ਅਸਟਪਦੀ॥

असटपदी ॥
ਜਾਪਤਾਪਗਿਆਨਸਭਿਧਿਆਨ॥
(ਜੇ ਕੋਈ) (ਵੇਦ-ਮੰਤ੍ਰਾਂ ਦੇ) ਜਾਪ ਕਰੇ, (ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਧੂਣੀਆਂ ਨਾਲ) ਤਪਾਏ, (ਹੋਰ) ਕਈ ਗਿਆਨ (ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਕਰੇ) ਤੇ (ਦੇਵਤਿਆਂ ਦੇ) ਧਿਆਨ ਧਰੇ,
Chanting, intense meditation, spiritual wisdom and all meditations;
जाप ताप गिआन सभि धिआन ॥
ਖਟਸਾਸਤ੍ਰਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿਵਖਿਆਨ॥
ਛੇ ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰਾਂ ਤੇ ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਕਰੇ;
the six schools of philosophy and sermons on the scriptures;
खट सासत्र सिम्रिति वखिआन ॥
ਜੋਗਅਭਿਆਸਕਰਮਧ੍ਰਮਕਿਰਿਆ॥
ਜੋਗ ਦੇ ਸਾਧਨ ਕਰੇ, ਕਰਮ ਕਾਂਡੀ ਧਰਮ ਦੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਆ ਕਰੇ,
the practice of Yoga and righteous conduct;
जोग अभिआस करम ध्रम किरिआ ॥
ਸਗਲਤਿਆਗਿਬਨਮਧੇਫਿਰਿਆ॥
(ਜਾਂ) ਸਾਰੇ (ਕੰਮ) ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਜੰਗਲਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਭਉਂਦਾ ਫਿਰੇ;
the renunciation of everything and wandering around in the wilderness;
सगल तिआगि बन मधे फिरिआ ॥
ਅਨਿਕਪ੍ਰਕਾਰਕੀਏਬਹੁਜਤਨਾ॥
ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਕਿਸਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਬੜੇ ਜਤਨ ਕਰੇ,
the performance of all sorts of works;
अनिक प्रकार कीए बहु जतना ॥
ਪੁੰਨਦਾਨਹੋਮੇਬਹੁਰਤਨਾ॥
ਪੁੰਨਦਾਨ ਕਰੇ ਤੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰਾ ਘਿਉ ਹਵਨ ਕਰੇ,
donations to charities and offerings of jewels to fire;
पुंन दान होमे बहु रतना ॥
ਸਰੀਰੁਕਟਾਇਹੋਮੈਕਰਿਰਾਤੀ॥
ਆਪਣੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਰਤੀ ਰਤੀ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਕਟਾਵੇ ਤੇ ਅੱਗ ਵਿਚ ਸਾੜ ਦੇਵੇ,
cutting the body apart and making the pieces into ceremonial fire offerings;
सरीरु कटाइ होमै करि राती ॥
ਵਰਤਨੇਮਕਰੈਬਹੁਭਾਤੀ॥
ਕਈ ਕਿਸਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਵਰਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਬੰਧੇਜ ਕਰੇ;
keeping fasts and making vows of all sorts
वरत नेम करै बहु भाती ॥
ਨਹੀਤੁਲਿਰਾਮਨਾਮਬੀਚਾਰ॥
(ਪਰ ਇਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਹੀ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਦੇ ਬਰਾਬਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਨ,
- none of these are equal to the contemplation of the Name of the Lord,
नही तुलि राम नाम बीचार ॥
ਨਾਨਕਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਨਾਮੁਜਪੀਐਇਕਬਾਰ॥੧॥
(ਭਾਵੇਂ) ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਇਹ ਨਾਮ ਇਕ ਵਾਰੀ (ਭੀ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਜਪਿਆ ਜਾਏ ॥੧॥
O Nanak, if, as Gurmukh, one chants the Naam, even once. ||1||
नानक गुरमुखि नामु जपीऐ इक बार ॥१॥
