ਰਚਿਰਚਨਾਅਪਨੀਕਲਧਾਰੀ॥
ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਰਚ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਸੱਤਿਆ (ਇਸ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਵਿਚ) ਟਿਕਾਈ ਹੈ।
Having created the creation, He infuses His own power into it.
ਅਨਿਕਬਾਰਨਾਨਕਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ॥੮॥੧੮॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ) ਮੈਂ ਕਈ ਵਾਰ (ਐਸੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੋਂ) ਸਦਕੇ ਹਾਂ ॥੮॥੧੮॥
So many times, Nanak is a sacrifice to Him. ||8||18||

Shalok:
ਸਾਥਿਨਚਾਲੈਬਿਨੁਭਜਨਬਿਖਿਆਸਗਲੀਛਾਰੁ॥
(ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ) ਭਜਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਸ਼ੈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ) ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦੀ, ਸਾਰੀ ਮਾਇਆ (ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਕਮਾਉਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਗਤ ਤੋਂ ਤੁਰਨ ਵੇਲੇ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਸੁਆਹ (ਸਮਾਨ) ਹੈ।
Nothing shall go along with you, except your devotion. All corruption is like ashes.
ਹਰਿਹਰਿਨਾਮੁਕਮਾਵਨਾਨਾਨਕਇਹੁਧਨੁਸਾਰੁ॥੧॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਸਿਮਰਨ) ਦੀ ਕਮਾਈ ਕਰਨਾ ਹੀ (ਸਭ ਤੋਂ) ਚੰਗਾ ਧਨ ਹੈ (ਇਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਨਿਭਦਾ ਹੈ) ॥੧॥
Practice the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. O Nanak, this is the most excellent wealth. ||1||

ਸੰਤਜਨਾਮਿਲਿਕਰਹੁਬੀਚਾਰੁ॥
ਸੰਤਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ) ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕਰੋ,
Joining the Company of the Saints, practice deep meditation.
ਏਕੁਸਿਮਰਿਨਾਮਆਧਾਰੁ॥
ਇੱਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰੋ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ (ਲਵੋ)।
Remember the One, and take the Support of the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
ਅਵਰਿਉਪਾਵਸਭਿਮੀਤਬਿਸਾਰਹੁ॥
ਹੇ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ! ਹੋਰ ਸਾਰੇ ਹੀਲੇ ਛੱਡ ਦਿਉ,
Forget all other efforts, O my friend
ਚਰਨਕਮਲਰਿਦਮਹਿਉਰਿਧਾਰਹੁ॥
ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਕਮਲ (ਵਰਗੇ ਸੋਹਣੇ) ਚਰਨ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾਉ।
- enshrine the Lord's Lotus Feet within your heart.
ਕਰਨਕਾਰਨਸੋਪ੍ਰਭੁਸਮਰਥੁ॥
ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਆਪ) ਕਰਨ (ਤੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਪਾਸੋਂ) ਕਰਾਉਣ ਦੀ ਤਾਕਤ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ,
God is All-powerful; He is the Cause of causes.
ਦ੍ਰਿੜੁਕਰਿਗਹਹੁਨਾਮੁਹਰਿਵਥੁ॥
ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਰੂਪੀ (ਸੋਹਣਾ) ਪਦਾਰਥ ਪੱਕਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਸਾਂਭ ਲਵੋ।
Grasp firmly the object of the Lord's Name.
ਇਹੁਧਨੁਸੰਚਹੁਹੋਵਹੁਭਗਵੰਤ॥
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) (ਨਾਮ-ਰੂਪ) ਇਹ ਧਨ ਇਕੱਠਾ ਕਰੋ ਤੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਬਣੋ,
Gather this wealth, and become very fortunate.
ਸੰਤਜਨਾਕਾਨਿਰਮਲਮੰਤੁ॥
ਸੰਤਾਂ ਦਾ ਇਹੀ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਹੈ।
Pure are the instructions of the humble Saints.
ਏਕਆਸਰਾਖਹੁਮਨਮਾਹਿ॥
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਇਕ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ) ਆਸ ਰੱਖੋ,
Keep faith in the One Lord within your mind.
ਸਰਬਰੋਗਨਾਨਕਮਿਟਿਜਾਹਿ॥੧॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਸਾਰੇ ਰੋਗ ਮਿਟ ਜਾਣਗੇ ॥੧॥
All disease, O Nanak, shall then be dispelled. ||1||
ਜਿਸੁਧਨਕਉਚਾਰਿਕੁੰਟਉਠਿਧਾਵਹਿ॥
(ਹੇ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ!) ਜਿਸ ਧਨ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ (ਤੂੰ) ਚੌਹੀਂ ਪਾਸੀਂ ਉਠ ਦੌੜਦਾ ਹੈਂ,
The wealth which you chase after in the four directions
ਸੋਧਨੁਹਰਿਸੇਵਾਤੇਪਾਵਹਿ॥
ਉਹ ਧਨ ਤੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਤੋਂ ਲਏਂਗਾ।
you shall obtain that wealth by serving the Lord.
ਜਿਸੁਸੁਖਕਉਨਿਤਬਾਛਹਿਮੀਤ॥
ਹੇ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ! ਜਿਸ ਸੁਖ ਨੂੰ ਤੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਤਾਂਘਦਾ ਹੈਂ,
The peace, which you always yearn for, O friend
ਸੋਸੁਖੁਸਾਧੂਸੰਗਿਪਰੀਤਿ॥
ਉਹ ਸੁਖ ਸੰਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਰ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ (ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ)।
that peace comes by the love of the Company of the Holy.
ਜਿਸੁਸੋਭਾਕਉਕਰਹਿਭਲੀਕਰਨੀ॥
ਜਿਸ ਸੋਭਾ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਤੂੰ ਨੇਕ ਕਮਾਈ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ,
The glory, for which you perform good deeds
ਸਾਸੋਭਾਭਜੁਹਰਿਕੀਸਰਨੀ॥
ਉਹ ਸੋਭਾ (ਖੱਟਣ ਲਈ) ਤੂੰ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਦੀ ਸਰਣ ਪਉ।
- you shall obtain that glory by seeking the Lord's Sanctuary.
ਅਨਿਕਉਪਾਵੀਰੋਗੁਨਜਾਇ॥
(ਜੇਹੜਾ ਹਉਮੈ ਦਾ) ਰੋਗ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਹੀਲਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ,
All sorts of remedies have not cured the disease
ਰੋਗੁਮਿਟੈਹਰਿਅਵਖਧੁਲਾਇ॥
ਉਹ ਰੋਗ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਰੂਪੀ ਦਵਾਈ ਵਰਤਿਆਂ ਮਿਟ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
- the disease is cured only by giving the medicine of the Lord's Name.
ਸਰਬਨਿਧਾਨਮਹਿਹਰਿਨਾਮੁਨਿਧਾਨੁ॥
ਸਾਰੇ (ਦੁਨੀਆਵੀ) ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਿਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਵਧੀਆ) ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਹੈ।
Of all treasures, the Lord's Name is the supreme treasure.
ਜਪਿਨਾਨਕਦਰਗਹਪਰਵਾਨੁ॥੨॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਨਾਮ) ਜਪ, ਦਰਗਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਕਬੂਲ (ਹੋਵੇਂਗਾ) ॥੨॥
Chant it, O Nanak, and be accepted in the Court of the Lord. ||2||
ਮਨੁਪਰਬੋਧਹੁਹਰਿਕੈਨਾਇ॥
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਆਪਣੇ) ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨਾਲ ਜਗਾਉ,
Enlighten your mind with the Name of the Lord.
ਦਹਦਿਸਿਧਾਵਤਆਵੈਠਾਇ॥
(ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ) ਦਸੀਂ ਪਾਸੀਂ ਦੌੜਦਾ (ਇਹ ਮਨ) ਟਿਕਾਣੇ ਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
Having wandered around in the ten directions, it comes to its place of rest.
ਤਾਕਉਬਿਘਨੁਨਲਾਗੈਕੋਇ॥
ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਔਕੜ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੋਂਹਦੀ,
No obstacle stands in the way of one
ਜਾਕੈਰਿਦੈਬਸੈਹਰਿਸੋਇ॥
ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ।
whose heart is filled with the Lord.
ਕਲਿਤਾਤੀਠਾਂਢਾਹਰਿਨਾਉ॥
ਕਲਿਜੁਗ ਤੱਤੀ (ਅੱਗ) ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਵਿਕਾਰ ਜੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਾੜ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਠੰਢਾ ਹੈ,
The Dark Age of Kali Yuga is so hot; the Lord's Name is soothing and cool.
ਸਿਮਰਿਸਿਮਰਿਸਦਾਸੁਖਪਾਉ॥
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਸਿਮਰੋ ਤੇ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਉ।
Remember, remember it in meditation, and obtain everlasting peace.
ਭਉਬਿਨਸੈਪੂਰਨਹੋਇਆਸ॥
(ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿਆਂ) ਡਰ ਉੱਡ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ, ਆਸ ਪੁੱਗ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਨਾਹ ਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਸਾਂ ਬੰਨ੍ਹਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਨਾਹ ਹੀ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਆਸਾਂ ਦੇ ਟੁੱਟਣ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਡਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ)
Your fear shall be dispelled, and your hopes shall be fulfilled.
ਭਗਤਿਭਾਇਆਤਮਪਰਗਾਸ॥
(ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਆਤਮਾ ਚਮਕ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
By devotional worship and loving adoration, your soul shall be enlightened.
ਤਿਤੁਘਰਿਜਾਇਬਸੈਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ॥
(ਜੋ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ) ਉਸ ਦੇ (ਹਿਰਦੇ) ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ।
You shall go to that home, and live forever.
ਕਹੁਨਾਨਕਕਾਟੀਜਮਫਾਸੀ॥੩॥
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ (ਕਿ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਿਆਂ) ਜਮਾਂ ਦੀ ਫਾਹੀ ਕੱਟੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
Says Nanak, the noose of death is cut away. ||3||
ਤਤੁਬੀਚਾਰੁਕਹੈਜਨੁਸਾਚਾ॥
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਰੂਪ ਸੋਚ ਸੋਚਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਸਚ-ਮੁਚ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹੈ,
One who contemplates the essence of reality, is said to be the true person.
ਜਨਮਿਮਰੈਸੋਕਾਚੋਕਾਚਾ॥
ਪਰ ਜੋ ਜੰਮ ਕੇ (ਨਿਰਾ) ਮਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਤੇ ਬੰਦਗੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ) ਉਹ ਨਿਰੋਲ ਕੱਚਾ ਹੈ।
Birth and death are the lot of the false and the insincere.
ਆਵਾਗਵਨੁਮਿਟੈਪ੍ਰਭਸੇਵ॥
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਗੇੜ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ;
Coming and going in reincarnation is ended by serving God.
ਆਪੁਤਿਆਗਿਸਰਨਿਗੁਰਦੇਵ॥
ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ, ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨੀ ਪੈ ਕੇ (ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਗੇੜ ਮੁੱਕਦਾ ਹੈ)
Give up your selfishness and conceit, and seek the Sanctuary of the Divine Guru.
ਇਉਰਤਨਜਨਮਕਾਹੋਇਉਧਾਰੁ॥
ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਕੀਮਤੀ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਸਫਲਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
Thus the jewel of this human life is saved.
ਹਰਿਹਰਿਸਿਮਰਿਪ੍ਰਾਨਆਧਾਰੁ॥
(ਤਾਂ ਤੇ, ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰ, (ਇਹੀ) ਪ੍ਰਾਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੈ।
Remember the Lord, Har, Har, the Support of the breath of life.
ਅਨਿਕਉਪਾਵਨਛੂਟਨਹਾਰੇ॥
ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਹੀਲੇ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ (ਆਵਾਗਵਨ ਤੋਂ) ਬਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕੀਦਾ;
By all sorts of efforts, people are not saved
ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿਸਾਸਤਬੇਦਬੀਚਾਰੇ॥
ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੀਆਂ ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਵੇਦ (ਆਦਿਕ) ਵਿਚਾਰਿਆਂ (ਆਵਾ ਗਵਨ ਤੋਂ ਛੁਟਕਾਰਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ।)
not by studying the Simritees, the Shaastras or the Vedas.
ਹਰਿਕੀਭਗਤਿਕਰਹੁਮਨੁਲਾਇ॥
ਮਨ ਲਾ ਕੇ ਕੇਵਲ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਹੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰੋ।
Worship the Lord with whole-hearted devotion.
ਮਨਬੰਛਤਨਾਨਕਫਲਪਾਇ॥੪॥
(ਜੋ ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ) ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਨ-ਇੱਛਤ ਫਲ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੪॥
O Nanak, you shall obtain the fruits of your mind's desire. ||4||
ਸੰਗਿਨਚਾਲਸਿਤੇਰੈਧਨਾ॥
ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨ! ਧਨ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ,
Your wealth shall not go with you;
ਤੂੰਕਿਆਲਪਟਾਵਹਿਮੂਰਖਮਨਾ॥
ਤੂੰ ਕਿਉਂ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਜੱਫਾ ਮਾਰੀ ਬੈਠਾ ਹੈਂ?
why do you cling to it, you fool?
ਸੁਤਮੀਤਕੁਟੰਬਅਰੁਬਨਿਤਾ॥
ਪੁਤ੍ਰ, ਮਿੱਤ੍ਰ, ਪਰਵਾਰ ਤੇ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ;
Children, friends, family and spouse
ਇਨਤੇਕਹਹੁਤੁਮਕਵਨਸਨਾਥਾ॥
ਇਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ, ਦੱਸ, ਕੌਣ ਤੇਰਾ ਸਾਥ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ?
who of these shall accompany you?
ਰਾਜਰੰਗਮਾਇਆਬਿਸਥਾਰ॥
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਅਡੰਬਰ, ਰਾਜ ਤੇ ਰੰਗ-ਰਲੀਆਂ-
Power, pleasure, and the vast expanse of Maya
ਇਨਤੇਕਹਹੁਕਵਨਛੁਟਕਾਰ॥
ਦੱਸੋ, ਇਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਕਿਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ (ਮੋਹ ਪਾਇਆਂ) ਸਦਾ ਲਈ (ਮਾਇਆ ਤੋਂ) ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਮਿਲ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ?
who has ever escaped from these?
ਅਸੁਹਸਤੀਰਥਅਸਵਾਰੀ॥
ਘੋੜੇ, ਹਾਥੀ, ਰਥਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਵਾਰੀ ਕਰਨੀ-
Horses, elephants, chariots and pageantry
ਝੂਠਾਡੰਫੁਝੂਠੁਪਾਸਾਰੀ॥
ਇਹ ਸਭ ਝੂਠਾ ਦਿਖਾਵਾ ਹੈ, ਇਹ ਅਡੰਬਰ ਰਚਾਉਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਭੀ ਬਿਨਸਨਹਾਰ ਹੈ।
- false shows and false displays.
ਜਿਨਿਦੀਏਤਿਸੁਬੁਝੈਨਬਿਗਾਨਾ॥
ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਛਾਣਦਾ ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ,
The fool does not acknowledge the One who gave this;
ਨਾਮੁਬਿਸਾਰਿਨਾਨਕਪਛੁਤਾਨਾ॥੫॥
ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਭੁਲਾ ਕੇ, ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ਼ਰ) ਪਛੁਤਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
forgetting the Naam, O Nanak, he will repent in the end. ||5||
ਗੁਰਕੀਮਤਿਤੂੰਲੇਹਿਇਆਨੇ॥
ਹੇ ਅੰਞਾਣ! ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਤਿ ਲੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਤੇ ਤੁਰ)
Take the Guru's advice, you ignorant fool;
ਭਗਤਿਬਿਨਾਬਹੁਡੂਬੇਸਿਆਨੇ॥
ਬੜੇ ਸਿਆਣੇ ਸਿਆਣੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਭੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ) ਡੁੱਬ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
without devotion, even the clever have drowned.
ਹਰਿਕੀਭਗਤਿਕਰਹੁਮਨਮੀਤ॥
ਹੇ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਮਨ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰ,
Worship the Lord with heart-felt devotion, my friend;
ਨਿਰਮਲੁਹੋਇਤੁਮੑਾਰੋਚੀਤ॥
ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਸੁਰਤ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੋਵੇਗੀ।
your consciousness shall become pure.
ਚਰਨਕਮਲਰਾਖਹੁਮਨਮਾਹਿ॥
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਕਮਲ (ਵਰਗੇ ਸੋਹਣੇ) ਚਰਨ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰੋ ਰੱਖ,
