ਬਨਿਕਬੋਲਿਸਾਹੁਨਿਸੋਭਾਖ੍ਯੋ॥
ਬਨੀਏ ਨੇ ਸ਼ਾਹਣੀ ਨੂੰ ਆਖਿਆ।
ਰਾਮਹਮੈਨਿਪੂਤਕਰਿਰਾਖ੍ਯੋ॥
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਨਿਪੁਤਾ ਰਖਿਆ ਹੈ।
The Shah told his wife, ‘God has not bestowed us with a son.
ਧਨਬਹੁਧਾਮਕਾਮਕਿਹਆਵੈ॥
ਸਾਡੇ ਘਰ ਦਾ ਬਹੁਤ ਧਨ ਕਿਸ ਕੰਮ ਆਵੇਗਾ।
ਪੁਤ੍ਰਬਿਨਾਮੁਰਬੰਸਲਜਾਵੈ॥੨॥
ਪੁੱਤਰ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਬੰਸ ਲਜਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
‘What use is all this in our house without a son. Without progeny I feel ashamed of myself.(2)

ਸੁਨੁਸਾਹੁਨਿਹਮਰੇਬਿਧਹਿਪੂਤਨਦੀਨਾਧਾਮ॥
ਹੇ ਸ਼ਾਹਣੀ! ਸੁਣ, ਸਾਡੇ ਘਰ ਵਿਧਾਤਾ ਨੇ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਤਾ।
‘Listen, my wife, God has not given us a son.
ਚੋਰਹੁਸੁਤਕੈਰਾਖਿਯੈਜੋਹ੍ਯਾਂਲ੍ਯਾਵੈਰਾਮ॥੩॥
ਜੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਇਥੇ ਚੋਰ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਲੈ ਆਏ (ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਅਸੀਂ) ਪੁੱਤਰ ਬਣਾ ਕੇ ਰਖ ਲਵਾਂਗੇ ॥੩॥
‘If God sends a thief, we may keep him as our son.(3)

ਚੋਰਹੁਹੋਇਪੂਤਕਰਿਰਾਖੋ॥
ਚੋਰ ਹੋਏ (ਤਾਂ) ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਬਣਾ ਕੇ ਰਖ ਲਵਾਂਗੇ
ਤਾਤੇਕਛੂਨਮੁਖਤੇਭਾਖੋ॥
ਅਤੇ ਮੁਖ ਤੋਂ ਕੁਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਹਾਂਗੇ।
‘If thief came, we will keep him as our son and will say nothing more.
ਸਾਹੁਨਿਸਹਿਤਬਨਿਕਜਬਮਰਿਹੈ॥
ਸ਼ਾਹਣੀ ਸਹਿਤ ਜਦ ਬਨੀਆ ਮਰੇਗਾ
ਹਮਰੋਕਵਨਦਰਬੁਲੈਕਰਿਹੈ॥੪॥
ਤਾਂ ਸਾਡੇ ਧਨ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਕੀ ਕਰੇਗਾ ॥੪॥
‘If we are both dead, then what would happen to all this wealth. ?’( 4)
ਯਹਜਬਭਨਕਚੋਰਸੁਨਿਪਾਈ॥
ਜਦੋਂ ਚੋਰ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਗੱਲ ਦੀ ਭਿਣਕ ਪਈ
ਫੂਲਿਗਯੋਬਸਤ੍ਰਨਨਹਿਮਾਈ॥
ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਫੁਲ ਗਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਬਸਤ੍ਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਨਾ ਸਮਾਇਆ।
When the thief heard their talk, his joy found no bounds,
ਜਾਇਬਨਿਕਕੋਪੂਤਕਹੈਹੋਂ॥
ਜਾ ਕੇ ਬਨੀਏ ਦਾ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਅਖਵਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ
ਯਾਕੈਮਰੇਸਕਲਧਨਲੈਹੋਂ॥੫॥
ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਮਰਨ ਉਤੇ ਸਾਰਾ ਧਨ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ॥੫॥
(He thought,) ‘I will become the son of the Shah and after his death, I will own all the riches.’(5)
ਤਬਲੋਚੋਰਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿਪਰਗਯੋ॥
ਤਦ ਤਕ ਬਨੀਏ ਦੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਚੋਰ ਉਤੇ ਪਈ
ਅਧਿਕਬਨਿਕਕੇਆਨੰਦਭਯੋ॥
ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਬਹੁਤ ਆਨੰਦਿਤ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ।
Then their eyes fell on the thief and they became very happy.
ਪਲ੍ਰਯੋਪਲੋਸ੍ਰਯੋਸੁਤੁਬਿਧਿਦੀਨੋ॥
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਪਲਿਆ ਪੋਸਿਆ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਿਆ ਹੈ
ਤਾਕੋਪੂਤਪੂਤਕਹਿਲੀਨੋ॥੬॥
ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ 'ਪੁੱਤਰ ਪੁੱਤਰ' ਕਹਿ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਵਾਨ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ ॥੬॥
‘I have been endowed with a grown up son,’ and he then hugged him claiming ‘my son’, ‘my son.’(6)
ਖਾਟਉਪਰਤਸਕਰਹਿਬੈਠਾਯੋ॥
ਚੋਰ ਨੂੰ ਮੰਜੀ ਉਤੇ ਬਿਠਾ ਲਿਆ।
ਭਲੋਭਲੋਪਕਵਾਨਖਵਾਯੋ॥
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਚੰਗਾ ਭੋਜਨ ਖਵਾਇਆ।
They made him to sit on the bed and served him dainty food.
ਪੂਤਪੂਤਕਹਿਸਾਹੁਨਿਧਾਈ॥
ਪੁੱਤਰ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਕਰਦੀ ਸ਼ਾਹਣੀ ਵੀ ਆ ਗਈ
ਸਾਹੁਚਉਤਰੇਜਾਇਜਤਾਈ॥੭॥
ਅਤੇ ਬਨੀਏ ਨੇ (ਘਰ ਦੇ) ਚੌਬੂਤਰੇ (ਉਤੇ) ਜਾ ਕੇ (ਸਭ ਨੂੰ) ਦਸਿਆ ॥੭॥
The Shah’s wife announcing, ‘My son, my son.’ went around and informed everybody.(7)

ਪੰਚਪਯਾਦੇਸੰਗਲੈਚੋਰਹਿਦਯੋਦਿਖਾਇ॥
ਪੰਜ ਪਿਆਦੇ (ਸਿਪਾਹੀ) ਨਾਲ ਲੈ ਕੇ (ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਚੋਰ ਵਿਖਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ।
When five officials called in she showed the thief to them,
ਇਹਪੈਂਡੇਆਯੋਹੁਤੋਮੈਸੁਤਕਹਿਯੋਬੁਲਾਇ॥੮॥
ਇਹ ਰਸਤੇ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ, ਮੈਂ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਬੁਲਾ ਕੇ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਬਣਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ॥੮॥
And told, ‘ He was roaming around and I have adopted him as our son.(8)

ਅਮਿਤਦਰਬੁਹਮਰੇਬਿਧਿਦਯੋ॥
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਧਨ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ।
ਪੂਤਨਧਾਮਹਮਾਰੇਭਯੋ॥
ਸਾਡੇ ਘਰ ਕੋਈ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
‘God has endowed us with lot of wealth, but we had no issue.
ਯਾਕਉਹਮਕਹਿਪੂਤਉਚਾਰੋ॥
ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਅਸੀਂ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਕਿਹਾ ਹੈ।
ਤਾਤੇਤੁਮਮਿਲਿਕੈਨਹਿਮਾਰੋ॥੯॥
(ਇਸ ਲਈ) ਤੁਸੀਂ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਨਾ ਮਾਰੋ ॥੯॥
‘We have taken him as our son and now you do not punish him.’(9)
ਪੂਤਪੂਤਬਨਿਯਾਕਹਿਰਹਿਯੋ॥
ਬਨੀਆ 'ਪੁੱਤਰ ਪੁੱਤਰ' ਕਹਿੰਦਾ ਰਿਹਾ,
ਪੰਚਪਯਾਦਨਤਸਕਰਗਹਿਯੋ॥
ਪਰ ਪੰਜ ਸਿਪਾਹੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਚੋਰ ਨੂੰ ਫੜ ਲਿਆ।
The Shah kept on addressing him as his son, but five officials arrested him.
ਤਾਕੋਕਹਿਯੋਏਕਨਹਿਕੀਨੋ॥
ਬਨੀਏ ਦੀ ਇਕ ਨਾ ਮੰਨੀ
ਲੈਤਸਕਰਫਾਸੀਸੋਦੀਨੋ॥੧੦॥
ਅਤੇ ਚੋਰ ਨੂੰ ਫਾਂਸੀ ਦੇ ਦਿੱਤੀ ॥੧੦॥
They did not listen to him and put the thief on the gallows.(10)(1)

In the house of Mahaan Singh, there used to come a number of thieves.
ਨਿਤਿਪ੍ਰਤਿਤਾਕੇਲ੍ਯਾਵਹੀਅਧਿਕਖਜਾਨੋਮਾਰਿ॥੧॥
ਨਿੱਤ ਪ੍ਰਤਿ ਬਹੁਤ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ (ਧਨ ਦੌਲਤ) ਲੁਟ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਲਿਆ ਕੇ ਦਿੰਦੇ ॥੧॥
They always stole lot of wealth and took that to their homes.(1)

ਇਕ ਚੋਰ ਧਨ ਚੁਰਾਉਣ ਲਈ (ਉਥੇ) ਆ ਗਿਆ।
ਸੋਗਹਿਲਯੋਜਾਨਨਹਿਪਾਯੋ॥
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ (ਮਹਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ) ਪਕੜ ਲਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਜਾਣ ਨਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ।
A thief came to steal one day and was caught. Mahaan Singh told
ਮਹਾਸਿੰਘਤਾਕੋਯੌਕਹਿਯੋ॥
ਮਹਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ,
ਤੁਮਅਪਨੇਚਿਤਮੈਦ੍ਰਿੜਰਹਿਯੋ॥੨॥
ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਿਤ ਵਿਚ ਪੱਕਾ ਰਹੀਂ ॥੨॥
him to remain firm in his heart.(2)

ਤੇਰੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ (ਸਿਪਾਹੀ) ਤਲਵਾਰ ਕਢ ਕੇ ਖੜੋਤੇ ਹੋਣਗੇ
‘They (the police) might put a sharp sword above your head,
ਤੁਮਡਰਿਕਛੁਨਉਚਾਰਿਯੋਲੈਹੋਂਜਿਯਤਉਬਾਰਿ॥੩॥
ਪਰ ਤੂੰ ਡਰ ਕੇ ਕੁਝ ਨਾ ਬੋਲੀਂ, ਮੈਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਜੀਉਂਦਾ ਬਚਾ ਲਵਾਂਗਾ ॥੩॥
‘But you don’t show any dread as I will save you.(3)
