ਤਾਕਉਰਾਖਤਦੇਕਰਿਹਾਥ॥
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਹੱਥ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ।
He preserves them, and holds out His Hands to protect them.
ਮਾਨਸਜਤਨਕਰਤਬਹੁਭਾਤਿ॥
ਮਨੁੱਖ ਕਈ ਕਿਸਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਜਤਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
You may make all sorts of efforts,
ਤਿਸਕੇਕਰਤਬਬਿਰਥੇਜਾਤਿ॥
(ਪਰ ਜੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸਹਾਇਤਾ ਨਾਹ ਕਰੇ ਤਾਂ) ਉਸ ਦੇ ਕੰਮ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
but these attempts are in vain.
ਮਾਰੈਨਰਾਖੈਅਵਰੁਨਕੋਇ॥
(ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਨਾਹ ਕੋਈ ਮਾਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ, ਨਾਹ ਰੱਖ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜੇਡਾ) ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ;
No one else can kill or preserve
ਸਰਬਜੀਆਕਾਰਾਖਾਸੋਇ॥
ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਰਾਖਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੈ।
He is the Protector of all beings.
ਕਾਹੇਸੋਚਕਰਹਿਰੇਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ॥
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ! ਤੂੰ ਕਿਉਂ ਫ਼ਿਕਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ?
So why are you so anxious, O mortal?
ਜਪਿਨਾਨਕਪ੍ਰਭਅਲਖਵਿਡਾਣੀ॥੫॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਅਲੱਖ ਤੇ ਅਚਰਜ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰ ॥੫॥
Meditate, O Nanak, on God, the invisible, the wonderful! ||5||
ਬਾਰੰਬਾਰਬਾਰਪ੍ਰਭੁਜਪੀਐ॥
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਘੜੀ ਮੁੜੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰੀਏ,
Time after time, again and again, meditate on God.
ਪੀਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁਇਹੁਮਨੁਤਨੁਧ੍ਰਪੀਐ॥
ਤੇ (ਨਾਮ-) ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਪੀ ਕੇ ਇਸ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਤੇ ਸਰੀਰਕ ਇੰਦ੍ਰਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਰਜਾ ਦੇਵੀਏ।
Drinking in this Nectar, this mind and body are satisfied.
ਨਾਮੁਰਤਨੁਜਿਨਿਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਪਾਇਆ॥
ਜਿਸ ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਨੇ ਨਾਮ-ਰੂਪੀ ਰਤਨ ਲੱਭ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ,
The jewel of the Naam is obtained by the Gurmukhs;
ਤਿਸੁਕਿਛੁਅਵਰੁਨਾਹੀਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਾਇਆ॥
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਿਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਕੁਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ;
they see no other than God.
ਨਾਮੁਧਨੁਨਾਮੋਰੂਪੁਰੰਗੁ॥
ਨਾਮ (ਉਸ ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਦਾ) ਧਨ ਹੈ,
Unto them, the Naam is wealth, the Naam is beauty and delight.
ਨਾਮੋਸੁਖੁਹਰਿਨਾਮਕਾਸੰਗੁ॥
ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਸੰਗ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
The Naam is peace, the Lord's Name is their companion.
ਨਾਮਰਸਿਜੋਜਨਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਨੇ॥
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਸੁਆਦ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਜ ਗਏ ਹਨ,
Those who are satisfied by the essence of the Naam
ਮਨਤਨਨਾਮਹਿਨਾਮਿਸਮਾਨੇ॥
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਤਨ ਕੇਵਲ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਜੁੜੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
their minds and bodies are drenched with the Naam.
ਊਠਤਬੈਠਤਸੋਵਤਨਾਮ॥
ਉਠਦਿਆਂ ਬੈਠਦਿਆਂ, ਸੁੱਤਿਆਂ (ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨਾ,
While standing up, sitting down and sleeping, the Naam,
ਕਹੁਨਾਨਕਜਨਕੈਸਦਕਾਮ॥੬॥
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਹੋ ਹੀ ਸੇਵਕਾਂ ਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਆਹਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
says Nanak, is forever the occupation of God's humble servant. ||6||
ਬੋਲਹੁਜਸੁਜਿਹਬਾਦਿਨੁਰਾਤਿ॥
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਆਪਣੀ ਜੀਭ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੋ,
Chant His Praises with your tongue, day and night.
ਪ੍ਰਭਿਅਪਨੈਜਨਕੀਨੀਦਾਤਿ॥
ਸਿਫ਼ਿਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਇਹ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੇਵਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਹੀ) ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ;
God Himself has given this gift to His servants.
ਕਰਹਿਭਗਤਿਆਤਮਕੈਚਾਇ॥
(ਸੇਵਕ) ਅੰਦਰਲੇ ਉਤਸ਼ਾਹ ਨਾਲ ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ,
Performing devotional worship with heart-felt love,
ਪ੍ਰਭਅਪਨੇਸਿਉਰਹਹਿਸਮਾਇ॥
ਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
they remain absorbed in God Himself.
ਜੋਹੋਆਹੋਵਤਸੋਜਾਨੈ॥
(ਸੇਵਕ) ਆਪਣੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਪਛਾਣ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
They know the past and the present.
ਪ੍ਰਭਅਪਨੇਕਾਹੁਕਮੁਪਛਾਨੈ॥
ਤੇ, ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ (ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ) ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ;
They recognize God's Own Command.
ਤਿਸਕੀਮਹਿਮਾਕਉਨਬਖਾਨਉ॥
ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਦੀ ਕੇਹੜੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਮੈਂ ਦੱਸਾਂ?
Who can describe His Glory?
ਤਿਸਕਾਗੁਨੁਕਹਿਏਕਨਜਾਨਉ॥
ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਸੇਵਕ ਦਾ ਇਕ ਗੁਣ ਬਿਆਨ ਕਰਨਾ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦਾ।
I cannot describe even one of His virtuous qualities.
ਆਠਪਹਰਪ੍ਰਭਬਸਹਿਹਜੂਰੇ॥
ਜੋ ਅੱਠੇ ਪਹਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ,
Those who dwell in God's Presence, twenty-four hours a day
ਕਹੁਨਾਨਕਸੇਈਜਨਪੂਰੇ॥੭॥
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ- ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪੂਰੇ ਭਾਂਡੇ ਹਨ ॥੭॥
- says Nanak, they are the perfect persons. ||7||
ਮਨਮੇਰੇਤਿਨਕੀਓਟਲੇਹਿ॥
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! (ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ਼ ਸਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ) ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਰਣੀ ਪਉ,
O my mind, seek their protection;
ਮਨੁਤਨੁਅਪਨਾਤਿਨਜਨਦੇਹਿ॥
ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਤਨ ਮਨ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਕੇ ਕਰ ਦੇਹ।
give your mind and body to those humble beings.
ਜਿਨਿਜਨਿਅਪਨਾਪ੍ਰਭੂਪਛਾਤਾ॥
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਅਪਣੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ,
Those humble beings who recognizes God
ਸੋਜਨੁਸਰਬਥੋਕਕਾਦਾਤਾ॥
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਾਰੇ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਦੇਣ ਦੇ ਸਮਰੱਥ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
are the givers of all things.
ਤਿਸਕੀਸਰਨਿਸਰਬਸੁਖਪਾਵਹਿ॥
(ਹੇ ਮਨ!) ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸਰਣੀ ਪਿਆਂ ਤੂੰ ਸਾਰੇ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਵਹਿਂਗਾ,
In His Sanctuary, all comforts are obtained.
ਤਿਸਕੈਦਰਸਿਸਭਪਾਪਮਿਟਾਵਹਿ॥
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਦੀਦਾਰ ਨਾਲ ਤੂੰ ਸਾਰੇ ਪਾਪ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲਵਹਿਂਗਾ।
By the Blessing of His Darshan, all sins are erased.
ਅਵਰਸਿਆਨਪਸਗਲੀਛਾਡੁ॥
ਹੋਰ ਚੁਤਰਾਈ ਛੱਡ ਦੇਹ,
So renounce all other clever devices,
ਤਿਸੁਜਨਕੀਤੂਸੇਵਾਲਾਗੁ॥
ਤੇ ਉਸ ਸੇਵਕ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੱਟ ਪਉ।
and enjoin yourself to the service of those servants.
ਆਵਨੁਜਾਨੁਨਹੋਵੀਤੇਰਾ॥
(ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ) ਤੇਰਾ ਆਉਣ ਜਾਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ।
Your comings and goings shall be ended.
ਨਾਨਕਤਿਸੁਜਨਕੇਪੂਜਹੁਸਦਪੈਰਾ॥੮॥੧੭॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਸ ਸੰਤ ਜਨ ਦੇ ਸਦਾ ਪੈਰ ਪੂਜ ॥੮॥੧੭॥
O Nanak, worship the feet of God's humble servants forever. ||8||17||
ਸਲੋਕੁ॥
Shalok:
ਸਤਿਪੁਰਖੁਜਿਨਿਜਾਨਿਆਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਤਿਸਕਾਨਾਉ॥
ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਤੇ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਜਾਣ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਹੈ,
The one who knows the True Lord God, is called the True Guru.
ਤਿਸਕੈਸੰਗਿਸਿਖੁਉਧਰੈਨਾਨਕਹਰਿਗੁਨਗਾਉ॥੧॥
ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ (ਰਹਿ ਕੇ) ਸਿੱਖ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਬਚ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ; (ਤਾਂ ਤੇ) ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਤੂੰ ਭੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ) ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾ ॥੧॥
In His Company, the Sikh is saved, O Nanak, singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||1||
ਅਸਟਪਦੀ॥
Ashtapadee:
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਸਿਖਕੀਕਰੈਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲ॥
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਸਿੱਖ ਦੀ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
The True Guru cherishes His Sikh.
ਸੇਵਕਕਉਗੁਰੁਸਦਾਦਇਆਲੁ॥
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਉਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
The Guru is always merciful to His servant.
ਸਿਖਕੀਗੁਰੁਦੁਰਮਤਿਮਲੁਹਿਰੈ॥
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਦੀ ਭੈੜੀ ਮਤਿ-ਰੂਪੀ ਮੈਲ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
The Guru washes away the filth of the evil intellect of His Sikh.
ਗੁਰਬਚਨੀਹਰਿਨਾਮੁਉਚਰੈ॥
ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਸਿੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
Through the Guru's Teachings, he chants the Lord's Name.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਸਿਖਕੇਬੰਧਨਕਾਟੈ॥
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਦੇ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ) ਬੰਧਨ ਕੱਟ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
The True Guru cuts away the bonds of His Sikh.
ਗੁਰਕਾਸਿਖੁਬਿਕਾਰਤੇਹਾਟੈ॥
(ਅਤੇ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸਿੱਖ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ ਹਟ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ;
The Sikh of the Guru abstains from evil deeds.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਸਿਖਕਉਨਾਮੁਧਨੁਦੇਇ॥
(ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਰੂਪੀ ਧਨ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
The True Guru gives His Sikh the wealth of the Naam.
ਗੁਰਕਾਸਿਖੁਵਡਭਾਗੀਹੇ॥
(ਤੇ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸਿੱਖ ਵੱਡੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
The Sikh of the Guru is very fortunate.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਸਿਖਕਾਹਲਤੁਪਲਤੁਸਵਾਰੈ॥
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਦਾ ਲੋਕ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਸਵਾਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
The True Guru arranges this world and the next for His Sikh.
ਨਾਨਕਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਸਿਖਕਉਜੀਅਨਾਲਿਸਮਾਰੈ॥੧॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਜਿੰਦ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਯਾਦ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
O Nanak, with the fullness of His heart, the True Guru mends His Sikh. ||1||
ਗੁਰਕੈਗ੍ਰਿਹਿਸੇਵਕੁਜੋਰਹੈ॥
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਸੇਵਕ (ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ (ਭਾਵ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ) ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
That selfless servant, who lives in the Guru's household,
ਗੁਰਕੀਆਗਿਆਮਨਮਹਿਸਹੈ॥
ਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਮੰਨਦਾ ਹੈ;
is to obey the Guru's Commands with all his mind.
ਆਪਸਕਉਕਰਿਕਛੁਨਜਨਾਵੈ॥
ਜੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਡਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਤਾਉਂਦਾ,
He is not to call attention to himself in any way.
ਹਰਿਹਰਿਨਾਮੁਰਿਦੈਸਦਧਿਆਵੈ॥
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਦਾ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਧਿਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ;
He is to meditate constantly within his heart on the Name of the Lord.
ਮਨੁਬੇਚੈਸਤਿਗੁਰਕੈਪਾਸਿ॥
ਜੋ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਅੱਗੇ ਵੇਚ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਹਵਾਲੇ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ)
One who sells his mind to the True Guru
ਤਿਸੁਸੇਵਕਕੇਕਾਰਜਰਾਸਿ॥
ਉਸ ਸੇਵਕ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਕੰਮ ਸਿਰੇ ਚੜ੍ਹ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
- that humble servant's affairs are resolved.
ਸੇਵਾਕਰਤਹੋਇਨਿਹਕਾਮੀ॥
ਜੋ ਸੇਵਕ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ) ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਕਿਸੇ ਫਲ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਹਸ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਰੱਖਦਾ,
One who performs selfless service, without thought of reward,
ਤਿਸਕਉਹੋਤਪਰਾਪਤਿਸੁਆਮੀ॥
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਲਿਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
shall attain his Lord and Master.
