ਨਾਨਾਰੂਪਜਿਉਸ੍ਵਾਗੀਦਿਖਾਵੈ॥
ਬਹੁ-ਰੂਪੀਏ ਵਾਂਗ ਕਈ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਰੂਪ ਵਿਖਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ,
In various costumes, like actors, they appear.
ਜਿਉਪ੍ਰਭਭਾਵੈਤਿਵੈਨਚਾਵੈ॥
ਜਿਉਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਭਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਿਵੇਂ (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਨਚਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
As it pleases God, they dance.
ਜੋਤਿਸੁਭਾਵੈਸੋਈਹੋਇ॥
ਉਹੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਉਸ (ਮਾਲਕ) ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ।
Whatever pleases Him, comes to pass.
ਨਾਨਕਦੂਜਾਅਵਰੁਨਕੋਇ॥੭॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਉਸ ਵਰਗਾ) ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਦੂਜਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ॥੭॥
O Nanak, there is no other at all. ||7||
ਕਬਹੂਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿਇਹੁਪਾਵੈ॥
(ਜਦੋਂ) ਕਦੇ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਅੰਸ਼) ਇਹ ਜੀਵ ਸਤਸੰਗਿ ਵਿਚ ਅੱਪੜਦਾ ਹੈ,
Sometimes, this being attains the Company of the Holy.
ਉਸੁਅਸਥਾਨਤੇਬਹੁਰਿਨਆਵੈ॥
ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਥਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਮੁੜ ਵਾਪਸ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ;
From that place, he does not have to come back again.
ਅੰਤਰਿਹੋਇਗਿਆਨਪਰਗਾਸੁ॥
(ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਇਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗਿਆਨ ਦਾ ਪਰਕਾਸ਼ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
The light of spiritual wisdom dawns within.
ਉਸੁਅਸਥਾਨਕਾਨਹੀਬਿਨਾਸੁ॥
(ਤੇ) ਉਸ (ਗਿਆਨ ਦੇ ਪਰਕਾਸ਼ ਵਾਲੀ) ਹਾਲਤ ਦਾ ਨਾਸ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ;
That place does not perish.
ਮਨਤਨਨਾਮਿਰਤੇਇਕਰੰਗਿ॥
(ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ) ਤਨ ਮਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਤੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਤੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ,
The mind and body are imbued with the Love of the Naam, the Name of the One Lord.
ਸਦਾਬਸਹਿਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮਕੈਸੰਗਿ॥
ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ।
He dwells forever with the Supreme Lord God.
ਜਿਉਜਲਮਹਿਜਲੁਆਇਖਟਾਨਾ॥
(ਸੋ) ਜਿਵੇਂ ਪਾਣੀ ਵਿਚ ਪਾਣੀ ਆ ਰਲਦਾ ਹੈ,
As water comes to blend with water,
ਤਿਉਜੋਤੀਸੰਗਿਜੋਤਿਸਮਾਨਾ॥
ਤਿਵੇਂ (ਸਤਸੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕੇ ਹੋਏ ਦੀ) ਆਤਮਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ;
his light blends into the Light.
ਮਿਟਿਗਏਗਵਨਪਾਏਬਿਸ੍ਰਾਮ॥
ਉਸ ਦੇ (ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ) ਫੇਰੇ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਟਿਕਾਣਾ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
Reincarnation is ended, and eternal peace is found.
ਨਾਨਕਪ੍ਰਭਕੈਸਦਕੁਰਬਾਨ॥੮॥੧੧॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਕੇ ਜਾਈਏ ॥੮॥੧੧॥
Nanak is forever a sacrifice to God. ||8||11||

ਸੁਖੀਬਸੈਮਸਕੀਨੀਆਆਪੁਨਿਵਾਰਿਤਲੇ॥
ਗਰੀਬੀ ਸੁਭਾਉ ਵਾਲਾ ਬੰਦਾ ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ, ਤੇ ਨੀਵਾਂ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਸੁਖੀ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ,
The humble beings abide in peace; subduing egotism, they are meek.
ਬਡੇਬਡੇਅਹੰਕਾਰੀਆਨਾਨਕਗਰਬਿਗਲੇ॥੧॥
(ਪਰ) ਵੱਡੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ, ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਗਲ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧॥
The very proud and arrogant persons, O Nanak, are consumed by their own pride. ||1||
ਅਸਟਪਦੀ॥
Ashtapadee:
ਜਿਸਕੈਅੰਤਰਿਰਾਜਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ॥
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਰਾਜ ਦਾ ਮਾਣ ਹੈ,
One who has the pride of power within,
ਸੋਨਰਕਪਾਤੀਹੋਵਤਸੁਆਨੁ॥
ਉਹ ਕੁੱਤਾ ਨਰਕ ਵਿਚ ਪੈਣ ਦਾ ਸਜ਼ਾਵਾਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
shall dwell in hell, and become a dog.
ਜੋਜਾਨੈਮੈਜੋਬਨਵੰਤੁ॥
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਬੜਾ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ,
One who deems himself to have the beauty of youth,
ਸੋਹੋਵਤਬਿਸਟਾਕਾਜੰਤੁ॥
ਉਹ ਵਿਸ਼ਟਾ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਕੀੜਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਸਦਾ ਵਿਸ਼ੇ-ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਗੰਦ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ)।
shall become a maggot in manure.
ਆਪਸਕਉਕਰਮਵੰਤੁਕਹਾਵੈ॥
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗੇ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਅਖਵਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
One who claims to act virtuously,
ਜਨਮਿਮਰੈਬਹੁਜੋਨਿਭ੍ਰਮਾਵੈ॥
ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਜੰਮਦਾ ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕਈ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਭਟਕਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
shall live and die, wandering through countless reincarnations.
ਧਨਭੂਮਿਕਾਜੋਕਰੈਗੁਮਾਨੁ॥
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਧਨ ਤੇ ਧਰਤੀ (ਦੀ ਮਾਲਕੀ) ਦਾ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
One who takes pride in wealth and lands
ਸੋਮੂਰਖੁਅੰਧਾਅਗਿਆਨੁ॥
ਉਹ ਮੂਰਖ ਹੈ, ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਹੈ, ਬੜਾ ਜਾਹਿਲ ਹੈ।
is a fool, blind and ignorant.
ਕਰਿਕਿਰਪਾਜਿਸਕੈਹਿਰਦੈਗਰੀਬੀਬਸਾਵੈ॥
ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਦਿਲ ਵਿਚ ਗਰੀਬੀ (ਸੁਭਾਉ) ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
One whose heart is mercifully blessed with abiding humility,
ਨਾਨਕਈਹਾਮੁਕਤੁਆਗੈਸੁਖੁਪਾਵੈ॥੧॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਇਸ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
O Nanak, is liberated here, and obtains peace hereafter. ||1||
ਧਨਵੰਤਾਹੋਇਕਰਿਗਰਬਾਵੈ॥
ਮਨੁੱਖ ਧਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਮਾਣ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
One who becomes wealthy and takes pride in it
ਤ੍ਰਿਣਸਮਾਨਿਕਛੁਸੰਗਿਨਜਾਵੈ॥
(ਪਰ ਉਸ ਦੇ) ਨਾਲ (ਅੰਤ ਵੇਲੇ) ਇਕ ਤੀਲੇ ਜਿਤਨੀ ਭੀ ਕੋਈ ਚੀਜ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦੀ।
not even a piece of straw shall go along with him.
ਬਹੁਲਸਕਰਮਾਨੁਖਊਪਰਿਕਰੇਆਸ॥
ਬਹੁਤੇ ਲਸ਼ਕਰ ਅਤੇ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਬੰਦਾ ਆਸਾਂ ਲਾਈ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ,
He may place his hopes on a large army of men,
ਪਲਭੀਤਰਿਤਾਕਾਹੋਇਬਿਨਾਸੁ॥
(ਪਰ) ਪਲਕ ਵਿਚ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਸਹਾਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ)।
but he shall vanish in an instant.
ਸਭਤੇਆਪਜਾਨੈਬਲਵੰਤੁ॥
ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਸਭ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਬਲੀ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ,
One who deems himself to be the strongest of all,
ਖਿਨਮਹਿਹੋਇਜਾਇਭਸਮੰਤੁ॥
(ਪਰ ਅੰਤ ਵੇਲੇ) ਇਕ ਖਿਣ ਵਿਚ (ਸੜ ਕੇ) ਸੁਆਹ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
in an instant, shall be reduced to ashes.
ਕਿਸੈਨਬਦੈਆਪਿਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ॥
(ਜੋ ਬੰਦਾ) ਆਪ (ਇਤਨਾ) ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੀ ਭੀ ਪਰਵਾਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ,
One who thinks of no one else except his own prideful self
ਧਰਮਰਾਇਤਿਸੁਕਰੇਖੁਆਰੀ॥
ਧਰਮਰਾਜ (ਅੰਤ ਵੇਲੇ) ਉਸ ਦੀ ਮਿੱਟੀ ਪਲੀਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
the Righteous Judge of Dharma shall expose his disgrace.
ਗੁਰਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿਜਾਕਾਮਿਟੈਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ॥
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦਇਆ ਨਾਲ ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਮਿਟਦਾ ਹੈ,
One who, by Guru's Grace, eliminates his ego,
ਸੋਜਨੁਨਾਨਕਦਰਗਹਪਰਵਾਨੁ॥੨॥
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ, ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਕਬੂਲ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
O Nanak, becomes acceptable in the Court of the Lord. ||2||
ਕੋਟਿਕਰਮਕਰੈਹਉਧਾਰੇ॥
(ਜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਕਰੋੜਾਂ (ਧਾਰਮਿਕ) ਕੰਮ ਕਰੇ (ਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ) ਅਹੰਕਾਰ (ਭੀ) ਕਰੇ,
If someone does millions of good deeds, while acting in ego,
ਸ੍ਰਮੁਪਾਵੈਸਗਲੇਬਿਰਥਾਰੇ॥
ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਕੰਮ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹਨ, (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਕੰਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਫਲ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕੇਵਲ) ਥਕੇਵਾਂ (ਹੀ) ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
he shall incur only trouble; all this is in vain.
ਅਨਿਕਤਪਸਿਆਕਰੇਅਹੰਕਾਰ॥
ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਤਪ ਦੇ ਸਾਧਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਜੇ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਾਣ ਕਰੇ,
If someone performs great penance, while acting in selfishness and conceit,
ਨਰਕਸੁਰਗਫਿਰਿਫਿਰਿਅਵਤਾਰ॥
(ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਭੀ) ਨਰਕਾਂ ਸੁਰਗਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਜੰਮਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਕਦੇ ਸੁਖ ਤੇ ਕਦੇ ਦੁਖ ਭੋਗਦਾ ਹੈ)।
he shall be reincarnated into heaven and hell, over and over again.
ਅਨਿਕਜਤਨਕਰਿਆਤਮਨਹੀਦ੍ਰਵੈ॥
ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਜਤਨ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਜੇ ਹਿਰਦਾ ਨਰਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਤਾਂ ਦੱਸੋ,
He makes all sorts of efforts, but his soul is still not softened
ਹਰਿਦਰਗਹਕਹੁਕੈਸੇਗਵੈ॥
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ?
how can he go to the Court of the Lord?
ਆਪਸਕਉਜੋਭਲਾਕਹਾਵੈ॥
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਨੇਕ ਅਖਵਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
One who calls himself good
ਤਿਸਹਿਭਲਾਈਨਿਕਟਿਨਆਵੈ॥
ਨੇਕੀ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਢੁੱਕਦੀ।
goodness shall not draw near him.
ਸਰਬਕੀਰੇਨਜਾਕਾਮਨੁਹੋਇ॥
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਧੂੜ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
One whose mind is the dust of all
ਕਹੁਨਾਨਕਤਾਕੀਨਿਰਮਲਸੋਇ॥੩॥
ਆਖ, ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਸੋਭਾ ਖਿਲਰਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
- says Nanak, his reputation is spotlessly pure. ||3||
ਜਬਲਗੁਜਾਨੈਮੁਝਤੇਕਛੁਹੋਇ॥
ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜਦ ਤਕ ਇਹ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਮੈਥੋਂ ਕੁਝ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ,
As long as someone thinks that he is the one who acts,
ਤਬਇਸਕਉਸੁਖੁਨਾਹੀਕੋਇ॥
ਤਦ ਤਾਈਂ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਸੁਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ।
he shall have no peace.
ਜਬਇਹਜਾਨੈਮੈਕਿਛੁਕਰਤਾ॥
ਜਦ ਤਕ ਇਹ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ (ਆਪਣੇ ਬਲ ਨਾਲ) ਕੁਝ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ,
As long as this mortal thinks that he is the one who does things,
ਤਬਲਗੁਗਰਭਜੋਨਿਮਹਿਫਿਰਤਾ॥
ਤਦ ਤਕ (ਵੱਖਰਾ-ਪਨ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਣ) ਜੂਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
he shall wander in reincarnation through the womb.
ਜਬਧਾਰੈਕੋਊਬੈਰੀਮੀਤੁ॥
ਜਦ ਤਕ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਵੈਰੀ ਤੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ,
As long as he considers one an enemy, and another a friend,
ਤਬਲਗੁਨਿਹਚਲੁਨਾਹੀਚੀਤੁ॥
ਤਦ ਤਕ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਟਿਕਾਣੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ।
his mind shall not come to rest.
ਜਬਲਗੁਮੋਹਮਗਨਸੰਗਿਮਾਇ॥
ਜਦ ਤਕ ਬੰਦਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਗ਼ਰਕ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
As long as he is intoxicated with attachment to Maya,
ਤਬਲਗੁਧਰਮਰਾਇਦੇਇਸਜਾਇ॥
ਤਦ ਤਕ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਧਰਮ-ਰਾਜ ਡੰਡ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
the Righteous Judge shall punish him.
ਪ੍ਰਭਕਿਰਪਾਤੇਬੰਧਨਤੂਟੈ॥
(ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ) ਬੰਧਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਟੁੱਟਦੇ ਹਨ,
By God's Grace, his bonds are shattered;
ਗੁਰਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿਨਾਨਕਹਉਛੂਟੈ॥੪॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮੁੱਕਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
by Guru's Grace, O Nanak, his ego is eliminated. ||4||
ਸਹਸਖਟੇਲਖਕਉਉਠਿਧਾਵੈ॥
(ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਹਜ਼ਾਰਾਂ (ਰੁਪਏ) ਕਮਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਲੱਖਾਂ (ਰੁਪਇਆਂ) ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਉੱਠ ਦੌੜਦਾ ਹੈ;
Earning a thousand, he runs after a hundred thousand.
