਕੇਏਕਪੁਤ੍ਰਗ੍ਰਿਹਨਾਹੀ॥੮॥
ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਇਕ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਵੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ॥੮॥
‘Listen, Goldsmith, this dust is over your head, because you have no son in your house.(8)

ਪੂਤਨਸੋਪਤਪਾਈਯੈਪੂਤਭਿਰਤਰਨਜਾਇ॥
ਪੁੱਤਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਸ਼ਠਾ ਪਾਈਦੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਹੀ ਯੁੱਧ ਵਿਚ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਲੜਦੇ ਹਨ।
‘We receive the honours through our sons, who fight for our integrity.’
ਇਹਮਿਸਰਾਖਿਉਡਾਇਕੈਲਈਸਲਾਕਛਪਾਇ॥੯॥
ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਸੁਆਹ ਉਡਾਣ ਦੇ ਬਹਾਨੇ (ਸੋਨੇ ਦੀ) ਸਲਾਖ਼ ਛੁਪਾ ਲਈ ॥੯॥
And she blew the dust in his eyes and, then, hid away his blow pipe.

ਤਬਐਸੋਤ੍ਰਿਯਬਚਨਉਚਾਰੇ॥
ਤਦ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ
ਮੋਰੇਪਤਿਪਰਦੇਸਪਧਾਰੇ॥
ਕਿ ਮੇਰਾ ਪਤੀ ਪਰਦੇਸ ਗਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
She said to him, ‘My husband has gone abroad.
ਤਾਤੇਮੈਔਸੀਕੋਡਾਰੋ॥
ਇਸ ਲਈ ਮੈਂ ਔਸੀਂ (ਲਕੀਰਾਂ) ਪਾਂਦੀ ਹਾਂ
ਐਹੈਨਐਹੈਨਾਥਬਿਚਾਰੋ॥੧੦॥
ਅਤੇ ਵਿਚਾਰਦੀ ਹਾਂ ਕਿ ਮੇਰੇ ਪਤੀ ਆਉਣਗੇ ਕਿ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਣਗੇ ॥੧੦॥
‘By drawing lines in the soil, I was guessing, when would my consort come.’(10)
