ਬਡੇਰਾਜਕੀਦੁਹਿਤਾਸੋਹੈ॥
(ਉਹ) ਵੱਡੇ ਰਾਜੇ ਦੀ ਧੀ ਸੀ।
ਜਾਸਮਅਵਰਨਦੂਸਰਕੋਹੈ॥੧॥
ਉਸ ਵਰਗਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਦੂਜਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ॥੧॥
She was the daughter of a big Raja and there was none other like her.(1)
ਤਿਨਸੁੰਦਰਇਕਪੁਰਖਨਿਹਾਰਾ॥
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਇਕ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਪੁਰਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖਿਆ।
ਕਾਮਬਾਨਤਾਕੇਤਨਮਾਰਾ॥
ਕਾਮ ਦੇਵ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਤਨ ਵਿਚ ਬਾਣ ਮਾਰਿਆ।
She saw a handsome man and the Cupids arrow went trough her body.
ਨਿਰਖਿਸਜਨਕੀਛਬਿਉਰਝਾਈ॥
(ਉਸ) ਸਜਨ (ਮਿਤਰ) ਦੀ ਸੁੰਦਰਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ (ਉਸ ਨਾਲ) ਉਲਝ ਗਈ
ਪਠੈਸਹਚਰੀਲਯੋਬੁਲਾਈ॥੨॥
ਅਤੇ ਦਾਸੀ ਨੂੰ ਭੇਜ ਕੇ (ਉਸ ਨੂੰ) ਬੁਲਾ ਲਿਆ ॥੨॥
She was entrapped in his splendour and she sent her maid to invite him.(2)
ਕਾਮਕੇਲਤਿਹਸੰਗਕਮਾਯੋ॥
ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਕਾਮ-ਕ੍ਰੀੜਾ ਕੀਤੀ
ਭਾਤਿਭਾਤਿਸੋਗਰੇਲਗਾਯੋ॥
ਅਤੇ ਭਾਂਤ ਭਾਂਤ ਨਾਲ ਗਲੇ ਲਗਾਇਆ।
She enjoyed sex with him and had various sex-plays.
ਰਾਤ੍ਰਿਦੋਪਹਰਬੀਤੇਸੋਏ॥
ਰਾਤ ਦੇ ਦੋ ਪਹਿਰ ਬੀਤਣ ਤੇ ਸੁੱਤੇ
ਚਿਤਕੇਦੁਹੂੰਸਕਲਦੁਖਖੋਏ॥੩॥
ਅਤੇ ਦੋਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਮਨ ਤੋਂ ਸਾਰੇ ਦੁਖ ਭੁਲਾ ਦਿੱਤੇ ॥੩॥
When the night had gone two watches, they ravelled again.(3)
ਸੋਵਤਉਠੈਬਹੁਰਿਰਤਿਮਾਨੈ॥
ਸੌਂ ਕੇ ਉਠਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਦ ਫਿਰ ਸੰਯੋਗ ਕੀਤਾ।
ਰਹੀਰੈਨਿਜਬਘਰੀਪਛਾਨੈ॥
ਜਦੋਂ ਰਾਤ ਇਕ ਘੜੀ ਰਹਿ ਗਈ ਸਮਝੀ,
They would get up from the sleep and make love. When one-watch was left.,
ਆਪੁਚੇਰਿਯਹਿਜਾਇਜਗਾਵੈ॥
ਤਾਂ (ਉਸ ਨੇ) ਆਪ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਦਾਸੀ ਨੂੰ ਜਗਾਇਆ
ਤਿਹਸੰਗਦੈਉਹਿਧਾਮਪਠਾਵੈ॥੪॥
ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ (ਯਾਰ) ਨੂੰ ਘਰ ਭੇਜ ਦਿੱਤਾ ॥੪॥
The maid would wake them up and accompany him to his home.(4)
ਇਹਬਿਧਿਸੋਤਿਹਰੋਜਬੁਲਾਵੈ॥
ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਰੋਜ਼ ਬੁਲਾਉਂਦੀ ਸੀ
ਅੰਤਰਾਤ੍ਰਿਕੇਧਾਮਪਠਾਵੈ॥
ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਤ ਵੇਲੇ ਘਰ ਨੂੰ ਭੇਜ ਦਿੰਦੀ ਸੀ।
This way the lady used to call him everyday and send him back at the day break.
ਲਪਟਿਲਪਟਿਤਾਸੋਰਤਿਮਾਨੈ॥
ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਲਿਪਟ ਲਿਪਟ ਕੇ ਰਤੀ ਮਨਾਉਂਦੀ ਸੀ।
ਭੇਦਔਰਕੋਊਪੁਰਖਨਜਾਨੈ॥੫॥
ਇਸ ਭੇਦ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਸੀ ॥੫॥
Whole night she used to indulge in sex and no body else could discern.(5)
ਏਕਦਿਵਸਤਿਹਲਿਯਾਬੁਲਾਈ॥
ਇਕ ਦਿਨ (ਉਸ ਨੇ) ਉਸ (ਮਿਤਰ) ਨੂੰ ਬੁਲਾ ਲਿਆ
ਕਾਮਕੇਲਕਰਿਦਯੋਉਠਾਈ॥
ਅਤੇ ਕਾਮ-ਕ੍ਰੀੜਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਉਠਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ।
One day she called him and after sex-play bade him to go.
ਚੇਰੀਕਹਨਿੰਦ੍ਰਾਅਤਿਭਈ॥
ਦਾਸੀ ਨੂੰ ਬਹੁਤ ਨੀਂਦਰ ਆ ਗਈ,
ਸੋਇਰਹੀਤਿਹਸੰਗਨਗਈ॥੬॥
(ਇਸ ਲਈ) ਸੁੱਤੀ ਰਹੀ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਨਾ ਗਈ ॥੬॥
The maid was in deep slumber and could not accompany him.(6)
ਚੇਰੀਬਿਨਾਜਾਰਹੂੰਧਾਯੋ॥
ਮਿਤਰ ਦਾਸੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੀ ਚਲਾ ਗਿਆ
ਚੌਕੀਹੁਤੀਤਹਾਚਲਿਆਯੋ॥
ਅਤੇ ਉਥੇ ਆ ਪਹੁੰਚਿਆ ਜਿਥੇ (ਪਹਿਰੇਦਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ) ਚੌਕੀ ਸੀ।
The lover left the place without the maid and reached where the watchmen were posted.
ਤਾਕੋਕਾਲਪਹੂੰਚ੍ਯੋਆਈ॥
ਉਸ ਦਾ ਕਾਲ ਆ ਪਹੁੰਚਿਆ ਸੀ,
ਤਿਨਮੂਰਖਕਛੁਬਾਤਨਪਾਈ॥੭॥
(ਪਰ) ਉਸ ਮੂਰਖ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਭੇਦ ਨੂੰ ਨਾ ਸਮਝਿਆ ॥੭॥
His bad time had come but that idiot did not grasp the mystery.(7)

(ਪਹਿਰੇਦਾਰਾਂ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪੁਛਿਆ-) ਓਏ! ਤੂੰ ਕੌਣ ਹੈਂ, ਕਿਥੇ ਚਲਿਆ ਹੈਂ, ਇਥੇ ਕਿਸ ਕੰਮ ਲਈ ਆਇਆ ਸੈਂ?
The watchmen asked who was he and where was he going.
ਯਹਤਿਹਬਾਤਨਸਹਿਸਕ੍ਯੋਚਲਾਤੁਰਤੁਦੈਭਾਜ॥੮॥
ਇਹ ਗੱਲ ਉਹ ਸਹਿ ਨਾ ਸਕਿਆ (ਭਾਵ ਸਮਝ ਨਾ ਸਕਿਆ) ਅਤੇ ਤੁਰਤ ਭਜ ਪਿਆ ॥੮॥
He could not reply and started to run away.(8) .
ਤਿਨੈਹਟਾਵੈਜ੍ਵਾਬਦੈਚੇਰੀਹੁਤੀਨਸਾਥ॥
ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਜਵਾਬ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਹਟਾਉਂਦੀ, ਪਰ ਦਾਸੀ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ।
If the maid were with him, she would have replied.
ਧਾਇਪਰੇਤੇਚੋਰਕਹਿਗਹਿਲੀਨਾਤਿਹਹਾਥ॥੯॥
ਉਹ (ਪਹਿਰੇਦਾਰ) ਚੋਰ ਕਹਿ ਕੇ (ਉਸ ਦੇ) ਪਿਛੇ ਭਜ ਪਏ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਹੱਥ ਨਾਲ ਪਕੜ ਲਿਆ ॥੯॥
But now the watchman chased him and caught him from his hand.(9)

ਚਲੀਖਬਰਰਾਨੀਪਹਿਆਈ॥
(ਇਸ ਘਟਨਾ ਦੀ) ਖ਼ਬਰ ਰਾਣੀ ਤਕ ਪਹੁੰਚੀ।
ਬੈਠੀਕਹਾਕਾਲਕੀਖਾਈ॥
(ਦਾਸੀ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ-) ਹੇ ਕਾਲ ਦੀਏ ਮਾਰੀਏ! (ਤੂੰ ਇਥੇ) ਕਿਉਂ ਬੈਠੀ ਹੈਂ।
The spreading rumour reached the Rani, and she felt herself being Pushed towards the hell.
ਤੁਮਰੋਮੀਤਚੋਰਕਰਿਗਹਿਯੋ॥
ਤੇਰੇ ਮਿਤਰ ਨੂੰ (ਪਹਿਰੇਦਾਰਾਂ ਨੇ) ਚੋਰ ਸਮਝ ਕੇ ਪਕੜ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ
ਸਭਹੂੰਭੇਦਤੁਹਾਰੋਲਹਿਯੋ॥੧੦॥
ਅਤੇ ਸਭ ਨੇ ਤੇਰਾ ਭੇਦ ਪਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ॥੧੦॥
‘Your paramour has been apprehended being labelled as a thief and all your secrets are going to be exposed.’(10)
ਰਾਨੀਹਾਥਹਾਥਸੌਮਾਰਿਯੋ॥
ਰਾਣੀ ਨੇ ਹੱਥ ਉਤੇ ਹੱਥ ਮਾਰਿਆ
ਕੇਸਪੇਸਸੋਜੂਟਉਪਾਰਿਯੋ॥
ਅਤੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਦੇ ਵਾਲਾਂ ਦਾ ਜੂੜਾ ਪੁਟ ਸੁਟਿਆ।
Rani, in desperation, hit her hands and pulled her hair.
ਜਾਦਿਨਪਿਯਪ੍ਯਾਰੇਬਿਛੁਰਾਹੀ॥
ਜਿਸ ਦਿਨ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਵਿਛੜਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਤਾਸਮਦੁਖਜਗਦੂਸਰਨਾਹੀ॥੧੧॥
ਉਸ ਵਰਗਾ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਦੁਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ॥੧੧॥
The day when one’s companion is taken away, that day becomes most agonizing.( 11)

ਲੋਕ-ਲਾਜ ਦੇ ਡਰ ਤੋਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਬਚਾ ਨਾ ਸਕੀ।
To avoid social ignominy, she sacrificed her love and could not save him,
ਮੀਤਪ੍ਰੀਤਤਜਿਕੈਹਨਾਸਤੁਦ੍ਰਵਦਯੋਬਹਾਇ॥੧੨॥
ਮਿਤਰ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਨੂੰ ਤਿਆਗ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਸਤਲੁਜ ਨਦੀ ਵਿਚ ਰੋੜ੍ਹ ਦਿੱਤਾ ॥੧੨॥
And he was killed and thrown in the River Satluj.(12)

ਕਹਿਯੋਕਿਯਹਨ੍ਰਿਪਬਧਕਹਆਯੋ॥
(ਰਾਣੀ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਗੱਲ ਧੁੰਮਾ ਦਿੱਤੀ) ਕਿ ਇਹ ਰਾਜੇ ਨੂੰ ਕਤਲ ਕਰਨ ਆਇਆ ਸੀ।
ਇਹਪੂਛਹੁਤੁਹਿਕਵਨਪਠਾਯੋ॥
ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਪੁਛੋ ਕਿ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਸ ਨੇ ਭੇਜਿਆ ਸੀ?
She told every body to announce that he had come to kill the Raja.
ਮਾਰਿਤੁਰਤੁਤਹਿਨਦੀਬਹਾਯੋ॥
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਤੁਰਤ ਮਾਰ ਕੇ ਨਦੀ ਵਿਚ ਵਹਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ।
ਭੇਦਦੂਸਰੇਪੁਰਖਨਪਾਯੋ॥੧੩॥
ਇਸ ਦਾ ਭੇਦ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਿਆ ॥੧੩॥
He was killed and his body was washed away in the river and the secret remained undisclosed.(13)(1)

The minister had narrated the fifty-third tale.
ਸੁਕਬਿਰਾਮਔਰੈਚਲੀਤਬਹੀਕਥਾਪ੍ਰਸੰਗ॥੧॥
ਕਵੀ ਰਾਮ (ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ) ਉਸ ਵੇਲੇ ਹੋਰ ਕਥਾ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਗ ਚਲ ਪਿਆ ॥੧॥
Now, as the poet Ram says, a series of other tales begin.(1)
ਤ੍ਰਿਤਿਯਾਮੰਤ੍ਰੀਯੌਕਹੀਸੁਨਹੁਕਥਾਮਮਨਾਥ॥
ਤੀਜੇ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੀ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ, ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ! ਸੁਣੋ,
Then the Minister expounded, ‘Listen to the tale, my Master.’
ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀਕਹਚਰਿਤ੍ਰਇਕਕਹੋਤੁਹਾਰੇਸਾਥ॥੨॥
ਮੈਂ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਇਕ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਦਾ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਸੁਣਾਉਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ ॥੨॥
Now I narrate the Chritar of a woman.(2)

ਚਾਭਾਜਾਟਹਮਾਰੇਰਹੈ॥
(ਇਕ) ਚਾਂਭਾ ਜੱਟ ਸਾਡੇ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਸੀ।
ਜਾਤਿਜਾਟਤਾਕੀਜਗਕਹੈ॥
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਰੇ ਜਟ ਜਾਤਿ ਦਾ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਸਨ।
Chanbha Jat used to live here; he was known to the world as a Jat (peasant),
ਕਾਧਲਤਾਕੀਤ੍ਰਿਯਸੌਰਹਈ॥
ਕਾਂਧਲ (ਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ) ਉਸ ਦੀ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਕੋਲ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਸੀ,
ਬਾਲਮਤੀਕਹਸੁਕਛੁਨਕਹਈ॥੩॥
(ਪਰ) ਬਾਲ ਮਤੀ (ਇਸਤਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਜੱਟ) ਕੁਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਹਿੰਦਾ ਸੀ ॥੩॥
A man called Kandhal used to pursue his wife but he could never check her.(3)

ਏਕਚਛੁਤਾਕੇਰਹੈਮੁਖਕੁਰੂਪਕੇਸਾਥ॥
ਉਸ (ਜੱਟ) ਦੇ ਕੁਰੂਪ ਮੁਖ ਉਤੇ ਇਕ ਅੱਖ ਹੀ ਸੀ।
He had only one eye and, due to this, his face looked ugly.
ਬਾਲਮਤੀਕੋਭਾਖਈਬਿਹਸਿਆਪੁਕੋਨਾਥੁ॥੪॥
ਬਾਲ ਮਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਹਸ ਕੇ (ਉਹ) ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ (ਉਸ ਦਾ) ਸੁਆਮੀ ਕਹਿੰਦਾ ਸੀ ॥੪॥
Baal Mati always addressed him jovially and called him as her Master.(4)

ਲੈਜਾਘੈਦੋਊਭੋਗਕਮਾਵਤ॥
ਅਤੇ (ਬਾਲ ਮਤੀ ਦੀਆਂ) ਦੋਹਾਂ ਜੰਘਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਕੜ ਕੇ ਭੋਗ ਕਮਾਉਂਦਾ।
At night Kandhal would come and they would indulge in sex-play.
ਕਛੁਕਜਾਗਿਜਬਪਾਵਡੁਲਾਵੈ॥
ਜਦੋਂ (ਪਤੀ) ਜਾਗ ਕੇ ਕੁਝ ਪੈਰ ਹਿਲਾਂਦਾ
ਦ੍ਰਿਗਪਰਹਾਥਰਾਖਿਤ੍ਰਿਯਜਾਵੈ॥੫॥
ਤਾਂ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਅੱਖ ਉਤੇ ਹੱਥ ਧਰ ਦਿੰਦੀ ॥੫॥
If the husband awoke, she would place her hand on his eyes.(5)
ਹਾਥਧਰੇਰਜਨੀਜੜਜਾਨੈ॥
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹੱਥ ਰਖਣ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਮੂਰਖ ਰਾਤ ('ਰਜਨੀ') ਹੀ ਸਮਝਦਾ
ਸੋਇਰਹੈਨਹਿਕਛੂਬਖਾਨੈ॥
ਅਤੇ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੁਝ ਕਹੇ ਸੁੱਤਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ।
With hand on his eyes, that idiot would keep sleeping thinking, still it was night time.
ਇਕਦਿਨਨਿਰਖਿਜਾਰਕੋਧਾਯੋ॥
ਇਕ ਦਿਨ (ਉਸ ਨੇ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਦੇ) ਯਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਜਾਂਦਿਆਂ ਵੇਖਿਆ
ਏਕਚਛੁਅਤਿਕੋਪਜਗਾਯੋ॥੬॥
ਤਾਂ (ਉਸ) ਇਕ ਅੱਖ ਵਾਲੇ (ਕਾਣੇ) ਨੂੰ ਬਹੁਤ ਗੁੱਸਾ ਆਇਆ ॥੬॥
One day when he saw the lover leaving, the one-eye blind flew into a rage.(6)
