ਨਾਨਕਦੀਜੈਨਾਮਦਾਨੁਰਾਖਉਹੀਐਪਰੋਇ॥੫੫॥
ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਦਾਨ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼, (ਇਹ ਦਾਨ) ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰੋ ਕੇ ਰੱਖਾਂ ॥੫੫॥
Nanak: grant me the Gift of Your Name, Lord, that I may string it and keep it within my heart. ||55||

ਗੁਰਦੇਵਮਾਤਾਗੁਰਦੇਵਪਿਤਾਗੁਰਦੇਵਸੁਆਮੀਪਰਮੇਸੁਰਾ॥
ਗੁਰੂ ਹੀ ਮਾਂ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਹੀ ਪਿਉ ਹੈ (ਗੁਰੂ ਹੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਜਨਮ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ), ਗੁਰੂ ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਹੈ।
The Divine Guru is our mother, the Divine Guru is our father; the Divine Guru is our Lord and Master, the Transcendent Lord.
ਗੁਰਦੇਵਸਖਾਅਗਿਆਨਭੰਜਨੁਗੁਰਦੇਵਬੰਧਿਪਸਹੋਦਰਾ॥
ਗੁਰੂ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦਾ) ਹਨੇਰਾ ਨਾਸ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਿੱਤਰ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਹੀ (ਤੋੜ ਨਿਭਣ ਵਾਲਾ) ਸੰਬੰਧੀ ਤੇ ਭਰਾ ਹੈ।
The Divine Guru is my companion, the Destroyer of ignorance; the Divine Guru is my relative and brother.
ਗੁਰਦੇਵਦਾਤਾਹਰਿਨਾਮੁਉਪਦੇਸੈਗੁਰਦੇਵਮੰਤੁਨਿਰੋਧਰਾ॥
ਗੁਰੂ (ਅਸਲੀ) ਦਾਤਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਐਸਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਅਸਰ (ਕੋਈ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਆਦਿਕ) ਗਵਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ।
The Divine Guru is the Giver, the Teacher of the Lord's Name. The Divine Guru is the Mantra which never fails.
ਗੁਰਦੇਵਸਾਂਤਿਸਤਿਬੁਧਿਮੂਰਤਿਗੁਰਦੇਵਪਾਰਸਪਰਸਪਰਾ॥
ਗੁਰੂ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਸੱਚ ਅਤੇ ਅਕਲ ਦਾ ਸਰੂਪ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਇਕ ਐਸਾ ਪਾਰਸ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਛੋਹ ਪਾਰਸ ਦੀ ਛੋਹ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਹੈ।
The Divine Guru is the image of peace, truth and wisdom. The Divine Guru is the Philosopher's Stone - touching it, one is transformed.
ਗੁਰਦੇਵਤੀਰਥੁਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਸਰੋਵਰੁਗੁਰਗਿਆਨਮਜਨੁਅਪਰੰਪਰਾ॥
ਗੁਰੂ (ਸੱਚਾ) ਤੀਰਥ ਹੈ, ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਦਾ ਸਰੋਵਰ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਗਿਆਨ (-ਜਲ) ਦਾ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ (ਹੋਰ ਸਾਰੇ ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਦੇ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਨਾਲੋਂ) ਬਹੁਤ ਹੀ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਹੈ।
The Divine Guru is the sacred shrine of pilgrimage, and the pool of divine nectar; bathing in the Guru's wisdom, one experiences the Infinite.
ਗੁਰਦੇਵਕਰਤਾਸਭਿਪਾਪਹਰਤਾਗੁਰਦੇਵਪਤਿਤਪਵਿਤਕਰਾ॥
ਗੁਰੂ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਹੈ, ਸਾਰੇ ਪਾਪਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਵਿਕਾਰੀ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ (ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ) ਨੂੰ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ।
The Divine Guru is the Creator, and the Destroyer of all sins; the Divine Guru is the Purifier of sinners.
ਗੁਰਦੇਵਆਦਿਜੁਗਾਦਿਜੁਗੁਜੁਗੁਗੁਰਦੇਵਮੰਤੁਹਰਿਜਪਿਉਧਰਾ॥
ਜਦੋਂ ਤੋਂ ਜਗਤ ਬਣਿਆ ਹੈ ਗੁਰੂ ਸ਼ੂਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਹਰੇਕ ਜੁਗ ਵਿਚ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼-ਦਾਤਾ) ਹੈ। ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਜਪ ਕੇ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਦੇ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਲਹਿਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਜਾਈਦਾ ਹੈ।
The Divine Guru existed in the very beginning, throughout the ages, in each and every age. The Divine Guru is the Mantra of the Lord's Name; chanting it, one is saved.
ਗੁਰਦੇਵਸੰਗਤਿਪ੍ਰਭਮੇਲਿਕਰਿਕਿਰਪਾਹਮਮੂੜਪਾਪੀਜਿਤੁਲਗਿਤਰਾ॥
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰ, ਸਾਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਦੇਹ, ਤਾ ਕਿ ਅਸੀਂ ਮੂਰਖ ਪਾਪੀ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ (ਰਹਿ ਕੇ) ਤਰ ਜਾਈਏ।
O God, please be merciful to me, that I may be with the Divine Guru; I am a foolish sinner, but holding onto Him, I will be carried across.
ਗੁਰਦੇਵਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁਪਰਮੇਸਰੁਗੁਰਦੇਵਨਾਨਕਹਰਿਨਮਸਕਰਾ॥੧॥
ਗੁਰੂ ਪਰਮੇਸਰ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਰੂਪ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ (ਸਦਾ) ਨਮਸਕਾਰ ਕਰਨੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
The Divine Guru is the True Guru, the Supreme Lord God, the Transcendent Lord; Nanak bows in humble reverence to the Lord, the Divine Guru. ||1||
ਏਹੁਸਲੋਕੁਆਦਿਅੰਤਿਪੜਣਾ॥
ਇਹ ਸਲੋਕ ਇਸ 'ਬਾਵਨ ਅਖਰੀ' ਦੇ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਵਿਚ ਭੀ ਪੜ੍ਹਨਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਅਖ਼ੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਭੀ ਪੜ੍ਹਨਾ ਹੈ।

ਇਸ ਬਾਣੀ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੈ 'ਸੁਖਮਨੀ' ਅਤੇ ਇਹ ਗਉੜੀ ਰਾਗ ਵਿਚ ਦਰਜ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਦੇ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਅਰਜਨੁ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਹਨ।

ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:
ਆਦਿਗੁਰਏਨਮਹ॥
(ਮੇਰੀ) ਉਸ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਡੇ (ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ) ਨੂੰ ਨਮਸਕਾਰ ਹੈ ਜੋ (ਸਭ ਦਾ) ਮੁੱਢ ਹੈ,
I bow to the Primal Guru.
ਜੁਗਾਦਿਗੁਰਏਨਮਹ॥
ਅਤੇ ਜੋ ਜੁਗਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੁੱਢ ਤੋਂ ਹੈ।
I bow to the Guru of the ages.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਏਨਮਹ॥
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ (ਮੇਰੀ) ਨਮਸਕਾਰ ਹੈ,
I bow to the True Guru.
ਸ੍ਰੀਗੁਰਦੇਵਏਨਮਹ॥੧॥
ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਨੂੰ (ਮੇਰੀ) ਨਮਸਕਾਰ ਹੈ ॥੧॥

ਸਿਮਰਉਸਿਮਰਿਸਿਮਰਿਸੁਖੁਪਾਵਉ॥
ਮੈਂ (ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ) ਸਿਮਰਾਂ ਤੇ ਸਿਮਰ ਸਿਮਰ ਕੇ ਸੁਖ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਾਂ;
Meditate, meditate, meditate in remembrance of Him, and find peace.
ਕਲਿਕਲੇਸਤਨਮਾਹਿਮਿਟਾਵਉ॥
(ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ (ਜੋ) ਦੁੱਖ ਬਿਖਾਂਧ (ਹਨ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਮਿਟਾ ਲਵਾਂ।
Worry and anguish shall be dispelled from your body.
ਸਿਮਰਉਜਾਸੁਬਿਸੁੰਭਰਏਕੈ॥
ਜਿਸ ਇਕ ਜਗਤ ਪਾਲਕ (ਹਰੀ) ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-
Remember in praise the One who pervades the whole Universe.
ਨਾਮੁਜਪਤਅਗਨਤਅਨੇਕੈ॥
ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਤੇ ਅਣਗਿਣਤ (ਜੀਵ) ਜਪਦੇ ਹਨ, ਮੈਂ (ਭੀ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ) ਸਿਮਰਾਂ।
His Name is chanted by countless people, in so many ways.
ਬੇਦਪੁਰਾਨਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿਸੁਧਾਖੵਰ॥
ਵੇਦਾਂ ਪੁਰਾਨਾਂ ਤੇ ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤੀਆਂ ਨੇ-
The Vedas, the Puraanas and the Simritees, the purest of utterances,
ਕੀਨੇਰਾਮਨਾਮਇਕਆਖੵਰ॥
ਇਕ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਨਾਮ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਹੈ।
were created from the One Word of the Name of the Lord.
ਕਿਨਕਾਏਕਜਿਸੁਜੀਅਬਸਾਵੈ॥
ਜਿਸ (ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਦੇ ਜੀ ਵਿਚ (ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਅਪਨਾ ਨਾਮ) ਥੋੜਾ ਜਿਹਾ ਭੀ ਵਸਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
That one, in whose soul the One Lord dwells
ਤਾਕੀਮਹਿਮਾਗਨੀਨਆਵੈ॥
ਉਸ ਦੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਬਿਆਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ।
the praises of his glory cannot be recounted.
ਕਾਂਖੀਏਕੈਦਰਸਤੁਹਾਰੋ॥
(ਹੇ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ!) ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਤੇਰੇ ਦੀਦਾਰ ਦੇ ਚਾਹਵਾਨ ਹਨ,
Those who yearn only for the blessing of Your Darshan
ਨਾਨਕਉਨਸੰਗਿਮੋਹਿਉਧਾਰੋ॥੧॥
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ (ਰੱਖ ਕੇ) ਮੈਨੂੰ ਨਾਨਕ ਨੂੰ (ਸੰਸਾਰ ਸਾਗਰ ਤੋਂ) ਬਚਾ ਲਵੋ ॥੧॥
- Nanak: save me along with them! ||1||
ਸੁਖਮਨੀਸੁਖਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਪ੍ਰਭਨਾਮੁ॥
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਅਮਰ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਤੇ ਸੁਖਦਾਈ ਨਾਮ (ਸਭ) ਸੁਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਮਣੀ ਹੈ,
Sukhmani: Peace of Mind, the Nectar of the Name of God.
ਭਗਤਜਨਾਕੈਮਨਿਬਿਸ੍ਰਾਮੁ॥ਰਹਾਉ॥
ਇਸ ਦਾ ਟਿਕਾਣਾ ਭਗਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਹੈ।ਰਹਾਉ।
The minds of the devotees abide in a joyful peace. ||Pause||
ਪ੍ਰਭਕੈਸਿਮਰਨਿਗਰਭਿਨਬਸੈ॥
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਨ ਨਾਲ (ਜੀਵ) ਜਨਮ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ,
Remembering God, one does not have to enter into the womb again.
ਪ੍ਰਭਕੈਸਿਮਰਨਿਦੂਖੁਜਮੁਨਸੈ॥
(ਜੀਵ ਦਾ) ਦੁਖ ਤੇ ਜਮ (ਦਾ ਡਰ) ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
Remembering God, the pain of death is dispelled.
ਪ੍ਰਭਕੈਸਿਮਰਨਿਕਾਲੁਪਰਹਰੈ॥
ਮੌਤ (ਦਾ ਭਉ) ਪਰੇ ਹਟ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
Remembering God, death is eliminated.
ਪ੍ਰਭਕੈਸਿਮਰਨਿਦੁਸਮਨੁਟਰੈ॥
(ਵਿਕਾਰ ਰੂਪੀ) ਦੁਸ਼ਮਨ ਟਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
Remembering God, one's enemies are repelled.
ਪ੍ਰਭਸਿਮਰਤਕਛੁਬਿਘਨੁਨਲਾਗੈ॥
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰਿਆਂ (ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੇ ਰਾਹ ਵਿਚ) ਕੋਈ ਰੁਕਾਵਟ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦੀ,
Remembering God, no obstacles are met.
ਪ੍ਰਭਕੈਸਿਮਰਨਿਅਨਦਿਨੁਜਾਗੈ॥
(ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਨ ਨਾਲ (ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ) ਸੁਚੇਤ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
Remembering God, one remains awake and aware, night and day.
ਪ੍ਰਭਕੈਸਿਮਰਨਿਭਉਨਬਿਆਪੈ॥
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਨ ਨਾਲ (ਕੋਈ) ਡਰ (ਜੀਵ ਉਤੇ) ਦਬਾਉ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਦਾ,
Remembering God, one is not touched by fear.
ਪ੍ਰਭਕੈਸਿਮਰਨਿਦੁਖੁਨਸੰਤਾਪੈ॥
ਤੇ (ਕੋਈ) ਦੁੱਖ ਵਿਆਕੁਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ।
Remembering God, one does not suffer sorrow.
ਪ੍ਰਭਕਾਸਿਮਰਨੁਸਾਧਕੈਸੰਗਿ॥
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਗੁਰਮਖਿ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ (ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ);
The meditative remembrance of God is in the Company of the Holy.
ਸਰਬਨਿਧਾਨਨਾਨਕਹਰਿਰੰਗਿ॥੨॥
(ਅਤੇ ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ) ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ (ਹੀ) (ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ) ਸਾਰੇ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ (ਪ੍ਰਤੀਤ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ) ॥੨॥
All treasures, O Nanak, are in the Love of the Lord. ||2||
ਪ੍ਰਭਕੈਸਿਮਰਨਿਰਿਧਿਸਿਧਿਨਉਨਿਧਿ॥
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਵਿਚ (ਹੀ) ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਰਿੱਧੀਆਂ ਸਿੱਧੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਨੌ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਹਨ,
In the remembrance of God are wealth, miraculous spiritual powers and the nine treasures.
ਪ੍ਰਭਕੈਸਿਮਰਨਿਗਿਆਨੁਧਿਆਨੁਤਤੁਬੁਧਿ॥
ਪ੍ਰਭ-ਸਿਮਰਨ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਗਿਆਨ, ਸੁਰਤ ਦਾ ਟਿਕਾਉ ਤੇ ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਮੂਲ (ਹਰੀ) ਦੀ ਸਮਝ ਵਾਲੀ ਬੁੱਧੀ ਹੈ।
In the remembrance of God are knowledge, meditation and the essence of wisdom.
ਪ੍ਰਭਕੈਸਿਮਰਨਿਜਪਤਪਪੂਜਾ॥
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ (ਸਾਰੇ) ਜਾਪ ਤਾਪ ਤੇ (ਦੇਵ-) ਪੂਜਾ ਹਨ,
In the remembrance of God are chanting, intense meditation and devotional worship.
ਪ੍ਰਭਕੈਸਿਮਰਨਿਬਿਨਸੈਦੂਜਾ॥
(ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਨ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਉਸ ਵਰਗੀ ਹਸਤੀ ਦੀ ਹੋਂਦ ਦਾ ਖ਼ਿਆਲ ਹੀ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
In the remembrance of God, duality is removed.
ਪ੍ਰਭਕੈਸਿਮਰਨਿਤੀਰਥਇਸਨਾਨੀ॥
ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ (ਆਤਮ-) ਤੀਰਥ ਦਾ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਈਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ,
In the remembrance of God are purifying baths at sacred shrines of pilgrimage.
ਪ੍ਰਭਕੈਸਿਮਰਨਿਦਰਗਹਮਾਨੀ॥
ਦਰਗਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ;
In the remembrance of God, one attains honor in the Court of the Lord.
ਪ੍ਰਭਕੈਸਿਮਰਨਿਹੋਇਸੁਭਲਾ॥
ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਜੋ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਭਲਾ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
In the remembrance of God, one becomes good.
ਪ੍ਰਭਕੈਸਿਮਰਨਿਸੁਫਲਫਲਾ॥
ਤੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ-ਜਨਮ ਦਾ ਉੱਚਾ ਮਨੋਰਥ ਸਿੱਧ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
In the remembrance of God, one flowers in fruition.
ਸੇਸਿਮਰਹਿਜਿਨਆਪਿਸਿਮਰਾਏ॥
(ਨਾਮ) ਉਹੀ ਸਿਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪਿ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
They alone remember Him in meditation, whom He inspires to meditate.
