ਸਚੈਸਬਦਿਨੀਸਾਣਿਠਾਕਨਪਾਈਐ॥
ਸੱਚੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ-ਰੂਪ ਰਾਹਦਾਰੀ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਣ ਦੇ ਰਾਹ ਵਿਚ) ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਰੋਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦੀ।
No one blocks the way of those who are blessed with the Banner of the True Word of the Shabad.
ਸਚੁਸੁਣਿਬੁਝਿਵਖਾਣਿਮਹਲਿਬੁਲਾਈਐ॥੧੮॥
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਸਮਝ ਕੇ ਤੇ ਸਿਮਰ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਮਹਲ ਵਿਚ ਸੱਦਾ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੮॥
Hearing, understanding and speaking Truth, one is called to the Mansion of the Lord's Presence. ||18||
ਸਲੋਕੁਮਃ੧॥
Shalok, First Mahalaa:
ਪਹਿਰਾਅਗਨਿਹਿਵੈਘਰੁਬਾਧਾਭੋਜਨੁਸਾਰੁਕਰਾਈ॥
ਜੇ ਮੈਂ ਅੱਗ (ਭੀ) ਪਹਿਨ ਲਵਾਂ, (ਜਾਂ) ਬਰਫ਼ ਵਿਚ ਘਰ ਬਣਾ ਲਵਾਂ (ਭਾਵ, ਜੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਇਤਨੀ ਤਾਕਤ ਆ ਜਾਏ ਕਿ ਅੱਗ ਵਿਚ ਤੇ ਬਰਫ਼ ਵਿਚ ਬੈਠ ਸਕਾਂ) ਲੋਹੇ ਨੂੰ ਭੋਜਨ ਬਣਾ ਲਵਾਂ (ਲੋਹਾ ਖਾ ਸਕਾਂ),
If I dressed myself in fire, and built my house of snow, and made iron my food;
ਸਗਲੇਦੂਖਪਾਣੀਕਰਿਪੀਵਾਧਰਤੀਹਾਕਚਲਾਈ॥
ਜੇ ਮੈਂ ਸਾਰੇ ਹੀ ਦੁੱਖ ਬੜੇ ਸੌਖ ਨਾਲ ਸਹਾਰ ਸਕਾਂ, ਸਾਰੀ ਧਰਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਤੋਰ ਸਕਾਂ,
and if I were to drink in all pain like water, and drive the entire Earth before me;
ਧਰਿਤਾਰਾਜੀਅੰਬਰੁਤੋਲੀਪਿਛੈਟੰਕੁਚੜਾਈ॥
ਜੇ ਮੈਂ ਸਾਰੇ ਅਸਮਾਨ ਨੂੰ ਤੱਕੜੀ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਖ ਕੇ ਤੇ ਪਿਛਲੇ ਛਾਬੇ ਵਿਚ ਚਾਰ ਮਾਸੇ ਦਾ ਵੱਟਾ ਪਾ ਕੇ ਤੋਲ ਸਕਾਂ,
and if I were to place the Earth upon a scale and balance it with a single copper coin;
ਏਵਡੁਵਧਾਮਾਵਾਨਾਹੀਸਭਸੈਨਥਿਚਲਾਈ॥
ਜੇ ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਇਤਨਾ ਵਧਾ ਸਕਾਂ ਕਿ ਕਿਤੇ ਸਮਾ ਹੀ ਨ ਸਕਾਂ, ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਨੱਥ ਕੇ ਤੋਰਾਂ, (ਭਾਵ, ਆਪਣੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਚਲਾਵਾਂ)
and if I were to become so great that I could not be contained, and if I were to control and lead all;
ਏਤਾਤਾਣੁਹੋਵੈਮਨਅੰਦਰਿਕਰੀਭਿਆਖਿਕਰਾਈ॥
ਜੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਇਤਨਾ ਬਲ ਹੋ ਜਾਏ, ਕਿ ਜੋ ਚਾਹੇ ਕਰਾਂ ਤੇ ਆਖ ਕੇ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਕਰਾਵਾਂ (ਤਾਂ ਭੀ ਇਹ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਤੁੱਛ ਹੈ)।
and if I were to possess so much power within my mind that I could cause others to do my bidding-so what?
ਜੇਵਡੁਸਾਹਿਬੁਤੇਵਡਦਾਤੀਦੇਦੇਕਰੇਰਜਾਈ॥
ਖਸਮ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜੇਡਾ ਵੱਡਾ ਆਪ ਹੈ ਉਤਨੀਆਂ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਦੀਆਂ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ਾਂ ਹਨ, ਜੇ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਸਾਈਂ ਹੋਰ ਭੀ ਬੇਅੰਤ (ਤਾਕਤਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ) ਦਾਤਾਂ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਦੇ ਦੇਵੇ, (ਤਾਂ ਭੀ ਇਹ ਤੁੱਛ ਹਨ)।
As Great as our Lord and Master is, so great are His gifts. He bestows them according to His Will.
ਨਾਨਕਨਦਰਿਕਰੇਜਿਸੁਉਪਰਿਸਚਿਨਾਮਿਵਡਿਆਈ॥੧॥
(ਅਸਲ ਗੱਲ) ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਇਹ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਜਿਸ ਬੰਦੇ ਉਤੇ ਮਿਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ (ਆਪਣੇ) ਸੱਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਇਹਨਾਂ ਮਾਨਸਕ ਤਾਕਤਾਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਵਧ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਹੈ) ॥੧॥
O Nanak, those upon whom the Lord casts His Glance of Grace, obtain the glorious greatness of the True Name. ||1||

Second Mahalaa:
ਆਖਣੁਆਖਿਨਰਜਿਆਸੁਨਣਿਨਰਜੇਕੰਨ॥
ਮੂੰਹ ਬੋਲ ਬੋਲ ਕੇ ਰੱਜਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ (ਭਾਵ, ਗੱਲਾਂ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਚਸਕਾ ਮੁੱਕਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ), ਕੰਨ (ਗੱਲਾਂ) ਸੁਣਨ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਰੱਜਦੇ,
The mouth is not satisfied by speaking, and the ears are not satisfied by hearing.
ਅਖੀਦੇਖਿਨਰਜੀਆਗੁਣਗਾਹਕਇਕਵੰਨ॥
ਅੱਖਾਂ (ਰੂਪ ਰੰਗ) ਵੇਖ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਰੱਜਦੀਆਂ, (ਇਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਇੰਦਰੇ) ਇਕ ਇਕ ਕਿਸਮ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ (ਰਸਾਂ) ਦੇ ਗਾਹਕ ਹਨ (ਆਪੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਰਸਾਂ ਦੀ ਗਾਹਕੀ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਜਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ, ਰਸਾਂ ਦੇ ਅਧੀਨ ਹੋਏ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਇੰਦ੍ਰਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਚਸਕਾ ਹਟਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ)।
The eyes are not satisfied by seeing-each organ seeks out one sensory quality.
ਭੁਖਿਆਭੁਖਨਉਤਰੈਗਲੀਭੁਖਨਜਾਇ॥
ਭੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅਧੀਨ ਹੋਇਆਂ ਦੀ ਸਮਝਾਇਆਂ ਭੀ ਭੁੱਖ ਮਿਟ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦੀ।
The hunger of the hungry is not appeased; by mere words, hunger is not relieved.
ਨਾਨਕਭੁਖਾਤਾਰਜੈਜਾਗੁਣਕਹਿਗੁਣੀਸਮਾਇ॥੨॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦਾ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਉਚਾਰ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਏ ॥੨॥
O Nanak, hunger is relieved only when one utters the Glorious Praises of the Praiseworthy Lord. ||2||
ਪਉੜੀ॥
Pauree:
ਵਿਣੁਸਚੇਸਭੁਕੂੜੁਕੂੜੁਕਮਾਈਐ॥
ਜੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਸਾਰ ਦੇਈਏ, ਤਾਂ ਬਾਕੀ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਕੂੜ ਹੀ ਕਮਾਈਦਾ ਹੈ।
Without the True One, all are false, and all practice falsehood.
ਵਿਣੁਸਚੇਕੂੜਿਆਰੁਬੰਨਿਚਲਾਈਐ॥
(ਇਸ ਕੂੜ ਵਿਚ ਮਨ ਇਤਨਾ ਗੱਡਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝੇ ਹੋਏ ਕੂੜ ਦੇ ਵਪਾਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਬੰਧਨ ਜਕੜ ਕੇ ਭਟਕਾਉਂਦੇ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
Without the True One, the false ones are bound and gagged and driven off.
ਵਿਣੁਸਚੇਤਨੁਛਾਰੁਛਾਰੁਰਲਾਈਐ॥
(ਇਸ ਦਾ) ਇਹ ਨਕਾਰਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਮਿੱਟੀ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਰੁਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਐਵੇਂ ਅਜ਼ਾਈਂ ਚਲਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ)।
Without the True One, the body is just ashes, and it mingles again with ashes.
ਵਿਣੁਸਚੇਸਭਭੁਖਜਿਪੈਝੈਖਾਈਐ॥
ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਪਹਿਨਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਸਗੋਂ ਹੋਰ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਵਧਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
Without the True One, all food and clothes are unsatisfying.
ਵਿਣੁਸਚੇਦਰਬਾਰੁਕੂੜਿਨਪਾਈਐ॥
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਸਾਰ ਕੇ ਝੂਠ ਵਿਚ ਲੱਗਿਆਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਦਰਬਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ।
Without the True One, the false ones do not attain the Lord's Court.
ਕੂੜੈਲਾਲਚਿਲਗਿਮਹਲੁਖੁਆਈਐ॥
ਕੂੜੇ ਲਾਲਚ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਦਰ ਗਵਾ ਲਈਦਾ ਹੈ,
Attached to false attachments, the Mansion of the Lord's Presence is lost.
ਸਭੁਜਗੁਠਗਿਓਠਗਿਆਈਐਜਾਈਐ॥
(ਤੇ ਇਸ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਇਹ ਜਗਤ) ਕੂੜ-ਰੂਪ ਠੱਗ ਦਾ ਠੱਗਿਆ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
The whole world is deceived by deception, coming and going in reincarnation.
ਤਨਮਹਿਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾਅਗਿਸਬਦਿਬੁਝਾਈਐ॥੧੯॥
(ਮਨੁੱਖਾ) ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਇਹ (ਜੋ) ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦੀ ਅੱਗ ਹੈ, ਇਹ ਕੇਵਲ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ ਬੁੱਝ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੧੯॥
Within the body is the fire of desire; through the Word of the Shabad, it is quenched. ||19||
ਸਲੋਕਮਃ੧॥
Shalok, First Mahalaa:
ਨਾਨਕਗੁਰੁਸੰਤੋਖੁਰੁਖੁਧਰਮੁਫੁਲੁਫਲਗਿਆਨੁ॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਪੂਰਨ) ਸੰਤੋਖ (-ਸਰੂਪ) ਗੁਰੂ (ਮਾਨੋ, ਇਕ) ਰੁੱਖ ਹੈ (ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ) ਧਰਮ (-ਰੂਪ) ਫੁੱਲ (ਲੱਗਦਾ) ਹੈ ਤੇ ਗਿਆਨ (-ਰੂਪ) ਫਲ (ਲੱਗਦੇ) ਹਨ, ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਜਲ ਨਾਲ ਰਸਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ (ਇਹ ਰੁੱਖ) ਸਦਾ ਹਰਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
O Nanak, the Guru is the tree of contentment, with flowers of faith, and fruits of spiritual wisdom.
ਰਸਿਰਸਿਆਹਰਿਆਸਦਾਪਕੈਕਰਮਿਧਿਆਨਿ॥
(ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ) ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ ਨਾਲ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਧਿਆਨ ਜੋੜਿਆਂ ਇਹ (ਗਿਆਨ-ਫਲ) ਪੱਕਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਰਤ ਜੋੜਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪੂਰਨ ਗਿਆਨ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ)।
Watered with the Lord's Love, it remains forever green; through the karma of good deeds and meditation, it ripens.
ਪਤਿਕੇਸਾਦਖਾਦਾਲਹੈਦਾਨਾਕੈਸਿਰਿਦਾਨੁ॥੧॥
(ਇਸ ਗਿਆਨ-ਫਲ ਨੂੰ) ਖਾਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਮੇਲ ਦੇ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਲਈ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਇਹ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਡੀ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
Honor is obtained by eating this tasty dish; of all gifts, this is the greatest gift. ||1||

First Mahalaa:
ਸੁਇਨੇਕਾਬਿਰਖੁਪਤਪਰਵਾਲਾਫੁਲਜਵੇਹਰਲਾਲ॥
(ਗੁਰੂ, ਮਾਨੋ,) ਸੋਨੇ ਦਾ ਰੁੱਖ ਹੈ; ਮੋਂਗਾ (ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਬਚਨ) ਉਸ ਦੇ ਪੱਤਰ ਹਨ, ਲਾਲ ਜਵਾਹਰ (ਗੁਰੂ-ਵਾਕ) ਉਸ ਦੇ ਫੁੱਲ ਹਨ।
The Guru is the tree of gold, with leaves of coral, and blossoms of jewels and rubies.
ਤਿਤੁਫਲਰਤਨਲਗਹਿਮੁਖਿਭਾਖਿਤਹਿਰਦੈਰਿਦੈਨਿਹਾਲੁ॥
ਉਸ (ਗੁਰੂ) ਰੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਮੂੰਹੋਂ ਉਚਾਰੇ ਹੋਏ (ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਬਚਨ-ਰੂਪ) ਫਲ ਲੱਗਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਗੁਰੂ) ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ ਖਿੜਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
The Words from His Mouth are fruits of jewels. Within His Heart, He beholds the Lord.
ਨਾਨਕਕਰਮੁਹੋਵੈਮੁਖਿਮਸਤਕਿਲਿਖਿਆਹੋਵੈਲੇਖੁ॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉੱਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਹੋਵੇ, ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਮੱਥੇ ਤੇ ਭਾਗ ਹੋਵੇ,
O Nanak, He is obtained by those, upon whose faces and foreheads such pre-recorded destiny is written.
ਅਠਿਸਠਿਤੀਰਥਗੁਰਕੀਚਰਣੀਪੂਜੈਸਦਾਵਿਸੇਖੁ॥
ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਚਰਨੀਂ ਲੱਗ ਕੇ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਅਠਾਹਠ ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਵਿਸ਼ੇਸ਼ ਜਾਣ ਕੇ (ਗੁਰੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਪੂਜਦਾ ਹੈ।
The sixty-eight sacred shrines of pilgrimage are contained in the constant worship of the feet of the Exalted Guru.
ਹੰਸੁਹੇਤੁਲੋਭੁਕੋਪੁਚਾਰੇਨਦੀਆਅਗਿ॥
ਨਿਰਦਇਤਾ, ਮੋਹ, ਲੋਭ ਤੇ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ-ਇਹ ਚਾਰੇ ਅੱਗ ਦੀਆਂ ਨਦੀਆਂ (ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਚੱਲ ਰਹੀਆਂ) ਹਨ,
Cruelty, material attachment, greed and anger are the four rivers of fire.
ਪਵਹਿਦਝਹਿਨਾਨਕਾਤਰੀਐਕਰਮੀਲਗਿ॥੨॥
ਜੋ ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਨਦੀਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਵੜਦੇ ਹਨ ਸੜ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਨਾਲ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨੀਂ) ਲੱਗ ਕੇ (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਨਦੀਆਂ ਤੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘੀਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
Falling into them, one is burned, O Nanak! One is saved only by holding tight to good deeds. ||2||
ਪਉੜੀ॥
Pauree:
ਜੀਵਦਿਆਮਰੁਮਾਰਿਨਪਛੋਤਾਈਐ॥
(ਹੇ ਬੰਦੇ!) (ਇਸ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਨੂੰ) ਮਾਰ ਕੇ ਜੀਊਂਦਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਮਰ (ਤਾਕਿ ਅੰਤ ਨੂੰ) ਪਛੁਤਾਣਾ ਨਾ ਪਏ।
While you are alive, conquer death, and you shall have no regrets in the end.
ਝੂਠਾਇਹੁਸੰਸਾਰੁਕਿਨਿਸਮਝਾਈਐ॥
ਕਿਸੇ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝ ਆਈ ਹੈ, ਕਿ ਇਹ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਝੂਠਾ ਹੈ।
This world is false, but only a few understand this.
ਸਚਿਨਧਰੇਪਿਆਰੁਧੰਧੈਧਾਈਐ॥
(ਆਮ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਜੀਵ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਅਧੀਨ ਹੋ ਕੇ) ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਧੰਧੇ ਵਿਚ ਭਟਕਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਸੱਚ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਂਦਾ।
People do not enshrine love for the Truth; they chase after worldly affairs instead.
ਕਾਲੁਬੁਰਾਖੈਕਾਲੁਸਿਰਿਦੁਨੀਆਈਐ॥
(ਇਹ ਗੱਲ ਚੇਤੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਕਿ) ਭੈੜਾ ਕਾਲ, ਨਾਸ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਕਾਲ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਤੇ (ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਖੜਾ) ਹੈ।
The terrible time of death and annihilation hovers over the heads of the world.
ਹੁਕਮੀਸਿਰਿਜੰਦਾਰੁਮਾਰੇਦਾਈਐ॥
ਇਹ ਜਮ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ (ਹਰੇਕ ਦੇ) ਸਿਰ ਤੇ (ਮੌਜੂਦ) ਹੈ ਤੇ ਦਾਉ ਲਾ ਕੇ ਮਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
By the Hukam of the Lord's Command, the Messenger of Death smashes his club over their heads.
ਆਪੇਦੇਇਪਿਆਰੁਮੰਨਿਵਸਾਈਐ॥
(ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਕੀਹ ਵੱਸ?) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਆਪਣਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈ (ਤੇ ਜੀਵ ਦੇ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ (ਆਪਣਾ ਆਪ) ਵਸਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
The Lord Himself gives His Love, and enshrines it within their minds.
ਮੁਹਤੁਨਚਸਾਵਿਲੰਮੁਭਰੀਐਪਾਈਐ॥
ਜਦੋਂ ਸੁਆਸ ਪੂਰੇ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਲਕ-ਮਾਤ੍ਰ (ਇਥੇ) ਢਿੱਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਾਈ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ।
Not a moment or an instant's delay is permitted, when one's measure of life is full.
ਗੁਰਪਰਸਾਦੀਬੁਝਿਸਚਿਸਮਾਈਐ॥੨੦॥
(ਇਹ ਗੱਲ) ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਨਾਲ (ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਬੰਦਾ) ਸਮਝ ਕੇ ਸੱਚ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨੦॥
By Guru's Grace, one comes to know the True One, and is absorbed into Him. ||20||
ਸਲੋਕੁਮਃ੧॥
Shalok, First Mahalaa:
ਤੁਮੀਤੁਮਾਵਿਸੁਅਕੁਧਤੂਰਾਨਿਮੁਫਲੁ॥
ਤੁੰਮੀ ਤੁੰਮਾ, ਜ਼ਹਿਰ, ਅੱਕ ਧਤੂਰਾ ਤੇ ਨਿੰਮ ਰੂਪ ਫਲ (ਆਦਿ ਕੁੜੱਤਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਦਾਰਥ)
Bitter melon, swallow-wort, thorn-apple and nim fruit
ਮਨਿਮੁਖਿਵਸਹਿਤਿਸੁਜਿਸੁਤੂੰਚਿਤਿਨਆਵਹੀ॥
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!) ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਤੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ, ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਵਿਚ ਤੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਵੱਸਦਾ। (ਭਾਵ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਭੀ ਕੁੜੱਤਣ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਮੂੰਹੋਂ ਭੀ ਕੌੜੇ ਬਚਨ ਬੋਲਦਾ ਹੈ)।
these bitter poisons lodge in the minds and mouths of those who do not remember You
ਨਾਨਕਕਹੀਐਕਿਸੁਹੰਢਨਿਕਰਮਾਬਾਹਰੇ॥੧॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਐਸੇ ਬਦਨਸੀਬ ਬੰਦੇ ਭਟਕਦੇ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ) ਕਿਸ ਦੇ ਅੱਗੇ (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਵਿਥਿਆ) ਦੱਸੀਏ? (ਭਾਵ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਰੋਗ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ) ॥੧॥
O Nanak, how shall I tell them this? Without the karma of good deeds, they are only destroying themselves. ||1||

ਮਤਿਪੰਖੇਰੂਕਿਰਤੁਸਾਥਿਕਬਉਤਮਕਬਨੀਚ॥
(ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ) ਮਤਿ (ਮਾਨੋ, ਇਕ) ਪੰਛੀ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਪਿਛਲੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਕੰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਬਣਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੁਭਾਉ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ (ਸਾਥੀ) ਹੈ, (ਇਸ ਸੁਭਾਉ ਦੇ ਸੰਗ ਕਰ ਕੇ 'ਮਤਿ') ਕਦੇ ਚੰਗੀ ਹੈ ਕਦੇ ਨੀਵੀਂ;
The intellect is a bird; on account of its actions, it is sometimes high, and sometimes low.
