ਜਹਮਾਤਪਿਤਾਸੁਤਮੀਤਨਭਾਈ॥
ਜਿਥੇ ਮਾਂ, ਪਿਉ, ਪੁੱਤਰ, ਮਿੱਤ੍ਰ, ਭਰਾ ਕੋਈ (ਸਾਥੀ) ਨਹੀਂ (ਬਣਦਾ),
Where there is no mother, father, children, friends or siblings
ਮਨਊਹਾਨਾਮੁਤੇਰੈਸੰਗਿਸਹਾਈ॥
ਓਥੇ ਹੇ ਮਨ! (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ) ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਸਹੈਤਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ (ਹੈ)।
O my mind, there, only the Naam, the Name of the Lord, shall be with you as your help and support.
ਜਹਮਹਾਭਇਆਨਦੂਤਜਮਦਲੈ॥
ਜਿਥੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਡਰਾਉਣੇ ਜਮਦੂਤਾਂ ਦਾ ਦਲ ਹੈ,
Where the great and terrible Messenger of Death shall try to crush you,
ਤਹਕੇਵਲਨਾਮੁਸੰਗਿਤੇਰੈਚਲੈ॥
ਓਥੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
there, only the Naam shall go along with you.
ਜਹਮੁਸਕਲਹੋਵੈਅਤਿਭਾਰੀ॥
ਜਿਥੇ ਬੜੀ ਭਾਰੀ ਮੁਸ਼ਕਲ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ,
Where the obstacles are so very heavy,
ਹਰਿਕੋਨਾਮੁਖਿਨਮਾਹਿਉਧਾਰੀ॥
(ਓਥੇ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਅੱਖ ਦੇ ਫੋਰ ਵਿਚ ਬਚਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
the Name of the Lord shall rescue you in an instant.
ਅਨਿਕਪੁਨਹਚਰਨਕਰਤਨਹੀਤਰੈ॥
ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਰਸਮਾਂ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਭੀ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਾਪਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਨਹੀਂ ਬਚਦਾ,
By performing countless religious rituals, you shall not be saved.
ਹਰਿਕੋਨਾਮੁਕੋਟਿਪਾਪਪਰਹਰੈ॥
(ਪਰ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਕਰੋੜਾਂ ਪਾਪਾਂ ਦਾ ਨਾਸ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
The Name of the Lord washes off millions of sins.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਨਾਮੁਜਪਹੁਮਨਮੇਰੇ॥
(ਤਾਂ ਤੇ) ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਣ ਪੈ ਕੇ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ) ਨਾਮ ਜਪ;
As Gurmukh, chant the Naam, O my mind.
ਨਾਨਕਪਾਵਹੁਸੂਖਘਨੇਰੇ॥੧॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ) ਬੜੇ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਵਹਿਂਗਾ ॥੧॥
O Nanak, you shall obtain countless joys. ||1||
ਸਗਲਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿਕੋਰਾਜਾਦੁਖੀਆ॥
(ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਸਾਰੀ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦਾ ਰਾਜਾ (ਹੋ ਕੇ ਭੀ) ਦੁਖੀ (ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ),
The rulers of the all the world are unhappy;
ਹਰਿਕਾਨਾਮੁਜਪਤਹੋਇਸੁਖੀਆ॥
ਪਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਿਆਂ ਸੁਖੀ (ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ);
one who chants the Name of the Lord becomes happy.
ਲਾਖਕਰੋਰੀਬੰਧੁਨਪਰੈ॥
(ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਲੱਖਾਂ ਕਰੋੜਾਂ (ਰੁਪਏ) ਕਮਾ ਕੇ ਭੀ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਹ ਵਿਚ) ਰੋਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦੀ,
Acquiring hundreds of thousands and millions, your desires shall not be contained.
ਹਰਿਕਾਨਾਮੁਜਪਤਨਿਸਤਰੈ॥
(ਏਸ ਮਾਇਆ-ਕਾਂਗ ਤੋਂ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪ ਕੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ;
Chanting the Name of the Lord, you shall find release.
ਅਨਿਕਮਾਇਆਰੰਗਤਿਖਨਬੁਝਾਵੈ॥
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀਆਂ ਬੇ-ਅੰਤ ਮੌਜਾਂ ਹੁੰਦਿਆਂ ਭੀ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ) ਤ੍ਰਿਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਬੁੱਝਦੀ,
By the countless pleasures of Maya, your thirst shall not be quenched.
ਹਰਿਕਾਨਾਮੁਜਪਤਆਘਾਵੈ॥
(ਪਰ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਿਆਂ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਲੋਂ) ਰੱਜ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
Chanting the Name of the Lord, you shall be satisfied.
ਜਿਹਮਾਰਗਿਇਹੁਜਾਤਇਕੇਲਾ॥
ਜਿਹਨੀਂ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਇਹ ਜੀਵ ਇਕੱਲਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਭਾਵ, ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੇ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਝੰਬੇਲਿਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਇਸ ਚਿੰਤਾਤੁਰ ਜੀਵ ਦੀ ਕੋਈ ਸਹੈਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ)
Upon that path where you must go all alone,
ਤਹਹਰਿਨਾਮੁਸੰਗਿਹੋਤਸੁਹੇਲਾ॥
ਓਥੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਸੁਖ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
there, only the Lord's Name shall go with you to sustain you.
ਐਸਾਨਾਮੁਮਨਸਦਾਧਿਆਈਐ॥
(ਤਾਂ ਤੇ) ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਅਜੇਹਾ (ਸੁਹੇਲਾ) ਨਾਮ ਸਦਾ ਸਿਮਰੀਏ,
On such a Name, O my mind, meditate forever.
ਨਾਨਕਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਪਰਮਗਤਿਪਾਈਐ॥੨॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਨਾਮ ਜਪਿਆਂ) ਉੱਚਾ ਦਰਜਾ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
O Nanak, as Gurmukh, you shall obtain the state of supreme dignity. ||2||
ਛੂਟਤਨਹੀਕੋਟਿਲਖਬਾਹੀ॥
ਲੱਖਾਂ ਕਰੋੜਾਂ ਭਰਾਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਹੁੰਦਿਆਂ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜਿਸ ਦੀਨ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਤੋਂ) ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਦਾ,
You shall not be saved by hundreds of thousands and millions of helping hands.
ਨਾਮੁਜਪਤਤਹਪਾਰਿਪਰਾਹੀ॥
ਓਥੋਂ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ) ਨਾਮ ਜਪਿਆਂ (ਜੀਵ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
Chanting the Naam, you shall be lifted up and carried across.
ਅਨਿਕਬਿਘਨਜਹਆਇਸੰਘਾਰੈ॥
ਜਿਥੇ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਔਕੜਾਂ ਆ ਦਬਾਉਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ,
Where countless misfortunes threaten to destroy you,
ਹਰਿਕਾਨਾਮੁਤਤਕਾਲਉਧਾਰੈ॥
(ਓਥੇ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਤੁਰਤ ਬਚਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
the Name of the Lord shall rescue you in an instant.
ਅਨਿਕਜੋਨਿਜਨਮੈਮਰਿਜਾਮ॥
(ਜੀਵ) ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੰਮਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਫਿਰ) ਜੰਮਦਾ ਹੈ (ਏਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ),
Through countless incarnations, people are born and die.
ਨਾਮੁਜਪਤਪਾਵੈਬਿਸ੍ਰਾਮ॥
ਨਾਮ ਜਪਿਆਂ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਟਿਕ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
Chanting the Name of the Lord, you shall come to rest in peace.
ਹਉਮੈਲਾਮਲੁਕਬਹੁਨਧੋਵੈ॥
ਹਉਮੈ ਨਾਲ ਗੰਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ (ਜੀਵ) ਕਦੇ ਇਹ ਮੈਲ ਧੋਂਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ,
The ego is polluted by a filth which can never be washed off.
ਹਰਿਕਾਨਾਮੁਕੋਟਿਪਾਪਖੋਵੈ॥
(ਪਰ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਕਰੋੜਾਂ ਪਾਪ ਨਾਸ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
The Name of the Lord erases millions of sins.
ਐਸਾਨਾਮੁਜਪਹੁਮਨਰੰਗਿ॥
ਹੇ ਮਨ! (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ) ਅਜੇਹਾ ਨਾਮ ਪਿਆਰ ਨਾਲ ਜਪ।
Chant such a Name with love, O my mind.
ਨਾਨਕਪਾਈਐਸਾਧਕੈਸੰਗਿ॥੩॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ) ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
O Nanak, it is obtained in the Company of the Holy. ||3||
ਜਿਹਮਾਰਗਕੇਗਨੇਜਾਹਿਨਕੋਸਾ॥
ਜਿਸ (ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਰੂਪੀ) ਪੈਂਡੇ ਦੇ ਕੋਹ ਗਿਣੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੇ,
On that path where the miles cannot be counted,
ਹਰਿਕਾਨਾਮੁਊਹਾਸੰਗਿਤੋਸਾ॥
ਉਥੇ (ਭਾਵ, ਉਸ ਲੰਮੇ ਸਫ਼ਰ ਵਿਚ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਜੀਵ ਦੇ) ਨਾਲ (ਰਾਹ ਦੀ) ਰਾਸ-ਪੂੰਜੀ ਹੈ।
there, the Name of the Lord shall be your sustenance.
ਜਿਹਪੈਡੈਮਹਾਅੰਧਗੁਬਾਰਾ॥
ਜਿਸ (ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਰੂਪ) ਰਾਹ ਵਿਚ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦਾ) ਬੜਾ ਘੁੱਪ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਹੈ,
On that journey of total, pitch-black darkness,
ਹਰਿਕਾਨਾਮੁਸੰਗਿਉਜੀਆਰਾ॥
(ਓਥੇ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਜੀਵ ਦੇ) ਨਾਲ ਚਾਨਣ ਹੈ।
the Name of the Lord shall be the Light with you.
ਜਹਾਪੰਥਿਤੇਰਾਕੋਨਸਿਞਾਨੂ॥
ਜਿਸ ਰਸਤੇ ਵਿਚ (ਹੇ ਜੀਵ!) ਤੇਰਾ ਕੋਈ (ਅਸਲੀ) ਮਰਹਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ,
On that journey where no one knows you,
ਹਰਿਕਾਨਾਮੁਤਹਨਾਲਿਪਛਾਨੂ॥
ਓਥੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ (ਸੱਚਾ) ਸਾਥੀ ਹੈ।
with the Name of the Lord, you shall be recognized.
ਜਹਮਹਾਭਇਆਨਤਪਤਿਬਹੁਘਾਮ॥
ਜਿਥੇ (ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੇ ਸਫ਼ਰ ਵਿਚ) (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ) ਬੜੀ ਭਿਆਨਕ ਤਪਸ਼ ਤੇ ਗਰਮੀ ਹੈ,
Where there is awesome and terrible heat and blazing sunshine,
ਤਹਹਰਿਕੇਨਾਮਕੀਤੁਮਊਪਰਿਛਾਮ॥
ਓਥੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਹੇ ਜੀਵ!) ਤੇਰੇ ਉਤੇ ਛਾਂ ਹੈ।
there, the Name of the Lord will give you shade.
ਜਹਾਤ੍ਰਿਖਾਮਨਤੁਝੁਆਕਰਖੈ॥
(ਹੇ ਜੀਵ!) ਜਿਥੇ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ) ਤ੍ਰਿਹ ਤੈਨੂੰ (ਸਦਾ) ਖਿੱਚ ਪਾਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ,
Where thirst, O my mind, torments you to cry out,
ਤਹਨਾਨਕਹਰਿਹਰਿਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁਬਰਖੈ॥੪॥
ਓਥੇ, ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਬਰਖਾ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ (ਜੋ ਤਪਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਬੁਝਾ ਦੇਂਦੀ ਹੈ) ॥੪॥
there, O Nanak, the Ambrosial Name, Har, Har, shall rain down upon you. ||4||
ਭਗਤਜਨਾਕੀਬਰਤਨਿਨਾਮੁ॥
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਨਾਮ ਭਗਤਾਂ ਦਾ ਹੱਥ-ਠੋਕਾ ਹੈ,
Unto the devotee, the Naam is an article of daily use.
ਸੰਤਜਨਾਕੈਮਨਿਬਿਸ੍ਰਾਮੁ॥
ਭਗਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਹੀ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਇਹ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
The minds of the humble Saints are at peace.
ਹਰਿਕਾਨਾਮੁਦਾਸਕੀਓਟ॥
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਭਗਤਾਂ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੈ,
The Name of the Lord is the Support of His servants.
ਹਰਿਕੈਨਾਮਿਉਧਰੇਜਨਕੋਟਿ॥
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਕਰੋੜਾਂ ਬੰਦੇ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਬਚ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
By the Name of the Lord, millions have been saved.
ਹਰਿਜਸੁਕਰਤਸੰਤਦਿਨੁਰਾਤਿ॥
ਭਗਤ ਜਨ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ,
The Saints chant the Praises of the Lord, day and night.
ਹਰਿਹਰਿਅਉਖਧੁਸਾਧਕਮਾਤਿ॥
ਤੇ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਨਾਮ ਰੂਪੀ ਦਵਾਈ ਇਕੱਠੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ (ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਹਉਮੈ ਰੋਗ ਦੂਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ)।
Har, Har - the Lord's Name - the Holy use it as their healing medicine.
ਹਰਿਜਨਕੈਹਰਿਨਾਮੁਨਿਧਾਨੁ॥
ਭਗਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਾਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਹੈ,
The Lord's Name is the treasure of the Lord's servant.
ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮਿਜਨਕੀਨੋਦਾਨ॥
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੇਵਕਾਂ ਤੇ ਆਪ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ।
The Supreme Lord God has blessed His humble servant with this gift.
ਮਨਤਨਰੰਗਿਰਤੇਰੰਗਿਏਕੈ॥
ਭਗਤ ਜਨ ਮਨੋਂ ਤਨੋਂ ਇਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ;
Mind and body are imbued with ecstasy in the Love of the One Lord.
ਨਾਨਕਜਨਕੈਬਿਰਤਿਬਿਬੇਕੈ॥੫॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਭਗਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਚੰਗੇ ਮੰਦੇ ਦੀ ਪਰਖ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਸੁਭਾਉ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
O Nanak, careful and discerning understanding is the way of the Lord's humble servant. ||5||
ਹਰਿਕਾਨਾਮੁਜਨਕਉਮੁਕਤਿਜੁਗਤਿ॥
ਭਗਤ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਹੀ) (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਬੰਧਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਛੁਟਕਾਰੇ ਦਾ ਵਸੀਲਾ ਹੈ,
The Name of the Lord is the path of liberation for His humble servants.
ਹਰਿਕੈਨਾਮਿਜਨਕਉਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿਭੁਗਤਿ॥
(ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਭਗਤ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ) ਭੋਗਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ ਰੱਜ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
With the food of the Name of the Lord, His servants are satisfied.
ਹਰਿਕਾਨਾਮੁਜਨਕਾਰੂਪਰੰਗੁ॥
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਭਗਤ ਦਾ ਸੋਹਜ ਸੁਹਣੱਪ ਹੈ,
The Name of the Lord is the beauty and delight of His servants.
ਹਰਿਨਾਮੁਜਪਤਕਬਪਰੈਨਭੰਗੁ॥
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦਿਆਂ (ਭਗਤ ਦੇ ਰਾਹ ਵਿਚ) ਕਦੇ (ਕੋਈ) ਅਟਕਾਉ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦਾ।
Chanting the Lord's Name, one is never blocked by obstacles.
ਹਰਿਕਾਨਾਮੁਜਨਕੀਵਡਿਆਈ॥
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਹੀ) ਭਗਤ ਦੀ ਪਤ-ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਹੈ,
The Name of the Lord is the glorious greatness of His servants.
ਹਰਿਕੈਨਾਮਿਜਨਸੋਭਾਪਾਈ॥
(ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਹੀ) ਭਗਤਾਂ ਨੇ (ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ) ਨਾਮਣਾ ਪਾਇਆ ਹੈ।
Through the Name of the Lord, His servants obtain honor.
