First Mahalaa:
मः १ ॥
ਗਲਂੀਅਸੀਚੰਗੀਆਆਚਾਰੀਬੁਰੀਆਹ॥
ਅਸੀਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਚੱਜੀਆਂ (ਹਾਂ, ਪਰ) ਆਚਰਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਮਾੜੀਆਂ ਹਾਂ।
We are good at talking, but our actions are bad.
गलीं असी चंगीआ आचारी बुरीआह ॥
ਮਨਹੁਕੁਸੁਧਾਕਾਲੀਆਬਾਹਰਿਚਿਟਵੀਆਹ॥
ਮਨੋਂ ਖੋਟੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਕਾਲੀਆਂ (ਹਾਂ, ਪਰ) ਬਾਹਰੋਂ ਸਾਫ਼ ਸੁਥਰੀਆਂ।
Mentally, we are impure and black, but outwardly, we appear white.
मनहु कुसुधा कालीआ बाहरि चिटवीआह ॥
ਰੀਸਾਕਰਿਹਤਿਨਾੜੀਆਜੋਸੇਵਹਿਦਰੁਖੜੀਆਹ॥
(ਫਿਰ ਭੀ) ਅਸੀਂ ਰੀਸਾਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਕਰਦੀਆਂ ਹਾਂ ਜੋ ਸਾਵਧਾਨ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ।
We imitate those who stand and serve at the Lord's Door.
रीसा करिह तिनाड़ीआ जो सेवहि दरु खड़ीआह ॥
ਨਾਲਿਖਸਮੈਰਤੀਆਮਾਣਹਿਸੁਖਿਰਲੀਆਹ॥
ਖਸਮ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਭਿੱਜੀਆਂ ਹੋਈਆਂ ਹਨ, ਤੇ ਆਨੰਦ ਵਿਚ ਰਲੀਆਂ ਮਾਣਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ।
They are attuned to the Love of their Husband Lord, and they experience the pleasure of His Love.
नालि खसमै रतीआ माणहि सुखि रलीआह ॥
ਹੋਦੈਤਾਣਿਨਿਤਾਣੀਆਰਹਹਿਨਿਮਾਨਣੀਆਹ॥
ਜੋ ਤਾਣ ਹੁੰਦਿਆਂ ਭੀ ਨਿਰਮਾਣ ਰਹਿੰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ।
They remain powerless, even while they have power; they remain humble and meek.
होदै ताणि निताणीआ रहहि निमानणीआह ॥
ਨਾਨਕਜਨਮੁਸਕਾਰਥਾਜੇਤਿਨਕੈਸੰਗਿਮਿਲਾਹ॥੨॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਸਾਡਾ) ਜਨਮ ਸਫਲ (ਤਾਂ ਹੀ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ) ਜੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਰਹੀਏ ॥੨॥
O Nanak, our lives become profitable if we associate with them. ||2||
नानक जनमु सकारथा जे तिन कै संगि मिलाह ॥२॥
