ਨਾਮਬਿਹੂਨੇਨਾਨਕਾਹੋਤਜਾਤਸਭੁਧੂਰ॥੧॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣਾ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਸਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ ਹੀ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਜੀਵਨ ਗੁਜ਼ਾਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
Without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, O Nanak, all are reduced to dust. ||1||

ਧਧਾਧੂਰਿਪੁਨੀਤਤੇਰੇਜਨੂਆ॥
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੇਰੇ ਸੇਵਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਧੂੜ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ (ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ) ਹੈ।
DHADHA: The dust of the feet of the Saints is sacred.
ਧਨਿਤੇਊਜਿਹਰੁਚਇਆਮਨੂਆ॥
ਉਹ ਬੰਦੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਹਨ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਇਸ ਧੂੜ ਦੀ ਤਾਂਘ ਹੈ।
Blessed are those whose minds are filled with this longing.
ਧਨੁਨਹੀਬਾਛਹਿਸੁਰਗਨਆਛਹਿ॥
(ਅਜੇਹੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਸ ਚਰਨ-ਧੂੜ ਦੇ ਟਾਕਰੇ ਤੇ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਵਾਲਾ) ਧਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੋੜਦੇ, ਸੁਰਗ ਦੀ ਭੀ ਤਾਂਘ ਨਹੀਂ ਰੱਖਦੇ,
They do not seek wealth, and they do not desire paradise.
ਅਤਿਪ੍ਰਿਅਪ੍ਰੀਤਿਸਾਧਰਜਰਾਚਹਿ॥
ਉਹ ਤਾਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਅਤਿ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਵਿਚ ਅਤੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਚਰਨ-ਧੂੜ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਮਸਤ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
They are immersed in the deep love of their Beloved, and the dust of the feet of the Holy.
ਧੰਧੇਕਹਾਬਿਆਪਹਿਤਾਹੂ॥
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਕੋਈ ਜੰਜਾਲ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਤੇ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਦੇ,
How can worldly affairs affect those
ਜੋਏਕਛਾਡਿਅਨਕਤਹਿਨਜਾਹੂ॥
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਓਟ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਪਾਸੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦੇ।
who do not abandon the One Lord, and who go nowhere else?
ਜਾਕੈਹੀਐਦੀਓਪ੍ਰਭਨਾਮ॥
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣਾ ਨਾਮ ਵਸਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ,
One whose heart is filled with God's Name,
ਨਾਨਕਸਾਧਪੂਰਨਭਗਵਾਨ॥੪॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਪੂਰੇ ਸੰਤ ਹਨ ॥੪॥
O Nanak, is a perfect spiritual being of God. ||4||

ਅਨਿਕਭੇਖਅਰੁਙਿਆਨਧਿਆਨਮਨਹਠਿਮਿਲਿਅਉਨਕੋਇ॥
ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਭੇਖ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ, ਧਰਮ-ਚਰਚਾ ਕਰਨ ਨਾਲ, ਮਨ ਦੇ ਹਠ ਨਾਲ ਸਮਾਧੀਆਂ ਲਾਇਆਂ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲ ਸਕਦਾ।
By all sorts of religious robes, knowledge, meditation and stubborn-mindedness, no one has ever met God.
ਕਹੁਨਾਨਕਕਿਰਪਾਭਈਭਗਤੁਙਿਆਨੀਸੋਇ॥੧॥
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ- ਜਿਸ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਹੋਵੇ, ਉਹੀ ਭਗਤ ਬਣ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
Says Nanak, those upon whom God showers His Mercy, are devotees of spiritual wisdom. ||1||

ਙੰਙਾਙਿਆਨੁਨਹੀਮੁਖਬਾਤਉ॥
ਨਿਰੀਆਂ ਮੂੰਹ ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਨਾਲ,
NGANGA: Spiritual wisdom is not obtained by mere words of mouth.
ਅਨਿਕਜੁਗਤਿਸਾਸਤ੍ਰਕਰਿਭਾਤਉ॥
ਸ਼ਾਸਤਰਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਅਨੇਕ ਕਿਸਮ ਦੀਆਂ ਜੁਗਤੀਆਂ ਵਰਤਿਆਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਜਾਣ-ਪਛਾਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ।
It is not obtained through the various debates of the Shaastras and scriptures.
ਙਿਆਨੀਸੋਇਜਾਕੈਦ੍ਰਿੜਸੋਊ॥
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਉਹੀ ਜਾਣ-ਪਛਾਣ ਪਾਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਪੱਕਾ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਬਣੇ।
They alone are spiritually wise, whose minds are firmly fixed on the Lord.
ਕਹਤਸੁਨਤਕਛੁਜੋਗੁਨਹੋਊ॥
ਨਿਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਮਿਲਾਪ ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਆਖਣ ਸੁਣਨ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਮਿਲਾਪ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ।
Hearing and telling stories, no one attains Yoga.
ਙਿਆਨੀਰਹਤਆਗਿਆਦ੍ਰਿੜੁਜਾਕੈ॥
ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਪੱਕੀ ਟਿਕੀ ਰਹੇ, ਉਹੀ ਅਸਲ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਹੈ।
They alone are spiritually wise, who remain firmly committed to the Lord's Command.
ਉਸਨਸੀਤਸਮਸਰਿਸਭਤਾਕੈ॥
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਰਾ ਦੁਖ-ਸੁਖ ਇਕ-ਸਮਾਨ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
Heat and cold are all the same to them.
ਙਿਆਨੀਤਤੁਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਬੀਚਾਰੀ॥
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਜਗਤ-ਦੇ-ਮੂਲ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਵਿਚਾਰਵਾਨ ਬਣ ਜਾਵੇ,
The true people of spiritual wisdom are the Gurmukhs, who contemplate the essence of reality;
ਨਾਨਕਜਾਕਉਕਿਰਪਾਧਾਰੀ॥੫॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੇ, ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਬਣਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
O Nanak, the Lord showers His Mercy upon them. ||5||

ਆਵਨਆਏਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿਮਹਿਬਿਨੁਬੂਝੇਪਸੁਢੋਰ॥
ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੇ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਕਹਣ-ਮਾਤ੍ਰ ਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਲਿਆ, ਪਰ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਸਹੀ ਰਸਤਾ ਸਮਝਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਉਹ ਪਸ਼ੂ ਡੰਗਰ ਹੀ ਰਹੇ (ਪਸ਼ੂਆਂ ਵਾਲੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਹੀ ਗੁਜ਼ਾਰਦੇ ਰਹੇ)।
Those who have come into the world without understanding are like animals and beasts.
ਨਾਨਕਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਸੋਬੁਝੈਜਾਕੈਭਾਗਮਥੋਰ॥੧॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਸਹੀ ਰਸਤਾ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਉਤੇ (ਪੂਰਬਲੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਚੰਗੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦੇ) ਭਾਗ ਜਾਗ ਪੈਣ ॥੧॥
O Nanak, those who become Gurmukh understand; upon their foreheads is such pre-ordained destiny. ||1||

ਯਾਜੁਗਮਹਿਏਕਹਿਕਉਆਇਆ॥
ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਸ ਜਨਮ ਵਿਚ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਜਨਮਿਆ ਹੈ,
They have come into this world to meditate on the One Lord.
ਜਨਮਤਮੋਹਿਓਮੋਹਨੀਮਾਇਆ॥
ਪਰ ਜੰਮਦਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਠਗਣੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਠੱਗ ਲੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
But ever since their birth, they have been enticed by the fascination of Maya.
ਗਰਭਕੁੰਟਮਹਿਉਰਧਤਪਕਰਤੇ॥
(ਇਹ ਆਮ ਪਰਚਲਤ ਖ਼ਿਆਲ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਜੀਵ ਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੇਟ ਵਿਚ ਪੁੱਠੇ ਲਟਕੇ ਹੋਏ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਭਜਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ,
Upside-down in the chamber of the womb, they performed intense meditation.
ਸਾਸਿਸਾਸਿਸਿਮਰਤਪ੍ਰਭੁਰਹਤੇ॥
ਉਥੇ ਸੁਆਸ ਸੁਆਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
They remembered God in meditation with each and every breath.
ਉਰਝਿਪਰੇਜੋਛੋਡਿਛਡਾਨਾ॥
(ਪਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਅਜਬ ਮਾਇਆ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਜਿਸ ਮਾਇਆ ਨੂੰ ਜ਼ਰੂਰ ਛੱਡ ਜਾਣਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਵਿਚ ਸਾਰੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਫਸੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ,
But now, they are entangled in things which they must leave behind.
ਦੇਵਨਹਾਰੁਮਨਹਿਬਿਸਰਾਨਾ॥
ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸਾਰੇ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਨ ਤੋਂ ਭੁਲਾ ਦੇਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
They forget the Great Giver from their minds.
ਧਾਰਹੁਕਿਰਪਾਜਿਸਹਿਗੁਸਾਈ॥
ਹੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਤੇ ਤੂੰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ,
O Nanak, those upon whom the Lord showers His Mercy,
ਇਤਉਤਨਾਨਕਤਿਸੁਬਿਸਰਹੁਨਾਹੀ॥੬॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ-) ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨੋਂ ਤੂੰ ਲੋਕ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਕਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਵਿਸਰਦਾ ॥੬॥
do not forget Him, here or hereafter. ||6||
ਸਲੋਕੁ॥
Shalok:
ਆਵਤਹੁਕਮਿਬਿਨਾਸਹੁਕਮਿਆਗਿਆਭਿੰਨਨਕੋਇ॥
ਜੀਵ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੰਮਦਾ ਹੈ, ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਕੋਈ ਜੀਵ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਤੋਂ ਆਕੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ।
By His Command, we come, and by His Command, we go; no one is beyond His Command.
ਆਵਨਜਾਨਾਤਿਹਮਿਟੈਨਾਨਕਜਿਹਮਨਿਸੋਇ॥੧॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਸਿਰਫ਼) ਉਸ ਜੀਵ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ (ਦਾ ਗੇੜ) ਮੁੱਕਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ (ਹੁਕਮ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ) ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
Coming and going in reincarnation is ended, O Nanak, for those whose minds are filled with the Lord. ||1||

ਏਊਜੀਅਬਹੁਤੁਗ੍ਰਭਵਾਸੇ॥
ਇਹ ਜੀਵ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਵਾਸ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ,
This soul has lived in many wombs.
ਮੋਹਮਗਨਮੀਠਜੋਨਿਫਾਸੇ॥
ਮਿੱਠੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
Enticed by sweet attachment, it has been trapped in reincarnation.
ਇਨਿਮਾਇਆਤ੍ਰੈਗੁਣਬਸਿਕੀਨੇ॥
ਇਸ ਮਾਇਆ ਨੇ (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ) ਤਿੰਨ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਕਰ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਹੈ।
This Maya has subjugated beings through the three qualities.
ਆਪਨਮੋਹਘਟੇਘਟਿਦੀਨੇ॥
ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਇਸ ਨੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਮੋਹ ਟਿਕਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ।
Maya has infused attachment to itself in each and every heart.
ਏਸਾਜਨਕਛੁਕਹਹੁਉਪਾਇਆ॥
ਹੇ ਸੱਜਣ! ਕੋਈ ਐਸਾ ਇਲਾਜ ਦੱਸ,
O friend, tell me some way,
ਜਾਤੇਤਰਉਬਿਖਮਇਹਮਾਇਆ॥
ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਮੈਂ ਇਸ ਔਖੀ ਮਾਇਆ (ਦੇ ਮੋਹ-ਰੂਪ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ) ਵਿਚੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਸਕਾਂ।
by which I may swim across this treacherous ocean of Maya.
ਕਰਿਕਿਰਪਾਸਤਸੰਗਿਮਿਲਾਏ॥
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਜਿਸ ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਸਤਸੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
The Lord showers His Mercy, and leads us to join the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation.
ਨਾਨਕਤਾਕੈਨਿਕਟਿਨਮਾਏ॥੭॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ-) ਮਾਇਆ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਨਹੀਂ (ਢੁਕ ਸਕਦੀ) ॥੭॥
O Nanak, Maya does not even come near. ||7||
ਸਲੋਕੁ॥

ਕਿਰਤਕਮਾਵਨਸੁਭਅਸੁਭਕੀਨੇਤਿਨਿਪ੍ਰਭਿਆਪਿ॥
(ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਵਿਚ ਬੈਠ ਕੇ) ਸਭ ਚੰਗੇ ਮੰਦੇ ਕੰਮ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਕੀਤੇ ਹਨ)।
God Himself causes one to perform good and bad actions.
ਪਸੁਆਪਨਹਉਹਉਕਰੈਨਾਨਕਬਿਨੁਹਰਿਕਹਾਕਮਾਤਿ॥੧॥
ਪਰ ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਾਣ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ। ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਨਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਜੀਵ ਕੁਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ॥੧॥
The beast indulges in egotism, selfishness and conceit; O Nanak, without the Lord, what can anyone do? ||1||

ਏਕਹਿਆਪਿਕਰਾਵਨਹਾਰਾ॥
(ਜੀਵਾਂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਚੰਗੇ ਮੰਦੇ ਕੰਮ) ਕਰਾਵਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਹੈ,
The One Lord Himself is the Cause of all actions.
ਆਪਹਿਪਾਪਪੁੰਨਬਿਸਥਾਰਾ॥
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਚੰਗੇ ਮੰਦੇ ਕੰਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਖਿਲਾਰਾ ਖਿਲਾਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
He Himself distributes sins and noble acts.
ਇਆਜੁਗਜਿਤੁਜਿਤੁਆਪਹਿਲਾਇਓ॥
ਇਸ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਵਿਚ (ਭਾਵ, ਜਨਮ ਦੇ ਕੇ) ਜਿਸ ਜਿਸ ਪਾਸੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਉਧਰ ਹੀ ਜੀਵ ਲੱਗਦੇ ਹਨ),
In this age, people are attached as the Lord attaches them.
ਸੋਸੋਪਾਇਓਜੁਆਪਿਦਿਵਾਇਓ॥
ਜੇਹੜੀ (ਮਤਿ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹੀ ਉਹ ਗ੍ਰਹਣ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
They receive that which the Lord Himself gives.
ਉਆਕਾਅੰਤੁਨਜਾਨੈਕੋਊ॥
ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਜੀਵ ਅੰਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣ ਸਕਦਾ,
No one knows His limits.
ਜੋਜੋਕਰੈਸੋਊਫੁਨਿਹੋਊ॥
(ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ) ਉਹੀ ਕੁਝ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
Whatever He does, comes to pass.
ਏਕਹਿਤੇਸਗਲਾਬਿਸਥਾਰਾ॥
ਇਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ-ਖਿਲਾਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਖਿਲਰਿਆ ਹੈ,
From the One, the entire expanse of the Universe emanated.
ਨਾਨਕਆਪਿਸਵਾਰਨਹਾਰਾ॥੮॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿੱਧੇ ਰਾਹੇ ਪਾਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ॥੮॥
O Nanak, He Himself is our Saving Grace. ||8||

Shalok:
ਰਾਚਿਰਹੇਬਨਿਤਾਬਿਨੋਦਕੁਸਮਰੰਗਬਿਖਸੋਰ॥
(ਅਸੀਂ ਜੀਵ) ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਆਦਿਕ ਦੇ ਰੰਗ-ਤਮਾਸ਼ਿਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਹੋ ਰਹੇ ਹਾਂ, ਪਰ ਇਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਫੂੰ-ਫਾਂ ਕਸੁੰਭੇ ਦੇ ਰੰਗ (ਵਾਂਗ ਖਿਨ-ਭੰਗਰ ਹੀ ਹੈ)।
Man remains engrossed in women and playful pleasures; the tumult of his passion is like the dye of the safflower, which fades away all too soon.
ਨਾਨਕਤਿਹਸਰਨੀਪਰਉਬਿਨਸਿਜਾਇਮੈਮੋਰ॥੧॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ-) ਮੈਂ ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ (ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਨਾਲ) ਹਉਮੈ ਤੇ ਮਮਤਾ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
O Nanak, seek God's Sanctuary, and your selfishness and conceit shall be taken away. ||1||
