ਅਨਿਕਜਤਨਕਰਿਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਨਾਧ੍ਰਾਪੈ॥
(ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ਦੇ) ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਜਤਨ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ) ਤ੍ਰਿਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਮੁੱਕਦੀ।
You try all sorts of things, but your thirst is still not satisfied.
ਭੇਖਅਨੇਕਅਗਨਿਨਹੀਬੁਝੈ॥
ਅਨੇਕਾਂ (ਧਾਰਮਿਕ) ਭੇਖ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ (ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦੀ) ਅੱਗ ਨਹੀਂ ਬੁੱਝਦੀ,
Wearing various religious robes, the fire is not extinguished.
ਕੋਟਿਉਪਾਵਦਰਗਹਨਹੀਸਿਝੈ॥
(ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹੇ) ਕ੍ਰੋੜਾਂ ਤਰੀਕੇ (ਵਰਤਿਆਂ ਭੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ) ਦਰਗਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਰਖ਼ਰੂ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਈਦਾ।
Even making millions of efforts, you shall not be accepted in the Court of the Lord.
ਛੂਟਸਿਨਾਹੀਊਭਪਇਆਲਿ॥
(ਇਹਨਾਂ ਜਤਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ) ਜੀਵ ਚਾਹੇ ਅਕਾਸ਼ ਤੇ ਚੜ੍ਹ ਜਾਏ, ਚਾਹੇ ਪਤਾਲ ਵਿਚ ਲੁਕ ਜਾਏ,
You cannot escape to the heavens, or to the nether regions,
ਮੋਹਿਬਿਆਪਹਿਮਾਇਆਜਾਲਿ॥
(ਮਾਇਆ ਤੋਂ) ਬਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ, (ਸਗੋਂ) ਜੀਵ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਜਾਲ ਵਿਚ ਤੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਦੇ ਹਨ।
if you are entangled in emotional attachment and the net of Maya.
ਅਵਰਕਰਤੂਤਿਸਗਲੀਜਮੁਡਾਨੈ॥
(ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਹੋਰ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਕਰਤੂਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਜਮਰਾਜ ਡੰਨ ਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
All other efforts are punished by the Messenger of Death,
ਗੋਵਿੰਦਭਜਨਬਿਨੁਤਿਲੁਨਹੀਮਾਨੈ॥
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਭਜਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾਂ ਰਤਾ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਤੀਜਦਾ।
which accepts nothing at all, except meditation on the Lord of the Universe.
ਹਰਿਕਾਨਾਮੁਜਪਤਦੁਖੁਜਾਇ॥
(ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਉਚਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਦੁੱਖ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦਿਆਂ) ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ)
Chanting the Name of the Lord, sorrow is dispelled.
ਨਾਨਕਬੋਲੈਸਹਜਿਸੁਭਾਇ॥੪॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ) ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਨਾਲ (ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ) ਉਚਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
O Nanak, chant it with intuitive ease. ||4||
ਚਾਰਿਪਦਾਰਥਜੇਕੋਮਾਗੈ॥
ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਧਰਮ, ਅਰਥ, ਕਾਮ, ਮੋਖ) ਚਾਰ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦਾ ਲੋੜਵੰਦ ਹੋਵੇ,
One who prays for the four cardinal blessings
ਸਾਧਜਨਾਕੀਸੇਵਾਲਾਗੈ॥
(ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਵਿਚ ਲੱਗੇ।
should commit himself to the service of the Saints.
ਜੇਕੋਆਪੁਨਾਦੂਖੁਮਿਟਾਵੈ॥
ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣਾ ਦੁੱਖ ਮਿਟਾਣਾ ਚਾਹੇ,
If you wish to erase your sorrows,
ਹਰਿਹਰਿਨਾਮੁਰਿਦੈਸਦਗਾਵੈ॥
ਤਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਦਾ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਸਿਮਰੇ।
sing the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, within your heart.
ਜੇਕੋਅਪੁਨੀਸੋਭਾਲੋਰੈ॥
ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੀ ਸੋਭਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੋਵੇ ਹੈ,
If you long for honor for yourself,
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿਇਹਹਉਮੈਛੋਰੈ॥
ਤਾਂ ਸਤਸੰਗ ਵਿਚ (ਰਹਿ ਕੇ) ਇਸ ਹਉਮੈ ਦਾ ਤਿਆਗ ਕਰੇ।
then renounce your ego in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy.
ਜੇਕੋਜਨਮਮਰਣਤੇਡਰੈ॥
ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ (ਦੇ ਗੇੜ) ਤੋਂ ਡਰਦਾ ਹੋਵੇ,
If you fear the cycle of birth and death,
ਸਾਧਜਨਾਕੀਸਰਨੀਪਰੈ॥
ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਸੰਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਚਰਨੀਂ ਲੱਗੇ।
then seek the Sanctuary of the Holy.
ਜਿਸੁਜਨਕਉਪ੍ਰਭਦਰਸਪਿਆਸਾ॥
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦੀਦਾਰ ਦੀ ਤਾਂਘ ਹੈ,
Those who thirst for the Blessed Vision of God's Darshan
ਨਾਨਕਤਾਕੈਬਲਿਬਲਿਜਾਸਾ॥੫॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ ਕਿ) ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਕੇ ਜਾਵਾਂ ॥੫॥
- Nanak is a sacrifice, a sacrifice to them. ||5||
ਸਗਲਪੁਰਖਮਹਿਪੁਰਖੁਪ੍ਰਧਾਨੁ॥
(ਉਹ) ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਾਰੇ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਵੱਡਾ ਹੈ,
Among all persons, the supreme person is the one
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿਜਾਕਾਮਿਟੈਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ॥
ਸਤ ਸੰਗ ਵਿਚ (ਰਹਿ ਕੇ) ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਮਿਟ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
who gives up his egotistical pride in the Company of the Holy.
ਆਪਸਕਉਜੋਜਾਣੈਨੀਚਾ॥
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ (ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ) ਮੰਦ-ਕਰਮੀ ਖ਼ਿਆਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
One who sees himself as lowly,
ਸੋਊਗਨੀਐਸਭਤੇਊਚਾ॥
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਚੰਗਾ ਸਮਝਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ।
shall be accounted as the highest of all.
ਜਾਕਾਮਨੁਹੋਇਸਗਲਕੀਰੀਨਾ॥
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਧੂੜ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਜੋ ਸਭ ਨਾਲ ਗਰੀਬੀ-ਸੁਭਾਉ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਹੈ)
One whose mind is the dust of all,
ਹਰਿਹਰਿਨਾਮੁਤਿਨਿਘਟਿਘਟਿਚੀਨਾ॥
ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਹਰੇਕ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸੱਤਾ ਪਛਾਣ ਲਈ ਹੈ।
recognizes the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, in each and every heart.
ਮਨਅਪੁਨੇਤੇਬੁਰਾਮਿਟਾਨਾ॥
ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਬੁਰਾਈ ਮਿਟਾ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੈ,
One who eradicates cruelty from within his own mind,
ਪੇਖੈਸਗਲਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿਸਾਜਨਾ॥
ਉਹ ਸਾਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ (ਦੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ) ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹੈ।
looks upon all the world as his friend.
ਸੂਖਦੂਖਜਨਸਮਦ੍ਰਿਸਟੇਤਾ॥
(ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹੇ) ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸੁਖਾਂ ਤੇ ਦੁਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਕੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਸਮਝਦੇ ਹਨ,
One who looks upon pleasure and pain as one and the same,
ਨਾਨਕਪਾਪਪੁੰਨਨਹੀਲੇਪਾ॥੬॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਤਾਹੀਏਂ) ਪਾਪ ਤੇ ਪੁੰਨ ਦਾ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਅਸਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ (ਭਾਵ, ਨਾਹ ਕੋਈ ਮੰਦਾ ਕਰਮ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਫਸਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਨਾਹ ਹੀ ਸੁਰਗ ਆਦਿਕ ਦਾ ਲਾਲਚ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਜਾਂ ਦੁੱਖ ਕਲੇਸ਼ ਤੋਂ ਡਰ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਪੁੰਨ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਸੁਭਾਵ ਹੀ ਨੇਕੀ ਕਰਨਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ) ॥੬॥
O Nanak, is not affected by sin or virtue. ||6||
ਨਿਰਧਨਕਉਧਨੁਤੇਰੋਨਾਉ॥
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ) ਕੰਗਾਲ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਧਨ ਹੈ,
To the poor, Your Name is wealth.
ਨਿਥਾਵੇਕਉਨਾਉਤੇਰਾਥਾਉ॥
ਨਿਆਸਰੇ ਨੂੰ ਤੇਰਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੈ।
To the homeless, Your Name is home.
ਨਿਮਾਨੇਕਉਪ੍ਰਭਤੇਰੋਮਾਨੁ॥
ਨਿਮਾਣੇ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਤੇਰਾ (ਨਾਮ), ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਆਦਰ ਮਾਣ ਹੈ,
To the dishonored, You, O God, are honor.
ਸਗਲਘਟਾਕਉਦੇਵਹੁਦਾਨੁ॥
ਤੂੰ ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦਾਤਾਂ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ।
To all, You are the Giver of gifts.
ਕਰਨਕਰਾਵਨਹਾਰਸੁਆਮੀ॥
ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਤੇ, ਆਪ ਹੀ ਕਰਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ।
O Creator Lord, Cause of causes, O Lord and Master,
ਸਗਲਘਟਾਕੇਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ॥
ਹੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ! ਹੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਦਿਲ ਦੀ ਜਾਣਨ ਵਾਲੇ!
Inner-knower, Searcher of all hearts:
ਅਪਨੀਗਤਿਮਿਤਿਜਾਨਹੁਆਪੇ॥
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਹਾਲਤ ਤੇ ਆਪਣੀ (ਵਡਿਆਈ ਦੀ) ਮਰਯਾਦਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈਂ;
You alone know Your own condition and state.
ਆਪਨਸੰਗਿਆਪਿਪ੍ਰਭਰਾਤੇ॥
ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਵਿਚ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਮਗਨ ਹੈਂ।
You Yourself, God, are imbued with Yourself.
ਤੁਮੑਰੀਉਸਤਤਿਤੁਮਤੇਹੋਇ॥
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!) ਤੇਰੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਤੈਥੋਂ ਹੀ (ਬਿਆਨ) ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ,
You alone can celebrate Your Praises.
ਨਾਨਕਅਵਰੁਨਜਾਨਸਿਕੋਇ॥੭॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ, ਕਿ) ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਤੇਰੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦਾ ॥੭॥
O Nanak, no one else knows. ||7||
ਸਰਬਧਰਮਮਹਿਸ੍ਰੇਸਟਧਰਮੁ॥
(ਹੇ ਮਨ!) ਇਹ ਧਰਮ ਸਾਰੇ ਧਰਮਾਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਚੰਗਾ ਹੈ-
Of all religions, the best religion
ਹਰਿਕੋਨਾਮੁਜਪਿਨਿਰਮਲਕਰਮੁ॥
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪ (ਤੇ) ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਆਚਰਣ (ਬਣਾ)।
is to chant the Name of the Lord and maintain pure conduct.
ਸਗਲਕ੍ਰਿਆਮਹਿਊਤਮਕਿਰਿਆ॥
ਇਹ ਕੰਮ ਹੋਰ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਰਸਮਾਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਉੱਤਮ ਹੈ-
Of all religious rituals, the most sublime ritual
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿਦੁਰਮਤਿਮਲੁਹਿਰਿਆ॥
ਸਤਸੰਗ ਵਿਚ (ਰਹਿ ਕੇ) ਭੈੜੀ ਮਤਿ (ਰੂਪ) ਮੈਲ ਦੂਰ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਏ।
is to erase the filth of the dirty mind in the Company of the Holy.
ਸਗਲਉਦਮਮਹਿਉਦਮੁਭਲਾ॥
ਇਹ ਉੱਦਮ (ਹੋਰ) ਸਾਰੇ ਉੱਦਮਾਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਭਲਾ ਹੈ-
Of all efforts, the best effort
ਹਰਿਕਾਨਾਮੁਜਪਹੁਜੀਅਸਦਾ॥
ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਸਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪ।
is to chant the Name of the Lord in the heart, forever.
ਸਗਲਬਾਨੀਮਹਿਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਬਾਨੀ॥
(ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਜਸ ਦੀ) ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਹੋਰ ਸਭ ਬਾਣੀਆਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਹੈ-
Of all speech, the most ambrosial speech
ਹਰਿਕੋਜਸੁਸੁਨਿਰਸਨਬਖਾਨੀ॥
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਜਸ (ਕੰਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ) ਸੁਣ (ਤੇ) ਜੀਭ ਨਾਲ ਬੋਲ।
is to hear the Lord's Praise and chant it with the tongue.
ਸਗਲਥਾਨਤੇਓਹੁਊਤਮਥਾਨੁ॥
ਉਹ (ਹਿਰਦਾ-ਰੂਪ) ਥਾਂ ਹੋਰ ਸਾਰੇ (ਤੀਰਥ) ਅਸਥਾਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੈ-
Of all places, the most sublime place,
ਨਾਨਕਜਿਹਘਟਿਵਸੈਹਰਿਨਾਮੁ॥੮॥੩॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਸ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੮॥੩॥
O Nanak, is that heart in which the Name of the Lord abides. ||8||3||
ਸਲੋਕੁ॥
Shalok:
ਨਿਰਗੁਨੀਆਰਇਆਨਿਆਸੋਪ੍ਰਭੁਸਦਾਸਮਾਲਿ॥
ਹੇ ਅੰਞਾਣ! ਹੇ ਗੁਣ-ਹੀਨ (ਮਨੁੱਖ)! ਉਸ ਮਾਲਕ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਯਾਦ ਕਰ।
You worthless, ignorant fool - dwell upon God forever.
ਜਿਨਿਕੀਆਤਿਸੁਚੀਤਿਰਖੁਨਾਨਕਨਿਬਹੀਨਾਲਿ॥੧॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਚਿੱਤ ਵਿਚ (ਪ੍ਰੋ) ਰੱਖ, ਉਹੀ (ਤੇਰੇ) ਨਾਲ ਸਾਥ ਨਿਬਾਹੇਗਾ ॥੧॥
Cherish in your consciousness the One who created you; O Nanak, He alone shall go along with you. ||1||
ਅਸਟਪਦੀ॥
Ashtapadee:
ਰਮਈਆਕੇਗੁਨਚੇਤਿਪਰਾਨੀ॥
ਹੇ ਜੀਵ! ਸੋਹਣੇ ਰਾਮ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਯਾਦ ਕਰ,
Think of the Glory of the All-pervading Lord, O mortal;
ਕਵਨਮੂਲਤੇਕਵਨਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਾਨੀ॥
(ਵੇਖ) ਕਿਸ ਮੁੱਢ ਤੋਂ (ਤੈਨੂੰ) ਕੇਹਾ (ਸੋਹਣਾ ਬਣਾ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਨੇ) ਵਿਖਾਇਆ ਹੈ।
what is your origin, and what is your appearance?
ਜਿਨਿਤੂੰਸਾਜਿਸਵਾਰਿਸੀਗਾਰਿਆ॥
ਜਿਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਬਣਾ ਸਵਾਰ ਕੇ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ,
He who fashioned, adorned and decorated you
ਗਰਭਅਗਨਿਮਹਿਜਿਨਹਿਉਬਾਰਿਆ॥
ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਪੇਟ ਦੀ ਅੱਗ ਵਿਚ (ਭੀ) ਬਚਾਇਆ;
in the fire of the womb, He preserved you.
ਬਾਰਬਿਵਸਥਾਤੁਝਹਿਪਿਆਰੈਦੂਧ॥
ਜੋ ਬਾਲ ਉਮਰ ਵਿਚ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਦੁੱਧ ਪਿਆਲਦਾ ਹੈ,
In your infancy, He gave you milk to drink.
ਭਰਿਜੋਬਨਭੋਜਨਸੁਖਸੂਧ॥
ਭਰ-ਜੁਆਨੀ ਵਿਚ ਭੋਜਨ ਤੇ ਸੁਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ (ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ);
In the flower of your youth, He gave you food, pleasure and understanding.
ਬਿਰਧਿਭਇਆਊਪਰਿਸਾਕਸੈਨ॥
(ਜਦੋਂ ਤੂੰ) ਬੁੱਢਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ (ਤਾਂ) ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਨ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਕ-ਸੱਜਣ (ਤਿਆਰ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ)
As you grow old, family and friends
