First Mahalaa:
मः १ ॥
ਸਉਮਣੁਹਸਤੀਘਿਉਗੁੜੁਖਾਵੈਪੰਜਿਸੈਦਾਣਾਖਾਇ॥
ਹਾਥੀ ਕਿਤਨਾ ਹੀ ਘਿਉ ਗੁੜ ਤੇ ਕਈ ਮਣਾਂ ਦਾਣਾ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ;
The elephant eats a hundred pounds of ghee and molasses, and five hundred pounds of corn.
सउ मणु हसती घिउ गुड़ु खावै पंजि सै दाणा खाइ ॥
ਡਕੈਫੂਕੈਖੇਹਉਡਾਵੈਸਾਹਿਗਇਐਪਛੁਤਾਇ॥
(ਰੱਜ ਕੇ) ਡਕਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸ਼ੂਕਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮਿੱਟੀ (ਸੁੰਡ ਨਾਲ) ਉਡਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਜਦੋਂ ਸਾਹ ਨਿਕਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਡਕਾਰਨਾ ਸ਼ੂਕਣਾ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
He belches and grunts and scatters dust, and when the breath leaves his body, he regrets it.
डकै फूकै खेह उडावै साहि गइऐ पछुताइ ॥
ਅੰਧੀਫੂਕਿਮੁਈਦੇਵਾਨੀ॥
(ਧਨ-ਪਦਾਰਥ ਦੇ ਮਾਣ ਵਿਚ) ਅੰਨ੍ਹੀ ਤੇ ਕਮਲੀ (ਹੋਈ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਭੀ ਹਾਥੀ ਵਾਂਗ) ਫੂਕਰਾਂ ਮਾਰ ਕੇ ਮਰਦੀ ਹੈ: (ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਸਹੇੜਦੀ ਹੈ)।
The blind and arrogant die insane.
अंधी फूकि मुई देवानी ॥
ਖਸਮਿਮਿਟੀਫਿਰਿਭਾਨੀ॥
ਜੇ (ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਗਵਾ ਕੇ) ਖਸਮ ਵਿਚ ਸਮਾਏ ਤਾਂ ਹੀ ਖਸਮ ਨੂੰ ਭਾਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
Submitting to the Lord, one becomes pleasing to Him.
खसमि मिटी फिरि भानी ॥
ਅਧੁਗੁਲ੍ਹਾਚਿੜੀਕਾਚੁਗਣੁਗੈਣਿਚੜੀਬਿਲਲਾਇ॥
ਚਿੜੀ ਦੀ ਚੋਗ ਹੈ ਅੱਧਾ ਦਾਣਾ (ਭਾਵ, ਬਹੁਤ ਥੋੜ੍ਹੀ ਜਿਹੀ), (ਇਹ ਥੋੜ੍ਹੀ ਜਿਹੀ ਚੋਗ ਚੁਗ ਕੇ) ਉਹ ਆਕਾਸ਼ ਵਿਚ ਉੱਡਦੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਬੋਲਦੀ ਹੈ;
The sparrow eats only half a grain, then it flies through the sky and chirps.
अधु गुल्हा चिड़ी का चुगणु गैणि चड़ी बिललाइ ॥
ਖਸਮੈਭਾਵੈਓਹਾਚੰਗੀਜਿਕਰੇਖੁਦਾਇਖੁਦਾਇ॥
ਜੇ ਜੋ ਉਹ ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਭਾਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਚਿੜੀ ਹੀ ਚੰਗੀ ਹੈ (ਡਕਾਰਨ ਤੇ ਫੂਕਰਾਂ ਮਾਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਹਾਥੀ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਇਹ ਨਿੱਕੀ ਜਿਹੀ ਚਿੜੀ ਚੰਗੀ ਹੈ)।
The good sparrow is pleasing to her Lord and Master, if she chirps the Name of the Lord.
खसमै भावै ओहा चंगी जि करे खुदाइ खुदाइ ॥
ਸਕਤਾਸੀਹੁਮਾਰੇਸੈਮਿਰਿਆਸਭਪਿਛੈਪੈਖਾਇ॥
ਇਕ ਬਲੀ ਸ਼ੇਰ ਸੈਂਕੜੇ ਮਿਰਗਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਸ਼ੇਰ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਕਈ ਹੋਰ ਜੰਗਲੀ ਪਸ਼ੂ ਭੀ ਪੇਟ ਭਰਦੇ ਹਨ;
The powerful tiger kills hundreds of deer, and all sorts of other animals eat what it leaves.
सकता सीहु मारे सै मिरिआ सभ पिछै पै खाइ ॥
ਹੋਇਸਤਾਣਾਘੁਰੈਨਮਾਵੈਸਾਹਿਗਇਐਪਛੁਤਾਇ॥
ਤਾਕਤ ਦੇ ਮਾਣ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ ਸ਼ੇਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਘੁਰਨੇ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਾਂਦਾ, ਪਰ ਜਦੋਂ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਸਾਹ ਨਿਕਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਬੁੱਕਣਾ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
It becomes very strong, and cannot be contained in its den, but when it must go, it regrets.
होइ सताणा घुरै न मावै साहि गइऐ पछुताइ ॥
ਅੰਧਾਕਿਸਨੋਬੁਕਿਸੁਣਾਵੈ॥
ਉਹ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਕਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਬੁੱਕ ਬੁੱਕ ਕੇ ਸੁਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ?
So who is impressed by the roar of the blind beast?
अंधा किस नो बुकि सुणावै ॥
ਖਸਮੈਮੂਲਿਨਭਾਵੈ॥
ਖਸਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਬੁੱਕਣਾ ਚੰਗਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗਦਾ।
He is not pleasing at all to his Lord and Master.
खसमै मूलि न भावै ॥
ਅਕਸਿਉਪ੍ਰੀਤਿਕਰੇਅਕਤਿਡਾਅਕਡਾਲੀਬਹਿਖਾਇ॥
(ਇਸ ਸ਼ੇਰ ਦੇ ਟਾਕਰੇ ਤੇ, ਵੇਖੋ,) ਅੱਕ-ਤਿੱਡਾ ਅੱਕ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅੱਕ ਦੀ ਡਾਲੀ ਉਤੇ ਬੈਠ ਕੇ ਅੱਕ ਹੀ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ;
The insect loves the milkweed plant; perched on its branch, it eats it.
अक सिउ प्रीति करे अक तिडा अक डाली बहि खाइ ॥
ਖਸਮੈਭਾਵੈਓਹੋਚੰਗਾਜਿਕਰੇਖੁਦਾਇਖੁਦਾਇ॥
ਪਰ ਜੇ ਉਹ ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਭਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ (ਬੁੱਕ ਬੁੱਕ ਕੇ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਡਰਾਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਸ਼ੇਰ ਨਾਲੋਂ) ਉਹ ਅੱਕ-ਤਿੱਡਾ ਹੀ ਚੰਗਾ ਹੈ।
It becomes good and pleasing to its Lord and Master, if it chirps the Name of the Lord.
खसमै भावै ओहो चंगा जि करे खुदाइ खुदाइ ॥
ਨਾਨਕਦੁਨੀਆਚਾਰਿਦਿਹਾੜੇਸੁਖਿਕੀਤੈਦੁਖੁਹੋਈ॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਦੁਨੀਆ (ਵਿਚ ਜੀਉਣ) ਚਾਰ ਦਿਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਥੇ ਮੌਜ ਮਾਣਿਆਂ ਦੁੱਖ ਹੀ ਨਿਕਲਦਾ ਹੈ,
O Nanak, the world lasts for only a few days; indulging in pleasures, pain is produced.
नानक दुनीआ चारि दिहाड़े सुखि कीतै दुखु होई ॥
ਗਲਾਵਾਲੇਹੈਨਿਘਣੇਰੇਛਡਿਨਸਕੈਕੋਈ॥
(ਇਹ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੀ ਮਿਠਾਸ ਐਸੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਜ਼ਬਾਨੀ ਗਿਆਨ ਦੀਆਂ) ਗੱਲਾਂ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਤਾਂ ਬੜੇ ਹਨ ਪਰ (ਇਸ ਮਿਠਾਸ ਨੂੰ) ਕੋਈ ਛੱਡ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ।
There are many who boast and brag, but none of them can remain detached from the world.
गला वाले हैनि घणेरे छडि न सकै कोई ॥
ਮਖਂੀਮਿਠੈਮਰਣਾ॥
ਮੱਖੀਆਂ ਇਸ ਮਿਠਾਸ ਉਤੇ ਮਰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ।
The fly dies for the sake of sweets.
मखीं मिठै मरणा ॥
ਜਿਨਤੂਰਖਹਿਤਿਨਨੇੜਿਨਆਵੈਤਿਨਭਉਸਾਗਰੁਤਰਣਾ॥੨॥
ਪਰ, ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਤੂੰ ਬਚਾਏਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਇਹ ਮਿਠਾਸ ਨੇੜੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਢੁਕਦੀ, ਉਹ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ (ਸਾਫ਼) ਤਰ ਕੇ ਲੰਘ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੨॥
O Lord, death does not even approach those whom You protect. You carry them across the terrifying world-ocean. ||2||
जिन तू रखहि तिन नेड़ि न आवै तिन भउ सागरु तरणा ॥२॥
