ਗੁਰਦੇਵਮਾਤਾਗੁਰਦੇਵਪਿਤਾਗੁਰਦੇਵਸੁਆਮੀਪਰਮੇਸੁਰਾ॥
ਗੁਰੂ ਹੀ ਮਾਂ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਹੀ ਪਿਉ ਹੈ (ਗੁਰੂ ਹੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਜਨਮ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ), ਗੁਰੂ ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਹੈ।
The Divine Guru is my mother, the Divine Guru is my father; the Divine Guru is my Transcendent Lord and Master.
ਗੁਰਦੇਵਸਖਾਅਗਿਆਨਭੰਜਨੁਗੁਰਦੇਵਬੰਧਿਪਸਹੋਦਰਾ॥
ਗੁਰੂ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦਾ) ਹਨੇਰਾ ਨਾਸ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਿੱਤਰ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਹੀ (ਤੋੜ ਨਿਭਣ ਵਾਲਾ) ਸੰਬੰਧੀ ਤੇ ਭਰਾ ਹੈ।
The Divine Guru is my companion, the Destroyer of ignorance; the Divine Guru is my relative and brother.
ਗੁਰਦੇਵਦਾਤਾਹਰਿਨਾਮੁਉਪਦੇਸੈਗੁਰਦੇਵਮੰਤੁਨਿਰੋਧਰਾ॥
ਗੁਰੂ (ਅਸਲੀ) ਦਾਤਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਐਸਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਅਸਰ (ਕੋਈ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਆਦਿਕ) ਗਵਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ।
The Divine Guru is the Giver, the Teacher of the Lord's Name. The Divine Guru is the Mantra which never fails.
ਗੁਰਦੇਵਸਾਂਤਿਸਤਿਬੁਧਿਮੂਰਤਿਗੁਰਦੇਵਪਾਰਸਪਰਸਪਰਾ॥
ਗੁਰੂ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਸੱਚ ਅਤੇ ਅਕਲ ਦਾ ਸਰੂਪ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਇਕ ਐਸਾ ਪਾਰਸ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਛੋਹ ਪਾਰਸ ਦੀ ਛੋਹ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਹੈ।
The Divine Guru is the Image of peace, truth and wisdom. The Divine Guru is the Philosopher's Stone - touching it, one is transformed.
ਗੁਰਦੇਵਤੀਰਥੁਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਸਰੋਵਰੁਗੁਰਗਿਆਨਮਜਨੁਅਪਰੰਪਰਾ॥
ਗੁਰੂ (ਸੱਚਾ) ਤੀਰਥ ਹੈ, ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਦਾ ਸਰੋਵਰ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਗਿਆਨ (-ਜਲ) ਦਾ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ (ਹੋਰ ਸਾਰੇ ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਦੇ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਨਾਲੋਂ) ਬਹੁਤ ਹੀ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਹੈ।
The Divine Guru is the sacred shrine of pilgrimage, and the pool of divine ambrosia; bathing in the Guru's wisdom, one experiences the Infinite.
ਗੁਰਦੇਵਕਰਤਾਸਭਿਪਾਪਹਰਤਾਗੁਰਦੇਵਪਤਿਤਪਵਿਤਕਰਾ॥
ਗੁਰੂ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਹੈ, ਸਾਰੇ ਪਾਪਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਵਿਕਾਰੀ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ (ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ) ਨੂੰ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ।
The Divine Guru is the Creator, and the Destroyer of all sins; the Divine Guru is the Purifier of sinners.
ਗੁਰਦੇਵਆਦਿਜੁਗਾਦਿਜੁਗੁਜੁਗੁਗੁਰਦੇਵਮੰਤੁਹਰਿਜਪਿਉਧਰਾ॥
ਜਦੋਂ ਤੋਂ ਜਗਤ ਬਣਿਆ ਹੈ ਗੁਰੂ ਸ਼ੂਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਹਰੇਕ ਜੁਗ ਵਿਚ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼-ਦਾਤਾ) ਹੈ। ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਜਪ ਕੇ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਦੇ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਲਹਿਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਜਾਈਦਾ ਹੈ।
The Divine Guru existed at the primal beginning, throughout the ages, in each and every age. The Divine Guru is the Mantra of the Lord's Name; chanting it, one is saved.
ਗੁਰਦੇਵਸੰਗਤਿਪ੍ਰਭਮੇਲਿਕਰਿਕਿਰਪਾਹਮਮੂੜਪਾਪੀਜਿਤੁਲਗਿਤਰਾ॥
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰ, ਸਾਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਦੇਹ, ਤਾ ਕਿ ਅਸੀਂ ਮੂਰਖ ਪਾਪੀ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ (ਰਹਿ ਕੇ) ਤਰ ਜਾਈਏ।
O God, please be merciful to me, that I may be with the Divine Guru; I am a foolish sinner, but holding onto Him, I am carried across.
ਗੁਰਦੇਵਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁਪਰਮੇਸਰੁਗੁਰਦੇਵਨਾਨਕਹਰਿਨਮਸਕਰਾ॥੧॥
ਗੁਰੂ ਪਰਮੇਸਰ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਰੂਪ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ (ਸਦਾ) ਨਮਸਕਾਰ ਕਰਨੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
The Divine Guru is the True Guru, the Supreme Lord God, the Transcendent Lord; Nanak bows in humble reverence to the Lord, the Divine Guru. ||1||

ਆਪਹਿਕੀਆਕਰਾਇਆਆਪਹਿਕਰਨੈਜੋਗੁ॥
ਸਾਰੀ ਜਗਤ-ਰਚਨਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ, ਆਪ ਹੀ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਸਮਰੱਥਾ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ।
He Himself acts, and causes others to act; He Himself can do everything.
ਨਾਨਕਏਕੋਰਵਿਰਹਿਆਦੂਸਰਹੋਆਨਹੋਗੁ॥੧॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸਾਰੇ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਦੂਸਰਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
O Nanak, the One Lord is pervading everywhere; there has never been any other, and there never shall be. ||1||

ਓਅੰਸਾਧਸਤਿਗੁਰਨਮਸਕਾਰੰ॥
ਸਾਡੀ ਉਸ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਨਮਸਕਾਰ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਗੁਰੂ-ਰੂਪ ਧਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ONG: I humbly bow in reverence to the One Universal Creator, to the Holy True Guru.
ਆਦਿਮਧਿਅੰਤਿਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੰ॥
ਜੋ ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਵਿਚ ਭੀ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸੀ, ਹੁਣ ਭੀ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਹੈ, ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਅੰਤ ਵਿਚ ਭੀ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਰਹੇਗਾ।
In the beginning, in the middle, and in the end, He is the Formless Lord.
ਆਪਹਿਸੁੰਨਆਪਹਿਸੁਖਆਸਨ॥
(ਜਦੋਂ ਜਗਤ ਦੀ ਹਸਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ) ਨਿਰੀ ਇਕੱਲ-ਰੂਪ ਭੀ ਉਹ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪ ਹੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੁਖ-ਸਰੂਪ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
He Himself is in the absolute state of primal meditation; He Himself is in the seat of peace.
ਆਪਹਿਸੁਨਤਆਪਹੀਜਾਸਨ॥
ਤਦੋਂ ਆਪਣੀ ਸੋਭਾ ਸੁਣਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਭੀ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
He Himself listens to His Own Praises.
ਆਪਨਆਪੁਆਪਹਿਉਪਾਇਓ॥
ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਦਿੱਸਦੇ ਸਰੂਪ ਵਿਚ ਲਿਆਉਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਭੀ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਹੈ,
He Himself created Himself.
ਆਪਹਿਬਾਪਆਪਹੀਮਾਇਓ॥
ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਆਪਣੀ) ਮਾਂ ਹੈ, ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਆਪਣਾ) ਪਿਤਾ ਹੈ।
He is His Own Father, He is His Own Mother.
ਆਪਹਿਸੂਖਮਆਪਹਿਅਸਥੂਲਾ॥
ਅਣ-ਦਿੱਸਦੇ ਤੇ ਦਿੱਸਦੇ ਸਰੂਪ ਵਾਲਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਹੈ।
He Himself is subtle and etheric; He Himself is manifest and obvious.
ਲਖੀਨਜਾਈਨਾਨਕਲੀਲਾ॥੧॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਇਹ ਜਗ-ਰਚਨਾ ਵਾਲੀ) ਖੇਡ ਬਿਆਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ ॥੧॥
O Nanak, His wondrous play cannot be understood. ||1||
ਕਰਿਕਿਰਪਾਪ੍ਰਭਦੀਨਦਇਆਲਾ॥
ਹੇ ਦੀਨਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਦਇਆ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੇਰੇ ਉਤੇ ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰ।
O God, Merciful to the meek, please be kind to me,
ਤੇਰੇਸੰਤਨਕੀਮਨੁਹੋਇਰਵਾਲਾ॥ਰਹਾਉ॥
ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਤੇਰੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਧੂੜ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹੇ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
that my mind might become the dust of the feet of Your Saints. ||Pause||

Shalok:
ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰਆਕਾਰਆਪਿਨਿਰਗੁਨਸਰਗੁਨਏਕ॥
ਆਕਾਰ-ਰਹਿਤ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਜਗਤ-) ਆਕਾਰ ਬਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ ਰੂਪ ਵਿਚ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਤਿੰਨ ਸੁਭਾਵਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਜਗਤ-ਰਚਨਾ ਰਚ ਕੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਤਿੰਨ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
He Himself is formless, and also formed; the One Lord is without attributes, and also with attributes.
ਏਕਹਿਏਕਬਖਾਨਨੋਨਾਨਕਏਕਅਨੇਕ॥੧॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪਣੇ ਇਕ ਸਰੂਪ ਤੋਂ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਰੂਪ ਬਣਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਪਰ ਇਹ ਅਨੇਕ ਰੂਪ ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਖਰੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਨ) ਇਹੀ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਇਕ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਆਪ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
Describe the One Lord as One, and Only One; O Nanak, He is the One, and the many. ||1||

ਓਅੰਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਕੀਓਅਕਾਰਾ॥
ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਬਣਨ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਜਗਤ-ਰਚਨਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ।
ONG: The One Universal Creator created the Creation through the Word of the Primal Guru.
ਏਕਹਿਸੂਤਿਪਰੋਵਨਹਾਰਾ॥
ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵ-ਜੰਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਇਕੋ ਹੀ ਹੁਕਮ-ਧਾਗੇ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰੋ ਰੱਖਣ ਦੇ ਸਮਰੱਥ ਹੈ।
He strung it upon His one thread.
ਭਿੰਨਭਿੰਨਤ੍ਰੈਗੁਣਬਿਸਥਾਰੰ॥
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਤਿੰਨ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਵੱਖ ਵੱਖ ਖਿਲਾਰਾ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ।
He created the diverse expanse of the three qualities.
ਨਿਰਗੁਨਤੇਸਰਗੁਨਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਾਰੰ॥
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਅਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟ ਰੂਪ ਤੋਂ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਜਗਤ ਰਚਿਆ ਹੈ।
From formless, He appeared as form.
ਸਗਲਭਾਤਿਕਰਿਕਰਹਿਉਪਾਇਓ॥
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੂੰ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ (ਅਨੇਕਾਂ) ਕਿਸਮਾਂ ਬਣਾ ਕੇ ਜਗਤ-ਉਤਪੱਤੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ।
The Creator has created the creation of all sorts.
ਜਨਮਮਰਨਮਨਮੋਹੁਬਢਾਇਓ॥
ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਮੂਲ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਭੀ ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਵਧਾਇਆ ਹੈ,
The attachment of the mind has led to birth and death.
ਦੁਹੂਭਾਤਿਤੇਆਪਿਨਿਰਾਰਾ॥
ਪਰ ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਖਰਾ ਹੈਂ।
He Himself is above both, untouched and unaffected.
ਨਾਨਕਅੰਤੁਨਪਾਰਾਵਾਰਾ॥੨॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ-) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਉਰਲੇ ਪਰਲੇ ਬੰਨੇ ਦਾ ਅੰਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ॥੨॥
O Nanak, He has no end or limitation. ||2||

ਸੇਈਸਾਹਭਗਵੰਤਸੇਸਚੁਸੰਪੈਹਰਿਰਾਸਿ॥
(ਜੀਵ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਵਣਜ ਕਰਨ ਆਏ ਹਨ) ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਪਾਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ ਹੈ, ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਵਣਜ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ) ਪੂੰਜੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹੀ ਸਾਹੂਕਾਰ ਹਨ, ਉਹੀ ਧਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਹਨ।
Those who gather Truth, and the riches of the Lord's Name, are rich and very fortunate.
ਨਾਨਕਸਚੁਸੁਚਿਪਾਈਐਤਿਹਸੰਤਨਕੈਪਾਸਿ॥੧॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਅਜਿਹੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ ਤੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰਤਾ ਹਾਸਲ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
O Nanak, truthfulness and purity are obtained from Saints such as these. ||1||

ਸਸਾਸਤਿਸਤਿਸਤਿਸੋਊ॥
ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ,
SASSA: True, True, True is that Lord.
ਸਤਿਪੁਰਖਤੇਭਿੰਨਨਕੋਊ॥
ਉਸ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਖਰੀ ਹਸਤੀ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।
No one is separate from the True Primal Lord.
ਸੋਊਸਰਨਿਪਰੈਜਿਹਪਾਯੰ॥
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪਣੀ ਸਰਨੀ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹੀ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
They alone enter the Lord's Sanctuary, whom the Lord inspires to enter.
ਸਿਮਰਿਸਿਮਰਿਗੁਨਗਾਇਸੁਨਾਯੰ॥
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਸੁਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
Meditating, meditating in remembrance, they sing and preach the Glorious Praises of the Lord.
ਸੰਸੈਭਰਮੁਨਹੀਕਛੁਬਿਆਪਤ॥
ਕੋਈ ਸਹਮ ਕੋਈ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਤੇ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਦਾ, (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ।)
Doubt and skepticism do not affect them at all.
ਪ੍ਰਗਟੁਪ੍ਰਤਾਪੁਤਾਹੂਕੋਜਾਪਤ॥
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਤਾਪ ਪ੍ਰਤੱਖ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ।
They behold the manifest glory of the Lord.
ਸੋਸਾਧੂਇਹਪਹੁਚਨਹਾਰਾ॥
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਸ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਤੇ ਪਹੁੰਚਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਧੂ ਜਾਣੋ।

ਧਨੁਧਨੁਕਹਾਪੁਕਾਰਤੇਮਾਇਆਮੋਹਸਭਕੂਰ॥
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਕਿਉਂ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਧਨ ਇਕੱਠਾ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਹੀ ਕੂਕਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹੋ? ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਤਾਂ ਝੂਠਾ ਹੀ ਹੈ (ਇਸ ਧਨ ਨੇ ਸਦਾ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਨਿਭਣਾ)।
