ਜੀਤਿਫਿਰੈਨਵਖੰਡਨਕੌਨਹਿਬਾਸਵਸੋਕਬਹੂੰਡਰਪਾਨੇ॥
(ਜੋ) ਨੌਂ ਖੰਡਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਜਿਤ ਕੇ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਇੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਵੀ ਕਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਡਰਦੇ ਹਨ,
Nine continents of the earth, and were unafraid of the god Indra,
ਤੇਤੁਮਸੌਲਰਿਕੈਮਰਿਕੈਭਟਅੰਤਕੋਅੰਤਕੇਧਾਮਸਿਧਾਨੇ॥੩੯॥
ਉਹ ਯੋਧੇ (ਹੇ ਦੇਵੀ!) ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਲੜ ਕੇ ਅਤੇ ਅੰਤ ਨੂੰ ਮਰ ਕੇ ਯਮਰਾਜ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਨੂੰ ਚਲੇ ਗਏ ਹਨ ॥੩੯॥
Fought to the end and departed for their heavenly abodes.(39)

ਰਨਡਾਕਿਨਿਡਹਕਤਫਿਰਤਕਹਕਤਫਿਰਤਮਸਾਨ॥
ਰਣ ਵਿਚ ਡਾਕਣੀਆਂ ਡਕਾਰਦੀਆਂ ਫਿਰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਤ ('ਮਸਾਨ') ਕਿਲਕਾਰੀਆਂ ਮਾਰ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ।
Belching witches and howling ghosts started to roam around.
ਬਿਨੁਸੀਸਨਡੋਲਤਸੁਭਟਗਹਿਗਹਿਕਰਨਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਨ॥੪੦॥
ਬਿਨਾ ਸਿਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਯੋਧੇ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਨਾਂ ਪਕੜ ਪਕੜ ਕੇ (ਯੁੱਧ-ਭੂਮੀ ਵਿਚ) ਘੁੰਮ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ ॥੪੦॥
The heroes with decapitated heads went around the fields with swords in their hands.( 40)
ਅਸਿਅਨੇਕਕਾਢੇਕਰਨਲਰਹਿਸੁਭਟਸਮੁਹਾਇ॥
ਹੱਥਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਅਨੇਕ ਤਲਵਾਰਾਂ ਕਢ ਕੇ ਸੂਰਮੇ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਲੜ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ।
Numerous champions with unsheathed swords were fighting face to face,
ਲਰਿਗਿਰਿਮਰਿਭੂਪਰਪਰੈਬਰੈਬਰੰਗਨਿਜਾਇ॥੪੧॥
ਲੜਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਭੂਮੀ ਉਤੇ ਮਰ ਕੇ ਡਿਗ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਅਪੱਛਰਾਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਰ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ ॥੪੧॥
Raiding and combating to death, and praying to the Fairy goddess, rolled down on the earth.( 41)
ਅਨਤਰਯਾਜ੍ਯੋਸਿੰਧੁਕੋਚਹਤਤਰਨਕਰਿਜਾਉ॥
(ਹੇ ਦੇਵੀ!) ਅਣਤਾਰੂ ਜੇ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਨੂੰ ਤਰ ਕੇ ਜਾਣਾ ਚਾਹੇ
The one who could not swim, how could he, without a boat and
ਬਿਨੁਨੌਕਾਕੈਸੇਤਰੈਲਏਤਿਹਾਰੋਨਾਉ॥੪੨॥
ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਲੈਣ ਦੀ ਨੌਕਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਤਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪੨॥
Support of your Name, swim across the sea?(42)
ਮੂਕਉਚਰੈਸਾਸਤ੍ਰਖਟਪਿੰਗਗਿਰਨਚੜਿਜਾਇ॥
(ਹੇ ਦੇਵੀ!) ਜੇ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਸਹਾਇਤਾ ਕਰੋ ਤਾਂ ਗੁੰਗਾ ਛੇ ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਉਚਾਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਿੰਗਲਾ ਪਰਬਤ ਚੜ੍ਹ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ,
How could a dumb narrate the Six Shastras, a lame person could climb
ਅੰਧਲਖੈਬਦਰੋਸੁਨੈਜੋਤੁਮਕਰੌਸਹਾਇ॥੪੩॥
ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਵੇਖ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਬੋਲਾ ਸੁਣ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪੩॥
Up the mountains, a blind man could see, and a deaf could hear?( 43)
ਅਰਘਗਰਭਨ੍ਰਿਪਤ੍ਰਿਯਨਕੋਭੇਦਨਪਾਯੋਜਾਇ॥
ਮੋਤੀ ('ਅਰਘ') ਗਰਭ, ਰਾਜਾ ਅਤੇ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਦਾ ਭੇਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ।
The wonders of a child during pregnancy, a Raja and a female are unfathomable.
ਤਊਤਿਹਾਰੀਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਤੇਕਛੁਕਛੁਕਹੋਬਨਾਇ॥੪੪॥
ਫਿਰ ਵੀ ਤੇਰੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਕੁਝ ਕੁਝ ਬਣਾ ਕੇ ਕਹਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ॥੪੪॥
With Your blessings I have narrated this, although with a bit of exaggeration.( 44)
ਪ੍ਰਥਮਮਾਨਿਤੁਮਕੋਕਹੋਜਥਾਬੁਧਿਬਲੁਹੋਇ॥
ਪਹਿਲਾ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਮੰਨਾ ਕੇ ਯਥਾ ਬੁੱਧੀ ਬਲ (ਰਚਨਾ) ਕਥਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ।
Believing You be the omnipresent, I say, that I have rendered this
ਘਟਿਕਬਿਤਾਲਖਿਕੈਕਬਹਿਹਾਸਨਕਰਿਯਹੁਕੋਇ॥੪੫॥
(ਜੇ) ਕਵਿਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਹੇ ਕਵੀਓ! ਕੋਈ ਘਾਟ ਲਗੇ, ਤਾਂ ਮੇਰੀ ਹਾਸੀ ਨਾ ਕਰਨਾ ॥੪੫॥
With my limited understanding, and I prey not to laugh it off.( 45)
ਪ੍ਰਥਮਧ੍ਯਾਇਸ੍ਰੀਭਗਵਤੀਬਰਨੌਤ੍ਰਿਯਾਪ੍ਰਸੰਗ॥
ਪਹਿਲਾ ਅਧਿਆਇ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਭਗਵਤੀ (ਦਾ ਕਹਿ ਕੇ ਹੁਣ) ਤ੍ਰਿਆ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਗ ਦਾ ਵਰਣਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ।
To commence with, with devotion to the Reverend Faculty, I narrate the Female Wonders.
ਮੋਘਟਮੈਤੁਮਹ੍ਵੈਨਦੀਉਪਜਹੁਬਾਕਤਰੰਗ॥੪੬॥
(ਹੇ ਦੇਵੀ!) ਤੁਸੀਂ ਮੇਰੇ ਸ਼ਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਨਦੀ ਬਣ ਜਾਓ, (ਤਾਂ ਜੋ ਉਸ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਵਾਕ ਰੂਪੀ ਤਰੰਗਾਂ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਣ ॥੪੬॥
O the Passionless Universal Prowess, enable me to render the waves of narrative through my heart.( 46)

ਮੇਰੁਕਿਯੋਤ੍ਰਿਣਤੇਮੁਹਿਜਾਹਿਗਰੀਬਨਿਵਾਜਨਦੂਸਰਤੋਸੌ॥
(ਤੁਸੀਂ) ਮੈਂਨੂੰ ਇਕ ਤੀਲੇ ਤੋਂ ਸੁਮੇਰ ਪਰਬਤ ਬਣਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ; ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਵਰਗਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਦੂਜਾ ਗ਼ਰੀਬ ਨਿਵਾਜ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।
From a straw You can raise my status to as high as Sumer Hills and there is none other as benevolent to the poor as You.
ਭੂਲਛਿਮੋਹਮਰੀਪ੍ਰਭੁਆਪੁਨਭੂਲਨਹਾਰਕਹੂੰਕੋਊਮੋਸੌ॥
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੁਸੀਂ ਮੇਰੀ ਭੁਲ ਮਾਫ਼ ਕਰ ਦਿਓ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਮੇਰੇ ਵਰਗਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਭੁਲਣਹਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।
There is none other as pardonable as You.
ਸੇਵਕਰੈਤੁਮਰੀਤਿਨਕੇਛਿਨਮੈਧਨਲਾਗਤਧਾਮਭਰੋਸੌ॥
(ਜੋ) ਤੁਹਾਡੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਛਿਣ ਭਰ ਵਿਚ ਧਨ ਨਾਲ ਘਰ ਭਰ ਦਿੰਦੇ ਹੋ।
A little service to You is abundantly rewarded instantly.
ਯਾਕਲਿਮੈਸਭਿਕਲਿਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਨਕੀਭਾਰੀਭੁਜਾਨਕੋਭਾਰੀਭਰੋਸੌ॥੪੭॥
ਇਸ ਕਲਿਯੁਗ ਵਿਚ ਕਾਲੀ ਦੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਨ ਅਤੇ (ਉਸ ਦੀਆਂ) ਭਾਰੀ ਭੁਜਾਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਵੱਡਾ ਭਰੋਸਾ ਹੈ ॥੪੭॥
In the Kal-age one can only depend on the sword, the faculty and self determination.(47)
ਖੰਡਿਅਖੰਡਨਖੰਡਕੈਚੰਡਿਸੁਮੁੰਡਰਹੇਛਿਤਮੰਡਲਮਾਹੀ॥
ਨ ਖੰਡਿਤ ਕੀਤੇ ਜਾ ਸਕਣ ਵਾਲੇ (ਸੂਰਮਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ) ਮਾਰ ਕੇ ਚੰਡੀ ਨੇ (ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ) ਸਿਰ ਯੁੱਧ-ਭੂਮੀ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਟ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਹਨ।
The immortal heroes were annihilated, and their pride-filled heads were thrown on the earth.
ਦੰਡਿਅਦੰਡਨਕੋਭੁਜਦੰਡਨਭਾਰੀਘਮੰਡਕਿਯੋਬਲਬਾਹੀ॥
ਨਾ ਦੰਡੇ ਜਾ ਸਕਣ ਵਾਲਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੁਜ ਦੰਡਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਦੰਡਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਬਲਵਾਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਘਮੰਡ ਦੂਰ ਕੀਤਾ।
The egocentric, to whom no other could inflict punishment, you, with your vigorous arms, made pride-less.
ਥਾਪਿਅਖੰਡਲਕੌਸੁਰਮੰਡਲਨਾਦਸੁਨਿਯੋਬ੍ਰਹਮੰਡਮਹਾਹੀ॥
ਇੰਦਰ ('ਅਖੰਡਲ') ਨੂੰ ਸਵਰਗ ਵਿਚ ਸਥਾਪਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ (ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਦਾ) ਨਾਦ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੰਡ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਣਿਆ ਗਿਆ।
Once again Indra was established to rule the Creation and the happiness was ensued.
ਕ੍ਰੂਰਕਵੰਡਲਕੋਰਨਮੰਡਲਤੋਸਮਸੂਰਕੋਊਕਹੂੰਨਾਹੀ॥੪੮॥
(ਤੁਸੀਂ) ਯੁੱਧਭੂਮੀ ਵਿਚ ਕਠੋਰ ਧਨੁਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਧਾਰਨ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੀ ਹੋ, ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਵਰਗਾ ਸ਼ੂਰਵੀਰ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ॥੪੮॥
You adore the bow, and there is none other hero as great as you.( 48)(1)
ਇਤਿਸ੍ਰੀਚਰਿਤ੍ਰਪਖ੍ਯਾਨੇਚੰਡੀਚਰਿਤ੍ਰੇਪ੍ਰਥਮਧ੍ਯਾਇਸਮਾਪਤਮਸਤੁਸੁਭਮਸਤੁ॥੧॥੪੮॥ਅਫਜੂੰ॥
ਇਥੇ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰੋਪਾਖਿਆਨ ਦੇ ਚੰਡੀ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਦੇ ਪਹਿਲੇ ਅਧਿਆਇ ਦੀ ਸਮਾਪਤੀ, ਸਭ ਸ਼ੁਭ ਹੈ ॥੧॥੪੮॥ ਚਲਦਾ॥
This Auspicious Chritar of Chandi (the Goddess) ends the First Parable of the Chritars. Completed with Benediction. (1)(48)

ਚਿਤ੍ਰਵਤੀ ਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਨਗਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਇਕ ਰਾਜਾ ਸੀ।
There lived in the city of Chitervati, a Raja called Chitar Singh.
ਤੇਕੇਗ੍ਰਿਹਸੰਪਤਿਘਨੀਰਥਗਜਬਾਜਅਨੇਕ॥੧॥
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਬਹੁਤ ਧਨ-ਦੌਲਤ ਅਤੇ ਅਨੇਕ ਰਥ, ਹਾਥੀ, ਘੋੜੇ ਸਨ ॥੧॥
He enjoyed abundance of wealth, and possessed numerous material goods, chariots, elephants and horses.(1)
ਤਾਕੋਰੂਪਅਨੂਪਅਤਿਜੋਬਿਧਿਧਰਿਯੋਸੁਧਾਰਿ॥
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਧਾਤਾ ਨੇ ਚੰਗੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਅਨੂਪਮ ਰੂਪ ਪ੍ਰਦਾਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਸੀ।
He had been bestowed with beautiful physical features
ਸੁਰੀਆਸੁਰੀਕਿੰਨ੍ਰਨੀਰੀਝਿਰਹਤਪੁਰਨਾਰਿ॥੨॥
(ਉਸ ਉਤੇ) ਦੇਵ-ਪਤਨੀਆਂ, ਦੈਂਤ-ਪਤਨੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਕਿੰਨਰ-ਇਸਤਰੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਸ਼ਹਿਰਨਾਂ ਰੀਝ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਸਨ ॥੨॥
The consorts of the gods and demons, the female Sphinxes and the town fairies, were all enchanted.(2)
ਏਕਅਪਸਰਾਇੰਦ੍ਰਕੇਜਾਤਸਿੰਗਾਰਬਨਾਇ॥
ਇਕ ਅਪੱਛਰਾ ਸ਼ਿੰਗਾਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਇੰਦਰ ਪਾਸ ਜਾ ਰਹੀ ਸੀ।
A fairy, bedecking herself, was ready to go to Indra, the Celestial Raja of the Rajas,
ਨਿਰਖਰਾਇਅਟਕਤਿਭਈਕੰਜਭਵਰਕੇਭਾਇ॥੩॥
(ਉਸ) ਰਾਜੇ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ (ਅਪੱਛਰਾ) ਅਟਕ ਗਈ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਮਲ ਦੇ ਫੁੱਲ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਭੌਰਾ ਰੁਕ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
But she stymied on the vision of that Raja, like a butterfly on the sight of a flower.(3)

ਰਹੀਅਪਸਰਾਰੀਝਿਰੂਪਲਖਿਰਾਇਕੋ॥
ਰਾਜੇ ਦੇ ਰੂਪ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਅਪੱਛਰਾ ਮੋਹਿਤ ਹੋ ਗਈ।
Seeing the Raja the Fairy was captivated.
ਪਠੀਦੂਤਿਕਾਛਲਕਰਿਮਿਲਨਉਪਾਇਕੋ॥
(ਉਸ ਨੂੰ) ਮਿਲਣ ਦੇ ਉਪਾ ਵਜੋਂ ਛਲ ਪੂਰਵਕ (ਆਪਣੀ) ਦੂਤੀ ਭੇਜੀ।
Planning to meet him, she called in her messenger.
ਬਿਨੁਪ੍ਰੀਤਮਕੇਮਿਲੇਹਲਾਹਲਪੀਵਹੋ॥
(ਉਸ ਨੇ ਦੂਤੀ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਕਹਿ ਭੇਜਿਆ ਕਿ) ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਦੇ ਨਾ ਮਿਲਣ ਤੇ ਵਿਸ਼ ਪਾਨ ਕਰ ਲਵਾਂਗੀ।
‘Without meeting my beloved I would take poison,’ she told her
ਹੋਮਾਰਿਕਟਾਰੀਮਰਿਹੋਘਰੀਨਜੀਵਹੋ॥੪॥
ਜਾਂ ਕਟਾਰੀ ਮਾਰ ਕੇ ਮਰ ਜਾਵਾਂਗੀ ਅਤੇ ਇਕ ਘੜੀ ਵੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਜੀਵਾਂਗੀ ॥੪॥
Messenger, ‘Or I would push a dagger through me.’(4)

ਤਾਹਿਦੂਤਿਕਾਰਾਇਸੋਭੇਦਕਹ੍ਯੋਸਮੁਝਾਇ॥
ਉਸ ਦੂਤੀ ਨੇ ਰਾਜੇ ਨੂੰ (ਸਾਰਾ) ਭੇਦ ਕਹਿ ਕੇ ਸਮਝਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ।
The messenger made the Raja to empathize with her (the fairy).
ਬਰੀਰਾਇਸੁਖਪਾਇਮਨਦੁੰਦਭਿਢੋਲਬਜਾਇ॥੫॥
ਰਾਜੇ ਨੇ (ਉਸ ਅਪੱਛਰਾ ਨੂੰ) ਵਰ ਲਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਢੋਲ ਅਤੇ ਨਗਾਰੇ ਵਜਾ ਕੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਖ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕੀਤਾ ॥੫॥
And, rejoicing with the beats of the drums, the Raja took her as his bride.(5)
ਏਕਪੁਤ੍ਰਤਾਤੇਭਯੋਅਮਿਤਰੂਪਕੀਖਾਨਿ॥
ਉਸ (ਅਪੱਛਰਾ) ਤੋਂ ਇਕ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਜੋ ਬਹੁਤ ਅਧਿਕ ('ਅਮਿਤ') ਰੂਪ ਦੀ ਖਾਣ ਸੀ।
The Fairy gave birth to a beautiful son,
ਮਹਾਰੁਦ੍ਰਹੂੰਰਿਸਿਕਰੇਕਾਮਦੇਵਪਹਿਚਾਨਿ॥੬॥
(ਉਸ ਨੂੰ) ਕਾਮ ਦੇਵ ਸਮਝ ਕੇ ਸ਼ਿਵ ਕ੍ਰੋਧਿਤ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ ॥੬॥
Who was as powerful as Shiva and passionate like Kamdev, the Cupid.(6)
ਬਹੁਤਬਰਸਿਸੰਗਅਪਸਰਾਭੂਪਤਿਮਾਨੇਭੋਗ॥
ਬਹੁਤ ਵਰ੍ਹਿਆਂ ਤਕ ਰਾਜੇ ਨੇ ਅਪੱਛਰਾ ਨਾਲ ਭੋਗ-ਵਿਲਾਸ ਕੀਤਾ।
The Raja had the pleasure of making love to the Fairy for many years,
ਬਹੁਰਿਅਪਸਰਾਇੰਦ੍ਰਕੇਜਾਤਭਈਉਡਿਲੋਗ॥੭॥
ਫਿਰ ਅਪੱਛਰਾ ਉਡ ਕੇ ਇੰਦਰ ਲੋਕ ਨੂੰ ਚਲੀ ਗਈ ॥੭॥
But one day the Fairy flew away to the Domain of Indra.(7)
ਤਿਹਬਿਨੁਭੂਤਤਿਦੁਖਿਤਹ੍ਵੈਮੰਤ੍ਰੀਲਏਬੁਲਾਇ॥
ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਰਾਜੇ ਨੇ ਦੁਖੀ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਬੁਲਾ ਲਿਆ
Without her company the Raja was extremely afflicted, and he called in his ministers.
ਚਿਤ੍ਰਚਿਤ੍ਰਿਤਾਕੋਤੁਰਿਤਦੇਸਨਦਯੋਪਠਾਇ॥੮॥
