(ਇਹ) ਬੋਲ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ (ਉਹ) ਇਸਤਰੀ ਕ੍ਰੋਧਿਤ ਹੋ ਗਈ।
ਜਰਿਬਰਿਆਠਟੂਕਹ੍ਵੈਗਈ॥
ਸੜ ਬਲ ਕੇ ਅੱਠ ਟੁਕੜੇ ਹੋ ਗਈ।
Listening to all this, she flew into rage and thought,
ਅਬਹੀਚੋਰਿਚੋਰਿਕਹਿਉਠਿਹੌ॥
(ਕਹਿਣ ਲਗੀ, ਮੈਂ) ਹੁਣੇ ਚੋਰ ਚੋਰ ਕਹਿ ਕੇ ਰੌਲਾ ਪਾਂਦੀ ਹਾਂ
ਤੁਹਿਕੋਪਕਰਿਮਾਰਿਹੀਸੁਟਿਹੌ॥੫੫॥
ਅਤੇ (ਲੋਕੀਂ) ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਹੀ ਸੁਟਣਗੇ ॥੫੫॥
‘Now I should shout, “thief, thief” and people will come and kill
him.’(55)

ਹਸਿਖੇਲੋਸੁਖਸੋਰਮੋਕਹਾਕਰਤਹੋਰੋਖ॥
(ਤੁਸੀਂ) ਹਸਦੇ ਖੇਡਦੇ ਸੁਖ ਪੂਰਵਕ (ਮੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ) ਰਮਣ ਕਰੋ, ਕਿਉਂ (ਵਿਅਰਥ ਦਾ) ਰੋਸ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੋ।
(She) ‘Why are you getting so angry, jovially have sex with me.
ਨੈਨਰਹੇਨਿਹੁਰਾਇਕ੍ਯੋਹੇਰਤਲਗਤਨਦੋਖ॥੫੬॥
ਮੇਰੀਆਂ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਨੀਵੀਆਂ ਹੋ ਰਹੀਆਂ ਹਨ। ਕੀ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ (ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ) ਦੋਸ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਗਦਾ ॥੫੬॥
‘My eyes are inviting you, can’t you understand what they are revealing.’ (56)
ਯਾਤੇਹਮਹੇਰਤਨਹੀਸੁਨਿਸਿਖਹਮਾਰੇਬੈਨ॥
(ਰਾਜੇ ਨੇ ਉੱਤਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ) ਇਸੇ ਲਈ ਤਾਂ ਮੈਂ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ। (ਤੂੰ) ਸਿਖਿਆ ਭਰੇ (ਮੇਰੇ) ਬਚਨ ਸੁਣ।
(Raja) ‘Listen, Carefully Listen, I am not looking at you,
ਲਖੇਲਗਨਲਗਿਜਾਇਜਿਨਬਡੇਬਿਰਹਿਯਾਨੈਨ॥੫੭॥
ਕਿਤੇ ਵਿਯੋਗੇ ਹੋਏ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੈਣਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖਣ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਲਗਨ ਨਾ ਲਗ ਜਾਏ ॥੫੭॥
‘Because the looks create the feeling of separation.’(57)

ਦਿਜਨਦੀਜਿਯਹੁਦਾਨਦ੍ਰੁਜਨਕਹਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿਦਿਖੈਯਹੁ॥
ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦਾਨ ਦਿਓ ਅਤੇ ਦੁਸ਼ਟਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਘੂਰ ਕੇ ਰਖੋ।
‘Charity is endowed to the priests and the men with base thinking get scornful looks.
ਸੁਖੀਰਾਖਿਯਹੁਸਾਥਸਤ੍ਰੁਸਿਰਖੜਗਬਜੈਯਹੁ॥
ਸਾਥੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਖੀ ਰਖੋ ਅਤੇ ਵੈਰੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ (ਸਦਾ) ਤਲਵਾਰ ਵਜਾਉਂਦੇ ਰਹੋ।
‘Friends are entrained with relief and the enemies get hit on the heads with sword.
ਲੋਕਲਾਜਕਉਛਾਡਿਕਛੂਕਾਰਜਨਹਿਕਰਿਯਹੁ॥
ਲੋਕ ਲਾਜ ਨੂੰ ਛਡ ਕੇ ਕੋਈ ਕੰਮ ਨਾ ਕਰੋ।
‘No act is performed keeping in view the public opinion.
ਪਰਨਾਰੀਕੀਸੇਜਪਾਵਸੁਪਨੇਹੂੰਨਧਰਿਯਹੁ॥
ਪਰ ਨਾਰੀ ਦੀ ਸੇਜ ਉਤੇ ਸੁਪਨੇ ਵਿਚ ਵੀ ਪੈਰ ਨਾ ਰਖੋ।
‘One should not even dream of getting into bed with else’s wife.
ਗੁਰਜਬਤੇਮੁਹਿਕਹਿਯੋਇਹੈਪ੍ਰਨਲਯੋਸੁਧਾਰੈ॥
ਜਦੋਂ ਦਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕਿਹਾ ਹੈ, (ਉਦੋਂ ਤੋਂ ਮੈਂ) ਇਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਣ ਧਾਰਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ
‘Since the time Guru has taught me this lesson,
ਹੋਪਰਧਨਪਾਹਨਤੁਲਿਤ੍ਰਿਯਾਪਰਮਾਤਹਮਾਰੈ॥੫੮॥
ਕਿ ਮੇਰੇ ਲਈ ਪਰਾਇਆ ਧਨ ਪੱਥਰ ਦੇ ਸਮਾਨ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਪਰਾਈ ਔਰਤ ਮਾਤਾ ਵਰਗੀ ਹੈ ॥੫੮॥
Any thing belonging to somebody else is like a stone and else’s wife like a mother to me.’(58)

ਸੁਨਤਰਾਵਕੋਬਚਸ੍ਰਵਨਤ੍ਰਿਯਮਨਿਅਧਿਕਰਿਸਾਇ॥
ਰਾਜੇ ਦੇ ਬਚਨ ਕੰਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਨੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਬਹੁਤ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਕੀਤਾ
Listening to the Raja’s talk she became angrier,
ਚੋਰਚੋਰਕਹਿਕੈਉਠੀਸਿਖ੍ਯਨਦਿਯੋਜਗਾਇ॥੫੯॥
ਅਤੇ ਚੋਰ ਚੋਰ ਕਹਿ ਕੇ (ਆਪਣੇ) ਸੇਵਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਜਗਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ॥੫੯॥
And shouting, “thief, thief” she awoke all her companions.(59)
ਸੁਨਤਚੋਰਕੋਬਚਸ੍ਰਵਨਅਧਿਕਡਰਿਯੋਨਰਨਾਹਿ॥
ਕੰਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਚੋਰ-ਚੋਰ ਦੇ ਬਚਨ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਰਾਜਾ ਬਹੁਤ ਡਰ ਗਿਆ
Hearing the call of “thief, thief,” the Raja was frightened.
ਪਨੀਪਾਮਰੀਤਜਿਭਜ੍ਯੋਸੁਧਿਨਰਹੀਮਨਮਾਹਿ॥੬੦॥
ਅਤੇ ਡੌਰ ਭੌਰ ਹੋਇਆ ਜੁਤੀ ਤੇ ਪਾਮਰੀ (ਸਰਦੀਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਪਾਣ ਦਾ ਇਕ ਵੱਡਾ ਚੋਲਾ) ਛਡ ਕੇ ਭਜ ਗਿਆ ॥੬੦॥
He lost his sanity and, leaving there his shoes and silk robe, ran away.(60)

'ਚੋਰ ਚੋਰ' ਦੇ ਬੋਲ ਕੰਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਰਾਜਾ ਡਰ ਕੇ ਉਠਿਆ
When the Raja heard the call, “thief, thief” he became dreadful.
ਭਜਿਯੋਜਾਇਡਰਪਾਇਮਨਪਨੀਪਾਮਰੀਡਾਰਿ॥੧॥
ਅਤੇ ਜੁਤੀ ਤੇ ਪਾਮਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਛਡ ਕੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਡਰਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਭਜ ਗਿਆ ॥੧॥
He ran out leaving behind his shoes and silk robe.(1)
ਚੋਰਿਸੁਨਤਜਾਗੇਸਭੈਭਜੈਨਦੀਨਾਰਾਇ॥
'ਚੋਰ ਚੋਰ' (ਦੀ ਆਵਾਜ਼) ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਸਾਰੇ (ਸੇਵਕ) ਜਾਗ ਪਏ ਅਤੇ (ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ) ਰਾਜੇ ਨੂੰ ਭਜਣ ਨਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ
Hearing the call of thief, all woke up and did not let the Raja runaway,
ਕਦਮਪਾਚਸਾਤਕਲਗੇਮਿਲੇਸਿਤਾਬੀਆਇ॥੨॥
ਅਤੇ ਪੰਜ ਸਤ ਕਦਮਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਜਲਦੀ ਹੀ ਆ ਮਿਲੇ ॥੨॥
And within five or seven feet they caught him.(2)
ਚੌਪਈ॥

ਚੋਰਬਚਨਸਭਹੀਸੁਨਿਧਾਏ॥
'ਚੋਰ ਚੋਰ' ਦੇ ਬੋਲ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਭਜ ਪਏ
ਕਾਢੇਖੜਗਰਾਇਪ੍ਰਤਿਆਏ॥
ਅਤੇ ਤਲਵਾਰਾਂ ਕਢ ਕੇ ਰਾਜੇ ਪ੍ਰਤਿ ਵਧੇ।
Others too heard the call of “thief” and came out with their swords.
ਕੂਕਿਕਹੈਤੁਹਿਜਾਨਨਦੈਹੈ॥
ਲਲਕਾਰ ਕੇ ਕਹਿਣ ਲਗੇ ਕਿ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਜਾਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੇਵਾਂਗੇ
ਤੁਹਿਤਸਕਰਜਮਧਾਮਪਠੈਹੈ॥੩॥
ਅਤੇ ਹੇ ਚੋਰ! ਤੈਨੂੰ ਯਮਲੋਕ ਭੇਜਾਂਗੇ ॥੩॥
People shouted at him and expressed that he should be sent to the hell.(3)

ਆਗੇਪਾਛੇਦਾਹਨੇਘੇਰਿਦਸੋਦਿਸਲੀਨ॥
(ਰਾਜੇ ਨੂੰ) ਅਗੇ, ਪਿਛੇ, ਸਜੇ ਆਦਿ ਦਸਾਂ ਪਾਸਿਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਘੇਰ ਲਿਆ।
He was rounded up from left, right and all the directions.
ਪੈਂਡਭਜਨਕੌਨਰਹਿਯੋਰਾਇਜਤਨਯੌਕੀਨ॥੪॥
ਰਾਜੇ ਨੂੰ (ਜਦ) ਭਜਣ ਲਈ ਕੋਈ ਰਸਤਾ ਨਾ ਰਿਹਾ (ਤਦ) ਰਾਜੇ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਯਤਨ ਕੀਤਾ ॥੪॥
Raja did try but he could not find any means (to escape).(4)
ਵਾਕੀਕਰਦਾਰੀਧਰੀਪਗਿਯਾਲਈਉਤਾਰਿ॥
ਉਸ (ਦੇ ਭਰਾ) ਦੀ ਦਾੜ੍ਹੀ ਫੜ ਲਈ ਅਤੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੋਂ ਪਗੜੀ ਲਾਹ ਲਈ।
People pulled his beard and took his turban off
ਚੋਰਚੋਰਕਰਿਤਿਹਗਹਿਯੋਦ੍ਵੈਕਮੁਤਹਰੀਝਾਰਿ॥੫॥
ਚੋਰ-ਚੋਰ ਕਹਿ ਕੇ ਅਤੇ ਦੋ ਕੁ ਸੋਟੇ ਮਾਰ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਕੜ ਲਿਆ ॥੫॥
Calling him “thief, thief” they beat him with sticks.(5)
ਲਗੇਮੁਹਤਰੀਕੇਗਿਰਿਯੋਭੂਮਿਮੂਰਛਨਾਖਾਇ॥
ਸੋਟੇ ਵਜਣ ਨਾਲ (ਉਹ) ਬੇਹੋਸ਼ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਧਰਤੀ ਉਤੇ ਡਿਗ ਪਿਆ।
With the beating of sticks, he fell flat and became unconscious.
ਭੇਦਨਕਾਹੂੰਨਰਲਹਿਯੋਮੁਸਕੈਲਈਚੜਾਇ॥੬॥
ਕਿਸੇ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਨੇ ਵੀ ਭੇਦ ਨਾ ਸਮਝਿਆ ਅਤੇ (ਉਸ ਦੀਆਂ) ਮੁਸ਼ਕਾਂ ਕਸ ਦਿੱਤੀਆਂ ॥੬॥
People without understanding the real issue, tied him up with a rope.(6)
ਲਾਤਮੁਸਟਬਾਜਨਲਗੀਸਿਖ੍ਯਪਹੁੰਚੇਆਇ॥
ਲੱਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਮੁੱਕੇ ਵਜਣ ਲਗੇ ਅਤੇ (ਇੰਨੇ ਤਕ ਹੋਰ) ਸੇਵਕ ਵੀ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਗਏ।
They were throwing punches and kicks when the Sikhs arrived, too.
ਭ੍ਰਾਤਭ੍ਰਾਤਤ੍ਰਿਯਕਹਿਰਹੀਕੋਊਨਸਕਿਯੋਛੁਰਾਇ॥੭॥
(ਉਹ) ਇਸਤਰੀ ਭਰਾ ਭਰਾ ਕਹਿ ਥਕੀ, ਪਰ ਕੋਈ ਵੀ (ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸੇਵਕਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਛੁਡਾ ਨਾ ਸਕਿਆ ॥੭॥
The woman shouted, “brother, brother,” but could not rescue him.(7)
ਚੌਪਈ॥

ਜੂਤੀਬਹੁਤਿਹਮੂੰਡਲਗਾਈ॥
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਜੁਤੀਆਂ ਮਾਰੀਆਂ
ਮੁਸਕੈਤਾਕੀਐਠਚੜਾਈ॥
ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੀਆਂ ਮੁਸ਼ਕਾਂ ਕਸ ਦਿੱਤੀਆਂ।
His face was hit with shoes and hands were tied tightly.
ਬੰਦਸਾਲਤਿਹਦਿਯਾਪਠਾਈ॥
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਬੰਦੀਖਾਨੇ ਭੇਜ ਦਿੱਤਾ
ਆਨਿਆਪਨੀਸੇਜਸੁਹਾਈ॥੮॥
ਅਤੇ (ਇਸਤਰੀ) ਆਪਣੀ ਸੇਜ ਉਪਰ ਆ ਗਈ ॥੮॥
He was put in the jail, and the woman came back to her bed.(8)
ਇਹਛਲਖੇਲਿਰਾਇਭਜਆਯੋ॥
ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਛਲ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਰਾਜਾ (ਉਥੋਂ) ਭਜ ਆਇਆ।

ਬੰਦਸਾਲਤ੍ਰਿਯਭ੍ਰਾਤਪਠਾਯੋ॥
ਬੰਦੀਖਾਨੇ ਵਿਚ ਉਸ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਦਾ ਭਰਾ ਭੇਜ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ।
Through such a deception, the Raja went free and despatched her brother to the prison.
