ਪਰਬਤੁਸੁਇਨਾਰੁਪਾਹੋਵੈਹੀਰੇਲਾਲਜੜਾਉ॥
ਜੇ ਹੀਰੇ ਤੇ ਲਾਲਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਜੜਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੋਨੇ ਤੇ ਚਾਂਦੀ ਦਾ ਪਹਾੜ ਬਣ ਜਾਏ,
if the mountains became gold and silver, studded with gems and jewels
ਭੀਤੂੰਹੈਸਾਲਾਹਣਾਆਖਣਲਹੈਨਚਾਉ॥੧॥
ਤਾਂ ਭੀ (ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਂ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਨਾਹ ਫਸਾਂ ਤੇ) ਤੇਰੀ ਹੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਾਂ, ਤੇਰੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਚਾਉ ਮੁੱਕ ਨਾਹ ਜਾਏ ॥੧॥
-even then, I would worship and adore You, and my longing to chant Your Praises would not decrease. ||1||

ਭਾਰਅਠਾਰਹਮੇਵਾਹੋਵੈਗਰੁੜਾਹੋਇਸੁਆਉ॥
ਜੇ ਸਾਰੀ ਬਨਸਪਤੀ ਮੇਵਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਏ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਸੁਆਦ ਬਹੁਤ ਰਸੀਲਾ ਹੋਵੇ,
If all the eighteen loads of vegetation became fruits,
ਚੰਦੁਸੂਰਜੁਦੁਇਫਿਰਦੇਰਖੀਅਹਿਨਿਹਚਲੁਹੋਵੈਥਾਉ॥
ਜੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਰਹਿਣ ਦੀ ਥਾਂ ਅਟੱਲ ਹੋ ਜਾਏ ਤੇ ਚੰਦ ਅਤੇ ਸੂਰਜ ਦੋਵੇਂ (ਮੇਰੀ ਰਿਹੈਸ਼ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ) ਸੇਵਾ ਤੇ ਲਾਏ ਜਾਣ,
and the growing grass became sweet rice; if I were able to stop the sun and the moon in their orbits and hold them perfectly steady
ਭੀਤੂੰਹੈਸਾਲਾਹਣਾਆਖਣਲਹੈਨਚਾਉ॥੨॥
(ਤਾਂ ਭੀ ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਂ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਨਾਹ ਫਸਾਂ ਤੇ) ਤੇਰੀ ਹੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਾਂ, ਤੇਰੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਚਾਉ ਮੁੱਕ ਨਾਹ ਜਾਏ ॥੨॥

ਜੇਦੇਹੈਦੁਖੁਲਾਈਐਪਾਪਗਰਹਦੁਇਰਾਹੁ॥
ਜੇ (ਮੇਰੇ) ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਦੁੱਖ ਲੱਗ ਜਾਏ, ਦੋਵੇਂ ਮਨਹੂਸ ਤਾਰੇ ਰਾਹੂ ਤੇ ਕੇਤੂ (ਮੇਰੇ ਲਾਗੂ ਹੋ ਜਾਣ),
If my body were afflicted with pain, under the evil influence of unlucky stars;
ਰਤੁਪੀਣੇਰਾਜੇਸਿਰੈਉਪਰਿਰਖੀਅਹਿਏਵੈਜਾਪੈਭਾਉ॥
ਜ਼ਾਲਮ ਰਾਜੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਿਰ ਤੇ ਹੋਣ, ਜੇ ਤੇਰਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ (ਭਾਵ, ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਕਲ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਮੇਰੇ ਉੱਤੇ) ਪਰਗਟ ਹੋਵੇ,
and if the blood-sucking kings were to hold power over me
ਭੀਤੂੰਹੈਸਾਲਾਹਣਾਆਖਣਲਹੈਨਚਾਉ॥੩॥
ਤਾਂ ਭੀ (ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਂ ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਘਾਬਰ ਕੇ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਵਿਸਾਰ ਨਾ ਦਿਆਂ) ਤੇਰੀ ਹੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਾਂ, ਤੇਰੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਚਾਉ ਨਾਹ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਏ ॥੩॥
-even if this were my condition, I would still worship and adore You, and my longing to chant Your Praises would not decrease. ||3||

ਅਗੀਪਾਲਾਕਪੜੁਹੋਵੈਖਾਣਾਹੋਵੈਵਾਉ॥
(ਜੇ ਗਰਮੀਆਂ ਦੀ) ਧੁੱਪ ਤੇ (ਸਿਆਲ ਦਾ) ਪਾਲਾ ਮੇਰੇ (ਪਹਿਨਣ ਦਾ) ਕੱਪੜਾ ਹੋਣ (ਭਾਵ, ਜੇ ਮੈਂ ਨੰਗਾ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਧੁੱਪ ਤੇ ਪਾਲਾ ਭੀ ਸਹਾਰਾਂ), ਜੇ ਹਵਾ ਮੇਰੀ ਖ਼ੁਰਾਕ ਹੋਵੇ (ਭਾਵ, ਜੇ ਮੈਂ ਪਉਣ-ਅਹਾਰੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਵਾਂ, ਤਾਂ ਭੀ, ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੇਰੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੇ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਇਹ ਤੁੱਛ ਹਨ)।
If fire and ice were my clothes, and the wind was my food;
ਸੁਰਗੈਦੀਆਮੋਹਣੀਆਇਸਤਰੀਆਹੋਵਨਿਨਾਨਕਸਭੋਜਾਉ॥
ਜੇ ਸੁਰਗ ਦੀਆਂ ਅਪੱਛਰਾਂ ਭੀ ਮੇਰੇ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਹੋਣ ਤਾਂ ਭੀ, ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਇਹ ਤਾਂ ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਹਨ।
and even if the enticing heavenly beauties were my wives, O Nanak-all this shall pass away!
ਭੀਤੂਹੈਸਾਲਾਹਣਾਆਖਣਲਹੈਨਚਾਉ॥੪॥
(ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਨਾਹ ਵਿਸਾਰਾਂ) ਤੇਰੀ ਹੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਾਂ, ਤੇਰੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਚਾਉ ਨਾ ਮੁੱਕੇ ॥੪॥
Even then, I would worship and adore You, and my longing to chant Your Praises would not decrease. ||4||

Pauree:
ਬਦਫੈਲੀਗੈਬਾਨਾਖਸਮੁਨਜਾਣਈ॥
(ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਲੁਕ ਕੇ ਪਾਪ ਕਮਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਨੂੰ (ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਹਾਜ਼ਰ ਨਾਜ਼ਰ) ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦਾ,
The foolish demon, who does evil deeds, does not know his Lord and Master.
ਸੋਕਹੀਐਦੇਵਾਨਾਆਪੁਨਪਛਾਣਈ॥
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਾਗਲ ਕਹਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਅਸਲੇ ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ।
Call him a mad-man, if he does not understand himself.
ਕਲਹਿਬੁਰੀਸੰਸਾਰਿਵਾਦੇਖਪੀਐ॥
ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ) ਬਿਖਾਂਧ (ਐਸੀ) ਚੰਦਰੀ ਹੈ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ) ਝੰਬੇਲੇ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਖਪਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
The strife of this world is evil; these struggles are consuming it.
ਵਿਣੁਨਾਵੈਵੇਕਾਰਿਭਰਮੇਪਚੀਐ॥
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਮੰਦ ਕਰਮ ਤੇ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਵਿਚ ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
Without the Lord's Name, life is worthless. Through doubt, the people are being destroyed.
ਰਾਹਦੋਵੈਇਕੁਜਾਣੈਸੋਈਸਿਝਸੀ॥
(ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ) ਦੋ ਰਸਤੇ ਹਨ (ਮਾਇਆ ਤੇ ਨਾਮ), ਇਸ (ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿਚ) ਉਹੀ ਕਾਮਯਾਬ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ (ਦੋਹਾਂ ਰਸਤਿਆਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਚੇਤੇ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ,
One who recognizes that all spiritual paths lead to the One shall be emancipated.
ਕੁਫਰਗੋਅਕੁਫਰਾਣੈਪਇਆਦਝਸੀ॥
(ਨਹੀਂ ਤਾਂ) ਝੂਠ ਵਿਚ ਗ਼ਲਤਾਨ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੀ ਸੜਦਾ ਹੈ।
One who speaks lies shall fall into hell and burn.
ਸਭਦੁਨੀਆਸੁਬਹਾਨੁਸਚਿਸਮਾਈਐ॥
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਲਈ ਸਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਹੈ।
In all the world, the most blessed and sanctified are those who remain absorbed in Truth.
ਸਿਝੈਦਰਿਦੀਵਾਨਿਆਪੁਗਵਾਈਐ॥੯॥
ਉਹ ਖ਼ੁਦੀ ਮਿਟਾ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਰਖ਼ਰੂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੯॥
One who eliminates selfishness and conceit is redeemed in the Court of the Lord. ||9||
ਮਃ੧ਸਲੋਕੁ॥
First Mahalaa, Shalok:
ਸੋਜੀਵਿਆਜਿਸੁਮਨਿਵਸਿਆਸੋਇ॥
(ਅਸਲ ਵਿਚ) ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜੀਊਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵੱਸ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।
They alone are truly alive, whose minds are filled with the Lord.
ਨਾਨਕਅਵਰੁਨਜੀਵੈਕੋਇ॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਬੰਦਗੀ ਵਾਲੇ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਜੀਊਂਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।
O Nanak, no one else is truly alive;
ਜੇਜੀਵੈਪਤਿਲਥੀਜਾਇ॥
ਜੇ ਨਾਮ-ਵਿਹੂਣਾ (ਵੇਖਣ ਨੂੰ) ਜੀਊਂਦਾ (ਭੀ) ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਗਵਾ ਕੇ (ਏਥੋਂ) ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
those who merely live shall depart in dishonor;
ਸਭੁਹਰਾਮੁਜੇਤਾਕਿਛੁਖਾਇ॥
ਜੋ ਕੁਝ (ਏਥੇ) ਖਾਂਦਾ ਪੀਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਹਰਾਮ ਹੀ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
everything they eat is impure.
ਰਾਜਿਰੰਗੁਮਾਲਿਰੰਗੁ॥
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਰਾਜ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਰ ਹੈ, ਮਾਲ ਵਿਚ ਮੋਹ ਹੈ,
Intoxicated with power and thrilled with wealth,
ਰੰਗਿਰਤਾਨਚੈਨੰਗੁ॥
ਉਹ ਇਸ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਬੇ-ਸ਼ਰਮ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਨੱਚਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਮੱਚਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਕੜਦਾ ਹੈ)।
they delight in their pleasures, and dance about shamelessly.
ਨਾਨਕਠਗਿਆਮੁਠਾਜਾਇ॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਉਹ) ਮਨੁੱਖ ਠੱਗਿਆ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਲੁੱਟਿਆ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ,
O Nanak, they are deluded and defrauded.
ਵਿਣੁਨਾਵੈਪਤਿਗਇਆਗਵਾਇ॥੧॥
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣਾ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਗਵਾ ਕੇ (ਇਥੋਂ) ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
Without the Lord's Name, they lose their honor and depart. ||1||

ਕਿਆਖਾਧੈਕਿਆਪੈਧੈਹੋਇ॥
(ਸੋਹਣੇ ਭੋਜਨ) ਖਾਣ ਤੇ (ਸੋਹਣੇ ਕਪੜੇ) ਹੰਢਾਣ ਦਾ ਕੀਹ ਸੁਆਦ?
What good is food, and what good are clothes,
ਜਾਮਨਿਨਾਹੀਸਚਾਸੋਇ॥
ਜੇ ਉਹ ਸੱਚਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਵੱਸਦਾ, (ਜਿਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਹਨ)।
if the True Lord does not abide within the mind?
ਕਿਆਮੇਵਾਕਿਆਘਿਉਗੁੜੁਮਿਠਾਕਿਆਮੈਦਾਕਿਆਮਾਸੁ॥
ਕੀਹ ਹੋਇਆ ਜੇ ਮੇਵੇ, ਘਿਉ, ਮਿੱਠਾ ਗੁੜ ਮੈਦਾ ਤੇ ਮਾਸ ਆਦਿਕ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਵਰਤੇ?
What good are fruits, what good is ghee, sweet jaggery, what good is flour, and what good is meat?
ਕਿਆਕਪੜੁਕਿਆਸੇਜਸੁਖਾਲੀਕੀਜਹਿਭੋਗਬਿਲਾਸ॥
ਕੀ ਹੋਇਆ ਜੇ (ਸੋਹਣੇ) ਕੱਪੜੇ ਤੇ ਸੌਖੀ ਸੇਜ ਮਿਲ ਗਈ ਤੇ ਜੇ ਮੌਜਾਂ ਮਾਣ ਲਈਆਂ?
What good are clothes, and what good is a soft bed, to enjoy pleasures and sensual delights?
ਕਿਆਲਸਕਰਕਿਆਨੇਬਖਵਾਸੀਆਵੈਮਹਲੀਵਾਸੁ॥
ਤਾਂ ਕੀਹ ਬਣ ਗਿਆ ਜੇ ਫ਼ੌਜ, ਚੋਬਦਾਰ, ਚੋਰੀ-ਬਰਦਾਰ ਮਿਲ ਗਏ ਤੇ ਮਹਲਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸਣਾ ਨਸੀਬ ਹੋਇਆ?
What good is an army, and what good are soldiers, servants and mansions to live in?
ਨਾਨਕਸਚੇਨਾਮਵਿਣੁਸਭੇਟੋਲਵਿਣਾਸੁ॥੨॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਸਾਰੇ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਹਨ ॥੨॥
O Nanak, without the True Name, all this paraphernalia shall disappear. ||2||
ਪਵੜੀ॥
Pauree:
ਜਾਤੀਦੈਕਿਆਹਥਿਸਚੁਪਰਖੀਐ॥
(ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਤਾਂ) ਸੱਚਾ ਨਾਮ (-ਰੂਪ ਸਉਦਾ) ਪਰਖਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਾਤਿ ਦੇ ਹੱਥ ਵਿਚ ਕੁਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਕਿਸੇ ਜਾਤਿ ਵਰਣ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਲਿਹਾਜ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ)।
What good is social class and status? Truthfulness is measured within.
ਮਹੁਰਾਹੋਵੈਹਥਿਮਰੀਐਚਖੀਐ॥
(ਜਾਤਿ ਦਾ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਮਹੁਰੇ ਸਮਾਨ ਹੈ) ਜੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਪਾਸ ਮਹੁਰਾ ਹੋਵੇ (ਭਾਵੇਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਜਾਤਿ ਦਾ ਹੋਵੇ) ਜੇ ਮਹੁਰਾ ਖਾਇਗਾ ਤਾਂ ਮਰੇਗਾ।
Pride in one's status is like poison-holding it in your hand and eating it, you shall die.
ਸਚੇਕੀਸਿਰਕਾਰਜੁਗੁਜੁਗੁਜਾਣੀਐ॥
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਨਿਆਂ ਹਰੇਕ ਜੁਗ ਵਿਚ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਸਮਝ ਲਵੋ (ਭਾਵ, ਕਿਸੇ ਭੀ ਜੁਗ ਵਿਚ ਜਾਤਿ ਦਾ ਲਿਹਾਜ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਇਆ)।
The True Lord's Sovereign Rule is known throughout the ages.
ਹੁਕਮੁਮੰਨੇਸਿਰਦਾਰੁਦਰਿਦੀਬਾਣੀਐ॥
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਉਹੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਮੰਨਦਾ ਹੈ।
One who respects the Hukam of the Lord's Command is honored and respected in the Court of the Lord.
ਫੁਰਮਾਨੀਹੈਕਾਰਖਸਮਿਪਠਾਇਆ॥
ਖਸਮ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ) ਨੇ (ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ) ਹੁਕਮ ਮੰਨਣ-ਰੂਪ ਕਾਰ ਦੇ ਕੇ (ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ) ਭੇਜਿਆ ਹੈ।
By the Order of our Lord and Master, we have been brought into this world.
ਤਬਲਬਾਜਬੀਚਾਰਸਬਦਿਸੁਣਾਇਆ॥
ਨਗਾਚਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਇਹੀ ਗੱਲ ਸੁਣਾਈ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਇਸੇ ਗੱਲ ਦਾ ਢੰਡੋਰਾ ਦੇ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ)।
The Drummer, the Guru, has announced the Lord's meditation, through the Word of the Shabad.
ਇਕਿਹੋਏਅਸਵਾਰਇਕਨਾਸਾਖਤੀ॥
(ਇਹ ਢੰਡੋਰਾ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ) ਕਈ (ਗੁਰਮੁਖ) ਤਾਂ ਅਸਵਾਰ ਹੋ ਗਏ ਹਨ (ਭਾਵ, ਇਸ ਰਾਹ ਤੇ ਤੁਰ ਪਏ ਹਨ), ਕਈ ਬੰਦੇ ਤਿਆਰ ਹੋ ਪਏ ਹਨ,
Some have mounted their horses in response, and others are saddling up.
ਇਕਨੀਬਧੇਭਾਰਇਕਨਾਤਾਖਤੀ॥੧੦॥
ਕਈਆਂ ਨੇ ਅਸਬਾਬ ਲੱਦ ਲਏ ਹਨ, ਤੇ ਕਈ ਛੇਤੀ ਦੌੜ ਪਏ ਹਨ ॥੧੦॥
Some have tied up their bridles, and others have already ridden off. ||10||
ਸਲੋਕੁਮਃ੧॥
Shalok, First Mahalaa:
ਜਾਪਕਾਤਾਕਟਿਆਰਹੀਸੁਪਲਰਿਵਾੜਿ॥
ਜਦੋਂ (ਕਣਕ ਆਦਿਕ ਫ਼ਸਲ ਦਾ ਬੂਟਾ) ਪੱਕ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ (ਉਤੋਂ ਉਤੋਂ) ਵੱਢ ਲਈਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਕਣਕ ਦੀ) ਨਾੜ ਤੇ (ਪੈਲੀ ਦੀ) ਵਾੜ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਰਹਿ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
When the crop is ripe, then it is cut down; only the stalks are left standing.
ਸਣੁਕੀਸਾਰਾਚਿਥਿਆਕਣੁਲਇਆਤਨੁਝਾੜਿ॥
ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਿੱਟਿਆਂ ਸਮੇਤ ਗਾਹ ਲਈਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਬੋਹਲ ਉਡਾ ਕੇ ਦਾਣੇ ਕੱਢ ਲਈਦੇ ਹਨ।
The corn on the cob is put into the thresher, and the kernels are separated from the cobs.
ਦੁਇਪੁੜਚਕੀਜੋੜਿਕੈਪੀਸਣਆਇਬਹਿਠੁ॥
ਚੱਕੀ ਦੇ ਦੋਵੇਂ ਪੁੜ ਰੱਖ ਕੇ (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦਾਣਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ) ਪੀਹਣ ਲਈ (ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ) ਆ ਬੈਠਦਾ ਹੈ,
Placing the kernels between the two mill-stones, people sit and grind the corn.
ਜੋਦਰਿਰਹੇਸੁਉਬਰੇਨਾਨਕਅਜਬੁਡਿਠੁ॥੧॥
(ਪਰ) ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਇਕ ਅਚਰਜ ਤਮਾਸ਼ਾ ਵੇਖਿਆ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਦਾਣੇ (ਚੱਕੀ ਦੇ) ਦਰ ਤੇ (ਭਾਵ, ਕਿੱਲੀ ਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ) ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਪੀਸਣੋਂ ਬਚ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ (ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ, ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਪੋਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦੇ) ॥੧॥
Those kernels which stick to the central axle are spared-Nanak has seen this wonderful vision! ||1||

(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਵੇਖ ਕਿ ਗੰਨਾ ਵੱਢੀਦਾ ਹੈ, ਛਿੱਲ ਛਿੱਲ ਕੇ, ਰੱਸੀ ਪਾ ਕੇ ਬੰਨ੍ਹ ਲਈਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਭਰੀਆਂ ਬੰਨ੍ਹ ਲਈਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ)।
