ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਨਾਮਿਸਮਾਇਸਮਾਵੈਨਾਨਕਨਾਮੁਧਿਆਈਹੇ॥੧੨॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਿਚ) ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੨॥
The Gurmukh is immersed and absorbed in the Naam; Nanak meditates on the Naam. ||12||
ਭਗਤਾਮੁਖਿਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਹੈਬਾਣੀ॥
ਭਗਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਵਿਚ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਟਿਕੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
The Ambrosial Nectar of the Guru's Bani is in the mouth of the devotees.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਹਰਿਨਾਮੁਆਖਿਵਖਾਣੀ॥
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਆਪ) ਉਚਾਰ ਕੇ (ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ) ਸੁਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
The Gurmukhs chant and repeat the Lord's Name.
ਹਰਿਹਰਿਕਰਤਸਦਾਮਨੁਬਿਗਸੈਹਰਿਚਰਣੀਮਨੁਲਾਈਹੇ॥੧੩॥
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਿਆਂ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਸਦਾ ਖਿੜਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੩॥
Chanting the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, their minds forever blossom forth; they focus their minds on the Lord's Feet. ||13||
ਹਮਮੂਰਖਅਗਿਆਨਗਿਆਨੁਕਿਛੁਨਾਹੀ॥
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਅਸੀਂ ਜੀਵ ਮੂਰਖ ਹਾਂ, ਅੰਞਾਣ ਹਾਂ, ਸਾਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਕੁਝ ਭੀ ਸੂਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।
I am foolish and ignorant; I have no wisdom at all.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਤੇਸਮਝਪੜੀਮਨਮਾਹੀ॥
ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ (ਇਹ) ਸਮਝ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
From the True Guru, I have obtained understanding in my mind.
ਹੋਹੁਦਇਆਲੁਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਕਰਿਹਰਿਜੀਉਸਤਿਗੁਰਕੀਸੇਵਾਲਾਈਹੇ॥੧੪॥
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਦਇਆਵਾਨ ਹੋ, ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰ, (ਸਾਨੂੰ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਵਿਚ ਲਾਈ ਰੱਖ ॥੧੪॥
O Dear Lord, please be kind to me, and grant Your Grace; let me be committed to serving the True Guru. ||14||
ਜਿਨਿਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਜਾਤਾਤਿਨਿਏਕੁਪਛਾਤਾ॥
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾ ਲਈ, ਉਸ ਨੇ ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ (ਇਉਂ) ਪਛਾਣ ਲਿਆ,
Those who know the True Guru realize the One Lord.
ਸਰਬੇਰਵਿਰਹਿਆਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ॥
ਕਿ ਉਹ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।
The Giver of peace is all-pervading, permeating everywhere.
ਆਤਮੁਚੀਨਿਪਰਮਪਦੁਪਾਇਆਸੇਵਾਸੁਰਤਿਸਮਾਈਹੇ॥੧੫॥
ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਪੜਤਾਲ ਕੇ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਚਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਦਰਜਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ। ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸੁਰਤ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ-ਭਗਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੧੫॥
Understanding my own soul, I have obtained the Supreme Status; my awareness is immersed in selfless service. ||15||
ਜਿਨਕਉਆਦਿਮਿਲੀਵਡਿਆਈ॥
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਧੁਰ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਤੋਂ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ,
Those who are blessed with glorious greatness by the Primal Lord God
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਮਨਿਵਸਿਆਲਿਵਲਾਈ॥
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਗੁਰੂ ਵੱਸਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
are lovingly focused on the True Guru, who dwells within their minds.
ਆਪਿਮਿਲਿਆਜਗਜੀਵਨੁਦਾਤਾਨਾਨਕਅੰਕਿਸਮਾਈਹੇ॥੧੬॥੧॥
ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਰਤ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ। ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਜਗਤ ਦਾ ਸਹਾਰਾ ਦਾਤਾਰ ਆਪ ਆ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਗੋਦ ਵਿਚ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਸਮਾਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧੬॥੧॥
The Giver of life to the world Himself meets them; O Nanak, they are absorbed in His Being. ||16||1||
ਮਾਰੂਮਹਲਾ੪॥
Maaroo, Fourth Mahalaa:
ਹਰਿਅਗਮਅਗੋਚਰੁਸਦਾਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ॥
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਅਪਹੁੰਚ ਹੈ, ਇੰਦ੍ਰਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਹੈ, ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਨਾਸ ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ,
The Lord is inaccessible and unfathomable; He is eternal and imperishable.
ਸਰਬੇਰਵਿਰਹਿਆਘਟਵਾਸੀ॥
ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ, ਸਭ ਸਰੀਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ।
He dwells in the heart, and is all-pervading, permeating everywhere.
ਤਿਸੁਬਿਨੁਅਵਰੁਨਕੋਈਦਾਤਾਹਰਿਤਿਸਹਿਸਰੇਵਹੁਪ੍ਰਾਣੀਹੇ॥੧॥
ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਦਾਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ! ਉਸੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਿਆ ਕਰੋ ॥੧॥
There is no other Giver except Him; worship the Lord, O mortals. ||1||
ਜਾਕਉਰਾਖੈਹਰਿਰਾਖਣਹਾਰਾ॥
ਬਚਾਣ ਦੀ ਸਮਰਥਾ ਵਾਲਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਜਿਸ (ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਦੀ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
No one can kill anyone
ਤਾਕਉਕੋਇਨਸਾਕਸਿਮਾਰਾ॥
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਮਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ।
who is saved by the Savior Lord.
ਸੋਐਸਾਹਰਿਸੇਵਹੁਸੰਤਹੁਜਾਕੀਊਤਮਬਾਣੀਹੇ॥੨॥
ਹੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨੋ! ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ-ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਿਆ ਕਰੋ। ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਉੱਚਾ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
So serve such a Lord, O Saints, whose Bani is exalted and sublime. ||2||
ਜਾਜਾਪੈਕਿਛੁਕਿਥਾਊਨਾਹੀ॥
ਜਦੋਂ ਇਹ ਸਮਝ ਆ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਕਿਤੇ ਭੀ ਕੋਈ ਚੀਜ਼ (ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ) ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ,
When it seems that a place is empty and void,
ਤਾਕਰਤਾਭਰਪੂਰਿਸਮਾਹੀ॥
ਤਦੋਂ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਸਮਝੋ (ਜੋ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ)।
there, the Creator Lord is permeating and pervading.
ਸੂਕੇਤੇਫੁਨਿਹਰਿਆਕੀਤੋਨੁਹਰਿਧਿਆਵਹੁਚੋਜਵਿਡਾਣੀਹੇ॥੩॥
ਉਹ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਸੁੱਕੇ ਤੋਂ ਹਰਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ। ਉਸ ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਰਹੋ, ਉਹ ਅਸਚਰਜ ਕੌਤਕ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
He causes the dried-up branch to blossom forth in greenery again; so meditate on the Lord - wondrous are His ways! ||3||
ਜੋਜੀਆਕੀਵੇਦਨਜਾਣੈ॥
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜੋ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਦਿਲ ਦੀ ਪੀੜ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ,
The One who knows the anguish of all beings
ਤਿਸੁਸਾਹਿਬਕੈਹਉਕੁਰਬਾਣੈ॥
ਮੈਂ ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਮਾਲਕ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਕੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ।
unto that Lord and Master, I am a sacrifice.
ਤਿਸੁਆਗੈਜਨਕਰਿਬੇਨੰਤੀਜੋਸਰਬਸੁਖਾਕਾਦਾਣੀਹੇ॥੪॥
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਅਰਦਾਸ ਕਰਿਆ ਕਰ, ਜਿਹੜਾ ਸਾਰੇ ਸੁਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
Offer your prayers to the One who is the Giver of all peace and joy. ||4||
ਜੋਜੀਐਕੀਸਾਰਨਜਾਣੈ॥
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਦੀ) ਜਿੰਦ ਦਾ ਦੁੱਖ-ਦਰਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝ ਸਕਦਾ,
But one who does not know the state of the soul
ਤਿਸੁਸਿਉਕਿਛੁਨਕਹੀਐਅਜਾਣੈ॥
ਉਸ ਮੂਰਖ ਨਾਲ (ਆਪਣੇ ਦੁੱਖ-ਦਰਦ ਦੀ) ਕੋਈ ਗੱਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਨੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ।
do not say anything to such an ignorant person.
ਮੂਰਖਸਿਉਨਹਲੂਝੁਪਰਾਣੀਹਰਿਜਪੀਐਪਦੁਨਿਰਬਾਣੀਹੇ॥੫॥
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ! ਉਸ ਮੂਰਖ ਨਾਲ ਕੋਈ ਝੇੜਾ ਨਾਹ ਕਰ। ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹੀ ਵਾਸਨਾ-ਰਹਿਤ ਆਤਮਕ ਦਰਜਾ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
Do not argue with fools, O mortals. Meditate on the Lord, in the state of Nirvaanaa. ||5||
ਨਾਕਰਿਚਿੰਤਚਿੰਤਾਹੈਕਰਤੇ॥
(ਰੋਜ਼ੀ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ) ਚਿੰਤਾ-ਫ਼ਿਕਰ ਨਾਹ ਕਰ, ਇਹ ਫ਼ਿਕਰ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਹੈ।
Don't worry - let the Creator take care of it.
ਹਰਿਦੇਵੈਜਲਿਥਲਿਜੰਤਾਸਭਤੈ॥
ਉਹ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਜਲ ਵਿਚ ਧਰਤੀ ਵਿਚ (ਵੱਸਣ ਵਾਲੇ) ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਰਿਜ਼ਕ) ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
The Lord gives to all creatures in the water and on the land.
ਅਚਿੰਤਦਾਨੁਦੇਇਪ੍ਰਭੁਮੇਰਾਵਿਚਿਪਾਥਰਕੀਟਪਖਾਣੀਹੇ॥੬॥
ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਉਹ ਉਹ ਦਾਤ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਚਿੱਤ-ਚੇਤਾ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ। ਪੱਥਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਕੀੜਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ (ਰਿਜ਼ਕ) ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
My God bestows His blessings without being asked, even to worms in soil and stones. ||6||
ਨਾਕਰਿਆਸਮੀਤਸੁਤਭਾਈ॥
ਮਿੱਤਰ ਦੀ, ਪੁੱਤਰ ਦੀ, ਭਰਾ ਦੀ-ਕਿਸੇ ਦੀ ਭੀ ਆਸ ਨਾਹ ਕਰ।
Do not place your hopes in friends, children and siblings.
ਨਾਕਰਿਆਸਕਿਸੈਸਾਹਬਿਉਹਾਰਕੀਪਰਾਈ॥
ਕਿਸੇ ਸ਼ਾਹ ਦੀ, ਕਿਸੇ ਵਿਹਾਰ ਦੀ-ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਪਰਾਈ ਆਸ ਨਾਹ ਕਰ।
Do not place your hopes in kings or the business of others.
ਬਿਨੁਹਰਿਨਾਵੈਕੋਬੇਲੀਨਾਹੀਹਰਿਜਪੀਐਸਾਰੰਗਪਾਣੀਹੇ॥੭॥
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਮਦਦਗਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ। ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੭॥
Without the Lord's Name, no one will be your helper; so meditate on the Lord, the Lord of the world. ||7||
ਅਨਦਿਨੁਨਾਮੁਜਪਹੁਬਨਵਾਰੀ॥
ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦੇ ਰਹੋ।
Night and day, chant the Naam.
ਸਭਆਸਾਮਨਸਾਪੂਰੈਥਾਰੀ॥
ਉਹੀ ਤੇਰੀ ਹਰੇਕ ਆਸ ਪੂਰੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇਰਾ ਹਰੇਕ ਫੁਰਨਾ ਪੂਰਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
All your hopes and desires shall be fulfilled.
ਜਨਨਾਨਕਨਾਮੁਜਪਹੁਭਵਖੰਡਨੁਸੁਖਿਸਹਜੇਰੈਣਿਵਿਹਾਣੀਹੇ॥੮॥
ਹੇ ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ! ਸਦਾ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦੇ ਰਹੋ। ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਦਾ ਨਾਸ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ। (ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜਪਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੀ) ਉਮਰ-ਰਾਤ ਸੁਖ ਵਿਚ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਬੀਤਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੮॥
O servant Nanak, chant the Naam, the Name of the Destroyer of fear, and your life-night shall pass in intuitive peace and poise. ||8||
ਜਿਨਿਹਰਿਸੇਵਿਆਤਿਨਿਸੁਖੁਪਾਇਆ॥
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਸੁਖ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕੀਤਾ।
Those who serve the Lord find peace.
ਸਹਜੇਹੀਹਰਿਨਾਮਿਸਮਾਇਆ॥
ਉਹ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਿਸੇ (ਤਪ ਆਦਿਕ) ਜਤਨ ਦੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
They are intuitively absorbed in the Lord's Name.
ਜੋਸਰਣਿਪਰੈਤਿਸਕੀਪਤਿਰਾਖੈਜਾਇਪੂਛਹੁਵੇਦਪੁਰਾਣੀਹੇ॥੯॥
ਬੇਸ਼ੱਕ ਵੇਦਾਂ ਪੁਰਾਣਾਂ (ਦੇ ਪੜ੍ਹਨ ਵਾਲਿਆਂ) ਪਾਸੋਂ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਪੁੱਛ ਲਵੋ। ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਲਾਜ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੯॥
The Lord preserves the honor of those who seek His Sanctuary; go and consult the Vedas and the Puraanas. ||9||
ਜਿਸੁਹਰਿਸੇਵਾਲਾਏਸੋਈਜਨੁਲਾਗੈ॥
ਪਰ, ਉਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
That humble being is attached to the Lord's service, whom the Lord so attaches.
ਗੁਰਕੈਸਬਦਿਭਰਮਭਉਭਾਗੈ॥
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, doubt and fear are dispelled.
ਵਿਚੇਗ੍ਰਿਹਸਦਾਰਹੈਉਦਾਸੀਜਿਉਕਮਲੁਰਹੈਵਿਚਿਪਾਣੀਹੇ॥੧੦॥
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕੌਲ ਫੁੱਲ ਪਾਣੀ ਵਿਚ (ਪਾਣੀ ਤੋਂ) ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਿਵੇਂ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਸਤ ਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ (ਮਾਇਆ ਤੋਂ) ਸਦਾ ਉਪਰਾਮ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੦॥
In his own home, he remains unattached, like the lotus flower in the water. ||10||
