ਹੇ ਰਾਜਨ! ਸੁਣੋ, ਤੇਰੇ ਬਿਨਾ ਮੈਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਹੀ ਸ਼ਰੀਰਕ ਦੁਖ ਪਾਇਆ ਹੈ।
‘Listen, Raja, this damsel has borne enough anguish without you.
ਤੁਮਹਮਪੈਕੋਊਨਪਠਿਯੋਪੂਛਨਕੁਸਲਮਨੁਖ੍ਯ॥੧੮॥
ਪਰ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਮੇਰੀ ਸੁਖ ਸਾਂਦ ਪੁਛਣ ਲਈ ਕੋਈ ਬੰਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਭੇਜਿਆ ॥੧੮॥
‘Moreover, neither you sent any body to inquire my welfare.’(l8)

ਪ੍ਰਾਨਾਕੁਲਹਮਕੂਕਸੁਨਾਯੋ॥
ਤਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਾਣਾਂ ਲਈ ਵਿਆਕੁਲ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਕੁਰਲਾਈ
‘When the woman in me was very much aggrieved, she became irritated and pronounced,
ਜੋਯਾਦੁਖਤੇਬੈਦਉਸਾਰੈ॥
ਕਿ ਜੋ ਬੈਦ (ਵਿਅਕਤੀ) ਮੈਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਦੁਖ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਾਏਗਾ,

‘One milkman planned and rescued me.
ਅਬਮੋਸੌਐਸੇਕਹਤਹੋਹਿਹਮਾਰੀਨਾਰਿ॥੨੦॥
ਹੁਣ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਇੰਜ ਕਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਮੇਰੀ ਪਤਨੀ ਬਣ ਜਾ ॥੨੦॥
‘And now he says, “You are my woman.” ‘(20)

ਮੋਕਰਤੇਬਤਿਯਾਅਬਰਹੀ॥
ਕਿ ਹੁਣ ਮੇਰੇ ਗੱਲ ਮੇਰੇ ਹੱਥ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹੀ।
‘Painfully, I am telling you that the matter is not in my hands.
ਕਹੁਰਾਜਾਮੋਕਹਕਾਕਰਿਯੈ॥
ਹੇ ਰਾਜਨ! ਮੈਨੂੰ ਦਸੋ ਕਿ ਕੀ ਕਰਾਂ।
ਤੋਸੌਛਾਡਿਰੰਕਕਹਬਰਿਯੈ॥੨੧॥
ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਵਰਗੇ ਨੂੰ ਛਡ ਕੇ ਇਸ ਕੰਗਲੇ ਨੂੰ ਵਰ ਲਵਾਂ ॥੨੧॥
‘Tell me, my Raja what should I do. Should I adopt that penniless and get rid of you.’ (21)

After listening to this, the raja called the milkman,
ਤੁਰਤਬਾਧਿਤਾਕੋਦਿਯਾਸਰਿਤਾਬਿਖੈਬਹਾਇ॥੨੨॥
ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਬੰਨ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਨਦੀ ਵਿਚ ਰੁੜ੍ਹਵਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ॥੨੨॥
And, immediately, tying him up, threw him m the river.(22)
ਪ੍ਰਾਨਉਬਾਰਿਯੋਸੁਖਦੀਆਜਮਤੇਲੀਆਬਚਾਇ॥
(ਗੁਜਰ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਦੇ) ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਬਚਾਏ, ਸੁਖ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਯਮਰਾਜ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਾ ਲਿਆ।
‘The milkman who had saved her from the clutches of the death,
ਨ੍ਰਿਪਹਿਤਤੇਮਾਰਿਯੋਤਿਸੈਐਸੋਚਰਿਤ੍ਰਦਿਖਾਇ॥੨੩॥
ਪਰ ਰਾਜੇ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਲਈ (ਉਸ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਨੇ) ਅਜਿਹਾ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਵਿਖਾ ਕੇ ਉਸ (ਗੁਜਰ) ਨੂੰ ਮਰਵਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ॥੨੩॥
By enacting a play before the Raja, she got him killed.(23)(1)

ਹਮਤੇਸਕਲਕੁਕ੍ਰਿਯਾਰਹੀ॥
ਕਿ ਮੇਰੇ ਤੋਂ ਸਾਰੀ ਮਾੜੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਆ (ਕਰਮ) ਕਰਨੋ ਰਹਿ ਗਈ ਹੈ (ਅਰਥਾਤ ਛਡ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੈ)।

‘Whatever you tell me, it is like putting nectar into my ears.’(1)

ਹੇ ਮਨ, ਬਚਨ ਅਤੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਚੰਗੇ ਵਜ਼ੀਰ! ਮੇਰੀ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਇਹੀ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਹੈ
‘Concentrating on your mind, body and soul, Oh My Minister, I request you,
ਜੋਕਛੁਚਰਿਤਇਸਤ੍ਰਿਨਕਰੇਸੁਕਛੁਕਹੋਸਭਮੋਹਿ॥੨॥
ਕਿ ਜਿਹੜੇ ਕੁਝ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਇਸਤਰੀਆਂ ਕਰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਸਾਰੇ ਦਸ ਦਿਓ ॥੨॥
‘What ever number of Auspicious Chritars you know, relate them to me.’(2)
ਏਕਰਾਵਕਾਨੋਹੁਤੋਤਾਹਿਕੁਕ੍ਰਿਯਾਨਾਰ॥
(ਮੰਤ੍ਰੀ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ-) ਇਕ ਕਾਣਾ ਰਾਜਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਮਾੜੇ ਆਚਰਨ ਵਾਲੀ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਸੀ।
There was one-eyed Raja whose woman was a pervert.
ਰਮੀਜਾਰਸੌਰਾਇਕੀਆਖਅੰਬੀਰਹਡਾਰਿ॥੩॥
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਰਾਜੇ ਦੀਆਂ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਗੁਲਾਲ ਪਾ ਕੇ ਯਾਰ ਨਾਲ ਰਮਣ ਕੀਤਾ ਸੀ ॥੩॥
(This is) how she enjoyed with her friend after putting coloured powder in the eyes of the Raja.(3)

ਜਬਹੀਮਾਸਫਾਗੁਕੋਆਯੋ॥
ਜਦੋਂ ਫਗਣ ਦਾ ਮਹੀਨਾ ਆਇਆ
ਨਰਨਾਰਿਨਆਨੰਦਬਢਾਯੋ॥
ਤਾਂ ਮਰਦਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਔਰਤਾਂ ਨੇ (ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ) ਆਨੰਦ ਵਧਾਇਆ।
‘With the approach of the spring, bloomed the hearts of the males and females.
ਘਰਘਰਹੋਤਕੁਲਾਹਲਭਾਰੀ॥
ਘਰ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਖ਼ੂਬ ਰੌਲਾ ਪੈਣ ਲਗਾ

ਗਾਵਤਗੀਤਬਜਾਵਤਤਾਰੀ॥੪॥
ਅਤੇ (ਲੋਕੀਂ) ਤਾੜੀਆਂ ਵਜਾ ਕੇ ਗੀਤ ਗਾਉਣ ਲਗੇ ॥੪॥

ਉਸ ਨੇ ਇਕ ਰੂਪਵਾਨ ਨਟ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖਿਆ।

ਮਦਨਤਬੈਤਨਬਿਸਿਖਪ੍ਰਹਾਰਿਯੋ॥
ਤਦੋਂ ਕਾਮ ਦੇਵ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਬਾਣ ਮਾਰਿਆ।
When she saw a handsome acrobat, she felt as if she was shot by the Cupid arrow.
ਮਨਕ੍ਰਮਬਚਕਰਿਕੈਬਸਿਭਈ॥
(ਉਹ) ਮਨ, ਬਚਨ ਅਤੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਉਸ ਦੇ) ਵਸ ਵਿਚ ਹੋ ਗਈ,

ਘਰ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਫਾਗ (ਹੋਲੀ) ਖੇਡੀ ਜਾ ਰਹੀ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਘਰ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਗੀਤ ਗਾਏ ਜਾ ਰਹੇ ਸਨ।
The songs were recited in every home .
ਘਰਘਰਹੋਤਮ੍ਰਿਦੰਗਧੁਨਘਰਘਰਨਚਤਸੰਗੀਤ॥੭॥
ਘਰ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਮ੍ਰਿਦੰਗ ਦੀ ਧੁਨ ਹੋ ਰਹੀ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਘਰ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਸੰਗੀਤ ਉਤੇ ਨਾਚ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ ॥੭॥
Every home had dances the beats of the drums.(7)
ਤਿਹਠਾਏਕਪ੍ਰਬੀਨਨਟਸਭਨਟੂਅਨਕੋਰਾਇ॥
ਉਥੇ ਇਕ ਪ੍ਰਬੀਨ ਨਟ ਵੀ ਸੀ ਜੋ ਸਭ ਨਟਾਂ ਦਾ ਰਾਜਾ ਸੀ (ਭਾਵ ਸ਼ਿਰੋਮਣੀ ਸੀ)।
There came the acrobat, who seemed to be the Raja of all the acrobats,
ਮਦਨਛਪਾਏਕਾਢੀਐਮਦਨਕਿਨਵਰੰਗਰਾਇ॥੮॥
ਮਦਨ ਨੂੰ ਲੁਕਾਓ (ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ) ਕਢ ਲਵੋ (ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਾਨੋ ਕਾਮ ਦੇਵ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਸਰੂਪ ਸੀ)। (ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਂ) ਨਵਰੰਗ ਰਾਇ ਸੀ ॥੮॥
And he, whose name was Navrang, was epitome of the Cupid.(8)

ਗਾਵਤਗੀਤਸਭੈਨਰਨਾਰੀ॥
ਸਾਰੇ ਨਰ ਨਾਰੀਆਂ ਗੀਤ ਗਾ ਰਹੇ ਸਨ।
Holy, the festival of colours was at full swing in the town, and every man and woman danced and sang.
ਨਵਲਾਸਿਨਹਾਥਨਲਹਕਾਵੈ॥
(ਨੌਜਵਾਨ ਇਸਤਰੀਆਂ ਦੇ) ਹੱਥਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਫੁਲਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਛਟੀਆਂ ਲਟਕ (ਜਾਂ ਚਮਕ) ਰਹੀਆਂ ਹਨ
Holy, the festival of colours was at full swing in the town, and every man and woman danced and sang.
ਚਤੁਰਨਕੇਚਤੁਰਾਤਨਲਾਵੈ॥੯॥
ਅਤੇ ਚਤੁਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਚਤੁਰ ਇਸਤਰੀਆਂ ਮਾਰ ਰਹੀਆਂ ਹਨ ॥੯॥
The old enjoyed with old and threw flowers on each other.(9)

ਘਰ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਹੋਲੀ ਦੇ ਗੀਤ ਗਾਏ ਜਾ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਘਰ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਮ੍ਰਿਦੰਗ ਵਜ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ।
In the company of drums-beats, songs of Holy were Sung in every house.
ਹਰਿਦਰਰਾਗਅਲਾਪਿਯਤਘਰਘਰਬਜਤਮੁਚੰਗ॥੧੦॥
ਹਰ ਘਰ ਦੇ ਦੁਆਰ ਉਤੇ ਰਾਗ ਅਲਾਪਿਆ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਘਰ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਮਧੁਰ ਆਵਾਜ਼ ਵਾਲੇ ਵਾਜੇ ਵਜ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ ॥੧੦॥
The harmonies were flowing at every door-step and music was report in all the households.(10)
ਘਰਘਰਅਬਲਾਗਾਵਹੀਮਿਲਿਮਿਲਿਗੀਤਬਚਿਤ੍ਰ॥
ਘਰ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਇਸਤਰੀਆਂ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਵਿਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਗੀਤ ਗਾ ਰਹੀਆਂ ਹਨ।
The damsels were singing the songs in unison and enacting plays,
ਮੁਰਲੀਮੁਰਜਮ੍ਰਿਦੰਗਧੁਨਜਹਤਹਬਜਤਬਜਿਤ੍ਰ॥੧੧॥
ਮੁਰਲੀ, ਮੁਰਜ ਮ੍ਰਿਦੰਗ ਆਦਿ ਵਾਜਿਆਂ ('ਬਜਿਤ੍ਰ') ਦੀ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਧੁਨ ਜਿਥੇ ਕਿਥੇ ਹੋ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ ॥੧੧॥
The music flowing out of flutes, trumpets and bongos was prevailing all over.(11)

ਫੂਲਪਾਨਕੈਫਾਨਮੰਗਾਯੋ॥
ਅਤੇ ਫੁਲ (ਪੋਸਤ ਦੇ ਡੋਡੇ ਜਾਂ ਅਫੀਮ ਦਾ ਰਸ) ਪਾਨ ਅਤੇ ਸ਼ਰਾਬ ਮੰਗਵਾਈ ਹੈ।
The males and the females were sharing the amusements.
ਦੁਹੂੰਓਰਨਵਲਾਸਿਨਮਾਰੈ॥
ਦੋਹਾਂ ਪਾਸਿਆਂ ਤੋਂ (ਮੁਟਿਆਰਾਂ) ਛਟੀਆਂ ਮਾਰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ
ਮਧੁਰਮਧੁਰਧੁਨਿਗੀਤਉਚਾਰੈ॥੧੨॥
ਅਤੇ ਮਧੁਰ ਮਧੁਰ ਗੀਤਾਂ ਦਾ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਕਰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ ॥੧੨॥
From both sides colours were sprinkled under the efficacy of music.(12)

ਜਿਧਰ ਜਿਧਰ ਵੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਮਾਰੀਏ, ਉਧਰ ਉਧਰ ਹੀ ਪੀਲੇ ਰੰਗ ਦੇ ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਦਿਸਦੇ ਸਨ ॥੧੩॥
The saffron colour apparels were predominant.(13)
ਘਰਘਰਚਾਚਰਖੇਲੀਯਹਿਹਸਿਹਸਿਗੈਯਹਿਗੀਤ॥
ਘਰ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਹੋਲੀ ਖੇਡੀ ਜਾ ਰਹੀ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਹਸ ਹਸ ਕੇ ਗੀਤ ਗਾਏ ਜਾ ਰਹੇ ਸਨ।
Every household was busy in playing Holy and singing jovially,
ਘਰਘਰਹੋਤਮ੍ਰਿਦੰਗਧੁਨਿਘਰਘਰਨਚਤਸੰਗੀਤ॥੧੪॥
ਘਰ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਮ੍ਰਿਦੰਗ ਦੀ ਧੁਨ ਹੋ ਰਹੀ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਘਰ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਸੰਗੀਤ ਉਤੇ ਨਾਚ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ ॥੧੪॥
The voices of bongos accompanied by the dances were emanating from eachhouse.(l4 )
ਨਿਰਖਿਰੂਪਤਾਕੋਸਕਲਉਰਝਿਰਹਿਯੋਸੁਕੁਮਾਰ॥
ਉਸ (ਰਾਣੀ) ਦੇ ਰੂਪ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਨੌਜਵਾਨ ਉਲਝਿਆ ਪਿਆ ਸੀ।
That young man was entrapped by her looks,
ਰਾਨੀਹੂੰਚਟਪਟਅਟਕਨਟਸੋਕਿਯੋਪ੍ਯਾਰ॥੧੫॥
ਰਾਣੀ ਵੀ ਝਟਪਟ ਉਸ ਨਟ ਨਾਲ ਅਟਕ ਗਈ ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਕਰਨ ਲਗੀ ॥੧੫॥
And the Rani, as well, was immediately entangled in his love.(l5)
ਖੇਲਤਫਾਗੁਬਚਿਤ੍ਰਗਤਿਨਰਨਾਰੀਸੁਖਪਾਇ॥
ਵਿਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਸਰੂਪ ਵਾਲੀ ਹੋਲੀ ਨੂੰ ਖੇਡਦੇ ਹੋਇਆਂ ਨਰ ਨਾਰੀਆਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਸੁਖ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਰਹੀਆਂ ਸਨ।
Every man and woman was savouring the songs of spring,
