ਦੇਵਅਦੇਵਤ੍ਰਿਯਾਨਕੇਭੇਵਪਛਾਨਤਨਾਹਿ॥੧੩॥
ਦੇਵਤੇ ਅਤੇ ਦੈਂਤ, ਕੋਈ ਵੀ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਦੇ ਭੇਦ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਿਆ, ਫਿਰ ਆਦਮੀ ਵਿਚਾਰਾ ਕੀ ਹੈ ॥੧੩॥
Then what the poor human creatures could achieve.(13)(l)

ਬਹੁਰਿਮੰਤ੍ਰਿਬਰਰਾਇਸੌਭੇਦਕਹਿਯੋਸਮਝਾਇ॥
ਫਿਰ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੀ ਨੇ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਠ ਰਾਜੇ ਨੂੰ ਭੇਦ ਸਮਝਾਇਆ।
ਸਭਾਬਿਖੈਭਾਖਤਭਯੋਦਸਮੀਕਥਾਸੁਨਾਇ॥੧॥
(ਅਤੇ) ਸਭਾ ਵਿਚ ਦਸਵੀਂ ਕਥਾ ਬਣਾ ਕੇ ਸੁਣਾਈ ॥੧॥
Then the Minister inculcated and narrated this tenth Chritar.(1)
ਬਨਿਯਾਏਕਪਿਸੌਰਮੈਤਾਹਿਕੁਕ੍ਰਿਆਨਾਰਿ॥
ਪਿਸ਼ੌਰ ਵਿਚ ਇਕ ਬਨੀਆ ਸੀ ਜਿਸ ਦੀ (ਇਕ) ਬਦਚਲਨ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਸੀ।
A shopkeeper used to live in the city of Peshawar, whose wife was overrun by bad characters.
ਤਾਹਿਮਾਰਿਤਾਸੌਜਰੀਸੋਮੈਕਹੋਸੁਧਾਰਿ॥੨॥
ਉਹ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਸੜ ਮੋਈ। ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਮੈਂ ਸੰਵਾਰ ਕੇ ਕਹਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ॥੨॥
She had killed the shopkeeper and immolated herself with his dead body. Now I am going to recite their tale:(2)
ਬਨਿਕਬਨਿਜਕੇਹਿਤਗਯੋਤਾਤੇਰਹਿਯੋਨਜਾਇ॥
ਬਨੀਆ ਵਪਾਰ ਲਈ (ਬਾਹਰ) ਗਿਆ (ਪਰ ਪਿਛੋਂ) ਉਸ (ਇਸਤਰੀ) ਤੋਂ (ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ) ਸੰਭਾਲਿਆ ਨਾ ਗਿਆ।
The shopkeeper went away on a business trip.
ਏਕਪੁਰਖਰਾਖਤਭਈਅਪੁਨੇਧਾਮਬੁਲਾਇ॥੩॥
ਆਪਣੇ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਇਕ ਪੁਰਸ਼ ਬੁਲਾ ਕੇ ਰਖ ਲਿਆ ॥੩॥
In his absence she could not control her passion and invited a person to live with her in the house.(3)
ਰੈਨਿਦਿਵਸਤਾਸੌਰਮੈਜਬਸੁਤਭੂਖੋਹੋਇ॥
(ਉਹ) ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਰਮਣ ਕਰਦੀ ਸੀ। ਜਦ (ਉਸ ਦਾ) ਪੁੱਤਰ ਭੁਖਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ,
Whenever hungry, her baby cried for milk, but, day in or day out,
ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮਾਤਲਖਿਦੁਗਧਹਿਤਦੇਤਉਚਸੁਰਰੋਇ॥੪॥
ਤਾਂ ਮਾਤਾ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਦੁੱਧ ਲਈ ਉੱਚੀ ਆਵਾਜ਼ ਵਿਚ ਰੋਂਦਾ ॥੪॥
She kept herself busy in love-makmg.( 4)

ਜਬਸੁਤਭੂਖੋਹੋਇਪੁਕਾਰੈ॥
ਜਦ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਭੁਖਾ ਹੋ ਕੇ (ਮਾਤਾ ਨੂੰ) ਪੁਕਾਰਦਾ
ਤਬਮੁਖਸੌਯੌਜਾਰਉਚਾਰੈ॥
ਤਦ (ਆਪਣੇ) ਮੁਖ ਤੋਂ ਯਾਰ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਹਿੰਦਾ।
Once when the baby cried hard seeking feed, her lover asked her,
ਤ੍ਰਿਯਯਾਕੋਤੁਮਚੁਪਨਕਰਾਵੋ॥
ਹੇ ਇਸਤਰੀ! ਤੂੰ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਚੁਪ ਕਰਾ
ਹਮਰੇਚਿਤਕੋਸੋਕਮਿਟਾਵੋ॥੫॥
ਅਤੇ (ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਦਾ ਦੁਖ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ॥੫॥
‘Go, silence the child and, then, eliminate my sensual agonies.’(5)
ਉਠਿਅਸਥਨਤਾਕੋਤਿਨਦਯੋ॥
(ਉਸ ਨੇ) ਉਠ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਥਣ ਚੁੰਘਾਇਆ।
ਲੈਅਸਥਨਚੁਪਬਾਲਨਭਯੋ॥
ਥਣ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਵੀ ਬੱਚਾ ਚੁਪ ਨਾ ਹੋਇਆ।
The lady went and tried to breast feed him but child would not get quiet.
ਨਿਜਸੁਤਕੋਨਿਜੁਕਰਨਸੰਘਾਰਿਯੋ॥
ਆਪਣੇ ਹੱਥਾਂ ਨਾਲ (ਉਸ ਨੇ) ਆਪਣੇ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ
ਆਨਿਮਿਤ੍ਰਕੋਸੋਕਨਿਵਾਰਿਯੋ॥੬॥
(ਅਤੇ) ਆ ਕੇ ਮਿਤਰ ਦਾ ਦੁਖ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ॥੬॥
(To quieten him), she suffocated the baby with her own hands and, then, took the man out of his erotic miseries.(6)
ਬਾਲਰਹਤਚੁਪਜਾਰਉਚਾਰੋ॥
ਬਾਲਕ ਦੇ ਚੁਪ ਰਹਿਣ ਤੇ ਯਾਰ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ,
ਅਬਕ੍ਯੋਨਰੋਵਤਬਾਲਤਿਹਾਰੋ॥
ਹੁਣ ਤੇਰਾ ਬਾਲਕ ਕਿਉਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਰੋਂਦਾ।
Noticing the baby’s sudden stoppage of weeping, the man asked,
ਤਬਤਿਨਬਚਨਤਰੁਨਿਯੌਭਾਖਿਯੋ॥
ਤਦ ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਤਿ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਬਚਨ ਕੀਤਾ।
‘Why your child is not crying now.’
ਤਵਹਿਤਮਾਰਿਪੂਤਮੈਰਾਖਿਯੋ॥੭॥
ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਲਈ (ਆਪਣੇ) ਪੁੱਤਰ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ॥੭॥
She disclosed, ‘For the sake of your pleasure I have killed my son.’(7)
ਦੋਹਰਾ॥

ਜਾਰਬਚਨਸੁਨਿਕੈਡਰਿਯੋਅਧਿਕਤ੍ਰਾਸਮਨਠਾਨਿ॥
ਯਾਰ (ਇਸਤਰੀ ਦਾ) ਬਚਨ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਡਰ ਕੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਭੈਭੀਤ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ।
Learning the fact, he was much scared and rebuked her for doing
ਤਾਤ੍ਰਿਯਕੀਨਿੰਦ੍ਯਾਕਰੀਬਾਲਚਰਿਤਮੁਖਿਆਨਿ॥੮॥
(ਅਤੇ) ਉਸ ਨੇ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਦੇ ਬਾਲਕ ਨਾਲ ਕੀਤੇ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਦੀ ਮੂੰਹ ਤੋਂ ਨਿੰਦਿਆ ਕੀਤੀ ॥੮॥
Thus to the baby.(8)
ਜਾਰਜਬੈਐਸੇਕ੍ਯੋਨਿਰਖਤਰੁਨਿਕੀਓਰ॥
ਜਦ ਯਾਰ ਨੇ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਵਲ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ,
When he reproved her action severely, she took out a sword and
ਤਾਹਿਤੁਰਤਮਾਰਤਭਈਹ੍ਰਿਦੈਕਟਾਰੀਘੋਰ॥੯॥
(ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਨੇ) ਭਿਆਨਕ ਕਟਾਰ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਖਭੋ ਕੇ ਮਾਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ॥੯॥
Immediately cut his head off.(9)
ਪੁਤ੍ਰਔਰਤਿਹਜਾਰਕੋਇਕਕੋਨਾਮੈਜਾਇ॥
ਪੁੱਤਰ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਯਾਰ ਨੂੰ (ਘਰ ਦੇ) ਇਕ ਕੋਨੇ ਵਿਚ ਲੈ ਗਈ
With the help of another person she dug out a hole in the corner and
ਮਰਦਏਕਲਗਿਭੂਮਿਖਨਿਦੁਹੂੰਅਨਦਯੋਦਬਾਇ॥੧੦॥
ਅਤੇ ਇਕ ਮਰਦ ਜਿੰਨੀ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਧਰਤੀ ਪੁਟ ਕੇ ਦੋਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਉਸ ਵਿਚ) ਦਬਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ॥੧੦॥
Buried them both in it.(10)
ਅਤਿਥਏਕਤਿਹਘਰਹੁਤੋਤਿਨਸਭਚਰਿਤਨਿਹਾਰਿ॥
ਉਸ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਇਕ ਅਤਿਥ (ਸਾਧੂ) ਵੀ ਸੀ, ਉਸ ਨੇ (ਇਹ) ਸਾਰਾ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਵੇਖਿਆ ਸੀ।
(Incidentally,) a mendicant was there at the time, who had watched the entire episode.
ਬਨਿਕਮਿਤ੍ਰਤਾਕੋਹੁਤੋਤਾਸੋਕਹਿਯੋਸੁਧਾਰਿ॥੧੧॥
ਬਨੀਆ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਿਤਰ ਸੀ, (ਇਸ ਲਈ) ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਹਿ ਦਿੱਤਾ ॥੧੧॥
He went and narrated the whole story to his friend, the shopkeeper.(11)

ਬਚਨਸੁਨਤਬਨਿਯੋਘਰਆਯੋ॥
(ਅਤਿਥ ਦੇ) ਬਚਨ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਬਨੀਆ ਘਰ ਆਇਆ।
ਤਾਤ੍ਰਿਯਸੋਯੌਬਚਨਸੁਨਾਯੋ॥
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ,
Learning the fact, the shopkeeper came home and asked his wife thus,
ਜੋਗ੍ਰਿਹਕੋਨਾਖੋਦਿਦਿਖੈਹੈ॥
ਜੇ (ਤੂੰ) ਘਰ ਦਾ ਕੋਨਾ ਪੁਟ ਕੇ ਵਿਖਾ,
ਤਬਤੋਕੌਪਤਿਧਾਮਬਸੈਹੈ॥੧੨॥
ਤਦ ਹੀ ਤੇਰਾ ਪਤੀ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਵਸੇਗਾ ॥੧੨॥
‘Dig that corner and show me, otherwise I will not live in this house.’(l2)
ਅੜਿਲ॥

ਜਬਤਾਤ੍ਰਿਯਾਸੋਬਨਿਕਬਚਨਯੌਭਾਖਿਯੋ॥
ਜਦ ਉਸ ਬਨੀਏ ਨੇ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਬਚਨ ਕਿਹਾ,
When the man said thus to the woman, she flew into a rage,
ਤਮਕਿਤੇਗਕੀਦਈਮਾਰਿਹੀਰਾਖਿਯੋ॥
(ਤਾਂ) ਕ੍ਰੋਧਿਤ ਹੋ ਕੇ (ਉਸ ਨੂੰ) ਤਲਵਾਰ ਨਾਲ ਮਾਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ।
Took out the sword and killed him too.
ਕਾਟਿਮੂੰਡਤਾਕੋਇਹਭਾਤਿਉਚਾਰਿਯੋ॥
ਉਸ ਦਾ ਸਿਰ ਕਟ ਕੇ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ,
Decapitating him she started crying aloud,
ਹੋਲੂਟਿਚੋਰਲੈਗਏਧਾਮਇਹਮਾਰਿਯੋ॥੧੩॥
(ਕਿ) ਚੋਰ ਘਰ ਨੂੰ ਲੁਟ ਕੇ ਲੈ ਗਏ ਹਨ (ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ) ਮਾਰ ਗਏ ਹਨ ॥੧੩॥
‘The thieves raided the house and killed my husband.’(13)

ਪਤਿਮਾਰਿਯੋਸੁਤਮਾਰਿਯੋਧਨਲੈਗਏਚੁਰਾਇ॥
(ਚੋਰਾਂ ਨੇ ਮੇਰਾ) ਪਤੀ ਮਾਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ, ਪੁੱਤਰ ਮਾਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਧਨ ਚੁਰਾ ਕੇ ਲੈ ਗਏ।
‘They killed my husband they killed my son and took all our wealth.
ਤਾਪਾਛੈਮੈਹੂੰਜਰੌਢੋਲਮ੍ਰਿਦੰਗਬਜਾਇ॥੧੪॥
ਮੈਂ ਵੀ ਢੋਲ ਅਤੇ ਮ੍ਰਿਦੰਗ ਵਜਾ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਪਿਛੇ ਸੜਾਂਗੀ (ਅਰਥਾਤ ਸਤੀ ਹੋਵਾਂਗੀ) ॥੧੪॥
‘Now, with the beat of the drum I declare that I will become a Sati by immolating myself with him.’(14)
ਭਯੋਪ੍ਰਾਤਚੜਿਚਿਖਾਪੈਚਲੀਜਰਨਕੇਕਾਜ॥
ਸਵੇਰ ਹੁੰਦਿਆਂ ਹੀ (ਉਹ) ਚਿਖਾ ਉਤੇ ਚੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਸੜਨ ਲਈ ਤੁਰ ਪਈ।
Next morning she headed towards the funeral pyre and the people
ਲੋਗਤਮਾਸੇਕੌਚਲੇਲੈਲਕਰਿਨਕੋਸਾਜ॥੧੫॥
ਲੋਕੀਂ ਤਮਾਸ਼ਾ ਵੇਖਣ ਲਈ ਲਕੜੀਆਂ ਆਦਿ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਚਲ ਪਏ ॥੧੫॥
Followed, too, with firewood in their hands, to observe the spectacle.(15)
ਸੁਨਤਸੋਰਲੋਗਨਕੋਬਾਜਤਢੋਲਮ੍ਰਿਦੰਗ॥
ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ੋਰ ਅਤੇ ਢੋਲ ਮ੍ਰਿਦੰਗ ਦੇ ਵਜਣ (ਤੋਂ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਆਵਾਜ਼ ਨੂੰ) ਸੁਣ ਕੇ
Listening to the beats of the drums and observing the movement of
ਲਖ੍ਯੋਹੁਤੋਜੌਨੇਅਤਿਥਵਹੈਚਲਿਯੋਹੈਸੰਗ॥੧੬॥
ਉਹ ਅਤਿਥ ਵੀ ਨਾਲ ਚਲ ਪਿਆ (ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਘਟਨਾ) ਵੇਖੀ ਸੀ ॥੧੬॥
The people, that mendicant, who had seen all the happenings, came along too.(16)
