In the mean time the constables from the City Kotwal, the police station officer, walked in.
ਤੁਰਤੁਕੁਠਰਿਯਾਨਾਜਕੀਮੁਗਲਹਿਦਯੋਦੁਰਾਇ॥੮॥
(ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਨੇ) ਜਲਦੀ ਹੀ ਮੁਗ਼ਲ ਨੂੰ ਅਨਾਜ ਦੀ ਕੋਠੀ ਵਿਚ ਛੁਪਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ॥੮॥
She made the Mughal to run to the corn room.(8)
ਘੇਰਿਪਯਾਦਨਜਬਲਈਰਹਿਯੋਨਕਛੂਉਪਾਇ॥
ਜਦ (ਉਸ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਨੂੰ) ਪਿਆਦਿਆਂ ਨੇ ਘੇਰ ਲਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਕੋਈ ਉਪਾ ਬਾਕੀ ਨਾ ਰਿਹਾ।
The constables surrounded the house from all sides and seeing no escape she put the house to fire,
ਨਿਕਸਿਆਪੁਠਾਢੀਭਈਗ੍ਰਿਹਕੌਆਗਿਲਗਾਇ॥੯॥
(ਤਾਂ ਉਹ) ਘਰ ਨੂੰ ਅੱਗ ਲਗਾ ਕੇ ਆਪ ਬਾਹਰ ਆ ਖੜੋਤੀ ॥੯॥
And came outside the house and stood there.(9)
ਦੁਹੂੰਹਾਥਪੀਟਤਭਈਜਰਿਯੋਜਰਿਯੋਗ੍ਰਿਹਭਾਖਿ॥
'ਘਰ ਸੜ ਗਿਆ, ਘਰ ਸੜ ਗਿਆ' ਕਹਿ ਕੇ (ਉਹ) ਦੋਹਾਂ ਹੱਥਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਟਣ ਲਗੀ।
She started to lament aloud beating her breast, ‘My house is on fire, my house is burning.’
ਵੈਚਾਰੌਤਾਮੈਜਰੇਕਿਨਹੂੰਨਹੇਰੀਰਾਖਿ॥੧੦॥
ਉਸ (ਮਕਾਨ) ਵਿਚ ਚਾਰੇ ਸੜ ਕੇ ਮਰ ਗਏ ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਰਾਖ ਵੀ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੇ ਨਾ ਵੇਖੀ ॥੧੦॥
All the four were burned to death and no one even came across their ashes.(10)(1)

ਲਾਹੌਰ ਨਗਰ ਵਿਚ ਇਕ ਸ਼ਾਹ ਦੀ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਸੀ,
A trader’s wife used to live in the city of Lahore.
ਕਮਲਨਿਰਖਿਲੋਚਨਜਲਤਹੇਰਿਲਜਤਮੁਖਮਾਹ॥੧॥
(ਜਿਸ ਦੀਆਂ) ਅੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਕਮਲ ਫੁਲ ਸੜਦਾ (ਖਿਝਦਾ) ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਮੁਖ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਚੰਦ੍ਰਮਾ ('ਮਾਹ') ਸ਼ਰਮਿੰਦਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਸੀ ॥੧॥
Her sparkling eyes made even the flowers to blush.(1)

ਸ੍ਰੀਜਗਜੋਤਿਮਤੀਤਿਹਨਾਮਾ॥
ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਂ ਜਗਜੋਤਿ ਮਤੀ ਸੀ।
ਜਾਸਮਔਰਨਜਗਮੋਬਾਮਾ॥
ਉਸ ਵਰਗੀ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ।
Known as Jag Jot Mati, there was none equal to her in beauty in the world.
ਅਧਿਕਤਰੁਨਕੀਪ੍ਰਭਾਬਿਰਾਜੈ॥
(ਉਸ ਦੀ ਇਤਨੀ) ਅਧਿਕ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵਸ਼ਾਲੀ ਸੁੰਦਰਤਾ ਸੀ
ਲਖਿਤਾਕੌਤੜਿਤਾਤਨਲਾਜੈ॥੨॥
(ਕਿ) ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਬਿਜਲੀ ਤਕ ਸ਼ਰਮਿੰਦੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਸੀ ॥੨॥
On her sight, the lightening, as well, felt humiliated.(2)

ਇਕਰਾਜਾਅਟਕਤਭਯੋਨਿਰਖਿਤਰਨਿਕੇਅੰਗ॥
(ਉਸ) ਇਸਤਰੀ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਰੀਰ ('ਅੰਗ') ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਇਕ ਰਾਜਾ ਅਟਕ ਗਿਆ (ਅਰਥਾਤ ਮੋਹਿਤ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ)।
Impressed by her figurative beauty, a Raja was pervaded with lust.
ਰਤਿਮਾਨੀਰੁਚਿਮਾਨਿਕੈਅਤਿਹਿਤਚਿਤਕੈਸੰਗ॥੩॥
(ਉਸ ਨੇ) ਬਹੁਤ ਹਿਤ ਚਿਤ ਸਹਿਤ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਰੁਚੀ ਪੂਰਵਕ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਕ੍ਰੀੜਾ ਕੀਤੀ ॥੩॥
With determination, he presented his proposal to make love to her.(3)
ਸੋਨ੍ਰਿਪਪਰਅਟਕਤਭਈਨਿਤਿਗ੍ਰਿਹਲੇਤਬੁਲਾਇ॥
ਉਹ ਵੀ ਰਾਜੇ ਪ੍ਰਤਿ ਮੋਹਿਤ ਹੋ ਗਈ ਅਤੇ ਰੋਜ਼ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਘਰ ਸਦ ਲੈਂਦੀ।
She fell in love with the Raja too and through her maid,
ਚਿਤ੍ਰਕਲਾਇਕਸਹਚਰੀਤਿਹਗ੍ਰਿਹਤਾਹਿਪਠਾਇ॥੪॥
ਚਿਤ੍ਰਕਲਾ ਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਇਕ ਸਖੀ ਨੂੰ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਭੇਜ ਦਿੰਦੀ ॥੪॥
Chitarkala, called the Raja to her house.(4)
ਚਿਤ੍ਰਕਲਾਜੋਸਹਚਰੀਸੋਨ੍ਰਿਪਰੂਪਨਿਹਾਰਿ॥
ਜੋ ਚਿਤ੍ਰਕਲਾ ਸਖੀ ਸੀ ਉਹ ਰਾਜੇ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਬੇਹੋਸ਼ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਧਰਤੀ ਉਤੇ ਡਿਗ ਪਈ।
On the sight of the Raja, Chitarkala herself fell flat on the ground
ਗਿਰੀਮੂਰਛਨਾਹ੍ਵੈਧਰਨਿਹਰਅਰਿਸਰਗਯੋਮਾਰਿ॥੫॥
(ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ) ਸ਼ਿਵ ਦਾ ਵੈਰੀ (ਕਾਮ ਦੇਵ) ਤੀਰ ਮਾਰ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ ॥੫॥
Cupid, the adversary of Shiva, had pierced her with his arrow of love.(5)
ਚੌਪਈ॥

ਉਠਤਬਚਨਨ੍ਰਿਪਸਾਥਉਚਾਰੇ॥
(ਹੋਸ਼ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਕੇ) ਉਠਦਿਆਂ ਹੀ (ਉਸ ਨੇ) ਰਾਜੇ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਹਾ,
When she was roused, she said,
ਆਜੁਭਜੋਮੁਹਿਰਾਜਪਿਆਰੇ॥
ਹੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਰਾਜਨ! ਅਜ (ਤੁਸੀਂ) ਮੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਭੋਗ-ਵਿਲਾਸ ਕਰੋ।
‘O my Raja, please make love with me.
ਹੇਰਿਤੁਮੈਹਰਅਰਿਬਸਭਈ॥
(ਮੈਂ) ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਕਾਮ ਦੇਵ (ਸ਼ਿਵ ਦੇ ਵੈਰੀ) ਦੇ ਵਸ ਵਿਚ ਹੋ ਗਈ ਹਾਂ।
‘Your sight has put me in the grip of passion
ਮੋਕਹਬਿਸਰਿਸਕਲਸੁਧਿਗਈ॥੬॥
ਮੈਨੂੰ ਸਾਰੀ ਸੁਧ ਬੁਧ ਭੁਲ ਗਈ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
And I have lost all my senses.’(6)

ਸੁਨਤਬਚਨਨ੍ਰਿਪਨਕਰਿਯੋਤਾਸੌਭੋਗਬਨਾਇ॥
(ਉਸ ਦੇ ਬੋਲ) ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਰਾਜੇ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਭੋਗ-ਵਿਲਾਸ ਨਾ ਕੀਤਾ।
The Raja refused to make love with her. Fuming in rage she brought the Raja with her (to Jag Jog Mati’s house)
ਸੰਗਲ੍ਯਾਇਇਹਖਾਇਰਿਸਿਕਹਿਯੋਸਾਹਸੌਜਾਇ॥੭॥
(ਸਖੀ ਨੇ) ਗੁੱਸਾ ਖਾ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ (ਜਗਜੋਤਿ ਮਤੀ ਦੇ ਘਰ) ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਲ ਲਿਆਂਦਾ (ਅਤੇ ਉਧਰ) ਸ਼ਾਹ ਨੂੰ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਦਸ ਦਿੱਤਾ ॥੭॥
But went to the trader and told him that a man was visiting his house in his absence.(7)
ਅੜਿਲ॥

ਸੁਨਤਬਚਨਤਿਹਸਾਹਤੁਰਤਘਰਆਇਯੋ॥
ਉਸ ਦੀ ਗੱਲ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਸ਼ਾਹ ਤੁਰਤ ਘਰ ਆ ਗਿਆ।
Hearing this he came home immediately and was very much afflicted
ਲਖਿਯੋਤਵਨਤ੍ਰਿਯਭੇਦਅਧਿਕਦੁਖਪਾਇਯੋ॥
(ਉਹ) ਉਸ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਦੇ ਭੇਦ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਦੁਖੀ ਹੋਇਆ।
Seeing deceitful secret of his wife.
ਮੋਰਿਨਿਰਖਿਪਤਿਨ੍ਰਿਪਕੋਜਿਯਤੇਮਾਰਿਹੈ॥
(ਇਸਤਰੀ ਨੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਕਿ) ਮੇਰਾ ਪਤੀ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਰਾਜੇ ਨੂੰ ਜਾਨੋ ਮਾਰ ਦੇਵੇਗਾ।
The wife thought, seeing her with the Raja, he (husband) would kill
ਹੋਤਾਪਾਛੇਹਮਹੂੰਕੌਤੁਰਤਸੰਘਾਰਿਹੈ॥੮॥
ਉਸ ਪਿਛੋਂ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਤੁਰਤ ਮਾਰ ਦੇਵੇਗਾ ॥੮॥
Him and, thereafter, would finish her as well.(8)

ਤਾਤੇਆਗੇਕੀਜਿਯੈਨ੍ਰਿਪਕੋਤੁਰਤਉਪਾਇ॥
ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਰਾਜੇ (ਨੂੰ ਬਚਾਉਣ ਲਈ) ਕੋਈ ਜਲਦੀ ਉਪਾ ਕਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ।
She thought, ‘I must do something to save the Raja. I must serve
ਜਿਯਤੇਜਿਯਤਨਿਕਾਰਿਯੈਭੋਜਨਭਲੋਖਵਾਇ॥੯॥
(ਸੋਚਿਆ ਕਿ ਰਾਜੇ ਨੂੰ) ਚੰਗੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਭੋਜਨ ਕਰਾ ਕੇ ਜੀਉਂਦੇ ਜੀ ਘਰੋਂ ਕਢ ਦੇਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੯॥
Dainty food to my husband and send him away.’(9)
ਇਕਸਫਬੀਚਲਪੇਟਿਤਿਹਧਰਿਯੋਭੀਤਸੋਲਾਇ॥
ਉਸ ਨੇ (ਰਾਜੇ) ਨੂੰ ਇਕ ਚਟਾਈ ਵਿਚ ਲਪੇਟ ਕੇ ਦੀਵਾਰ ਨਾਲ ਲਗਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ।
She wrapped round the Raja in a hessian sack and made it stand near the wall.
ਜਾਇਸਾਹਆਗੇਲਿਯੌਭੋਜਨਭਲੋਮੰਗਾਇ॥੧੦॥
ਚੰਗਾ ਭੋਜਨ ਮੰਗਵਾ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਸ਼ਾਹ ਨੂੰ ਅਗੋਂ ਹੀ ਜਾ ਮਿਲੀ ॥੧੦॥
She received her trader husband with great pleasure and cooked lavish food for him.(10)
ਅੜਿਲ॥
ਅੜਿਲ:

ਭੋਜਨਭਲੋਸਾਹਕੌਤਾਹਿਖਵਾਇਯੋ॥
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਸ਼ਾਹ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਭੋਜਨ ਖਵਾਇਆ।
ਬਹੁਰਿਬਚਨਤਾਕੋਇਹਭਾਤਿਸੁਨਾਇਯੋ॥
ਫਿਰ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਬਚਨ ਕੀਤਾ।
She served him dainty viands and asked him to throw a handful of dryfruit towards the sack and said,
ਭਰਿਮੇਵਾਕੀਮੁਠਿਯਾਸਫਮੋਡਾਰਿਯੈ॥
(ਕਿ) ਮੇਵੇ ਦੀ (ਇਕ) ਮੁਠ ਭਰ ਕੇ ਇਸ ਚਟਾਈ ਵਿਚ ਪਾਓ।
ਹੋਪਰੇਜੀਤਿਬੈਦਾਵਪਰੇਬਿਨੁਹਾਰਿਯੈ॥੧੧॥
(ਮੇਵੇ ਦੀ ਮੁਠ) ਪੈਣ ਨਾਲ ਦਾਉ ਜਿਤ ਜਾਉਗੇ, ਨਾ ਪੈਣ ਨਾਲ ਹਾਰ ਜਾਉਗੇ ॥੧੧॥
‘You win if it goes straight into the sack, otherwise you lose.(11)
