ਪੁਨਿਸੈਨਸਮਿਤ੍ਰਨਰੇਸਬਰੰ॥
ਫਿਰ (ਇਕ) 'ਸਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਸੈਨ' ਨਾਮ ਵਾਲਾ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਠ ਰਾਜਾ ਹੋਇਆ,
ਜਿਹਜੁਧਲਯੋਮਦ੍ਰਦੇਸਹਰੰ॥
ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਯੁੱਧ ਕਰਕੇ ਮਦਰ ਦੇਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਜਿੱਤ ਲਿਆ ਸੀ।
The mighty and glorious king Sumitra, was the conqueror of Madra Desha.
ਸੁਮਿਤ੍ਰਾਤਿਹਧਾਮਭਈਦੁਹਿਤਾ॥
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਘਰ 'ਸੁਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ' ਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਕੰਨਿਆ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਈ,
ਜਿਹਜੀਤਲਈਸਸਸੂਰਪ੍ਰਭਾ॥੧੨॥
ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਚੰਦ੍ਰਮਾ ਅਤੇ ਸੂਰਜ ਦੀ ਸੁੰਦਰਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਹਰ ਲਿਆ ॥੧੨॥
He had a daughter named Sumitra in his home. That virgin was so winsome and radiant that she seemed to have conquered the luster of the sun and moon.12.
ਸੋਊਬਾਰਿਸਬੁਧਭਈਜਬਹੀ॥
ਉਸ ਬਾਲਿਕਾ ਨੇ ਜਦੋਂ ਹੋਸ਼ ਸੰਭਾਲੀ,
ਅਵਧੇਸਹਚੀਨਬਰਿਓਤਬਹੀ॥
ਤਦੋਂ (ਉਸ ਨੇ ਵੀ) ਮਹਾਰਾਜ ਦਸ਼ਰਥ ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣ ਕੇ ਵਰ ਲਿਆ।
When she grew of age, she also married the king of Oudh.
ਗਨਯਾਹਭਯੋਕਸਟੁਆਰਨ੍ਰਿਪੰ॥
ਇਹ ਕਥਨ ਕਰਕੇ ਹੁਣ ਕਸ਼ਟੁਆਰ ਰਾਜੇ ਦਾ ਹਾਲ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਾਂ,
ਜਿਹਕੇਕਈਧਾਮਸੁਤਾਸੁਪ੍ਰਭੰ॥੧੩॥
ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਕੈਕਈ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਲੜਕੀ (ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਈ) ਸੀ ॥੧੩॥
The same thin happened with the king of Kaikeya, who had glorious daughter named Kaiky.13.
ਇਨਤੇਗ੍ਰਹਮੋਸੁਤਜਉਨਥੀਓ॥
(ਜਦੋਂ ਦਸ਼ਰਥ ਨੇ ਕੈਕਈ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਆਹੁਣ ਦੀ ਇੱਛਾ ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਕੀਤੀ ਤਾਂ ਰਾਜੇ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ)- ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਘਰ ਜਿਹੜਾ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ (ਉਹੀ ਰਾਜ ਦਾ ਹੱਕਦਾਰ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ)।
ਤਬਬੈਠਨਰੇਸਬਿਚਾਰਕੀਓ॥
ਤਦ ਦਸ਼ਰਥ ਰਾਜੇ ਨੇ (ਇਹ ਗੱਲ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ) ਬੈਠ ਕੇ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕੀਤਾ।
The king reflected (in his mind) about the son to be born to his daughter.
ਤਬਕੇਕਈਨਾਰਬਿਚਾਰਕਰੀ॥
ਤਦ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਪੂਰਵਕ ਕੈਕਈ ਨੂੰ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਵਜੋਂ ਪਰਨਾ ਲਿਆ,
ਜਿਹਤੇਸਸਿਸੂਰਜਸੋਭਧਰੀ॥੧੪॥
ਜਿਸ ਤੋਂ ਚੰਦ੍ਰਮਾ ਤੇ ਸੂਰਜ ਨੇ ਸ਼ੋਭਾ ਧਾਰਨ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੋਈ ਸੀ ॥੧੪॥
Kaikeyi also thoutht about it, she was extremely beautiful like the sun and moon.14.
ਤਿਹਬਯਾਹਤਮਾਗਲਏਦੁਬਰੰ॥
ਕੈਕਈ ਨੇ ਵਿਆਹ ਵੇਲੇ ਦੋ ਵਰ ਮੰਗ ਲਏ,
ਜਿਹਤੇਅਵਧੇਸਕੇਪ੍ਰਾਣਹਰੰ॥
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਰਕੇ ਦਸ਼ਰਥ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਖ਼ਤਮ ਹੋਏ।
On being married she asked for two boons from the king, which ultimately resulted in his death.
ਸਮਝੀਨਨਰੇਸਰਬਾਤਹੀਏ॥
ਮਹਾਰਾਜੇ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਗੱਲ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਨਾ ਸਮਝੀ
ਤਬਹੀਤਹਕੋਬਰਦੋਇਦੀਏ॥੧੫॥
ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਵੇਲੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਦੋ ਵਰ ਦੇਣੇ ਮੰਨ ਲਏ ॥੧੫॥
At that time, the king could not understand the mystery (of the boons) and gave his consent for them.15.
ਪੁਨਦੇਵਅਦੇਵਨਜੁਧਪਰੋ॥
ਫਿਰ ਦੇਵਤਿਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਦੈਂਤਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ (ਇਕ ਸਮੇਂ) ਯੁੱਧ ਹੋਇਆ
ਜਹਜੁਧਘਣੋਨ੍ਰਿਪਆਪਕਰੋ॥
ਜਿਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਹੁਤਾ ਯੁੱਧ ਰਾਜੇ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਕੀਤਾ।
Then once a war was waged between the gods and demons, in which the king gave a tough fight from the side of gods.
ਹਤਸਾਰਥੀਸਯੰਦਨਨਾਰਹਕਿਯੋ॥
(ਉਸ ਯੁੱਧ ਵਿੱਚ ਰਾਜੇ ਦਾ) ਸਾਰਥੀ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਗਿਆ। (ਤਾਂ ਦਸ਼ਰਥ ਦੀ) ਇਸਤਰੀ ਕੈਕਈ ਨੇ ਰਥ ਨੂੰ (ਆਪ) ਹੱਕਿਆ।
ਯਹਕੌਤਕਦੇਖਨਰੇਸਚਕਿਯੋ॥੧੬॥
ਇਸ ਕੌਤਕ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਰਾਜਾ ਦਸ਼ਰਥ ਹੈਰਾਨ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ॥੧੬॥
Then once war charioteer of the king was killed, and instead kaikeyi drave the chariot on seeing this, the king was nonplussed.16.
ਪੁਨਰੀਝਦਏਦੋਊਤੀਅਬਰੰ॥
ਫਿਰ ਰਾਜੇ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਦੋ ਵਰ ਦੇ ਦਿੱਤੇ
ਚਿਤਮੋਸੁਬਿਚਾਰਕਛੂਨਕਰੰ॥
ਅਤੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਤੀਜੇ ਦਾ ਕੁਝ ਵੀ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਨਾ ਕੀਤਾ।
The king was pleased and gave other two boons, he did not have any distrust in his mind.
ਕਹੀਨਾਟਕਮਧਚਰਿਤ੍ਰਕਥਾ॥
(ਇਹ) ਕਥਾ (ਹਨੂਮਾਨ) ਨਾਟਕ ਅਤੇ (ਰਮਾਇਣ ਆਦਿਕ) ਰਾਮ-ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ (ਵਿਸਥਾਰ ਨਾਲ) ਕਹੀ ਗਈ ਹੈ
ਜਯਦੀਨਸੁਰੇਸਨਰੇਸਜਥਾ॥੧੭॥
ਜਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਸ਼ਰਥ ਰਾਜੇ ਨੇ ਇੰਦਰ ਨੂੰ (ਦੈਂਤਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਜਿੱਤ ਕੇ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਸੀ ॥੧੭॥
How the king co-operated for the victory of Indra, the king of gods, this story has been told in the drama.17.
ਅਰਿਜੀਤਿਅਨੇਕਅਨੇਕਬਿਧੰ॥
ਦਸ਼ਰਥ ਨੇ ਅਨੇਕ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਵੈਰੀ ਜਿੱਤ ਲਏ
ਸਭਕਾਜਨਰੇਸ੍ਵਰਕੀਨਸਿਧੰ॥
ਅਤੇ ਰਾਜ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਕੰਮ ਸਿੱਧ ਕਰ ਲਏ।
The king fulfilled his heart’s desires by conquering many enemies.
ਦਿਨਰੈਣਬਿਹਾਰਤਮਧਿਬਣੰ॥
(ਦਸ਼ਰਥ ਮਹਾਰਾਜਾ) ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਜੰਗਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਸ਼ਿਕਾਰ ਲਈ ਵਿਚਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ।
ਜਲਲੈਨਦਿਜਾਇਤਹਾਸ੍ਰਵਣੰ॥੧੮॥
(ਇਕ ਦਿਨ) ਉਥੇ ਸ੍ਰਵਣ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਜਲ ਲੈਣ ਲਈ ਆਇਆ ॥੧੮॥
He passed his time mostly in the forsrts. Once a Brahmin named Sharvan Kumar was roaming there in search of water.18.
ਪਿਤਮਾਤਤਜੇਦੋਊਅੰਧਭੂਯੰ॥
(ਸ੍ਰਵਣ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ) ਦੋਹਾਂ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਮਾਤਾ ਪਿਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਧਰਤੀ ਉੱਤੇ ਛੱਡਿਆ
ਗਹਿਪਾਤ੍ਰਚਲਿਯੋਜਲੁਲੈਨਸੁਯੰ॥
ਅਤੇ ਆਪ ਬਰਤਨ ਫੜ ਕੇ ਜਲ ਲੈਣ ਲਈ ਚਲ ਪਿਆ।
Leaving his blind parents at some spot, the son had come for water, holding the pitcher in his hand.
ਮੁਨਿਨੋਦਿਤਕਾਲਸਿਧਾਰਤਹਾ॥
(ਸ੍ਰਵਣ) ਮੁਨੀ ਕਾਲ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਿਆ ਉਥੇ ਚਲਾ ਗਿਆ,
ਨ੍ਰਿਪਬੈਠਪਤਊਵਨਬਾਧਜਹਾ॥੧੯॥
ਜਿੱਥੇ ਦਸ਼ਰਥ ਰਾਜਾ ਮਚਾਨ ਬੰਨ੍ਹੀ ਬੈਠਾ ਸੀ ॥੧੯॥
That Brahmin sage was sent there by death, where the king was rresting in a tent.19.
ਭਭਕੰਤਘਟੰਅਤਿਨਾਦਿਹੁਅੰ॥
(ਪਾਣੀ ਭਰਨ ਨਾਲ) ਘੜੇ ਤੋਂ ਭਕ-ਭਕ ਦਾ ਨਾਦ ਹੋਇਆ
ਧੁਨਿਕਾਨਪਰੀਅਜਰਾਜਸੁਅੰ॥
ਤਾਂ ਅਜ ਰਾਜੇ ਦੇ ਪੁੱਤਰ (ਦਸ਼ਰਥ) ਦੇ ਕੰਨ ਵਿੱਚ (ਉਹ) ਆਵਾਜ਼ ਪਈ।
There was sound of filling the pitcher with water, which was heard by the king.
ਗਹਿਪਾਣਸੁਬਾਣਹਿਤਾਨਧਨੰ॥
(ਉਸ ਵੇਲੇ) ਹੱਥ ਵਿੱਚ ਤੀਰ ਫੜ ਕੇ, ਧਨੁਸ਼ ਵਿੱਚ ਖਿੱਚਿਆ
ਮ੍ਰਿਗਜਾਣਦਿਜੰਸਰਸੁਧਹਨੰ॥੨੦॥
ਅਤੇ ਹਿਰਨ ਸਮਝ ਕੇ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ॥੨੦॥
The king fitted the arrow in the bow and pulled it and considering the Brahmin as a deer, he shot the arrow on him and killed him.20.
ਗਿਰਗਯੋਸੁਲਗੇਸਰਸੁਧਮੁਨੰ॥
ਤੀਰ ਲਗਦਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਮੁਨੀ ਡਿੱਗ ਪਿਆ।
ਨਿਸਰੀਮੁਖਤੇਹਹਕਾਰਧੁਨੰ॥
(ਉਸ ਦੇ) ਮੂੰਹੋਂ ਹਾਹਾਕਾਰ ਦੀ ਆਵਾਜ਼ ਨਿਕਲੀ।
On being struck by the arrow, the ascetic fell down and there was sound of lamentation from his mouth.
ਮ੍ਰਿਗਨਾਤਕਹਾਨ੍ਰਿਪਜਾਇਲਹੈ॥
ਹਿਰਨ ਕਿੱਥੇ ਮਰਿਆ ਹੈ। (ਇਹ ਜਾਨਣ ਲਈ) ਰਾਜਾ (ਤਲਾਉ ਦੇ ਦੂਜੇ ਕੰਢੇ) ਗਿਆ
ਦਿਜਦੇਖਦੋਊਕਰਦਾਤਗਹੈ॥੨੧॥
ਅਤੇ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ (ਰਾਜੇ ਨੇ) ਦੋਵੇਂ ਹੱਥ ਦੰਦਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਦਬਾ ਲਏ। (ਭਾਵ ਰਾਜਾ ਦੁੱਖ ਨਾਲ ਉਦਾਸ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ॥੨੧॥
For seeing the spot, where the deer had died, the king went there, but on seeing that Brahmin, he pressed his finger under his teeth in distress.21.
ਸਰਵਣਬਾਚਿ॥
ਸ੍ਰਵਣ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ:
Speech of Shravan :
ਕਛੁਪ੍ਰਾਨਰਹੇਤਿਹਮਧਤਨੰ॥
ਸ੍ਰਵਣ ਦੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿੱਚ (ਅਜੇ) ਕੁਝ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਸਨ।
ਨਿਕਰੰਤਕਹਾਜੀਅਬਿਪ੍ਰਨ੍ਰਿਪੰ॥
ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ (ਦੀ ਦੇਹ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਨਿਕਲਦਿਆਂ ਪ੍ਰਾਣਾਂ) ਨੇ ਰਾਜੇ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਹਾ-
There were still some life-breath in the body of Shravan. In his final life-breaths, the Brahmin said to the kind:
ਮੁਰਤਾਤਰੁਮਾਤਨ੍ਰਿਚਛਪਰੇ॥
ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ (ਨ੍ਰਿਚਛ) ਮਾਤਾ ਪਿਤਾ (ਫਲਾਣੀ ਥਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ) ਪਏ ਹਨ,
ਤਿਹਪਾਨਪਿਆਇਨ੍ਰਿਪਾਧਮਰੇ॥੨੨॥
ਹੇ ਨੀਚ ਰਾਜੇ! ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਾਣੀ ਪਿਲਾ ਦੇ ॥੨੨॥
“My mother and father are blind and are lying on that side. You go there and make them drink water, so that I may die peacefully.”22.

PADDHRAI STANZA
ਬਿਨਚਛਭੂਪਦੋਊਤਾਤਮਾਤ॥
ਹੇ ਰਾਜਨ! (ਮੇਰੇ) ਦੋਵੇਂ ਮਾਤਾ-ਪਿਤਾ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਹਨ। ਤੈਨੂੰ ਇਹੀ ਗੱਲ ਕਹਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ,
ਤਿਨਦੇਹਪਾਨਤੁਹਕਹੌਂਬਾਤ॥
(ਤੂੰ) ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਪਿਲਾ ਦੇ।
“O king! both my parents are without sight, listen to me and give them water.
