ਸਿਰਿਸਭਨਾਸਮਰਥੁਨਦਰਿਨਿਹਾਲਿਆ॥੧੭॥
ਤੂੰ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਤੇ ਹਾਕਮ ਹੈਂ, ਮੇਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਸੁਖ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ ॥੧੭॥
You are the Almighty Overlord of all; You bless us with Your Glance of Grace. ||17||

Shalok, Fifth Mahalaa:
ਕਾਮਕ੍ਰੋਧਮਦਲੋਭਮੋਹਦੁਸਟਬਾਸਨਾਨਿਵਾਰਿ॥
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਕਾਮ, ਕ੍ਰੋਧ, ਲੋਭ, ਮੋਹ, ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਦੀ ਮਸਤੀ ਤੇ ਭੈੜੀਆਂ ਵਾਸ਼ਨਾ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ!
Take away my sexual desire, anger, pride, greed, emotional attachment and evil desires.
ਰਾਖਿਲੇਹੁਪ੍ਰਭਆਪਣੇਨਾਨਕਸਦਬਲਿਹਾਰਿ॥੧॥
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਰੱਖਿਆ ਕਰ! ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇਰੇ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਾ ਬਲਹਾਰੀ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
Protect me, O my God; Nanak is forever a sacrifice to You. ||1||

Fifth Mahalaa:
ਖਾਂਦਿਆਖਾਂਦਿਆਮੁਹੁਘਠਾਪੈਨੰਦਿਆਸਭੁਅੰਗੁ॥
ਖਾਂਦਿਆਂ ਖਾਂਦਿਆਂ ਮੂੰਹ (ਭੀ) ਘਸ ਗਿਆ ਤੇ ਪਹਿਨਦਿਆਂ ਸਾਰਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਹੀ ਲਿੱਸਾ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ (ਭਾਵ, ਇਹਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਆਹਰਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਜੀਵਨ ਲੰਘ ਗਿਆ),
By eating and eating, the mouth is worn out; by wearing clothes, the limbs grow weary.
ਨਾਨਕਧ੍ਰਿਗੁਤਿਨਾਦਾਜੀਵਿਆਜਿਨਸਚਿਨਲਗੋਰੰਗੁ॥੨॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਿਚ ਨਾਹ ਬਣਿਆ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਜੀਊਣਾ ਫਿਟਕਾਰ-ਜੋਗ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
O Nanak, cursed are the lives of those who are not attuned to the Love of the True Lord. ||2||
ਪਉੜੀ॥
Pauree:
ਜਿਉਜਿਉਤੇਰਾਹੁਕਮੁਤਿਵੈਤਿਉਹੋਵਣਾ॥
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ) ਉਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਰਤਾਰਾ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਤੇਰਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
As is the Hukam of Your Command, so do things happen.
ਜਹਜਹਰਖਹਿਆਪਿਤਹਜਾਇਖੜੋਵਣਾ॥
ਜਿਥੇ ਜਿਥੇ ਤੂੰ ਆਪ (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਓਥੇ ਹੀ (ਜੀਵ) ਜਾ ਖਲੋਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
Wherever You keep me, there I go and stand.
ਨਾਮਤੇਰੈਕੈਰੰਗਿਦੁਰਮਤਿਧੋਵਣਾ॥
ਜੋ ਜੀਵ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ (ਰਹਿੰਦੇ) ਹਨ ਉਹ ਭੈੜੀ ਮੱਤ ਧੋ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ,
With the Love of Your Name, I wash away my evil-mindedness.
ਜਪਿਜਪਿਤੁਧੁਨਿਰੰਕਾਰਭਰਮੁਭਉਖੋਵਣਾ॥
ਤੇ, ਹੇ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ! ਤੈਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰ ਸਿਮਰ ਕੇ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਤੇ ਡਰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
By continually meditating on You, O Formless Lord, my doubts and fears are dispelled.
ਜੋਤੇਰੈਰੰਗਿਰਤੇਸੇਜੋਨਿਨਜੋਵਣਾ॥
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਤੇਰੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਏ ਜਾਂਦੇ,
Those who are attuned to Your Love, shall not be trapped in reincarnation.
ਅੰਤਰਿਬਾਹਰਿਇਕੁਨੈਣਅਲੋਵਣਾ॥
ਅੰਦਰ ਬਾਹਰ (ਹਰ ਥਾਂ) ਉਹ ਇਕ (ਤੈਨੂੰ ਹੀ) ਅੱਖਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਵੇਖਦੇ ਹਨ।
Inwardly and outwardly, they behold the One Lord with their eyes.
ਜਿਨੑੀਪਛਾਤਾਹੁਕਮੁਤਿਨੑਕਦੇਨਰੋਵਣਾ॥
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਪਛਾਣਿਆ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਕਦੇ ਪਛੁਤਾਂਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ,
Those who recognize the Lord's Command never weep.
ਨਾਉਨਾਨਕਬਖਸੀਸਮਨਮਾਹਿਪਰੋਵਣਾ॥੧੮॥
ਤੇ, ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਰੂਪ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ੀਸ਼ (ਸਦਾ ਆਪਣੇ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਰੋਈ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧੮॥
O Nanak, they are blessed with the gift of the Name, woven into the fabric of their minds. ||18||
ਸਲੋਕਮਃ੫॥
Shalok, Fifth Mahalaa:
ਜੀਵਦਿਆਨਚੇਤਿਓਮੁਆਰਲੰਦੜੋਖਾਕ॥
ਜਿਤਨਾ ਚਿਰ ਜੀਊਂਦਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਰੱਬ ਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਨਾਹ ਕੀਤਾ, ਮਰ ਗਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਮਿੱਟੀ ਵਿਚ ਰਲ ਗਿਆ;
Those who do not remember the Lord while they are alive, shall mix with the dust when they die.
ਨਾਨਕਦੁਨੀਆਸੰਗਿਗੁਦਾਰਿਆਸਾਕਤਮੂੜਨਪਾਕ॥੧॥
ਤੇ, ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਰੱਬ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਟੁੱਟੇ ਹੋਏ ਐਸੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਗੰਦੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ (ਜੀਵਨ ਅਜਾਈਂ) ਗੁਜ਼ਾਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ॥੧॥
O Nanak, the foolish and filthy faithless cynic passes his life engrossed in the world. ||1||

Fifth Mahalaa:
ਜੀਵੰਦਿਆਹਰਿਚੇਤਿਆਮਰੰਦਿਆਹਰਿਰੰਗਿ॥
ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਜੀਊਂਦਿਆਂ (ਸਾਰੀ ਉਮਰ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਰੱਖਿਆ, ਤੇ ਮਰਨ ਵੇਲੇ ਭੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਰਿਹਾ,
One who remembers the Lord while he is alive, shall be imbued with the Lord's Love when he dies.
ਜਨਮੁਪਦਾਰਥੁਤਾਰਿਆਨਾਨਕਸਾਧੂਸੰਗਿ॥੨॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਸ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜੀਵਨ-ਰੂਪ ਅਮੋਲਕ ਚੀਜ਼ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਵਿਚ ਰੁੜ੍ਹਨੋਂ) ਬਚਾ ਲਈ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
The precious gift of his life is redeemed, O Nanak, in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy. ||2||
ਪਉੜੀ॥
Pauree:
ਆਦਿਜੁਗਾਦੀਆਪਿਰਖਣਵਾਲਿਆ॥
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਸਦਾ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਆਪ (ਸਭ ਦੀ) ਰੱਖਿਆ ਕਰਦਾ ਆਇਆ ਹੈ।
From the beginning, and through the ages, You have been our Protector and Preserver.
ਸਚੁਨਾਮੁਕਰਤਾਰੁਸਚੁਪਸਾਰਿਆ॥
ਉਸ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ।
True is Your Name, O Creator Lord, and True is Your Creation.
ਊਣਾਕਹੀਨਹੋਇਘਟੇਘਟਿਸਾਰਿਆ॥
ਕੋਈ ਥਾਂ ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਖ਼ਾਲੀ ਨਹੀਂ; ਹਰੇਕ ਇਕ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ।
You do not lack anything; You are filling each and every heart.
ਮਿਹਰਵਾਨਸਮਰਥਆਪੇਹੀਘਾਲਿਆ॥
ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਤੇ ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਕਰਨ-ਜੋਗਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ) ਕਮਾਈ ਕਰਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
You are merciful and all-powerful; You Yourself cause us to serve You.
ਜਿਨੑਮਨਿਵੁਠਾਆਪਿਸੇਸਦਾਸੁਖਾਲਿਆ॥
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ) ਆ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
Those whose minds in which You dwell are forever at peace.
ਆਪੇਰਚਨੁਰਚਾਇਆਪੇਹੀਪਾਲਿਆ॥
(ਪ੍ਰਭੂ) ਆਪ ਹੀ ਜਗਤ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਇਸ ਦੀ ਪਾਲਣਾ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।
Having created the creation, You Yourself cherish it.
ਸਭੁਕਿਛੁਆਪੇਆਪਿਬੇਅੰਤਅਪਾਰਿਆ॥
ਉਹ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਹੈ, ਅਪਾਰ ਹੈ, ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਆਪ ਹੈ।
You Yourself are everything, O infinite, endless Lord.
ਗੁਰਪੂਰੇਕੀਟੇਕਨਾਨਕਸੰਮੑਾਲਿਆ॥੧੯॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ) ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੯॥
Nanak seeks the Protection and Support of the Perfect Guru. ||19||
ਸਲੋਕਮਃ੫॥
Shalok, Fifth Mahalaa:
ਆਦਿਮਧਿਅਰੁਅੰਤਿਪਰਮੇਸਰਿਰਖਿਆ॥
(ਵਿਘਨਾਂ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਪਰਮੇਸਰ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਸਦਾ ਹੀ (ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਹੁਣ ਤਕ, ਆਪਣੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਨੂੰ) ਬਚਾਇਆ ਹੈ।
In the beginning, in the middle and in the end, the Transcendent Lord has saved me.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿਦਿਤਾਹਰਿਨਾਮੁਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁਚਖਿਆ॥
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਮ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਨੇ ਨਾਮ-ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਚੱਖਿਆ ਹੈ,
The True Guru has blessed me with the Lord's Name, and I have tasted the Ambrosial Nectar.
ਸਾਧਾਸੰਗੁਅਪਾਰੁਅਨਦਿਨੁਹਰਿਗੁਣਰਵੈ॥
ਤੇ (ਉਸ ਨੂੰ) ਅਮੋਲਕ ਸਤ-ਸੰਗ (ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹੈ, ਜਿਥੇ) ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ (ਉਹ ਸੇਵਕ) ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਚੇਤੇ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
In the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, I chant the Glorious Praises of the Lord, night and day.
ਪਾਏਮਨੋਰਥਸਭਿਜੋਨੀਨਹਭਵੈ॥
ਇੰਜ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਮਨੋਰਥ ਪੂਰੇ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ (ਭਾਵ, ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਵਾਸ਼ਨਾਂ ਮਿਟ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ, ਤੇ) ਉਹ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਭਟਕਦਾ।
I have obtained all my objectives, and I shall not wander in reincarnation again.
ਸਭੁਕਿਛੁਕਰਤੇਹਥਿਕਾਰਣੁਜੋਕਰੈ॥
ਪਰ ਇਹ ਸਾਰੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਦੇ ਹੱਥ ਵਿਚ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਉਹੀ ਆਪ (ਆਪਣੇ ਲਈ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦਾ) ਵਸੀਲਾ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
Everything is in the Hands of the Creator; He does what is done.
ਨਾਨਕੁਮੰਗੈਦਾਨੁਸੰਤਾਧੂਰਿਤਰੈ॥੧॥
ਨਾਨਕ ਇਹ ਦਾਨ ਮੰਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ (ਨਾਨਕ ਭੀ) ਸੰਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਚਰਨ-ਧੂੜ ਲੈ ਕੇ (ਭਾਵ, ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ, ਇਸ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਜਾਏ ॥੧॥
Nanak begs for the gift of the dust of the feet of the Holy, which shall deliver him. ||1||
ਮਃ੫॥
Fifth Mahalaa:
ਤਿਸਨੋਮੰਨਿਵਸਾਇਜਿਨਿਉਪਾਇਆ॥
ਉਸ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ) ਨੂੰ (ਆਪਣੇ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾ ਜਿਸ ਨੇ (ਤੈਨੂੰ) ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ।
Enshrine Him in your mind, the One who created you.
ਜਿਨਿਜਨਿਧਿਆਇਆਖਸਮੁਤਿਨਿਸੁਖੁਪਾਇਆ॥
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਖਸਮ (-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ) ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਇਆ ਹੈ,
Whoever meditates on the Lord and Master obtains peace.
ਸਫਲੁਜਨਮੁਪਰਵਾਨੁਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਆਇਆ॥
ਤੇ ਉਸ ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਦਾ (ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ) ਆਉਣਾ ਮੁਬਾਰਿਕ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਕਾਮਯਾਬ ਹੋ ਗਈ ਹੈ।
Fruitful is the birth, and approved is the coming of the Gurmukh.
ਹੁਕਮੈਬੁਝਿਨਿਹਾਲੁਖਸਮਿਫੁਰਮਾਇਆ॥
ਖਸਮ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ) ਜੋ ਹੁਕਮ ਦਿੱਤਾ, ਉਸ ਹੁਕਮ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝ ਕੇ ਉਹ (ਗੁਰਮੁਖ) ਸਦਾ ਖਿੜਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
One who realizes the Hukam of the Lord's Command shall be blessed - so has the Lord and Master ordained.
ਜਿਸੁਹੋਆਆਪਿਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲੁਸੁਨਹਭਰਮਾਇਆ॥
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਮੇਹਰਵਾਨ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦਾ।
One who is blessed with the Lord's Mercy does not wander.
ਜੋਜੋਦਿਤਾਖਸਮਿਸੋਈਸੁਖੁਪਾਇਆ॥
ਖਸਮ (-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ) ਨੇ ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਦਿੱਤਾ, ਉਹ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਖ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਤ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
Whatever the Lord and Master gives him, with that he is content.
ਨਾਨਕਜਿਸਹਿਦਇਆਲੁਬੁਝਾਏਹੁਕਮੁਮਿਤ॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਤੇ ਮਿੱਤਰ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ) ਮੇਹਰਵਾਨ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈ,
O Nanak, one who is blessed with the kindness of the Lord, our Friend, realizes the Hukam of His Command.
ਜਿਸਹਿਭੁਲਾਏਆਪਿਮਰਿਮਰਿਜਮਹਿਨਿਤ॥੨॥
ਪਰ, ਜਿਸ ਜਿਸ ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਭੁੱਲ ਵਿਚ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਨਿੱਤ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਮਰਦੇ ਜੰਮਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੨॥
But those whom the Lord Himself causes to wander, continue to die, and take reincarnation again. ||2||
ਪਉੜੀ॥
Pauree:
ਨਿੰਦਕਮਾਰੇਤਤਕਾਲਿਖਿਨੁਟਿਕਣਨਦਿਤੇ॥
(ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਦੀ) ਨਿੰਦਿਆ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਝੱਟ-ਪੱਟ ਹੀ ਮਾਰ ਦਿਤਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਇਕ ਪਲ ਵੀ ਟਿਕਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿਤਾ (ਇਕ ਪਲ ਭਰ ਭੀ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਨ ਦਿੱਤੀ)।
The slanderers are destroyed in an instant; they are not spared for even a moment.
ਪ੍ਰਭਦਾਸਕਾਦੁਖੁਨਖਵਿਸਕਹਿਫੜਿਜੋਨੀਜੁਤੇ॥
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਦਾਸਾਂ ਦਾ ਦੁੱਖ ਸਹਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦੇ (ਭਾਵ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਬੰਦਗੀ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਦੁੱਖ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੋਂਹਦਾ), ਪਰ ਨਿੰਦਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਜੂਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ।
God will not endure the sufferings of His slaves, but catching the slanderers, He binds them to the cycle of reincarnation.
