ਰਾਖਸ਼ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਨਾਲ ਭਰੇ ਹੋਏ ਅਤੇ ਤਲਵਾਰਾਂ ਤੇ ਕਵਚਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਸਜੇ ਹੋਏ (ਯੁੱਧ-ਭੂਮੀ ਵਿਚ) ਆ ਗਏ।
The demons came in great rage, decorated with swords and armour.
ਜੁੱਟੇਸਉਹੇਜੁੱਧਨੂੰਇਕਜਾਤਿਨਜਾਣਨਭੱਜੇ॥
ਇਕੋ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ('ਜਾਤਿ') ਦੇ (ਸੂਰਮੇ) ਆਹਮੋ-ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਯੁੱਧ ਵਿਚ ਜੁਟੇ ਹੋਏ ਸਨ, (ਜੋ) ਭਜਣਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਨ ਜਾਣਦੇ।
The warriors were facing the war-front and none of them knows to retrace his steps.
ਖੇਤਅੰਦਰਿਜੋਧੇਗੱਜੇ॥੭॥
ਮੈਦਾਨੇ ਜੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਯੋਧੇ ਗੱਜ ਰਹੇ ਸਨ ॥੭॥
The brave fighters were roaring in the battlefield.7.

ਜੰਗਮੁਸਾਫਾਬੱਜਿਆਰਣਘੁਰੇਨਗਾਰੇਚਾਵਲੇ॥
ਯੁੱਧ ਦਾ ਘੰਟਾ (ਜੰਗ) ਖੜਕਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਰਣ ਵਿਚ ਚਾਉ ਨੂੰ ਵਧਾਉਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਨਗਾਰੇ ਵੱਜਣ ਲਗ ਗਏ।
The war-trumpet sounded and the enthusiastic drums thundered in the battlefield.
ਝੂਲਣਨੇਜੇਬੈਰਕਾਨੀਸਾਣਲਸਨਿਲਸਾਵਲੇ॥
ਨੇਜ਼ਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਬੰਨ੍ਹੀਆਂ ਝੰਡੀਆਂ ਅਥਵਾ ਫੁੰਮਣ ਝੂਲਣ ਲਗੇ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਚਮਕੀਲੇ ਨਿਸ਼ਾਨ (ਝੰਡੇ) ਲਿਸ਼ਕਾਂ ਮਾਰਦੇ ਸਨ।
The lances swung and the lustrous tassels of the banners glistened.
ਢੋਲਨਗਾਰੇਪਉਣਦੇਊਂਘਨਜਾਣਜਟਾਵਲੇ॥
ਢੋਲ ਅਤੇ ਨਗਾਰੇ ਗੂੰਜਦੇ (ਪਉਣਦੇ) ਸਨ; (ਇੰਜ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਸੀ) ਮਾਨੋਂ ਬਬਰ ਸ਼ੇਰ ('ਜਟਾਵਲੇ') ਬੁਕ ਰਹੇ ਹੋਣ।
The drums and trumpets echoed and the worriors were dozing like the drunkard with matted hair.
ਦੁਰਗਾਦਾਨੋਡਹੇਰਣਨਾਦਵੱਜਨਖੇਤਿਭੀਹਾਵਲੇ॥
ਦੁਰਗਾ ਅਤੇ ਦੈਂਤ ਯੁੱਧ ਵਿਚ ਜੁਟ ਗਏ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਰਣ-ਭੂਮੀ ਵਿਚ ਭਿਆਨਕ ਧੌਂਸੇ (ਨਾਦ) ਵੱਜ ਰਹੇ ਸਨ।
Durga and demons waged war in the battlefield where dreadful music is being played.
ਬੀਰਪਰੋਤੇਬਰਛੀਏਂਜਣੁਡਾਲਚਮੁੱਟੇਆਵਲੇ॥
(ਯੁੱਧ ਵਿਚ) ਵੀਰ-ਯੋਧੇ ਬਰਛੀਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਇੰਜ ਪਰੁਚੇ ਹੋਏ ਸਨ ਮਾਨੋ ਡਾਲੀ ਨਾਲ ਆਂਵਲੇ ਚਮੁਟੇ ਹੋਏ ਹੋਣ।
The brave fighters were pierced by daggers like the phylianthus emblica sticking with the bough.
ਇਕਿਵੱਢੇਤੇਗੀਤੜਫੀਅਨਿਮਦਪੀਤੇਲੋਟਨਿਬਾਵਲੇ॥
ਇਕ ਤਲਵਾਰ ਨਾਲ ਵੱਢੇ ਹੋਏ (ਧਰਤੀ ਉਤੇ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਤੜਫ ਰਹੇ ਸਨ, ਮਾਨੋ ਸ਼ਰਾਬ ਪੀ ਕੇ ਮਤਵਾਲੇ ਵਾਂਗ ਲੋਟ-ਪੋਟ ਹੋ ਰਹੇ ਹੋਣ।
Some writhe being chopped by the sword like the rolling mad drunkards.
ਇਕਿਚੁਣਿਚੁਣਿਝਾੜਉਕਢੀਅਨਿਰੇਤਵਿਚੋਂਸੁਇਨਾਡਾਵਲੇ॥
ਇਕਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਝਾੜੀਆਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਚੁਣ-ਚੁਣ ਕੇ (ਇੰਜ) ਕਢਿਆ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ (ਜਿਵੇਂ) ਰੇਤ ਵਿਚ ਨਿਆਰੀਏ ਸੋਨਾ ਕਢਦੇ ਹਨ।
Some are picked up from the bushes like the process of panning out gold from the sand.
ਗਦਾਤ੍ਰਿਸੂਲਾਂਬਰਛੀਆਂਤੀਰਵੱਗਨਿਖਰੇਉਤਾਵਲੇ॥
ਗਦਾ, ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ੂਲ, ਤੀਰ, ਬਰਛੀਆਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਤੇਜ਼ੀ ਨਾਲ ਚਲ ਰਹੀਆਂ ਸਨ,
The maces, tridents, daggers and arrows are being struck with real hurry.
ਜਣੁਡਸੇਭੁਜੰਗਮਸਾਂਵਲੇਮਰਿਜਾਵਨਿਬੀਰਰੁਹਾਵਲੇ॥੮॥
ਮਾਨੋ ਕਾਲੇ ਨਾਗ ਡੰਗਦੇ ਹੋਣ, (ਜਿੰਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਲਗਣ ਨਾਲ) ਰੋਹ ਵਾਲੇ ਵੀਰ ਮਰਦੇ ਜਾ ਰਹੇ ਸਨ ॥੮॥
It appears that black snakes are stinging and the furious heroes are dying.8.

ਦੇਖਨਚੰਡਪ੍ਰਚੰਡਨੂੰਰਣਘੁਰੇਨਗਾਰੇ॥
ਪ੍ਰਚੰਡ ਚੰਡੀ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖਦਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਰਣ-ਭੂਮੀ ਵਿਚ (ਦੈਂਤਾਂ ਦੇ) ਨਗਾਰੇ ਗੂੰਜਣ ਲਗੇ।
Seeing the intense glory of Chandi, the trumpets souded in the battlefield.
ਧਾਏਰਾਕਸਰੋਹਲੇਚਉਗਿਰਦੇਭਾਰੇ॥
ਕ੍ਰੋਧਵਾਨ ਰਾਖਸ਼ਾਂ ਨੇ ਚੌਹਾਂ ਪਾਸਿਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਦੌੜ ਕੇ ਚੰਡੀ ਨੂੰ ਘੇਰ ਲਿਆ।
The highly furious demons ran on all four sides.
ਹੱਥੀਂਤੇਗਾਂਪਕੜਿਕੈਰਣਭਿੜੇਕਰਾਰੇ॥
(ਰਾਖਸ਼) ਹੱਥਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਤਲਾਵਾਰਾਂ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਰਣ ਵਿਚ ਕਰੜੇ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਲੜ ਰਹੇ ਸਨ।
Holding their swords in their hands they fought very bravely in the battlefield.
ਕਦੇਨਨੱਠੇਜੁੱਧਤੇਜੋਧੇਜੁਝਾਰੇ॥
(ਉਹ) ਜੁਝਾਰੂ ਯੋਧੇ ਕਦੇ ਵੀ ਯੁੱਧ ਤੋਂ ਭਜੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਨ।
These militant fighters never ran away from war-arena.
ਦਿਲਵਿਚਿਰੋਹਬਢਾਇਕੈਮਾਰਿਮਾਰਿਪੁਕਾਰੇ॥
ਦਿਲ ਵਿਚ (ਅਥਵਾ ਦਲ ਵਿਚ) ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਵਧਾ ਕੇ 'ਮਾਰੋ' 'ਮਾਰੋ' ਪੁਕਾਰਦੇ ਸਨ।
Highly infuriated they shouted "kill, kill" in their ranks.
ਮਾਰੇਚੰਡਪ੍ਰਚੰਡਨੈਬੀਰਖੇਤਉਤਾਰੇ॥
ਪ੍ਰਚੰਡ ਚੰਡੀ ਨੇ (ਰਾਖਸ਼) ਸੂਰਮਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਕੇ ਸਥਰ ਲਾਹ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਸਨ,
The intensely glorious Chandi killed the warriors and threw them in the field.
ਮਾਰੇਜਾਪਨਿਬਿਜੁਲੀਸਿਰਭਾਰਮੁਨਾਰੇ॥੯॥
ਮਾਨੋ ਬਿਜਲੀ ਦੇ ਮਾਰੇ ਹੋਏ ਮੁਨਾਰੇ ਸਿਰ ਭਾਰ (ਡਿਗੇ ਪਏ) ਹੋਣ ॥੯॥
It appeared that the lightning had eradicated the minarets and thrown them headlong.9.

ਚੋਟਪਈਦਮਾਮੇਦਲਾਂਮੁਕਾਬਲਾ॥
ਧੌਂਸੇ ਉਤੇ ਸਟ ਵਜਦੇ ਸਾਰ ਫ਼ੌਜਾਂ ਦਾ ਮੁਕਾਬਲਾ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ।
The drum was beaten and the armies attacked each other.
ਦੇਵੀਦਸਤਨਚਾਈਸੀਹਣਸਾਰਦੀ॥
(ਉਸ ਵੇਲੇ) ਦੇਵੀ ਨੇ ਹੱਥ ਵਿਚ ਲੋਹੇ ਦੀ ਸ਼ੇਰਨੀ (ਤਲਵਾਰ) ਨੂੰ ਨਚਾਇਆ
The goddess caused the dancing of the lioness of steel (sword);
ਪੇਟਮਲੰਦੇਲਾਈਮਹਿਖੇਦੈਤਨੂੰ॥
ਅਤੇ ਆਕੀ ਹੋਏ ('ਮਲੰਦੇ') ਮਹਿਖਾਸੁਰ ਦੇ ਪੇਟ ਵਿਚ ਮਾਰ ਦਿੱਤੀ
And gave a blow to the demon Mahisha who was rubbing his belly.
ਗੁਰਦੇਆਂਦਾਂਖਾਈਨਾਲੇਰੁਕੜੇ॥
(ਜੋ) ਗੁਰਦੇ, ਆਂਦਰਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਪਸਲੀਆਂ ('ਰੁਕੜੇ') ਨੂੰ ਖਾਂਦੀ (ਚੀਰਦੀ) ਹੋਈ (ਦੂਜੇ ਪਾਸੇ ਨਿਕਲ ਗਈ)।
(The sword) pierced the kindneys, intestines and the ribs.
ਜੇਹੀਦਿਲਵਿਚਆਈਕਹੀਸੁਣਾਇਕੈ॥
(ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ) ਜਿਹੋ ਜਿਹੀ ਗੱਲ (ਮੇਰੇ) ਦਿਲ ਵਿਚ ਫੁਰੀ (ਉਹੀ) ਸੁਣਾ ਕੇ ਕਹਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ,
Whatever hath come in my mind, I have related that.
ਚੋਟੀਜਾਣੁਦਿਖਾਈਤਾਰੇਧੂਮਕੇਤ॥੧੦॥
ਮਾਨੋ ਬੋਦੀ ਵਾਲੇ (ਧੂਮ ਕੇਤੂ) ਤਾਰੇ ਨੇ ਚੋਟੀ ਵਿਖਾਈ ਹੋਵੇ ॥੧੦॥
It appears that Dhumketu (the shooting star) had displayed its top-knot.10.

ਨਗਾਰੇ ਉਤੇ ਸੱਟਾਂ ਵਜਦਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਸੈਨਿਕ ਕਤਾਰਾਂ ('ਅਣੀਆਂ') ਆਪਸ ਵਿਚ ਉਲਝ ਗਈਆਂ।
The drums are being beaten and the armies are engaged in close fight with each other.
ਧੂਹਲਈਆਂਤਰਵਾਰੀਂਦੇਵਾਂਦਾਨਵੀਂ॥
ਦੇਵਤਿਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਦੈਂਤਾਂ ਨੇ ਤਲਵਾਰਾਂ ਖਿਚ ਲਈਆਂ ਸਨ
The gods and demons have drawn their swords.
ਵਾਹਨਵਾਰੋਵਾਰੀਸੂਰੇਸੰਘਰੇ॥
ਅਤੇ (ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਯੁੱਧ-ਭੂਮੀ ਵਿਚ ਸੂਰਵੀਰ ਵਾਰੋ ਵਾਰੀ ਚਲਾਉਂਦੇ ਸਨ।
And strike them again and again killing warriors.
ਵਗੈਰੱਤੁਝੁਲਾਰੀਜਿਉਗੇਰੂਬਾਬਤ੍ਰਾ॥
ਲਹੂ ਦੇ ਪਰਨਾਲੇ (ਇੰਜ) ਵਗਦੇ ਸਨ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਗੇਰੂ ਰੰਗਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਡਿਗਦਾ ਹੈ (ਬ+ਆਬ+ਉਤਰਾ)।
The blood flows like waterfall in the same manner as the red ochre colour is washed off from clothes.
ਦੇਖਨਿਬੈਠਿਅਟਾਰੀਨਾਰੀਰਾਕਸਾਂ॥
ਰਾਖਸ਼ਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਇਸਤਰੀਆਂ ਅਟਾਰੀਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਬੈਠ ਕੇ (ਯੁੱਧ ਦਾ ਰੰਗ-ਢੰਗ) ਦੇਖ ਰਹੀਆਂ ਸਨ।
The ladies of demons see the fight, while sitting in their lofts.
ਪਾਈਧੂਮਸਵਾਰੀਂਦੁਰਗਾਦਾਨਵੀ॥੧੧॥
ਦੁਰਗਾ ਅਤੇ ਦੈਂਤਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਸਵਾਰੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਵੀ ਧੁੰਮ ਮਚਾਈ ਹੋਈ ਸੀ ॥੧੧॥
The carriage of the goddess Durga hath raised a tumult amongst the demons.11.

ਲੱਖਨਗਾਰੇਵੱਜਨਿਆਮ੍ਹੋਸਾਮ੍ਹਣੇ॥
(ਯੁੱਧ-ਭੂਮੀ ਵਿਚ) ਲਖਾਂ ਧੌਂਸੇ ਆਹਮੋ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਵਜਦੇ ਸਨ।
A hundred thousand trumpets resound facing one another.
ਰਾਕਸਰਣੋਨਭੱਜਨਿਰੋਹੇਰੋਹਲੇ॥
ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਨਾਲ ਭਰੇ ਹੋਏ ਗੁਸੈਲ ਰਾਖਸ਼ ਰਣ-ਭੂਮੀ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਭਜਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਨ।
The highly infuriated demons do not flee from the battlefield.
ਸ਼ੀਹਾਂਵਾਂਗੂਗੱਜਨਿਸੱਭੇਸੂਰਮੇ॥
ਸਾਰੇ ਸੂਰਮੇ ਸ਼ੇਰਾਂ ਵਾਂਗ ਗਜ ਰਹੇ ਸਨ
All the warriors roar like lions.
ਤਣਿਤਣਿਕੈਬਰਛੱਡਣਿਦੁਰਗਾਸਾਮ੍ਹਣੇ॥੧੨॥
ਅਤੇ ਦੁਰਗਾ ਉਤੇ (ਪੂਰੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਤਣ-ਤਣ ਕੇ ਤੀਰ ਛਡ ਰਹੇ ਸਨ ॥੧੨॥
They stretch their bows and shoot the arrows in front it Durga.12.
ਪਉੜੀ॥
ਘੁਰੇਨਗਾਰੇਦੋਹਰੇਰਣਸੰਗਲੀਆਲੇ॥
ਸੰਗਲਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਬੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਦੋਹਰੇ ਧੌਂਸੇ ਯੁੱਧ-ਭੂਮੀ ਵਿਚ ਵਜ ਰਹੇ ਸਨ।
The dual chained trumpets sounded in the battlefield.
ਧੂੜਿਲਪੇਟੇਧੂਹਰੇਸਿਰਦਾਰਜਟਾਲੇ॥
ਜਟਾ-ਧਾਰੀ (ਰਾਖਸ਼) ਸੈਨਾ ਨਾਇਕ ਧੂੜ ਨਾਲ ਧੂਸਰਿਤ ਹੋਏ ਪਏ ਸਨ,
The demon chieftains having matted locks are enveloped in dust.
ਉਖਲੀਆਂਨਾਸਾਜਿਨਾਮੁਹਜਾਪਨਿਆਲੇ॥
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਨਾਸਾਂ ਉਖਲੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਆਲੇ ਜਾਪਦੇ ਸਨ।
Their nostrils are like mortars and the mouths seem like niches.
ਧਾਏਦੇਵੀਸਾਹਮਣੇਬੀਰਮੁੱਛਲੀਆਲੇ॥
(ਉਹ) ਮੁਛੈਲ ਸੂਰਵੀਰ ਦੇਵੀ ਦੇ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਭਜ ਕੇ ਆਏ ਸਨ।
The brave fighters bearing long moustaches ran in front of the goddess.
ਸੁਰਪਤਿਜੇਹੇਲੜਿਹਟੇਬੀਰਟਲੇਨਟਾਲੇ॥
(ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨਾਲ) ਇੰਦਰ (ਸੁਰਪਤਿ) ਵਰਗੇ ਲੜ ਹਟੇ ਸਨ, ਪਰ (ਉਹ) ਵੀਰ (ਯੁੱਧ ਭੂਮੀ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਤੋਂ) ਹਟਾਇਆਂ ਹਟਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਨ।
The warriors like the king of gods (Indra) had become tired of fighting, but the brave fighters could not be averted from their stand.
ਗੱਜੇਦੁਰਗਾਘੇਰਿਕੈਜਣੁਘਣੀਅਰਕਾਲੇ॥੧੩॥
(ਉਹ) ਦੁਰਗਾ ਨੂੰ ਘੇਰ ਕੇ (ਇੰਜ) ਗੱਜ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ ਮਾਨੋ ਕਾਲੇ ਬਦਲ (ਗਰਜ ਰਹੇ) ਹੋਣ ॥੧੩॥
They roared. On besieging Durga, like dark clouds.13.
ਪਉੜੀ॥
ਚੋਟਪਈਖਰਚਾਮੀਦਲਾਂਮੁਕਾਬਲਾ॥
ਖੋਤੇ ਦੇ ਚੰਮ ਨਾਲ ਮੜ੍ਹੇ ਹੋਏ ਧੌਂਸੇ ਉਤੇ ਚੋਟ ਪਈ (ਅਰਥਾਂਤਰ-ਚੰਮ ਦੇ ਬਣੇ ਹੋਏ ਡੰਡੇ ਨਾਲ ਧੌਂਸੇ ਉਤੇ ਸਟ ਪਈ) ਤਾਂ ਦਲਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮੁਕਾਬਲਾ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ।
The drum, wrapped in donkey's hide, was beaten and the armies attacked each other.
ਘੇਰਲਈਵਰਿਆਮੀਦੁਰਗਾਆਇਕੈ॥
ਸੂਰਵੀਰਾਂ ਨੇ ਆ ਕੇ ਦੁਰਗਾ ਨੂੰ ਘੇਰ ਲਿਆ।
The brave demon-warriors besieged Durga.
ਰਾਕਸਵਡੇਅਲਾਮੀਭੱਜਨਜਾਣਦੇ॥
ਰਾਖਸ਼ ਬਹੁਤ ਬਲਸ਼ਾਲੀ ਸਨ (ਜੋ ਯੁੱਧ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਭਜਣਾ ਜਾਣਦੇ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਨ।
They are greatly knowledgeable in warfare and do not know running back.
ਅੰਤਹੋਏਸੁਰਗਾਮੀਮਾਰੇਦੇਵਤਾ॥੧੪॥
ਦੇਵੀ ਦੇ ਮਾਰੇ ਹੋਏ ਰਾਖਸ਼ ਅੰਤ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਅਰਗ ਨੂੰ ਚਲੇ ਗਏ ॥੧੪॥
They ultimately went to heaven on being killed by the goddess.14.

ਅਗਣਤਘੁਰੇਨਗਾਰੇਦਲਾਂਭਿੜੰਦਿਆਂ॥
ਸੈਨਿਕ ਦਲਾਂ ਦੇ ਲੜਦਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਅਣਗਿਣਤ ਨਗਾਰੇ ਗੂੰਜਣ ਲਗ ਗਏ।
With the flaring up of fight between the armies, innumerable trumpets sounded.
ਪਾਏਮਹਿਖਲਭਾਰੇਦੇਵਾਂਦਾਨਵਾਂ॥
ਦੇਵਤਿਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਦੈਂਤਾਂ ਨੇ ਝੋਟਿਆਂ (ਵਾਂਗ) ਭਾਰੀ ਊਧਮ ਮਚਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ।
The gods and demons both have raised great tumult like male buffalos.
ਵਾਹਨਿਫੱਟਕਰਾਰੇਰਾਕਸਰੋਹਲੇ॥
ਗੁੱਸੇ ਨਾਲ ਭਰੇ ਹੋਏ ਰਾਖਸ਼ ਕਰਾਰੇ ਫੱਟ ਲਗਾ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ।
