ਮੂੜੇਤੈਮਨਤੇਰਾਮੁਬਿਸਾਰਿਓ॥
ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ! ਤੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਤੋਂ ਭੁਲਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ।
You fool, you have forgotten the Lord from your mind!
ਲੂਣੁਖਾਇਕਰਹਿਹਰਾਮਖੋਰੀਪੇਖਤਨੈਨਬਿਦਾਰਿਓ॥੧॥ਰਹਾਉ॥
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਖਾ ਕੇ ਬੜੀ ਬੇ-ਸ਼ਰਮੀ ਨਾਲ ਤੂੰ ਹਰਾਮਖੋਰੀ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
You eat His salt, and then you are untrue to Him; before your very eyes, you shall be torn apart. ||1||Pause||
ਅਸਾਧਰੋਗੁਉਪਜਿਓਤਨਭੀਤਰਿਟਰਤਨਕਾਹੂਟਾਰਿਓ॥
ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ! (ਜਦੋਂ ਹਰਾਮਖ਼ੋਰੀ ਦਾ ਇਹ) ਅਸਾਧ ਰੋਗ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕਿਸੇ ਭੀ ਹੋਰ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਨਾਲ ਦੂਰ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਇਹ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ।
The incurable disease has arisen in your body; it cannot be removed or overcome.
ਪ੍ਰਭਬਿਸਰਤਮਹਾਦੁਖੁਪਾਇਓਇਹੁਨਾਨਕਤਤੁਬੀਚਾਰਿਓ॥੨॥੮॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਭੇਤ ਸਮਝਿਆ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਭੁਲਾ ਕੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਬੜਾ ਦੁੱਖ ਸਹਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥੮॥
Forgetting God, one endures utter agony; this is the essence of reality which Nanak has realized. ||2||8||
ਮਾਰੂਮਹਲਾ੫॥
Maaroo, Fifth Mahalaa:
ਚਰਨਕਮਲਪ੍ਰਭਰਾਖੇਚੀਤਿ॥
ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਚਰਨ (ਸਦਾ ਆਪਣੇ) ਚਿੱਤ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਏ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ,
I have enshrined the lotus feet of God within my consciousness.
ਹਰਿਗੁਣਗਾਵਹਨੀਤਾਨੀਤ॥
ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੇ ਗੀਤ ਗਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
I sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, continually, continuously.
ਤਿਸੁਬਿਨੁਦੂਜਾਅਵਰੁਨਕੋਊ॥
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਸਹਾਰਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ (ਜੋ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿ ਸਕੇ।
There is none other than Him at all.
ਆਦਿਮਧਿਅੰਤਿਹੈਸੋਊ॥੧॥
ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਨਿਸਚਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹੀ ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਵਿਚ, ਵਿਚਕਾਰਲੇ ਸਮੇ ਵਿਚ, ਅਤੇ ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਅੰਤ ਵਿਚ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
He alone exists, in the beginning, in the middle, and in the end. ||1||
ਸੰਤਨਕੀਓਟਆਪੇਆਪਿ॥੧॥ਰਹਾਉ॥
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹੀ (ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਦਾ) ਆਸਰਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
He Himself is the Shelter of the Saints. ||1||Pause||
ਜਾਕੈਵਸਿਹੈਸਗਲਸੰਸਾਰੁ॥
ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਸਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ ਹੈ,
The entire universe is under His control.
ਆਪੇਆਪਿਆਪਿਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੁ॥
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ ਸਦਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਆਪ ਹੈ,
He Himself, the Formless Lord, is Himself by Himself.
ਨਾਨਕਗਹਿਓਸਾਚਾਸੋਇ॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਨੇ) ਉਸ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
Nanak holds tight to that True Lord.
ਸੁਖੁਪਾਇਆਫਿਰਿਦੂਖੁਨਹੋਇ॥੨॥੯॥
ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਾਣਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਦੁੱਖ ਪੋਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ ॥੨॥੯॥
He has found peace, and shall never suffer pain again. ||2||9||

ਰਾਗ ਮਾਰੂ, ਘਰ ੩ ਵਿੱਚ ਗੁਰੂ ਅਰਜਨਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ।
Maaroo, Fifth Mahalaa, Third House:
ੴਸਤਿਗੁਰਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ॥
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:
ਪ੍ਰਾਨਸੁਖਦਾਤਾਜੀਅਸੁਖਦਾਤਾਤੁਮਕਾਹੇਬਿਸਾਰਿਓਅਗਿਆਨਥ॥
ਹੇ ਅਗਿਆਨੀ! ਤੂੰ ਕਿਉਂ ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਭੁਲਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਜਿੰਦ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ਸਾਰੇ ਸੁਖ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਖ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ।
He is the Giver of peace to the breath of life, the Giver of life to the soul; how can you forget Him, you ignorant person?
ਹੋਛਾਮਦੁਚਾਖਿਹੋਏਤੁਮਬਾਵਰਦੁਲਭਜਨਮੁਅਕਾਰਥ॥੧॥
ਛੇਤੀ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਣ ਵਾਲਾ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦਾ) ਨਸ਼ਾ ਚੱਖ ਕੇ ਤੂੰ ਝੱਲਾ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ, ਤੇਰਾ ਕੀਮਤੀ ਜਨਮ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
You taste the weak, insipid wine, and you have gone insane. You have uselessly wasted this precious human life. ||1||
ਰੇਨਰਐਸੀਕਰਹਿਇਆਨਥ॥
ਹੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ! ਤੂੰ ਬੜੀ ਮਾੜੀ ਬੇ-ਅਕਲੀ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ,
O man, such is the foolishness you practice.
ਤਜਿਸਾਰੰਗਧਰਭ੍ਰਮਿਤੂਭੂਲਾਮੋਹਿਲਪਟਿਓਦਾਸੀਸੰਗਿਸਾਨਥ॥੧॥ਰਹਾਉ॥
ਕਿ ਤੂੰ ਧਰਤੀ ਦੇ ਆਸਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈਂ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਨਾਲ ਚੰਬੜਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈਂ ਅਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ-ਦਾਸੀ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਥ ਬਣਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Renouncing the Lord, the Support of the earth, you wander, deluded by doubt; you are engrossed in emotional attachment, associating with Maya, the slave-girl. ||1||Pause||
ਧਰਣੀਧਰੁਤਿਆਗਿਨੀਚਕੁਲਸੇਵਹਿਹਉਹਉਕਰਤਬਿਹਾਵਥ॥
ਧਰਤੀ ਦੇ ਆਸਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਤਿਆਗ ਕੇ ਤੂੰ ਨੀਵੀਂ ਕੁਲ ਵਾਲੀ ਮਾਇਆ-ਦਾਸੀ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ, (ਇਸ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ) 'ਮੈਂ ਮੈਂ' ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਉਮਰ ਬੀਤ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ।
Abandoning the Lord, the Support of the earth, you serve her of lowly ancestry, and you pass your life acting egotistically.
ਫੋਕਟਕਰਮਕਰਹਿਅਗਿਆਨੀਮਨਮੁਖਿਅੰਧਕਹਾਵਥ॥੨॥
ਹੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਮੁਰੀਦ ਮੂਰਖ! ਤੂੰ ਫੋਕੇ ਕੰਮ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ, (ਅੱਖਾਂ ਹੁੰਦਿਆਂ ਭੀ) ਤੂੰ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵੱਲੋਂ) ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਅਖਵਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ ॥੨॥
You do useless deeds, you ignorant person; this is why you are called a blind, self-willed manmukh. ||2||
ਸਤਿਹੋਤਾਅਸਤਿਕਰਿਮਾਨਿਆਜੋਬਿਨਸਤਸੋਨਿਹਚਲੁਜਾਨਥ॥
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਤੂੰ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਹਸਤੀ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਮੰਨਦਾ, ਜਿਹੜਾ ਇਹ ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਜਗਤ ਹੈ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਤੂੰ ਅਟੱਲ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈਂ।
That which is true, you believe to be untrue; what is transitory, you believe to be permanent.
ਪਰਕੀਕਉਅਪਨੀਕਰਿਪਕਰੀਐਸੇਭੂਲਭੁਲਾਨਥ॥੩॥
ਜਿਸ ਮਾਇਆ ਨੇ ਜ਼ਰੂਰ ਪਰਾਈ ਹੋ ਜਾਣਾ ਹੈ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਜਾਣ ਕੇ ਜੱਫਾ ਮਾਰੀ ਬੈਠਾ ਹੈਂ। ਕੈਸੀ ਅਚਰਜ ਭੁੱਲ ਵਿਚ ਭੁੱਲਾ ਪਿਆ ਹੈਂ! ॥੩॥
You grasp as your own, what belongs to others; in such delusions you are deluded. ||3||
ਖਤ੍ਰੀਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣਸੂਦਵੈਸਸਭਏਕੈਨਾਮਿਤਰਾਨਥ॥
ਖੱਤਰੀ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਸ਼ੂਦਰ ਵੈਸ਼ (ਕਿਸੇ ਭੀ ਵਰਨ ਦੇ ਜੀਵ ਹੋਣ) ਸਾਰੇ ਇਕ ਹਰੀ-ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਾਗਰ ਤੋਂ ਤਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
The Kh'shaatriyas, Brahmins, Soodras and Vaishyas all cross over, through the Name of the One Lord.
ਗੁਰੁਨਾਨਕੁਉਪਦੇਸੁਕਹਤੁਹੈਜੋਸੁਨੈਸੋਪਾਰਿਪਰਾਨਥ॥੪॥੧॥੧੦॥
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸੁਣਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੧॥੧੦॥
Guru Nanak speaks the Teachings; whoever listens to them is carried across. ||4||1||10||
ਮਾਰੂਮਹਲਾ੫॥
Maaroo, Fifth Mahalaa:
ਗੁਪਤੁਕਰਤਾਸੰਗਿਸੋਪ੍ਰਭੁਡਹਕਾਵਏਮਨੁਖਾਇ॥
(ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਲੁਕ ਕੇ (ਵਿਕਾਰ) ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਪਰ ਵੇਖਣ ਵਾਲਾ) ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਇਸ ਦੇ) ਨਾਲ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਵਿਕਾਰੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਠੱਗ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ, ਇਹ ਤਾਂ) ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਠੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ।
You may act in secrecy, but God is still with you; you can only deceive other people.
ਬਿਸਾਰਿਹਰਿਜੀਉਬਿਖੈਭੋਗਹਿਤਪਤਥੰਮਗਲਿਲਾਇ॥੧॥
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਸਾਰ ਕੇ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਅੱਗ ਵਿਚ ਸੜ ਸੜ ਕੇ ਤੂੰ ਵਿਸ਼ੇ ਭੋਗਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈਂ ॥੧॥
Forgetting your Dear Lord, you enjoy corrupt pleasures, and so you shall have to embrace red-hot pillars. ||1||
ਰੇਨਰਕਾਇਪਰਗ੍ਰਿਹਿਜਾਇ॥
ਹੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ! ਪਰਾਏ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਇਉਂ (ਮੰਦ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ)?
O man, why do you go out to the households of others?
ਕੁਚਲਕਠੋਰਕਾਮਿਗਰਧਭਤੁਮਨਹੀਸੁਨਿਓਧਰਮਰਾਇ॥੧॥ਰਹਾਉ॥
ਹੇ ਗੰਦੇ! ਹੇ ਪੱਥਰ-ਦਿਲ! ਹੇ ਵਿਸ਼ਈ! ਹੇ ਖੋਤੇ ਮੂਰਖ! ਕੀ ਤੂੰ ਧਰਮਰਾਜ (ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਕਦੇ) ਨਹੀਂ ਸੁਣਿਆ? ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
You filthy, heartless, lustful donkey! Haven't you heard of the Righteous Judge of Dharma? ||1||Pause||
ਬਿਕਾਰਪਾਥਰਗਲਹਿਬਾਧੇਨਿੰਦਪੋਟਸਿਰਾਇ॥
ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੱਥਰ (ਤੇਰੇ) ਗਲ ਨਾਲ ਬੱਝੇ ਪਏ ਹਨ, ਨਿੰਦਾ ਦੀ ਪੋਟਲੀ (ਤੇਰੇ) ਸਿਰ ਉੱਤੇ ਹੈ।
The stone of corruption is tied around your neck, and the load of slander is on your head.
ਮਹਾਸਾਗਰੁਸਮੁਦੁਲੰਘਨਾਪਾਰਿਨਪਰਨਾਜਾਇ॥੨॥
ਵੱਡਾ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ (ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਤੋਂ) ਲੰਘਣਾ ਹੈ (ਇਤਨੇ ਭਾਰ ਨਾਲ ਇਸ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੰਘਿਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ॥੨॥
You must cross over the vast open ocean, but you cannot cross over to the other side. ||2||
ਕਾਮਿਕ੍ਰੋਧਿਲੋਭਿਮੋਹਿਬਿਆਪਿਓਨੇਤ੍ਰਰਖੇਫਿਰਾਇ॥
(ਤੂੰ) ਕਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਵਿਚ, ਲੋਭ ਵਿਚ, ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ, ਫਸਿਆ ਪਿਆ ਹੈਂ; ਤੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਫੇਰ ਰੱਖੀਆਂ ਹਨ।
You are engrossed in sexual desire, anger, greed and emotional attachment; you have turned your eyes away from the Truth.
ਸੀਸੁਉਠਾਵਨਨਕਬਹੂਮਿਲਈਮਹਾਦੁਤਰਮਾਇ॥੩॥
(ਇਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ) ਕਦੇ ਭੀ ਸਿਰ ਚੁੱਕਣਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ। (ਤੇਰੇ ਅੱਗੇ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਵੱਡਾ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਣਾ ਬਹੁਤ ਔਖਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
You cannot even raise your head above the water of the vast, impassable sea of Maya. ||3||
ਸੂਰੁਮੁਕਤਾਸਸੀਮੁਕਤਾਬ੍ਰਹਮਗਿਆਨੀਅਲਿਪਾਇ॥
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾਈ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਤੋਂ ਇਉਂ ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਸੂਰਜ (ਚੰਗੇ ਮੰਦੇ ਹਰੇਕ ਥਾਂ ਆਪਣੀ ਰੌਸ਼ਨੀ ਦੇ ਕੇ) ਮੈਲ ਆਦਿਕ ਤੋਂ ਸਾਫ਼ ਹੈ, ਜਿਵੇਂ ਚੰਦ੍ਰਮਾ ਭੀ (ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਸਾਫ਼ ਹੈ।
The sun is liberated, and the moon is liberated; the God-realized being is pure and untouched.
ਸੁਭਾਵਤਜੈਸੇਬੈਸੰਤਰਅਲਿਪਤਸਦਾਨਿਰਮਲਾਇ॥੪॥
ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਨਾਲ ਜਾਣ-ਪਛਾਣ ਰੱਖਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਇਉਂ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਵੇਂ (ਹਰੇਕ ਕਿਸਮ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਨੂੰ ਸਾੜ ਕੇ ਭੀ) ਅੱਗ (ਮੈਲ ਤੋਂ) ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
His inner nature is like that of fire, untouched and forever immaculate. ||4||
ਜਿਸੁਕਰਮੁਖੁਲਿਆਤਿਸੁਲਹਿਆਪੜਦਾਜਿਨਿਗੁਰਪਹਿਮੰਨਿਆਸੁਭਾਇ॥
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਭਾਗ ਜਾਗ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਨਾਲ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਨੂੰ ਮੰਨ ਲਿਆ ਉਸ (ਦੀਆਂ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ) ਦਾ ਪੜਦਾ ਲਹਿ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
When good karma dawns, the wall of doubt is torn down. He lovingly accepts the Guru's Will.
