ਹਰਿਕਾਨਾਮੁਜਨਕਉਭੋਗਜੋਗ॥
(ਤਿਆਗੀ ਦਾ) ਜੋਗ (-ਸਾਧਨ) ਤੇ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਸਤੀ ਦਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਭੋਗ ਭਗਤ ਜਨ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਹੀ) ਹੈ,
The Name of the Lord is the enjoyment and Yoga of His servants.
ਹਰਿਨਾਮੁਜਪਤਕਛੁਨਾਹਿਬਿਓਗੁ॥
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦਿਆਂ (ਉਸ ਨੂੰ) ਕੋਈ ਦੁੱਖ ਕਲੇਸ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ।
Chanting the Lord's Name, there is no separation from Him.
ਜਨੁਰਾਤਾਹਰਿਨਾਮਕੀਸੇਵਾ॥
(ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ) ਭਗਤ (ਸਦਾ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ (ਸਿਮਰਨ) ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ;
His servants are imbued with the service of the Lord's Name.
ਨਾਨਕਪੂਜੈਹਰਿਹਰਿਦੇਵਾ॥੬॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਭਗਤ ਸਦਾ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਦੇਵ ਨੂੰ ਪੂਜਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
O Nanak, worship the Lord, the Lord Divine, Har, Har. ||6||
ਹਰਿਹਰਿਜਨਕੈਮਾਲੁਖਜੀਨਾ॥
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਭਗਤ ਦੇ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਮਾਲ ਧਨ ਹੈ,
The Lord's Name, Har, Har, is the treasure of wealth of His servants.
ਹਰਿਧਨੁਜਨਕਉਆਪਿਪ੍ਰਭਿਦੀਨਾ॥
ਇਹ ਨਾਮ-ਰੂਪੀ ਧਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਆਪਣੇ ਭਗਤ ਨੂੰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ।
The treasure of the Lord has been bestowed on His servants by God Himself.
ਹਰਿਹਰਿਜਨਕੈਓਟਸਤਾਣੀ॥
ਭਗਤ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਹੀ) ਤਕੜਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੈ,
The Lord, Har, Har is the All-powerful Protection of His servants.
ਹਰਿਪ੍ਰਤਾਪਿਜਨਅਵਰਨਜਾਣੀ॥
ਭਗਤਾਂ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਤਾਪ ਨਾਲ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਆਸਰੇ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਤੱਕਿਆ।
His servants know no other than the Lord's Magnificence.
ਓਤਿਪੋਤਿਜਨਹਰਿਰਸਿਰਾਤੇ॥
ਭਗਤ ਜਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ ਵਿਚ ਪੂਰੇ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਭਿੱਜੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ,
Through and through, His servants are imbued with the Lord's Love.
ਸੁੰਨਸਮਾਧਿਨਾਮਰਸਮਾਤੇ॥
(ਅਤੇ) ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ ਦੇ ਮੱਤੇ ਹੋਏ (ਮਨ ਦਾ ਉਹ) ਟਿਕਾਉ (ਮਾਣਦੇ ਹਨ) ਜਿਥੇ ਕੋਈ ਫੁਰਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ।
In deepest Samaadhi, they are intoxicated with the essence of the Naam.
ਆਠਪਹਰਜਨੁਹਰਿਹਰਿਜਪੈ॥
(ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ) ਭਗਤ ਅੱਠੇ ਪਹਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਜਪਦਾ ਹੈ,
Twenty-four hours a day, His servants chant Har, Har.
ਹਰਿਕਾਭਗਤੁਪ੍ਰਗਟੁਨਹੀਛਪੈ॥
(ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ) ਭਗਤ ਉੱਘਾ (ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ) ਲੁਕਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ।
The devotees of the Lord are known and respected; they do not hide in secrecy.
ਹਰਿਕੀਭਗਤਿਮੁਕਤਿਬਹੁਕਰੇ॥
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਦਿਵਾਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ;
Through devotion to the Lord, many have been liberated.
ਨਾਨਕਜਨਸੰਗਿਕੇਤੇਤਰੇ॥੭॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਭਗਤ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਕਈ ਹੋਰ (ਭੀ) ਤਰ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੭॥
O Nanak, along with His servants, many others are saved. ||7||
ਪਾਰਜਾਤੁਇਹੁਹਰਿਕੋਨਾਮੁ॥
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਨਾਮ (ਹੀ) "ਪਾਰਜਾਤ" ਰੁੱਖ ਹੈ,
This Elysian Tree of miraculous powers is the Name of the Lord.
ਕਾਮਧੇਨਹਰਿਹਰਿਗੁਣਗਾਮ॥
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਉਣੇ (ਹੀ ਇੱਛਾ-ਪੂਰਕ) "ਕਾਮਧੇਨ" ਹੈ।
The Khaamadhayn, the cow of miraculous powers, is the singing of the Glory of the Lord's Name, Har, Har.
ਸਭਤੇਊਤਮਹਰਿਕੀਕਥਾ॥
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀਆਂ (ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀਆਂ) ਗੱਲਾਂ (ਹੋਰ) ਸਭ (ਗੱਲਾਂ) ਤੋਂ ਚੰਗੀਆਂ ਹਨ,
Highest of all is the Lord's Speech.
ਨਾਮੁਸੁਨਤਦਰਦਦੁਖਲਥਾ॥
(ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ) ਨਾਮ ਸੁਣਿਆਂ ਸਾਰੇ ਦੁਖ ਦਰਦ ਲਹਿ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
Hearing the Naam, pain and sorrow are removed.
ਨਾਮਕੀਮਹਿਮਾਸੰਤਰਿਦਵਸੈ॥
(ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ) ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਸੰਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸਦੀ ਹੈ,
The Glory of the Naam abides in the hearts of His Saints.
ਸੰਤਪ੍ਰਤਾਪਿਦੁਰਤੁਸਭੁਨਸੈ॥
(ਅਤੇ) ਸੰਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਤਾਪ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਰਾ ਪਾਪ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
By the Saint's kind intervention, all guilt is dispelled.
ਸੰਤਕਾਸੰਗੁਵਡਭਾਗੀਪਾਈਐ॥
ਵੱਡੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਸੰਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ,
The Society of the Saints is obtained by great good fortune.
ਸੰਤਕੀਸੇਵਾਨਾਮੁਧਿਆਈਐ॥
(ਅਤੇ) ਸੰਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ (ਕੀਤਿਆਂ) (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ) ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰੀਦਾ ਹੈ।
Serving the Saint, one meditates on the Naam.
ਨਾਮਤੁਲਿਕਛੁਅਵਰੁਨਹੋਇ॥
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਬਰਾਬਰ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ (ਪਦਾਰਥ) ਨਹੀਂ,
There is nothing equal to the Naam.
ਨਾਨਕਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਨਾਮੁਪਾਵੈਜਨੁਕੋਇ॥੮॥੨॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨਾਮ (ਦੀ ਦਾਤਿ) ਲੱਭਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੮॥੨॥
O Nanak, rare are those, who, as Gurmukh, obtain the Naam. ||8||2||
ਸਲੋਕੁ॥
Shalok:
ਬਹੁਸਾਸਤ੍ਰਬਹੁਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤੀਪੇਖੇਸਰਬਢਢੋਲਿ॥
ਬਹੁਤ ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਤੇ ਬਹੁ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੀਆਂ, ਸਾਰੇ (ਅਸਾਂ) ਖੋਜ ਕੇ ਵੇਖੇ ਹਨ; (ਇਹ ਪੁਸਤਕ ਕਈ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਗਿਆਨ-ਚਰਚਾ ਤੇ ਕਈ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਤੇ ਭਾਈਚਾਰਕ ਰਸਮਾਂ ਸਿਖਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ)
The many Shaastras and the many Simritees - I have seen and searched through them all.
ਪੂਜਸਿਨਾਹੀਹਰਿਹਰੇਨਾਨਕਨਾਮਅਮੋਲ॥੧॥
(ਪਰ ਇਹ) ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਬਰਾਬਰੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦੇ। ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ) ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ॥੧॥
They are not equal to Har, Haray - O Nanak, the Lord's Invaluable Name. ||1||
ਅਸਟਪਦੀ॥
Ashtapadee:
ਜਾਪਤਾਪਗਿਆਨਸਭਿਧਿਆਨ॥
(ਜੇ ਕੋਈ) (ਵੇਦ-ਮੰਤ੍ਰਾਂ ਦੇ) ਜਾਪ ਕਰੇ, (ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਧੂਣੀਆਂ ਨਾਲ) ਤਪਾਏ, (ਹੋਰ) ਕਈ ਗਿਆਨ (ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਕਰੇ) ਤੇ (ਦੇਵਤਿਆਂ ਦੇ) ਧਿਆਨ ਧਰੇ,
Chanting, intense meditation, spiritual wisdom and all meditations;
ਖਟਸਾਸਤ੍ਰਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿਵਖਿਆਨ॥
ਛੇ ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰਾਂ ਤੇ ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਕਰੇ;
the six schools of philosophy and sermons on the scriptures;
ਜੋਗਅਭਿਆਸਕਰਮਧ੍ਰਮਕਿਰਿਆ॥
ਜੋਗ ਦੇ ਸਾਧਨ ਕਰੇ, ਕਰਮ ਕਾਂਡੀ ਧਰਮ ਦੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਆ ਕਰੇ,
the practice of Yoga and righteous conduct;
ਸਗਲਤਿਆਗਿਬਨਮਧੇਫਿਰਿਆ॥
(ਜਾਂ) ਸਾਰੇ (ਕੰਮ) ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਜੰਗਲਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਭਉਂਦਾ ਫਿਰੇ;
the renunciation of everything and wandering around in the wilderness;
ਅਨਿਕਪ੍ਰਕਾਰਕੀਏਬਹੁਜਤਨਾ॥
ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਕਿਸਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਬੜੇ ਜਤਨ ਕਰੇ,
the performance of all sorts of works;
ਪੁੰਨਦਾਨਹੋਮੇਬਹੁਰਤਨਾ॥
ਪੁੰਨਦਾਨ ਕਰੇ ਤੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰਾ ਘਿਉ ਹਵਨ ਕਰੇ,
donations to charities and offerings of jewels to fire;
ਸਰੀਰੁਕਟਾਇਹੋਮੈਕਰਿਰਾਤੀ॥
ਆਪਣੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਰਤੀ ਰਤੀ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਕਟਾਵੇ ਤੇ ਅੱਗ ਵਿਚ ਸਾੜ ਦੇਵੇ,
cutting the body apart and making the pieces into ceremonial fire offerings;
ਵਰਤਨੇਮਕਰੈਬਹੁਭਾਤੀ॥
ਕਈ ਕਿਸਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਵਰਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਬੰਧੇਜ ਕਰੇ;
keeping fasts and making vows of all sorts
ਨਹੀਤੁਲਿਰਾਮਨਾਮਬੀਚਾਰ॥
(ਪਰ ਇਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਹੀ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਦੇ ਬਰਾਬਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਨ,
- none of these are equal to the contemplation of the Name of the Lord,
ਨਾਨਕਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਨਾਮੁਜਪੀਐਇਕਬਾਰ॥੧॥
(ਭਾਵੇਂ) ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਇਹ ਨਾਮ ਇਕ ਵਾਰੀ (ਭੀ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਜਪਿਆ ਜਾਏ ॥੧॥
O Nanak, if, as Gurmukh, one chants the Naam, even once. ||1||
ਨਉਖੰਡਪ੍ਰਿਥਮੀਫਿਰੈਚਿਰੁਜੀਵੈ॥
(ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਸਾਰੀ ਧਰਤੀ ਤੇ ਫਿਰੇ, ਲੰਮੀ ਉਮਰ ਤਕ ਜੀਊਂਦਾ ਰਹੇ,
You may roam over the nine continents of the world and live a very long life;
ਮਹਾਉਦਾਸੁਤਪੀਸਰੁਥੀਵੈ॥
(ਜਗਤ ਵਲੋਂ) ਬਹੁਤ ਉਪਰਾਮ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਵੱਡਾ ਤਪੀ ਬਣ ਜਾਏ;
you may become a great ascetic and a master of disciplined meditation
ਅਗਨਿਮਾਹਿਹੋਮਤਪਰਾਨ॥
ਅੱਗ ਵਿਚ (ਆਪਣੀ) ਜਿੰਦ ਹਵਨ ਕਰ ਦੇਵੇ;
and burn yourself in fire;
ਕਨਿਕਅਸ੍ਵਹੈਵਰਭੂਮਿਦਾਨ॥
ਸੋਨਾ, ਘੋੜੇ, ਵਧੀਆ ਘੋੜੇ ਤੇ ਜ਼ਿਮੀਂ ਦਾਨ ਕਰੇ;
you may give away gold, horses, elephants and land;
ਨਿਉਲੀਕਰਮਕਰੈਬਹੁਆਸਨ॥
ਨਿਉਲੀ ਕਰਮ ਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੇ (ਯੋਗ) ਆਸਨ ਕਰੇ,
you may practice techniques of inner cleansing and all sorts of Yogic postures;
ਜੈਨਮਾਰਗਸੰਜਮਅਤਿਸਾਧਨ॥
ਜੈਨੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਰਸਤੇ (ਚੱਲ ਕੇ) ਬੜੇ ਕਠਿਨ ਸਾਧਨ ਤੇ ਸੰਜਮ ਕਰੇ;
you may adopt the self-mortifying ways of the Jains and great spiritual disciplines;
ਨਿਮਖਨਿਮਖਕਰਿਸਰੀਰੁਕਟਾਵੈ॥
ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਰਤਾ ਰਤਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਕਟਾ ਦੇਵੇ,
piece by piece, you may cut your body apart;
ਤਉਭੀਹਉਮੈਮੈਲੁਨਜਾਵੈ॥
ਤਾਂ ਭੀ (ਮਨ ਦੀ) ਹਉਮੈ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ।
but even so, the filth of your ego shall not depart.
ਹਰਿਕੇਨਾਮਸਮਸਰਿਕਛੁਨਾਹਿ॥
(ਅਜੇਹਾ) ਕੋਈ (ਉੱਦਮ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਬਰਾਬਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ;
There is nothing equal to the Name of the Lord.
ਨਾਨਕਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਨਾਮੁਜਪਤਗਤਿਪਾਹਿ॥੨॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਉੱਚੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੨॥
O Nanak, as Gurmukh, chant the Naam, and obtain salvation. ||2||
ਮਨਕਾਮਨਾਤੀਰਥਦੇਹਛੁਟੈ॥
(ਕਈ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀਆਂ ਦੇ) ਮਨ ਦੀ ਇੱਛਾ (ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਤੇ (ਜਾ ਕੇ) ਸਰੀਰਕ ਚੋਲਾ ਛੱਡਿਆ ਜਾਏ,
With your mind filled with desire, you may give up your body at a sacred shrine of pilgrimage;
ਗਰਬੁਗੁਮਾਨੁਨਮਨਤੇਹੁਟੈ॥
(ਪਰ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਭੀ) ਹਉਮੈ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਮਨ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਘਟਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ।
but even so, egotistical pride shall not be removed from your mind.
ਸੋਚਕਰੈਦਿਨਸੁਅਰੁਰਾਤਿ॥
(ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਦਿਨ ਤੇ ਰਾਤ (ਭਾਵ, ਸਦਾ) (ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਤੇ) ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰੇ,
You may practice cleansing day and night,
ਮਨਕੀਮੈਲੁਨਤਨਤੇਜਾਤਿ॥
(ਫੇਰ ਭੀ) ਮਨ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਸਰੀਰ ਧੋਤਿਆਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦੀ।
but the filth of your mind shall not leave your body.
ਇਸੁਦੇਹੀਕਉਬਹੁਸਾਧਨਾਕਰੈ॥
(ਜੇ) ਇਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ (ਸਾਧਨ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ) ਕਈ ਜਤਨ ਭੀ ਕਰੇ,
You may subject your body to all sorts of disciplines,
ਮਨਤੇਕਬਹੂਨਬਿਖਿਆਟਰੈ॥
(ਤਾਂ ਭੀ) ਕਦੇ ਮਨ ਤੋਂ ਮਾਇਆ (ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ) ਨਹੀਂ ਟਲਦਾ।
but your mind will never be rid of its corruption.
ਜਲਿਧੋਵੈਬਹੁਦੇਹਅਨੀਤਿ॥
(ਜੇ) ਇਸ ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਕਈ ਵਾਰ ਪਾਣੀ ਨਾਲ ਭੀ ਧੋਵੇ,
You may wash this transitory body with loads of water,
ਸੁਧਕਹਾਹੋਇਕਾਚੀਭੀਤਿ॥
(ਤਾਂ ਭੀ ਇਹ ਸਰੀਰ ਰੂਪੀ) ਕੱਚੀ ਕੰਧ ਕਿਥੇ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ?
but how can a wall of mud be washed clean?
ਮਨਹਰਿਕੇਨਾਮਕੀਮਹਿਮਾਊਚ॥
ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਬਹੁਤ ਵੱਡੀ ਹੈ।
O my mind, the Glorious Praise of the Name of the Lord is the highest;
ਨਾਨਕਨਾਮਿਉਧਰੇਪਤਿਤਬਹੁਮੂਚ॥੩॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਅਣਗਿਣਤ ਮੰਦ-ਕਰਮੀ ਜੀਵ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਬਚ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੩॥
O Nanak, the Naam has saved so many of the worst sinners. ||3||
ਬਹੁਤੁਸਿਆਣਪਜਮਕਾਭਉਬਿਆਪੈ॥
(ਜੀਵ ਦੀ) ਬਹੁਤੀ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ (ਦੇ ਕਾਰਣ) ਜਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਡਰ (ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ) ਆ ਦਬਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
Even with great cleverness, the fear of death clings to you.
