ਉਹ ਨਦੀ ਨੂੰ ਤਰ ਕੇ ਘਰ ਆ ਗਈ
ਪੌਢਿਰਹੀਜਨੁਸਾਪਚਬਾਈ॥
ਅਤੇ (ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਲੰਬੀ ਪੈ ਗਈ ਮਾਨੋ ਸੱਪ ਨੇ ਡੰਗਿਆ ਹੋਵੇ।
After crossing the stream she came home and lie down as if a reptile had bitten her.
ਪਾਛੇਤਰਿਡੋਗਰਹੂੰਆਯੋ॥
ਪਿਛੋਂ ਡੋਗਰ ਵੀ (ਨਦੀ) ਤਰ ਕੇ ਆ ਗਿਆ।

ਮੂਰਖਨਾਰਿਭੇਦਨਹਿਪਾਯੋ॥੯॥
(ਪਰ) ਉਸ ਮੂਰਖ ਨਾਰੀ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਭੇਦ ਨੂੰ ਨਾ ਸਮਝਿਆ ॥੯॥
Soon after Dogar came, but poor girl did not know the secret.(9)
ਐਸਭਾਤਿਸੋਕਾਲਬਿਹਾਨ੍ਰਯੋ॥
ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਮਾ ਬੀਤ ਗਿਆ।
ਬੀਤਾਬਰਖਏਕਦਿਨਜਾਨ੍ਯੋ॥
ਸਾਲ ਬੀਤਿਆ ਇਕ ਦਿਨ ਵਰਗਾ ਲਗਦਾ ਸੀ।
A. year lapsed like this, and after one year, one day came,
ਤਬਡੋਗਰਇਹਭਾਤਿਉਚਾਰੋ॥
ਤਦ ਡੋਗਰ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ,
ਕਰੋਨਾਰਿਇਕਿਕਾਜਹਮਾਰੋ॥੧੦॥
ਹੇ ਇਸਤਰੀ! ਮੇਰਾ ਇਕ ਕੰਮ ਕਰੋ ॥੧੦॥
When Dogar requested the woman to do him a favour,(10)
ਏਕਤ੍ਰਿਯਾਕਾਰਜਮੁਰਕੀਜਹੁ॥
(ਡੋਗਰ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ-) ਹੇ ਇਸਤਰੀ! ਮੇਰਾ ਇਕ ਕੰਮ ਕਰੋ
ਮਖਨੀਕਾਢਿਧਾਮਤੇਦੀਜਹੁ॥
ਅਤੇ ਘਰੋਂ ਮੱਖਣ ਕਢ ਕੇ ਲਿਆ ਦਿਓ।
‘Please lady do me an errand and get me milk-butter from home.’
ਜਾਤਕਹਿਯੋਤਹਤ੍ਰਿਯਮੈਨਾਹੀ॥
ਉਸ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦੀ,
ਹੇਰਿਅੰਧੇਰਡਰੋਮਨਮਾਹੀ॥੧੧॥
(ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਮੈਂ) ਹਨੇਰਾ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਬਹੁਤ ਡਰਦੀ ਹਾਂ ॥੧੧॥
Woman said, ‘I will not go because in the dark I get scared.’(11)
ਡੋਗਰਕਹਾਲਗਤਦੁਖੁਮੋਕੋ॥
ਡੋਗਰ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ (ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾ ਕਰਨ ਤੇ) ਮੈਨੂੰ ਬਹੁਤ ਅਫ਼ਸੋਸ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਭੂਲਿਗਯੋਵਹਦਿਨਤ੍ਰਿਯਤੋਕੋ॥
ਹੇ ਇਸਤਰੀ! ਤੈਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਦਿਨ ਭੁਲ ਗਿਆ
Dogar said, ‘I am very much distressed, remember that day,
ਨਦੀਪੈਰਿਕਰਿਪਾਰਪਰਾਈ॥
ਜਦੋਂ ਤੂੰ ਨਦੀ ਤਰ ਕੇ ਪਾਰ ਗਈ ਸੈਂ
ਜਾਰਬਹਾਇਬਹੁਰਿਘਰਆਈ॥੧੨॥
ਅਤੇ ਯਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਰੋੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਫਿਰ ਘਰ ਆਈ ਸੈਂ ॥੧੨॥
‘When you had gone across the stream and after washing away your friend came back home.’(22)
ਚਮਕਿਉਠੀਜਬਬਚਨਉਚਾਰੇ॥
ਜਦ (ਡੋਗਰ ਨੇ ਇਹ) ਬੋਲ ਕਹੇ (ਤਾਂ ਉਹ) ਭੜਕ ਉਠੀ
‘When you had gone across the stream and after washing away your friend came back home.’(22)
ਮੋਰਭੇਦਇਨਸਕਲਨਿਹਾਰੇ॥
ਕਿ ਇਸ ਨੇ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਾਰਾ ਭੇਦ ਪਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ।
Hearing this she was perturbed that he knew all her secret.
ਤਾਤੇਅਬਹੀਯਾਰਿਸੰਘਾਰੋ॥
ਇਸ ਲਈ (ਮੈਂ) ਹੁਣੇ ਹੀ ਇਸ ਯਾਰ (ਪਤੀ) ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰਦੀ ਹਾਂ
ਮਾਰਿਚੋਰਇਹਗਏਉਚਾਰੋ॥੧੩॥
ਅਤੇ (ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਕਹਾਂਗੀ ਕਿ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਚੋਰ ਮਾਰ ਗਏ ਹਨ ॥੧੩॥
‘Then why not kill him now and declare that some thief had murdered him.’(13)

ਪੈਠਿਅੰਧੇਰੇਧਾਮਮਹਿਕਾਢਿਲਈਕਰਵਾਰਿ॥
(ਉਸ ਨੇ) ਹਨੇਰ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਵੜ ਕੇ ਤਲਵਾਰ ਕਢ ਲਈ
In the house when it was dark, she took the sword out,
ਨਿਜੁਪਤਿਪੈਹਤਕੇਨਿਮਿਤਿਕਰੇਪਚਾਸਿਕਵਾਰਿ॥੧੪॥
ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰਨ ਲਈ ਪੰਜਾਹ ਕੁ ਵਾਰ ਕੀਤੇ ॥੧੪॥
To kill her husband she struck fifty times in the dark.(l4)
ਨਿਰਖਿਚਮਕਤਰਵਾਰਕੀਦੁਰਯਾਮਹਿਖਤਰਜਾਇ॥
(ਉਹ ਡੋਗਰ) ਤਲਵਾਰ ਦੀ ਚਮਕ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਮਝ ਦੇ ਹੇਠਾਂ ਜਾ ਲੁਕਿਆ
But, observing the glitter of the sword, he had already hidden himself under a buffalo,
ਤਨਿਕਨਬ੍ਰਿਣਲਾਗਨਦਈਇਹਛਲਗਯੋਬਚਾਇ॥੧੫॥
ਅਤੇ ਜ਼ਰਾ ਜਿੰਨਾ ਵੀ ਜ਼ਖ਼ਮ ਨਾ ਲਗਣ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਛਲ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਉਸ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ) ਨੂੰ ਬਚਾ ਲਿਆ ॥੧੫॥
And cheating thus saved himself of any injuries.(15)
ਪੈਰਿਨਦੀਗਈਮਿਤ੍ਰਕੋਆਈਤਹੀਬਹਾਇ॥
ਉਹ (ਇਸਤਰੀ) ਨਦੀ ਨੂੰ ਤਰ ਕੇ ਗਈ ਅਤੇ ਮਿਤਰ ਨੂੰ ਉਥੇ ਰੋੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਪਰਤ ਆਈ।
She went and swam across the stream where she had washed away her friend.
ਨਿਜੁਪਤਿਕੋਘਾਇਲਕਿਯਾਨੈਕਨਰਹੀਲਜਾਇ॥੧੬॥
(ਫਿਰ) ਆਪਣੇ ਪਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਘਾਇਲ ਕੀਤਾ, ਪਰ ਥੋੜੀ ਜਿਹੀ ਵੀ ਸ਼ਰਮਿੰਦੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਈ ॥੧੬॥
She could not hurt her husband but she depicted no remorse.(l6)(1)

ਨਰਚਰਿਤ੍ਰਨ੍ਰਿਪਕੇਨਿਕਟਿਮੰਤ੍ਰੀਕਹਾਬਿਚਾਰਿ॥
ਮੰਤ੍ਰੀ ਨੇ ਰਾਜੇ ਪਾਸ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਪੂਰਵਕ ਮਰਦ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਕਿਹਾ
The Minister of the people, after pondering over,
ਤਬੈਕਥਾਛਤੀਸਵੀਇਹਬਿਧਿਕਹੀਸੁਧਾਰਿ॥੧॥
ਅਤੇ ਫਿਰ ੩੬ ਵੀਂ ਕਥਾ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਸੁਧਾਰ ਕੇ ਕਹੀ ॥੧॥
Related the thirty-sixth Chritar with due amends.(1)
ਤਵਨਤ੍ਰਿਯਾਕੋਤੁਰਤੁਹੀਡੋਗਰਘਾਉਉਬਾਰਿ॥
(ਉਸ) ਡੋਗਰ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਦੇ ਵਾਰ ਤੋਂ (ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ) ਬਚਾ ਕੇ
That Dogar, very shortly, killed his woman,
ਤਾਹਿਤੁਰਤੁਮਾਰਤਭਯੋਗਰੇਰਸਹਿਯਡਾਰਿ॥੨॥
ਅਤੇ ਤੁਰਤ (ਉਸ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਦੇ) ਗਲੇ ਵਿਚ ਰਸੀ ਪਾ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ॥੨॥
By putting a rope around her throat.(2)
ਵਾਰਸਿਯਾਕਹਛਾਨਿਕੈਬਾਧਿਸਿਬਰੋਬਨਾਇ॥
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਰਸੀ ਨੂੰ ਝੌਂਪੜੀ ਨਾਲ ਚੰਗੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਬੰਨ੍ਹ ਦਿੱਤਾ
He had tied the rope at the rooftop of the hut,
ਆਪੁਊਚਕੂਕਤਭਯੋਲੋਗਨਸਭਨਸੁਨਾਇ॥੩॥
ਅਤੇ ਆਪ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਣਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਉੱਚਾ ਕੂਕਣ ਲਗਾ ॥੩॥
And, himself climbing over the roof, started to shout.(3)

ਸਭਲੋਗਨਕਹਧਾਮਬੁਲਾਯੋ॥
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਘਰ ਬੁਲਾਇਆ
ਨਿਜੁਦੇਹੀਕੋਘਾਵਦਿਖਾਯੋ॥
ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਸ਼ਰੀਰ ਦੇ ਜ਼ਖ਼ਮ ਵਿਖਾਏ।
He called all the people and showed them the injuries on his body,
ਪੁਨਿਤਿਨਕੋਲੈਨਾਰਿਦਿਖਾਰੀ॥
ਫਿਰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਵਿਖਾਈ
ਰੋਇਕੂਕਊਚੇਕਰਿਮਾਰੀ॥੪॥
ਅਤੇ ਰੋ ਕੇ ਉੱਚੀ ਕੂਕ ਮਾਰੀ ॥੪॥
And then he showed them the body of the woman and cried aloud.(4)
ਜਬਮੋਰੇਤ੍ਰਿਯਘਾਵਨਿਹਾਰਿਯੋ॥
(ਅਤੇ ਕਹਿਣ ਲਗਾ) ਜਦੋਂ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਨੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਜ਼ਖ਼ਮ ਵੇਖੇ
ਅਧਿਕਸੋਕਚਿਤਮਾਝਬਿਚਾਰਿਯੋ॥
ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਬਹੁਤ ਦੁਖ ਮੰਨਾਇਆ।
‘When the woman saw my injuries, she became very worried.
ਭੇਦਪਾਇਦਿਯਮੁਹਿਕਹਟਾਰੀ॥
ਮੈਨੂੰ ਵਖਰਿਆਂ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਟਾਲ ਦਿੱਤਾ
ਲੈਪਾਸੀਸੁਰਲੋਕਬਿਹਾਰੀ॥੫॥
ਅਤੇ (ਆਪ) ਫਾਂਸੀ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਸਵਰਗ ਸਿਧਾਰ ਗਈ ॥੫॥
‘Pushing me on one side she put rope around her (throat) and headed towards the heavens.(5)

ਦੂਧਦੁਹਤਕਟਿਯਾਨਿਮਤਿਮਹਿਖੀਮਾਰਿਸਮੋਹਿ॥
ਮੈਨੂੰ ਦੁੱਧ ਚੋਣ ਵੇਲੇ ਮਝ ਨੇ ਕਟੀ ਲਈ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਹੈ।
‘Wanting to have her calf, the buffalo had hit me,
ਘਾਵਭਯੋਤਰਵਾਰਸੋਕਹਾਬਤਾਊਤੋਹ॥੬॥
(ਉਹ ਸਟ) ਤਲਵਾਰ ਦੀ ਸਟ ਵਰਗੀ ਸੀ, ਮੈਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਕੀ ਦਸਾਂ ॥੬॥
‘How could 1 explain? It cut me like a sword.(6)
