ਜਾਪਣਿਤੇਗੀਂਆਰੇਮਿਆਨੋਧੂਹੀਆਂ॥
(ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੁਆਰਾ) ਮਿਆਨਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਕੱਢੀਆਂ ਹੋਈਆਂ ਤਲਵਾਰਾਂ ਆਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਤ ਹੋ ਰਹੀਆਂ ਸਨ।
It appears that the sword pulled from the scabbards are like saws.
ਜੋਧੇਵਡੇਮੁਨਾਰੇਜਾਪਨਿਖੇਤਵਿਚਿ॥
ਯੁੱਧ-ਭੂਮੀ ਵਿਚ (ਡਿਗੇ ਹੋਏ ਸੂਰਵੀਰ) ਵਡਿਆਂ ਮੁਨਾਰਿਆਂ ਵਰਗੇ (ਡਿਗੇ ਹੋਏ) ਲਗਦੇ ਸਨ।
The warriors look like high minarets in the battlefield.
ਦੇਵੀਆਪਿਸਵਾਰੇਪਬਜਵੇਹਣੇ॥
ਪਰਬਤਾਂ ਵਰਗੇ (ਦੈਂਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਦੇਵੀ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਸੀ
The goddess herself killed these mountain-like demons.
ਕਦੇਨਆਖਨਿਹਾਰੇਧਾਵਨਿਸਾਹਮਣੇ॥
(ਜੋ) ਕਦੇ ਵੀ ਮੂੰਹ ਵਿਚੋਂ 'ਹਾਰ ਗਏ' ਨਹੀਂ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਸਨ (ਅਤੇ ਦੇਵੀ ਦੇ) ਸਾਹਮਣੇ (ਸਦਾ) ਡਟਦੇ ਸਨ।
They never uttered the word 'defeat' and ran in front of the goddess.
ਦੁਰਗਾਸਭਿਸੰਘਾਰੇਰਾਕਸਖੜਗਲੈ॥੧੫॥
ਦੁਰਗਾ ਨੇ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਰਾਖਸ਼ਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਖੜਗ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਮਾਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ॥੧੫॥
Durga, holding her sword, killed all the demons.15.

ਉਮਲਿਲੱਥੇਜੋਧੇਮਾਰੂਬੱਜਿਆ॥
ਜੰਗੀ ਨਗਾਰੇ (ਮਾਰੂ) ਦੇ ਵਜਣ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਚਾਉ ਨਾਲ ਭਰੇ ਯੋਧੇ (ਯੁੱਧ-ਭੂਮੀ ਵਿਚ) ਨਿਤਰ ਆਏ।
The fatal martial music sounded and the warriors came in the battlefield with enthusiasm.
ਬੱਦਲਜਿਉਮਹਿਖਾਸੁਰਰਣਵਿਚਿਗੱਜਿਆ॥
ਬਦਲ ਵਾਂਗ ਮਹਿਖਾਸੁਰ ਰਣ ਵਿਚ ਗਜਿਆ (ਅਤੇ ਬੜਕ ਮਾਰਨ ਲਗਾ ਕਿ)
Mahishasura thundered in the field like the cloud;
ਇੰਦ੍ਰਜੇਹਾਜੋਧਾਮੈਥਉਭੱਜਿਆ॥
ਇੰਦਰ ਵਰਗਾ ਯੋਧਾ ਮੇਰੇ ਕੋਲੋਂ ਭਜ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।
"The warrior like Indra fled from me;
ਕਉਣਵਿਚਾਰੀਦੁਰਗਾਜਿਨਿਰਣੁਸੱਜਿਆ॥੧੬॥
(ਫਿਰ) ਵਿਚਾਰੀ ਦੁਰਗਾ ਕੌਣ ਹੈ? ਜਿਸ ਨੇ (ਮੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ) ਯੁੱਧ ਕਰਨ (ਦੀ ਹਿੰਮਤ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ) ॥੧੬॥
Who is this wretched Durga, who hath come to start war with me?"16.
ਪਉੜੀ॥
ਵੱਜੇਢੋਲਨਗਾਰੇਦਲਾਂਮੁਕਾਬਲਾ॥
ਢੋਲ ਅਤੇ ਨਗਾਰੇ ਵਜੇ ਅਤੇ ਦਲਾਂ ਦਾ ਮੁਕਾਬਲਾ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ।
The drums and trumpets have sounded and the armies have attacked each other.
ਤੀਰਫਿਰੈਂਰੈਬਾਰੇਆਮ੍ਹੋਸਾਮ੍ਹਣੇ॥
ਆਹਮੋ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਤੀਰ ਅਗਵਾਈ ('ਰੈਬਾਰੇ') ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਸਨ।
The arrows move opposite to each other guidingly.
ਅਗਣਤਬੀਰਸੰਘਾਰੇਲਗਦੀਕੈਬਰੀਂ॥
ਤੀਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਲਗਣ ਨਾਲ ਅਣਗਿਣਤ ਵੀਰ ਮਾਰੇ ਗਏ ਸਨ।
With the infliction of arrows countless warriors have been killed.
ਡਿੱਗੇਜਾਣਿਮੁਨਾਰੇਮਾਰੇਬਿੱਜੁਦੇ॥
(ਇੰਜ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ) ਮਾਨੋ ਬਿਜਲੀ ਦੇ ਮਾਰੇ ਹੋਏ ਮੁਨਾਰੇ ਡਿਗੇ ਪਏ ਹੋਣ।
Falling like the minarets smote by lightning.
ਖੁੱਲੀਂਵਾਲੀਂਦੈਤਅਹਾੜੇਸਭੇਸੂਰਮੇ॥
ਸਾਰੇ ਦੈਂਤ ਸੂਰਮੇ ਖੁਲ੍ਹੇ ਹੋਏ ਵਾਲਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਹਾ-ਹਾ-ਕਾਰ ਮਚਾ ਰਹੇ ਸਨ,
All the demon-fighters with untied hair shouted in agony.
ਸੁੱਤੇਜਾਣਿਜਟਾਲੇਭੰਗਾਂਖਾਇਕੈ॥੧੭॥
(ਇੰਜ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ) ਮਾਨੋ ਜਟਾਵਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਸਾਧ ਭੰਗਾਂ ਖਾ ਕੇ ਸੁਤੇ ਪਏ ਹੋਣ ॥੧੭॥
It seems that the hermits with matted locks are sleeping after eating the intoxicating hemps.17.

ਦੁਹਾਂਕੰਧਾਰਾਂਮੁਹਜੁੜੇਨਾਲਿਧਉਸਾਭਾਰੀ॥
ਭਾਰੀ ਧੌਂਸਿਆ (ਦੇ ਵਜਦਿਆਂ ਹੀ) ਦੋਹਾਂ ਪਾਸਿਆਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਕਤਾਰਾਂ ਆਹਮੋ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਡਟ ਗਈਆਂ।
Both the armies are facing each other alongwith the resounding big trumpet.
ਕੜਕਉੱਠਿਆਫਉਜਤੇਵਡਾਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ॥
ਫ਼ੌਜ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਵੱਡਾ ਹੰਕਾਰੀ (ਸੂਰਮਾ ਮਹਿਖਾਸੁਰ) ਕੜਕ ਉਠਿਆ
The highly egoist warrior of the army thundered.
ਲੈਕੈਚਲਿਆਸੂਰਮੇਨਾਲਿਵਡੇਹਜਾਰੀ॥
ਅਤੇ (ਆਪਣੇ) ਨਾਲ ਹਜ਼ਾਰਾਂ ਵਡੇ ਵਡੇ ਸੂਰਮੇ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਚਲ ਪਿਆ (ਹਜ਼ਾਰੀ ਦਾ ਅਰਥ ਹਜ਼ਾਰ-ਹਜ਼ਾਰ ਸੈਨਿਕਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਕਮਾਨ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਸੈਨਾ-ਨਾਇਕ ਵੀ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ)।
He is moving towards the war-arena with thousands of mighty warriors.
ਮਿਆਨੋਖੰਡਾਧੂਹਿਆਮਹਿਖਾਸੁਰਭਾਰੀ॥
ਮਹਿਖਾਸੁਰ ਨੇ ਮਿਆਨ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਭਾਰੀ ਖੰਡਾ ਖਿਚ ਲਿਆ।
Mahishasura pulled out his huge double-edged sword from his scabbard.
ਉੱਮਲਿਲੱਥੇਸੂਰਮੇਮਾਰਮਚੀਕਰਾਰੀ॥
(ਯੁੱਧ-ਭੂਮੀ ਵਿਚ) ਉਤਸਾਹ ਨਾਲ ਭਰੇ ਹੋਏ ਸੂਰਮੇ ਉਤਰ ਆਏ ਅਤੇ ਤਕੜੀ ਮਾਰ-ਕਾਟ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਹੋ ਗਈ।
The fighters entered the field enthusiastically and there occurred formidable fighting.
ਜਾਪੇਚੱਲੇਰੱਤਦੇਸਲਲੇਜਟਧਾਰੀ॥੧੮॥
(ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਿਰਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਇਉਂ) ਲਹੂ ਵਗ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ (ਜਿਉਂ) ਸ਼ਿਵ ਦੀਆਂ ਜਟਾਵਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ (ਗੰਗਾ ਦੇ) ਜਲ ਦੀਆਂ ਧਾਰਾਂ ਵਗ ਰਹੀਆਂ ਹੋਣ ॥੧੮॥
It appears that the blood flows like the water (of Ganges) from the tangled hair of Shiva.18.

ਸੱਟਪਈਜਮਧਾਣੀਦਲਾਂਮੁਕਾਬਲਾ॥
ਦੋਹਰੇ ਨਗਾਰੇ (ਜਮਧਾਣੀ) ਉਤੇ ਸੱਟ ਵਜੀ ਅਤੇ ਦਲਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮੁਕਾਬਲਾ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ।
When the trumpet, enveloped by the hide of the male buffalo, the vehicle of Yama, sounded, the armies attacked each other.
ਧੂਹਿਲਈਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਣੀਦੁਰਗਾਮਿਆਨਤੇ॥
ਦੇਵੀ ਦੁਰਗਾ ਨੇ ਮਿਆਨ ਤੋਂ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਨ ਧੂਹ ਲਈ।
Durga pulled her sword from the scabbard.
ਚੰਡੀਰਾਕਸਖਾਣੀਵਾਹੀਦੈਤਨੂੰ॥
ਚੰਡੀ ਨੇ ਰਾਖਸ਼ਾਂ ਦਾ ਨਾਸ਼ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੀ (ਤਲਵਾਰ) ਦੈਂਤ ਉਤੇ ਚਲਾਈ।
She struck the demon with that Chandi, the devourer of demons (that is the sword).
ਕੋਪਰਚੂਰਿਚਵਾਣੀਲੱਥੀਕਰਗਲੈ॥
(ਉਹ ਤਲਵਾਰ ਦੈਂਤ ਦੀ) ਖੋਪਰੀ ਅਤੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਨੂੰ ਚੂਰ-ਚੂਰ ਕਰਦੀ ਪਿੰਜਰ ('ਕਰਗ') ਤਕ ਧਸ ਗਈ।
It broke the skull and face into pieces and pierced through the skeleton.
ਪਾਖਰਤੁਰਾਪਲਾਣੀਰੜਕੀਧਰਤਜਾਇ॥
(ਫਿਰ) (ਘੋੜੇ ਉਪਰ ਪਾਈ ਹੋਈ ਲੋਹੇ ਦੀ) ਝੁਲ ਅਤੇ ਕਾਠੀ (ਨੂੰ ਚੀਰਦੀ ਹੋਈ) ਧਰਤੀ ਉਤੇ ਜਾ ਵਜੀ।
And it further pierced through the saddle and caparison of the horse, and struck on the earth supported by the Bull (Dhaul).
ਲੈਂਦੀਅਘਾਸਿਧਾਣੀਸਿੰਗਾਂਧਉਲਦਿਆਂ॥
(ਉਥੋਂ) ਲਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੋਈ (ਧਰਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਚੁਕੀ ਖੜੇ) ਬਲਦ ਦੇ ਸਿੰਗਾਂ ਤਕ ਜਾ ਪਹੁੰਚੀ।
It moved further and struck the horns of the Bull.
ਕੂਰਮਸਿਰਲਹਿਲਾਣੀਦੁਸਮਨਮਾਰਿਕੈ॥
(ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਦੁਸ਼ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਕੇ ਕਛੂਏ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਵਿਚ ਚਮਕੀ।
Then it struck on the Tortoise supporting the Bull and thus killing the enemy.
ਵੱਢੇਗਨਤਿਖਾਣੀਮੂਏਖੇਤਵਿਚਿ॥
(ਦੈਂਤ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਯੁੱਧ-ਭੂਮੀ ਵਿਚ ਮਰੇ ਪਏ ਸਨ (ਜਿਵੇਂ) ਤਿਖਾਣ ਨੇ (ਲਕੜੀ ਦੇ) ਮੋਛੇ ਵੱਢ ਦੇ (ਸੁਟੇ ਹਨ)।
The demons are lying dead in the battlefield like the pieces of wood sawed by the carpenter.
ਰਣਵਿਚਿਘੱਤੀਘਾਣੀਲੋਹੂਮਿਝਦੀ॥
ਰਣ-ਭੂਮੀ ਵਿਚ ਲਹੂ ਅਤੇ ਮਿਝ ਦੀ ਘਾਣੀ ਬਣੀ ਪਈ ਸੀ।
The press of blood and marrow has been set in motion in the battlefield.
ਚਾਰੇਜੁਗਕਹਾਣੀਚੱਲਗਤੇਗਦੀ॥
(ਦੇਵੀ ਦੀ) ਤਲਵਾਰ ਦੀ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਚੌਂਹਾਂ ਯੁਗਾਂ ਤਕ ਚਲੇਗੀ।
The story of the sword will be related in all the four ages.
ਬਿਧਣਖੇਤਵਿਹਾਣੀਮਹਿਖੇਦੈਤਨੂੰ॥੧੯॥
ਮਹਿਖਾਸੁਰ ਨੂੰ ਯੁੱਧ-ਭੂਮੀ ਵਿਚ ਦੁਖਦਾਇਕ ਸਮਾਂ (ਬਿੱਧਣ) ਕਟਣਾ ਪਿਆ ॥੧੯॥
On the demon Mahisha the period of agony occurred in the battlefield.19.
ਇਤੀਮਹਿਖਾਸੁਰਦੈਤਮਾਰੇਦੁਰਗਾਆਇਆ॥
ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਹਿਖਾਸੁਰ ਦੈਂਤ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਕੇ ਦੁਰਗਾ ਆ ਗਈ।
In this way the demon Mahishasura was killed on the arrival of Durga.
ਚਉਦਹਲੋਕਾਂਰਾਣੀਸਿੰਘੁਨਚਾਇਆ॥
ਚੌਦਾਂ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਰਾਣੀ (ਦੇਵੀ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਵਾਹਨ) ਸ਼ੇਰ ਨੂੰ ਨਚਾਇਆ। ਦੇਵੀ ਦੁਰਗਾ ਨੇ ਚਉਦਹ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਰਾਣੀ ਸਿੰਘ ਨਚਾਇਆ।
The queen caused the lion to dance in the fourteen worlds.
ਮਾਰੇਬੀਰਜਟਾਣੀਦਲਵਿਚਿਅਗਲੇ॥
(ਦੈਂਤਾਂ ਦੇ) ਦਲਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੇ ਜਟਾਧਾਰੀ ਵੀਰ (ਦੈਂਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਦਲ ਵਿਚ ਮਾਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ।
She killed a great number of brave demons with matted locks in the battlefield.
ਮੰਗਣਨਾਹੀਪਾਣੀਦਲੀਹੰਘਾਰਕੈ॥
(ਰਣ ਵਿਚ ਵੈਰੀ) ਦਲ ਨੂੰ ਲਲਕਾਰਦੇ ਹੋਏ (ਸੂਰਵੀਰ) ਪਾਣੀ ਤਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਮੰਗਦੇ ਸਨ।
Challenging the armies, these warriors do not even ask for water.
ਜਣੁਕਰੀਸਮਾਇਪਠਾਣੀਸੁਣਿਕੈਰਾਗਨੂੰ॥
(ਉਹ ਯੁੱਧ ਵਿਚ ਇਤਨੇ ਮਗਨ ਸਨ) ਮਾਨੋ ਪਠਾਣ ਰਾਗ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਮਸਤ (ਸਮਾਇ) ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੋਵੇ।
It seems that listening to the music, the Pathans have realized the state of ecstasy.
ਰੱਤੂਦੇਹੜਵਾਣੀਚਲੇਬੀਰਖੇਤ॥
ਰਣ-ਭੂਮੀ ਵਿਚ ਵੀਰ ਯੋਧਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਲਹੂ ਦਾ ਹੜ੍ਹ ਆ ਗਿਆ।
The flood of the blood of the fighters is flowing.
ਪੀਤਾਫੁੱਲੁਇਆਣੀਘੁੱਮਣਸੂਰਮੇ॥੨੦॥
ਇਆਣਾ (ਵਿਅਕਤੀ) ਫੁਲ ਪੀਣ ਤੇ (ਜਿਵੇਂ ਝੂਮਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਸੂਰਮੇ ਝੂਮ ਰਹੇ ਸਨ ॥੨੦॥
The brave warriors are roaming as if they have ignorantly consumed the intoxicating poppy.20.
ਹੋਈਅਲੋਪਭਵਾਨੀਦੇਵਾਂਨੂੰਰਾਜੁਦੇ॥
ਦੇਵਤਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਰਾਜ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਭਵਾਨੀ ਲੋਪ ਹੋ ਗਈ।
Bhavani (Durga) disappeard after bestowing kingdom on the gods.
ਈਸਰਦੀਬਰਦਾਨੀਹੋਈਜਿੱਤਦਿਨ॥
ਉਧਰ ਜਿਸ ਦਿਨ ਸ਼ਿਵ ਦੀ ਵਰਦਾਨੀ (ਘੜੀ) ਆ ਪਹੁੰਚੀ,
The day for which Shiva granted the boon.
ਸੁੰਭਨਿਸੁੰਭਗੁਮਾਨੀਜਨਮੇਸੂਰਮੇ॥
ਤਦੋਂ ਸ਼ੁੰਭ-ਨਿਸ਼ੁੰਭ (ਨਾਂ ਦੇ) ਅਭਿਮਾਨੀ ਸੂਰਮੇ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋ ਗਏ,
The proud warriors Sumbh and Nisumbh were born.
ਇੰਦ੍ਰਦੀਰਜਧਾਨੀਤੱਕੀਜਿੱਤਨੀ॥੨੧॥
(ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ) ਇੰਦਰ ਦੀ ਰਾਜਧਾਨੀ ਨੂੰ ਜਿਤਣ ਦੀ ਇੱਛਾ ਨਾਲ ਵੇਖਿਆ ॥੨੧॥
They planned to conquer the capital of Indra.21.
ਇੰਦ੍ਰਪੁਰੀਤੇਧਾਵਣਾਵਡਜੋਧੀਂਮਤਾਪਕਾਇਆ॥
ਵਡਿਆਂ (ਰਾਖਸ਼) ਯੋਧਿਆਂ ਨੇ ਇੰਦਰਪੁਰੀ ਉਤੇ ਹਮਲਾ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕੀਤਾ (ਯੋਜਨਾ ਬਣਾਈ)।
The great fighters decided to rush towards the kingdom of Indra.
ਸੰਜਪਟੇਲਾਂਪਾਖਰਾਂਭੇੜਸੰਦਾਸਾਜੁਬਣਾਇਆ॥
ਕਵਚ, ਪਟੇਲਾਂ (ਮੂੰਹ ਨੂੰ ਢਕਣ ਦੀ ਲੋਹੇ ਦੀ ਜਾਲੀ) ਅਤੇ ਪਾਖਰਾਂ (ਲੋਹੇ ਦੀ ਜਾਲੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਬਣੀਆਂ ਘੋੜਿਆਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਝੁਲਾਂ) (ਨੂੰ ਲੈ ਕੇ) ਲੜਾਈ ਦੀ ਤਿਆਰੀ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੀ।
They began to prepare the war-material consisting of armour with belts and saddle-gear.
ਜੰਮੇਕਟਕਅਛੂਹਣੀਅਸਮਾਨੁਗਰਦੀਛਾਇਆ॥
ਅਛੂਹਣੀ ਸੈਨਾ (ਇਕੱਠੀ ਹੋ ਕੇ) ਚਲ ਪਈ, (ਉਸ ਦੇ ਚਲਣ ਨਾਲ) ਘਟਾ ਨੇ ਆਕਾਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਢਕ ਲਿਆ।
An army of lakhs of warriors gathered and the dust rose to sky.
ਰੋਹਿਸੁੰਭਨਿਸੁੰਭਸਿਧਾਇਆ॥੨੨॥
ਰੋਹ ਨਾਲ ਭਰੇ ਹੋਏ ਸ਼ੁੰਭ ਅਤੇ ਨਿਸ਼ੁੰਭ (ਯੁੱਧ ਲਈ) ਤੁਰ ਪਏ ॥੨੨॥
Sumbh and Nisumbh, full of rage, have marched forward.22.

ਸੁੰਭਨਿਸੁੰਭਅਲਾਇਆਵਡਜੋਧੀਸੰਘਰਵਾਏ॥
ਸ਼ੁੰਭ ਅਤੇ ਨਿਸ਼ੁੰਭ ਨੇ ਆਦੇਸ਼ ਦਿੱਤਾ (ਤਾਂ) ਵੱਡੇ ਸੂਰਮਿਆਂ ਨੇ (ਯੁੱਧ ਦਾ) ਬਿਗਲ ਵਜਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ।
Sumbh and Nisumbh ordered the great warriors to sound the bugle of war.
