ਬ੍ਰਹਮਗਿਆਨੀਆਪਿਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੁ॥
ਉਹ (ਤਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਤੱਖ) ਆਪ ਹੀ ਰੱਬ ਹੈ।
The God-conscious being is himself the Formless Lord.
ਬ੍ਰਹਮਗਿਆਨੀਕੀਸੋਭਾਬ੍ਰਹਮਗਿਆਨੀਬਨੀ॥
ਬ੍ਰਹਮਗਿਆਨੀ ਦੀ ਮਹਿਮਾ (ਕੋਈ) ਬ੍ਰਹਮਗਿਆਨੀ ਹੀ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ;
The glory of the God-conscious being belongs to the God-conscious being alone.
ਨਾਨਕਬ੍ਰਹਮਗਿਆਨੀਸਰਬਕਾਧਨੀ॥੮॥੮॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਬ੍ਰਹਮਗਿਆਨੀ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਹੈ ॥੮॥੮॥
O Nanak, the God-conscious being is the Lord of all. ||8||8||

Shalok:
ਉਰਿਧਾਰੈਜੋਅੰਤਰਿਨਾਮੁ॥
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਟਿਕਾ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ,
One who enshrines the Naam within the heart,
ਸਰਬਮੈਪੇਖੈਭਗਵਾਨੁ॥
ਅਤੇ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਨੂੰ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹੈ,
who sees the Lord God in all,
ਨਿਮਖਨਿਮਖਠਾਕੁਰਨਮਸਕਾਰੈ॥
ਜੋ ਪਲ ਪਲ ਆਪਣੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਜੁਹਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ;
who, each and every moment, bows in reverence to the Lord Master
ਨਾਨਕਓਹੁਅਪਰਸੁਸਗਲਨਿਸਤਾਰੈ॥੧॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ (ਅਸਲੀ) ਅਪਰਸ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਤਾਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
- O Nanak, such a one is the true 'touch-nothing Saint', who emancipates everyone. ||1||
ਅਸਟਪਦੀ॥
Ashtapadee:
ਮਿਥਿਆਨਾਹੀਰਸਨਾਪਰਸ॥
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜੀਭ ਨਾਲ ਝੂਠ ਨੂੰ ਛੋਹਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੇਂਦਾ,
One whose tongue does not touch falsehood;
ਮਨਮਹਿਪ੍ਰੀਤਿਨਿਰੰਜਨਦਰਸ॥
ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਦੇ ਦੀਦਾਰ ਦੀ ਤਾਂਘ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ;
whose mind is filled with love for the Blessed Vision of the Pure Lord,
ਪਰਤ੍ਰਿਅਰੂਪੁਨਪੇਖੈਨੇਤ੍ਰ॥
ਜੋ ਪਰਾਈ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਦੇ ਹੁਸਨ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਤੱਕਦਾ,
whose eyes do not gaze upon the beauty of others' wives,
ਸਾਧਕੀਟਹਲਸੰਤਸੰਗਿਹੇਤ॥
ਭਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਟਹਲ (ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ) ਤੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ (ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ);
who serves the Holy and loves the Saints' Congregation,
ਕਰਨਨਸੁਨੈਕਾਹੂਕੀਨਿੰਦਾ॥
ਜੋ ਕੰਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੀ ਭੀ ਨਿੰਦਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੁਣਦਾ,
whose ears do not listen to slander against anyone,
ਸਭਤੇਜਾਨੈਆਪਸਕਉਮੰਦਾ॥
(ਸਗੋਂ) ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਮਾੜਾ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ;
who deems himself to be the worst of all,
ਗੁਰਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿਬਿਖਿਆਪਰਹਰੈ॥
ਜੋ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਦਾ ਸਦਕਾ ਮਾਇਆ (ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ) ਪਰੇ ਹਟਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
who, by Guru's Grace, renounces corruption,
ਮਨਕੀਬਾਸਨਾਮਨਤੇਟਰੈ॥
ਤੇ ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਵਾਸਨਾ ਮਨ ਤੋਂ ਟਲ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ;
who banishes the mind's evil desires from his mind,
ਇੰਦ੍ਰੀਜਿਤਪੰਚਦੋਖਤੇਰਹਤ॥
ਜੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਗਿਆਨ-ਇੰਦ੍ਰਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਖ ਕੇ ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕ ਪੰਜੇ ਹੀ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
who conquers his sexual instincts and is free of the five sinful passions
ਨਾਨਕਕੋਟਿਮਧੇਕੋਐਸਾਅਪਰਸੁ॥੧॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਕਰੋੜਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਬੰਦਾ "ਅਪਰਸ" (ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ) ॥੧॥
- O Nanak, among millions, there is scarcely one such 'touch-nothing Saint'. ||1||
ਬੈਸਨੋਸੋਜਿਸੁਊਪਰਿਸੁਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ॥
ਜਿਸ ਉਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਤ੍ਰੁਠਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਹੈ ਅਸਲੀ ਵੈਸ਼ਨੋ,
The true Vaishnaav, the devotee of Vishnu, is the one with whom God is thoroughly pleased.
ਬਿਸਨਕੀਮਾਇਆਤੇਹੋਇਭਿੰਨ॥
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਅਸਰ ਤੋਂ ਬੇ-ਦਾਗ਼ ਹੈ।
He dwells apart from Maya.
ਕਰਮਕਰਤਹੋਵੈਨਿਹਕਰਮ॥
ਜੋ (ਧਰਮ ਦੇ) ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਕੰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਫਲ ਦੀ ਇੱਛਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਰੱਖਦਾ,
Performing good deeds, he does not seek rewards.
ਤਿਸੁਬੈਸਨੋਕਾਨਿਰਮਲਧਰਮੁ॥
ਉਸ ਵੈਸ਼ਨੋ ਦਾ ਧਰਮ (ਭੀ) ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੈ ।
Spotlessly pure is the religion of such a Vaishnaav;
ਕਾਹੂਫਲਕੀਇਛਾਨਹੀਬਾਛੈ॥
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਕਿਸੇ ਭੀ ਫਲ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਹਸ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ;
he has no desire for the fruits of his labors.
ਕੇਵਲਭਗਤਿਕੀਰਤਨਸੰਗਿਰਾਚੈ॥
ਨਿਰਾ ਭਗਤੀ ਤੇ ਕੀਰਤਨ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
He is absorbed in devotional worship and the singing of Kirtan, the songs of the Lord's Glory.
ਮਨਤਨਅੰਤਰਿਸਿਮਰਨਗੋਪਾਲ॥
ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਤਨ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਵੱਸ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ,
Within his mind and body, he meditates in remembrance on the Lord of the Universe.
ਸਭਊਪਰਿਹੋਵਤਕਿਰਪਾਲ॥
ਜੋ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਦਇਆ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
He is kind to all creatures.
ਆਪਿਦ੍ਰਿੜੈਅਵਰਹਨਾਮੁਜਪਾਵੈ॥
ਜੋ ਆਪ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ) ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
He holds fast to the Naam, and inspires others to chant it.
ਨਾਨਕਓਹੁਬੈਸਨੋਪਰਮਗਤਿਪਾਵੈ॥੨॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਵੈਸ਼ਨੋ ਉੱਚਾ ਦਰਜਾ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
O Nanak, such a Vaishnaav obtains the supreme status. ||2||
ਭਗਉਤੀਭਗਵੰਤਭਗਤਿਕਾਰੰਗੁ॥
ਭਗਵਾਨ ਦਾ (ਅਸਲੀ) ਉਪਾਸ਼ਕ (ਉਹ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ) ਭਗਵਾਨ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਹੈ,
The true Bhagaautee, the devotee of Adi Shakti, loves the devotional worship of God.
ਸਗਲਤਿਆਗੈਦੁਸਟਕਾਸੰਗੁ॥
ਤੇ ਜੋ ਸਭ ਮੰਦ-ਕਰਮੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਸੁਹਬਤ ਛੱਡ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ;
He forsakes the company of all wicked people.
ਮਨਤੇਬਿਨਸੈਸਗਲਾਭਰਮੁ॥
ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਹਰ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਵਹਿਮ ਮਿਟ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
All doubts are removed from his mind.
ਕਰਿਪੂਜੈਸਗਲਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ॥
ਜੋ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਨੂੰ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਜਾਣ ਕੇ ਪੂਜਦਾ ਹੈ,
He performs devotional service to the Supreme Lord God in all.
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿਪਾਪਾਮਲੁਖੋਵੈ॥
ਜੋ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਪਾਪਾਂ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ (ਮਨ ਤੋਂ) ਦੂਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
In the Company of the Holy, the filth of sin is washed away.
ਤਿਸੁਭਗਉਤੀਕੀਮਤਿਊਤਮਹੋਵੈ॥
ਉਸ ਭਗਉਤੀ ਦੀ ਮਤਿ ਉੱਚੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
The wisdom of such a Bhagaautee becomes supreme.
ਭਗਵੰਤਕੀਟਹਲਕਰੈਨਿਤਨੀਤਿ॥
ਜੋ ਨਿੱਤ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
He constantly performs the service of the Supreme Lord God.
ਮਨੁਤਨੁਅਰਪੈਬਿਸਨਪਰੀਤਿ॥
ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਿਆਰ ਤੋਂ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨ ਤੇ ਤਨ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ;
He dedicates his mind and body to the Love of God.
ਹਰਿਕੇਚਰਨਹਿਰਦੈਬਸਾਵੈ॥
ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨ (ਸਦਾ ਆਪਣੇ) ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
The Lotus Feet of the Lord abide in his heart.
ਨਾਨਕਐਸਾਭਗਉਤੀਭਗਵੰਤਕਉਪਾਵੈ॥੩॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਅਜੇਹਾ ਭਗਉਤੀ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਨੂੰ ਲੱਭ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
O Nanak, such a Bhagaautee attains the Lord God. ||3||
ਸੋਪੰਡਿਤੁਜੋਮਨੁਪਰਬੋਧੈ॥
(ਅਸਲੀ) ਪੰਡਿਤ ਉਹ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
He is a true Pandit, a religious scholar, who instructs his own mind.
ਰਾਮਨਾਮੁਆਤਮਮਹਿਸੋਧੈ॥
ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਭਾਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
He searches for the Lord's Name within his own soul.
ਰਾਮਨਾਮਸਾਰੁਰਸੁਪੀਵੈ॥
ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਮਿੱਠਾ ਸੁਆਦ ਚੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ,
He drinks in the Exquisite Nectar of the Lord's Name.
ਉਸੁਪੰਡਿਤਕੈਉਪਦੇਸਿਜਗੁਜੀਵੈ॥
ਉਸ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਨਾਲ (ਸਾਰਾ) ਸੰਸਾਰ ਰੂਹਾਨੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
By that Pandit's teachings, the world lives.
ਹਰਿਕੀਕਥਾਹਿਰਦੈਬਸਾਵੈ॥
ਜੋ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ (ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ) ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
He implants the Sermon of the Lord in his heart.
ਸੋਪੰਡਿਤੁਫਿਰਿਜੋਨਿਨਆਵੈ॥
ਉਹ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਮੁੜ ਜਨਮ (ਮਰਨ) ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ।
Such a Pandit is not cast into the womb of reincarnation again.
ਬੇਦਪੁਰਾਨਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿਬੂਝੈਮੂਲ॥
ਜੋ ਵੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਣ ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤੀਆਂ (ਆਦਿਕ ਸਭ ਧਰਮ-ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ) ਦਾ ਮੁੱਢ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ) ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ,
He understands the fundamental essence of the Vedas, the Puraanas and the Simritees.
ਸੂਖਮਮਹਿਜਾਨੈਅਸਥੂਲੁ॥
ਜੋ ਇਹ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਜਗਤ ਅਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਹੀ ਆਸਰੇ ਹੈ;
In the unmanifest, he sees the manifest world to exist.
ਚਹੁਵਰਨਾਕਉਦੇਉਪਦੇਸੁ॥
ਜੋ (ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ, ਖਤ੍ਰੀ, ਵੈਸ਼, ਸ਼ੂਦਰ) ਚਾਰੇ ਹੀ ਜਾਤੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
He gives instruction to people of all castes and social classes.
ਨਾਨਕਉਸੁਪੰਡਿਤਕਉਸਦਾਅਦੇਸੁ॥੪॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ) ਉਸ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਅੱਗੇ ਅਸੀਂ ਸਦਾ ਸਿਰ ਨਿਵਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਾਂ ॥੪॥
O Nanak, to such a Pandit, I bow in salutation forever. ||4||
ਬੀਜਮੰਤ੍ਰੁਸਰਬਕੋਗਿਆਨੁ॥
ਨਾਮ (ਹੋਰ ਸਭ ਮੰਤ੍ਰਾਂ ਦਾ) ਮੁੱਢ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਭ ਦਾ ਗਿਆਨ (ਦਾਤਾ) ਹੈ,
The Beej Mantra, the Seed Mantra, is spiritual wisdom for everyone.
ਚਹੁਵਰਨਾਮਹਿਜਪੈਕੋਊਨਾਮੁ॥
(ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ, ਖਤ੍ਰੀ, ਵੈਸ਼, ਸ਼ੂਦਰ) ਚਾਰੇ ਹੀ ਜਾਤੀਆਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ) ਨਾਮ ਜਪ (ਕੇ ਵੇਖ ਲਏ)
Anyone, from any class, may chant the Naam.
ਜੋਜੋਜਪੈਤਿਸਕੀਗਤਿਹੋਇ॥
ਜੋ ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਉੱਚੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ,
Whoever chants it, is emancipated.
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿਪਾਵੈਜਨੁਕੋਇ॥
(ਪਰ) ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ (ਰਹਿ ਕੇ) (ਇਸ ਨੂੰ) ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
And yet, rare are those who attain it, in the Company of the Holy.
ਕਰਿਕਿਰਪਾਅੰਤਰਿਉਰਧਾਰੈ॥
(ਜੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ) ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਉਸ ਦੇ) ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ (ਨਾਮ) ਟਿਕਾ ਦੇਵੇ,
By His Grace, He enshrines it within.
ਪਸੁਪ੍ਰੇਤਮੁਘਦਪਾਥਰਕਉਤਾਰੈ॥
ਪਸ਼ੂ, ਚੰਦਰੀ ਰੂਹ, ਮੂਰਖ, ਪੱਥਰ (-ਦਿਲ) (ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਹੋਵੇ ਸਭ) ਨੂੰ (ਨਾਮ) ਤਾਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
Even beasts, ghosts and the stone-hearted are saved.
ਸਰਬਰੋਗਕਾਅਉਖਦੁਨਾਮੁ॥
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਾਰੇ ਰੋਗਾਂ ਦੀ ਦਵਾਈ ਹੈ,
The Naam is the panacea, the remedy to cure all ills.
ਕਲਿਆਣਰੂਪਮੰਗਲਗੁਣਗਾਮ॥
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਉਣੇ ਚੰਗੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਤੇ ਸੁਖ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਹੈ।
Singing the Glory of God is the embodiment of bliss and emancipation.
ਕਾਹੂਜੁਗਤਿਕਿਤੈਨਪਾਈਐਧਰਮਿ॥
(ਪਰ ਇਹ ਨਾਮ ਹੋਰ) ਕਿਸੇ ਢੰਗ ਨਾਲ ਜਾਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਰਸਮ ਰਿਵਾਜ ਦੇ ਕਰਨ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ;
It cannot be obtained by any religious rituals.
ਨਾਨਕਤਿਸੁਮਿਲੈਜਿਸੁਲਿਖਿਆਧੁਰਿਕਰਮਿ॥੫॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਇਹ ਨਾਮ) ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ (ਦੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਤੇ) ਧੁਰੋਂ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ) ਮੇਹਰ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
O Nanak, he alone obtains it, whose karma is so pre-ordained. ||5||
ਜਿਸਕੈਮਨਿਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮਕਾਨਿਵਾਸੁ॥
