ਮਮਕਥਾਨਤਿਨਕਹੀਯੋਪ੍ਰਬੀਨ॥
ਹੇ ਸੁਜਾਨ! ਮੇਰੀ ਕਥਾ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਨਾ ਕਹੀਂ,
ਸੁਨਿਮਰਯੋਪੁਤ੍ਰਤੇਊਹੋਹਿਛੀਨ॥੨੩॥
(ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਉਹ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਦਾ ਮਰਨਾ ਸੁਣਦਿਆਂ ਨਿਰਬਲ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਮਰ ਜਾਣਗੇ ॥੨੩॥
“Do not say anything me to them, otherwise they will die in extreme agony.”23.
ਇਹਭਾਤਜਬੈਦਿਜਕਹੈਬੈਨ॥
ਜਦੋਂ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਬਚਨ ਕਹੇ,
ਜਲਸੁਨਤਭੂਪਚੁਐਚਲੇਨੈਨ॥
(ਤਾਂ) ਸੁਣਦਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਰਾਜੇ ਦੀਆਂ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਜਲ ਚੋਣ ਲੱਗਿਆ।
When Shravan Kumar said these words to the king about giving (to his blind parents) then tears gushed out of his eyes.
ਧ੍ਰਿਗਮੋਹਜਿਨਸੁਕੀਨੋਕੁਕਰਮ॥
(ਦਸ਼ਰਥ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ-) ਮੈਨੂੰ ਧ੍ਰਿਕਾਰ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਅਜਿਹਾ ਮਾੜਾ ਕਰਮ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ,
ਹਤਿਭਯੋਰਾਜਅਰੁਗਯੋਧਰਮ॥੨੪॥
ਜਿਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਰਾਜ ਨਸ਼ਟ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਧਰਮ ਭ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ॥੨੪॥
The king said, “It is a disgrace for me that I have done such a deed, my royal merit has been destroyed and I am devoid of Dharma.”24.
ਜਬਲਯੋਭੂਪਤਿਹਸਰਨਿਕਾਰ॥
ਜਦੋਂ ਰਾਜੇ ਨੇ (ਉਸ ਦੀ ਦੇਹ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਤੀਰ ਕੱਢ ਲਿਆ
ਤਬਤਜੇਪ੍ਰਾਣਮੁਨਬਰਉਦਾਰ॥
ਤਦੇ ਮਹਾਨ ਮੁਨੀ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਤਿਆਗ ਦਿੱਤੇ।
When the king pulled out Shravan from the pool, then that ascetic breathed his last.
ਪੁਨਭਯੋਰਾਵਮਨਮੈਉਦਾਸ॥
ਫਿਰ ਰਾਜਾ ਮਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਦਾਸ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ
ਗ੍ਰਿਹਪਲਟਜਾਨਕੀਤਜੀਆਸ॥੨੫॥
ਅਤੇ ਘਰ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਤਣ ਦੀ ਆਸ ਹੀ ਛੱਡ ਦਿੱਤੀ ॥੨੫॥
Then the king became very sad and abandoned the idea of returning to his home.25.
ਜੀਅਠਟੀਕਿਧਾਰੋਜੋਗਭੇਸ॥
ਮਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਧਾਰ ਲਿਆ ਕਿ ਯੋਗ ਭੇਸ ਨੂੰ ਧਾਰ ਲਵਾਂ
ਕਹੂੰਬਸੌਜਾਇਬਨਿਤਿਆਗਿਦੇਸ॥
ਅਤੇ ਦੇਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਤਿਆਗ ਕੇ ਕਿਤੇ ਜੰਗਲਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਜਾ ਵਸਾਂ।
He thought in his mind that he may wear the garb of Yogi and abide in the forest forsaking his royal duties.
ਕਿਹਕਾਜਮੋਰਯਹਰਾਜਸਾਜ॥
ਮੇਰਾ ਇਹ ਰਾਜ ਸਾਜ ਕਿਸ ਕੰਮ ਹੈ,
ਦਿਜਮਾਰਿਕੀਯੋਜਿਨਅਸਕੁਕਾਜ॥੨੬॥
ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਕੇ, ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਕੁਕਰਮ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ ॥੨੬॥
My roayal duties are now meaningless for me, when I have committed a bad deed by killing a Brahmin.26.
ਇਹਭਾਤਕਹੀਪੁਨਿਨ੍ਰਿਪਪ੍ਰਬੀਨ॥
ਸੁਜਾਨ ਰਾਜੇ ਨੇ ਫਿਰ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ (ਗੱਲ) ਕਹੀ
ਸਭਜਗਤਿਕਾਲਕਰਮੈਅਧੀਨ॥
ਕਿ ਸਾਰੇ ਜਗਤ ਦੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਆ ਕਾਲ ਦੇ ਅਧੀਨ ਹੈ।
The king then uttered these words, ‘I have brought under my control the situations of all the world, but now what hath been committed by me?
ਅਬਕਰੋਕਛੂਐਸੋਉਪਾਇ॥
ਹੁਣ ਕੁਝ ਅਜਿਹਾ ਉਪਾ ਕਰਾਂ,
ਜਾਤੇਸੁਬਚੈਤਿਹਤਾਤਮਾਇ॥੨੭॥
ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਾਤਾ-ਪਿਤਾ ਬਚ ਜਾਣ ॥੨੭॥
‘Now I should take such measures, that may cause his parents to survive.’27.
ਭਰਿਲਯੋਕੁੰਭਸਿਰਪੈਉਠਾਇ॥
ਰਾਜੇ ਨੇ ਘੜੇ ਨੂੰ (ਪਾਣੀ ਨਾਲ) ਭਰ ਕੇ ਸਿਰ ਉੱਤੇ ਚੁੱਕ ਲਿਆ
ਤਹਗਯੋਜਹਾਦਿਜਤਾਤਮਾਇ॥
ਅਤੇ ਉਥੇ ਗਿਆ, ਜਿਥੇ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਦੇ ਮਾਤਾ-ਪਿਤਾ ਪਏ ਸਨ।
The king filled the pitcher with water and lifted it on his head and reached at the spot, where the parents of Shravan had been lying.
ਜਬਗਯੋਨਿਕਟਤਿਨਕੇਸੁਧਾਰ॥
ਜਦ ਸਾਵਧਾਨੀ ਨਾਲ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਗਿਆ,
ਤਬਲਖੀਦੁਹੂੰਤਿਹਪਾਵਚਾਰ॥੨੮॥
ਤਦ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੋਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਪੈਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਆਹਟ ਸੁਣ ਲਈ ॥੨੮॥
When the king reached near them with very slow steps, then they heard the voice of the moving footsteps.28.
ਦਿਜਬਾਚਰਾਜਾਸੋਂ॥
ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਨੇ ਰਾਜੇ ਪ੍ਰਤਿ ਕਿਹਾ-
The speech of the Brahmin addressed to the King :
ਪਾਧੜੀਛੰਦ॥
ਪਾਧੜੀ ਛੰਦ
PADDHRAI STANZA
ਕਹਕਹੋਪੁਤ੍ਰਲਾਗੀਅਵਾਰ॥
ਹੇ ਪੁੱਤਰ! ਦਸ, ਦੇਰੀ ਕਿਉਂ ਲੱਗੀ ਹੈ?
ਸੁਨਿਰਹਿਓਮੋਨਭੂਪਤਉਦਾਰ॥
(ਇਹ) ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਭਲਾ ਰਾਜਾ ਚੁੱਪ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ।
“O Son! Tell us the reason for so much delay. “Hearing these words the large-hearted king remained silent.
ਫਿਰਿਕਹਯੋਕਾਹਿਬੋਲਤਨਪੂਤ॥
(ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਨੇ) ਮੁੜ ਕਿਹਾ-ਪੁੱਤਰ! ਬੋਲਦਾ ਕਿਉਂ ਨਹੀਂ।
ਚੁਪਰਹੇਰਾਜਲਹਿਕੈਕਸੂਤ॥੨੯॥
ਕਸੂਤੀ ਸਥਿਤੀ ਸਮਝ ਕੇ ਰਾਜਾ ਚੁੱਪ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ॥੨੯॥
They again said, “O son! Why do you not speak?” The king, fearing his reply to be unfavorable, again remained silent.29.
ਨ੍ਰਿਪਦੀਓਪਾਨਤਿਹਪਾਨਜਾਇ॥
ਰਾਜੇ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹੱਥ ਵਿੱਚ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਫੜਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ।
ਚਕਿਰਹੇਅੰਧਤਿਹਕਰਛੁਹਾਇ॥
ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ (ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ) ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹੱਥਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਛੋਹ ਕੇ ਹੈਰਾਨ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ।
Coming near them, the king gave them water then on touching his hand those blind persons, .
ਕਰਕੋਪਕਹਿਯੋਤੂਆਹਿਕੋਇ॥
(ਫਿਰ) ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਕਰਕੇ ਕਿਹਾ-(ਸੱਚ ਦੱਸ) ਤੂੰ ਕੌਣ ਹੈਂ?
ਇਮਸੁਨਤਸਬਦਨ੍ਰਿਪਦਯੋਰੋਇ॥੩੦॥
ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਬੋਲ ਸੁਣਦਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਰਾਜਾ ਰੋ ਪਿਆ ॥੩੦॥
Getting bewildered, asked angrily about his identity. Hearing these words, the king began to weep.30
ਰਾਜਾਬਾਚਦਿਜਸੋਂ॥
ਰਾਜੇ ਨੇ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਪ੍ਰਤਿ ਕਿਹਾ-
The speech of the King addressed to the Brahmin:

ਪਾਧੜੀ ਛੰਦ
PADDHRAI STANZA
ਹਉਪੁਤ੍ਰਘਾਤਤਵਬ੍ਰਹਮਣੇਸ॥
ਹੇ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਠ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ! ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਦਾ ਘਾਤਕ ਹਾਂ,
ਜਿਹਹਨਿਯੋਸ੍ਰਵਣਤਵਸੁਤਸੁਦੇਸ॥
ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਸ੍ਰਵਣ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਦੇਸ਼ ਵਿੱਚ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਹੈ।
“O eminent Brahmin! I am the killer of your son, I am the one who hast killed your son.”
ਮੈਪਰਯੋਸਰਣਦਸਰਥਰਾਇ॥
ਮੈਂ ਦਸ਼ਰਥ ਰਾਜਾ (ਤੇਰੀ) ਚਰਨੀਂ ਪਿਆ ਹਾਂ,
ਚਾਹੋਸੁਕਰੋਮੋਹਿਬਿਪਆਇ॥੩੧॥
ਹੇ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ! ਜੋ (ਕਰਨਾ) ਚਾਹੋ, ਉਹੀ ਮੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ (ਵਰਤਾਉ) ਕਰੋ ॥੩੧॥
“I am Dasrath, seeking your refuge, O Brahmin! Do to me whatever you wish.31.
ਰਾਖੈਤੁਰਾਖੁਮਾਰੈਤੁਮਾਰੁ॥
ਰਖਣਾ ਚਾਹੋ ਤਾਂ ਰੱਖੋ, ਮਾਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੋ ਤਾਂ ਮਾਰੋ,
ਮੈਪਰੋਸਰਣਤੁਮਰੈਦੁਆਰਿ॥
ਮੈਂ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਦਰ 'ਤੇ ਸ਼ਰਨੀ ਪਿਆ ਹਾਂ।
“If you want, you may protect me, otherwise kill me, I am under your shelter, I am here before you.”
ਤਬਕਹੀਕਿਨੋਦਸਰਥਰਾਇ॥
ਤਦ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੋਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਦਸ਼ਰਥ ਰਾਜੇ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਹਾ-
ਬਹੁਕਾਸਟਅਗਨਦ੍ਵੈਦੇਇਮੰਗਾਇ॥੩੨॥
ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਲੱਕੜਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਅੱਗ ਇਹ ਦੋਵੇਂ (ਚੀਜ਼ਾਂ) ਮੰਗਵਾ ਦੇ ॥੩੨॥
Then the king Dasrath, on their bidding, asked some attendant to bring good deal of wood for burning.32.
ਤਬਲੀਯੋਅਧਿਕਕਾਸਟਮੰਗਾਇ॥
ਤਦ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਲੱਕੜਾਂ ਮੰਗਵਾ ਲਈਆਂ,
ਚੜਬੈਠੇਤਹਾਸਲ੍ਰਹ੍ਰਹਕਉਬਨਾਇ॥
ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਚਿੱਖਾ (ਸਲ੍ਹ) ਬਣਾ ਕੇ (ਦੋਵੇਂ ਉਸ ਉੱਤੇ) ਚੜ੍ਹ ਬੈਠੇ।
A great load of wood was brought, and they (the blind parents) got prepared the funeral pyres and sat on them.
ਚਹੂੰਓਰਦਈਜੁਆਲਾਜਗਾਇ॥
ਦੋਹਾਂ ਪਾਸਿਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਅੱਗ ਮਚਾ ਦਿੱਤੀ,
ਦਿਜਜਾਨਗਈਪਾਵਕਸਿਰਾਇ॥੩੩॥
ਪਰ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਜਾਣ ਕੇ ਅੱਗ ਠੰਡੀ ਹੋ ਗਈ ॥੩੩॥
The fire was lighted on all the four sides and in this way those Brahmins caused the end of their lives.33.
ਤਬਜੋਗਅਗਨਿਤਨਤੇਉਪ੍ਰਾਜ॥
ਤਦ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਤੋਂ ਯੋਗ ਅਗਨੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੀ
ਦੁਹੂੰਮਰਨਜਰਨਕੋਸਜਿਯੋਸਾਜ॥
ਅਤੇ ਦੋਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਸੜ ਕੇ ਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਸਾਜ ਬਣਾ ਲਿਆ।
They created the fire of Yoga form their bodies and wanted to be reduced to ashes.
