ਬਾਹਰਿਭਸਮਲੇਪਨਕਰੇਅੰਤਰਿਗੁਬਾਰੀ॥
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਿੰਡੇ ਉਤੇ (ਤਾਂ) ਸੁਆਹ ਮਲ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਪਰ ਉਸ ਦੇ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦਾ) ਹਨੇਰਾ ਹੈ;
You smear your outer body with ashes, but within, you are filled with darkness.
बाहरि भसम लेपन करे अंतरि गुबारी ॥
ਖਿੰਥਾਝੋਲੀਬਹੁਭੇਖਕਰੇਦੁਰਮਤਿਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ॥
(ਬਾਹਰ) ਗੋਦੜੀ ਤੇ ਝੋਲੀ (ਆਦਿਕ) ਦੇ ਕਈ ਭੇਖ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਭੈੜੀ ਮੱਤ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ (ਇਸ ਭੇਖ ਦਾ) ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ;
You wear the patched coat and all the right clothes and robes, but you are still egotistical and proud.
खिंथा झोली बहु भेख करे दुरमति अहंकारी ॥
ਸਾਹਿਬਸਬਦੁਨਊਚਰੈਮਾਇਆਮੋਹਪਸਾਰੀ॥
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਉਚਾਰਦਾ, (ਨਿਰਾ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦਾ ਖਿਲਾਰਾ ਹੀ (ਬਣਾਈ ਬੈਠਾ) ਹੈ;
You do not chant the Shabad, the Word of Your Lord and Master; you are attached to the expanse of Maya.
साहिब सबदु न ऊचरै माइआ मोह पसारी ॥
ਅੰਤਰਿਲਾਲਚੁਭਰਮੁਹੈਭਰਮੈਗਾਵਾਰੀ॥
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਲਾਲਚ ਹੈ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਹੈ, ਮੂਰਖ ਠੇਡੇ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ;
Within, you are filled with greed and doubt; you wander around like a fool.
अंतरि लालचु भरमु है भरमै गावारी ॥
ਨਾਨਕਨਾਮੁਨਚੇਤਈਜੂਐਬਾਜੀਹਾਰੀ॥੧੪॥
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ, ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਐਸਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ, ਮਾਨੋ) ਜੂਏ ਵਿਚ (ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਦੀ) ਬਾਜ਼ੀ ਹਾਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੪॥
Says Nanak, you never even think of the Naam; you have lost the game of life in the gamble. ||14||
नानक नामु न चेतई जूऐ बाजी हारी ॥१४॥
