ਤੀਰਥਿਨਾਈਐਸੁਖੁਫਲੁਪਾਈਐਮੈਲੁਨਲਾਗੈਕਾਈ॥
ਤੀਰਥ ਤੇ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ; ਇਸ ਦਾ ਫਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ 'ਸੁਖ', ਤੇ (ਮਨ ਨੂੰ) ਕੋਈ ਮੈਲ (ਭੀ) ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗਦੀ।
We bathe at sacred shrines of pilgrimage, and obtain the fruits of peace; not even an iota of filth sticks to us.
ਗੋਰਖਪੂਤੁਲੋਹਾਰੀਪਾਬੋਲੈਜੋਗਜੁਗਤਿਬਿਧਿਸਾਈ॥੭॥
ਗੋਰਖਨਾਥ ਦਾ ਚੇਲਾ ਲੋਹਾਰੀਪਾ ਬੋਲਿਆ ਕਿ ਇਹੀ ਹੈ ਜੋਗ ਦੀ ਜੁਗਤੀ, ਜੋਗ ਦੀ ਵਿਧੀ ॥੭॥
Luhaareepaa, the disciple of Gorakh says, this is the Way of Yoga." ||7||
ਹਾਟੀਬਾਟੀਨੀਦਨਆਵੈਪਰਘਰਿਚਿਤੁਨਡੋੁਲਾਈ॥
(ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਦਾ ਕਥਨ) ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਅਸਲ (ਗਿਆਨ ਦੀ) ਵਿਚਾਰ ਇਹ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਧੰਧਿਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿੰਦਿਆਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਨੀਂਦ ਨਾਹ ਆਵੇ (ਭਾਵ, ਧੰਧਿਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਨਾਹ ਗ਼ਰਕ ਹੋ ਜਾਏ), ਪਰਾਏ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਡੋਲਣ ਨਾਹ ਦੇਵੇ;
In the stores and on the road, do not sleep; do not let your consciousness covet anyone else's home.
ਬਿਨੁਨਾਵੈਮਨੁਟੇਕਨਟਿਕਈਨਾਨਕਭੂਖਨਜਾਈ॥
(ਪਰ) ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮਨ ਟਿਕ ਕੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿ ਸਕਦਾ ਤੇ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ) ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਹਟਦੀ ਨਹੀਂ।
Without the Name, the mind has no firm support; O Nanak, this hunger never departs.
ਹਾਟੁਪਟਣੁਘਰੁਗੁਰੂਦਿਖਾਇਆਸਹਜੇਸਚੁਵਾਪਾਰੋ॥
(ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ) ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ (ਨਾਮ ਵਿਹਾਝਣ ਦਾ ਅਸਲ) ਟਿਕਾਣਾ, ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਤੇ ਘਰ ਵਿਖਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ (ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਧੰਧਿਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਭੀ) ਅਡੋਲ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ 'ਨਾਮ' ਵਿਹਾਝਦਾ ਹੈ।
The Guru has revealed the stores and the city within the home of my own heart, where I intuitively carry on the true trade.
ਖੰਡਿਤਨਿਦ੍ਰਾਅਲਪਅਹਾਰੰਨਾਨਕਤਤੁਬੀਚਾਰੋ॥੮॥
ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਨੀਂਦ ਭੀ ਘੱਟ ਤੇ ਖ਼ੁਰਾਕ ਭੀ ਥੋੜ੍ਹੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ। (ਭਾਵ, ਉਹ ਚਸਕਿਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦਾ) ॥੮॥
Sleep little, and eat little; O Nanak, this is the essence of wisdom. ||8||
ਦਰਸਨੁਭੇਖਕਰਹੁਜੋਗਿੰਦ੍ਰਾਮੁੰਦ੍ਰਾਝੋਲੀਖਿੰਥਾ॥
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ (ਕਿ ਜੋਗੀ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ- ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ!) ਜੋਗੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਮਤ ਸ੍ਵੀਕਾਰ ਕਰੋ, ਮੁੰਦ੍ਰਾ, ਝੋਲੀ ਤੇ ਗੋਦੜੀ ਪਹਿਨੋ।
"Wear the robes of the sect of Yogis who follow Gorakh; put on the ear-rings, begging wallet and patched coat.
ਬਾਰਹਅੰਤਰਿਏਕੁਸਰੇਵਹੁਖਟੁਦਰਸਨਇਕਪੰਥਾ॥
ਛੇ ਭੇਖਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਇਕ ਜੋਗੀ ਪੰਥ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਬਾਰਾਂ ਫ਼ਿਰਕੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਸਾਡੇ 'ਆਈ ਪੰਥ' ਨੂੰ ਧਾਰਨ ਕਰੋ।
Among the twelve schools of Yoga, ours is the highest; among the six schools of philosophy, ours is the best path.
ਇਨਬਿਧਿਮਨੁਸਮਝਾਈਐਪੁਰਖਾਬਾਹੁੜਿਚੋਟਨਖਾਈਐ॥
ਹੇ ਪੁਰਖਾ! ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਅਕਲ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਮੁੜ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ) ਚੋਟ ਨਹੀਂ ਖਾਈਦੀ।
This is the way to instruct the mind, so you will never suffer beatings again."
ਨਾਨਕੁਬੋਲੈਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਬੂਝੈਜੋਗਜੁਗਤਿਇਵਪਾਈਐ॥੯॥
(ਉੱਤਰ:) ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੋਇਆਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਾਣ ਦਾ ਢੰਗ) ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜੋਗ ਦੀ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਲੱਭਦੀ ਹੈ (ਕਿ) ॥੯॥
Nanak speaks: the Gurmukh understands; this is the way that Yoga is attained. ||9||
ਅੰਤਰਿਸਬਦੁਨਿਰੰਤਰਿਮੁਦ੍ਰਾਹਉਮੈਮਮਤਾਦੂਰਿਕਰੀ॥
ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ-ਰਸ ਵਸਾਣਾ-ਇਹ (ਕੰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਮੁੰਦ੍ਰਾਂ (ਪਾਉਣੀਆਂ) ਹਨ, (ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰ-ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਵਸਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ) ਆਪਣੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਅਤੇ ਮਮਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ;
Let constant absorption in the Word of the Shabad deep within be your ear-rings; eradicate egotism and attachment.
ਕਾਮੁਕ੍ਰੋਧੁਅਹੰਕਾਰੁਨਿਵਾਰੈਗੁਰਕੈਸਬਦਿਸੁਸਮਝਪਰੀ॥
ਕਾਮ, ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਅਤੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਟਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਸੂਝ ਪੈ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
Discard sexual desire, anger and egotism, and through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, attain true understanding.
ਖਿੰਥਾਝੋਲੀਭਰਿਪੁਰਿਰਹਿਆਨਾਨਕਤਾਰੈਏਕੁਹਰੀ॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਸਭ ਥਾਈਂ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਸਮਝਣਾ ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਗੋਦੜੀ ਤੇ ਝੋਲੀ ਹੈ।
For your patched coat and begging bowl, see the Lord God pervading and permeating everywhere; O Nanak, the One Lord will carry you across.
ਸਾਚਾਸਾਹਿਬੁਸਾਚੀਨਾਈਪਰਖੈਗੁਰਕੀਬਾਤਖਰੀ॥੧੦॥
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸੱਚੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਹ ਨਿਰਨਾ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹੀ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਚੋਟ ਤੋਂ) ਬਚਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਭੀ ਸਦਾ ਟਿਕੀ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਹੈ ॥੧੦॥
True is our Lord and Master, and True is His Name. Analyze it, and you shall find the Word of the Guru to be True. ||10||
ਊਂਧਉਖਪਰੁਪੰਚਭੂਟੋਪੀ॥
ਸੰਸਾਰਕ ਖ਼ਾਹਸ਼ਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ ਮੁੜੀ ਹੋਈ ਸੁਰਤ ਉਸ (ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਦਾ ਖੱਪਰ ਹੈ, ਪੰਜ ਤੱਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਦੈਵੀ ਗੁਣ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਟੋਪੀ ਹੈ,
Let your mind turn away in detachment from the world, and let this be your begging bowl. Let the lessons of the five elements be your cap.
ਕਾਂਇਆਕੜਾਸਣੁਮਨੁਜਾਗੋਟੀ॥
ਸਰੀਰ (ਨੂੰ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਰੱਖਣਾ) ਉਸ ਦਾ ਦੱਭ ਦਾ ਆਸਣ ਹੈ, (ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਆਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ) ਮਨ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਲੰਗੋਟੀ ਹੈ,
Let the body be your meditation mat, and the mind your loin cloth.
ਸਤੁਸੰਤੋਖੁਸੰਜਮੁਹੈਨਾਲਿ॥
ਸਤ ਸੰਤੋਖ ਤੇ ਸੰਜਮ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ (ਤਿੰਨ ਚੇਲੇ) ਹਨ
Let truth, contentment and self-discipline be your companions.
ਨਾਨਕਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਨਾਮੁਸਮਾਲਿ॥੧੧॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ) ਨਾਮ ਯਾਦ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੧॥
O Nanak, the Gurmukh dwells on the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||11||
ਕਵਨੁਸੁਗੁਪਤਾਕਵਨੁਸੁਮੁਕਤਾ॥
(ਪ੍ਰਸ਼ਨ:) ਲੁਕਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਕੌਣ ਹੈ? ਉਹ ਕੌਣ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਮੁਕਤ ਹੈ?
"Who is hidden? Who is liberated?
ਕਵਨੁਸੁਅੰਤਰਿਬਾਹਰਿਜੁਗਤਾ॥
ਉਹ ਕੌਣ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਬਾਹਰੋਂ (ਭਾਵ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਭੀ ਤੇ ਸਰੀਰਕ ਇੰਦ੍ਰੇ ਭੀ ਮਿਲੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ) ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ?
Who is united, inwardly and outwardly?
ਕਵਨੁਸੁਆਵੈਕਵਨੁਸੁਜਾਇ॥
(ਸਦਾ) ਜੰਮਦਾ ਮਰਦਾ ਕੌਣ ਹੈ?
Who comes, and who goes?
ਕਵਨੁਸੁਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣਿਰਹਿਆਸਮਾਇ॥੧੨॥
ਤ੍ਰਿਲੋਕੀ ਦੇ ਨਾਥ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਕੌਣ ਹੈ? ॥੧੨॥
Who is permeating and pervading the three worlds?" ||12||
ਘਟਿਘਟਿਗੁਪਤਾਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਮੁਕਤਾ॥
(ਉੱਤਰ:) ਜੋ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ) ਹਰੇਕ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਗੁਪਤ ਹੈ; ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦੱਸੇ ਰਾਹ ਤੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਬੰਧਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਮੁਕਤ ਹੈ।
He is hidden within each and every heart. The Gurmukh is liberated.
ਅੰਤਰਿਬਾਹਰਿਸਬਦਿਸੁਜੁਗਤਾ॥
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰ-ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਿਆ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਮਨ ਤੇ ਤਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ) ਜੁੜਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
Through the Word of the Shabad, one is united, inwardly and outwardly.
ਮਨਮੁਖਿਬਿਨਸੈਆਵੈਜਾਇ॥
ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜੰਮਦਾ ਮਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
The self-willed manmukh perishes, and comes and goes.
ਨਾਨਕਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਸਾਚਿਸਮਾਇ॥੧੩॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸੱਚੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੩॥
O Nanak, the Gurmukh merges in Truth. ||13||
ਕਿਉਕਰਿਬਾਧਾਸਰਪਨਿਖਾਧਾ॥
(ਪ੍ਰਸ਼ਨ:) (ਇਹ ਜੀਵ) ਕਿਵੇਂ (ਐਸਾ) ਬੱਝਾ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਸਪਣੀ (ਮਾਇਆ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ) ਖਾਈ ਜਾ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ (ਤੇ ਇਹ ਅੱਗੋਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਬਚਾ ਲਈ ਭੱਜ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ)?
"How is one placed in bondage, and consumed by the serpent of Maya?
ਕਿਉਕਰਿਖੋਇਆਕਿਉਕਰਿਲਾਧਾ॥
(ਇਸ ਜੀਵ ਨੇ) ਕਿਵੇਂ (ਆਪਣੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਲਾਭ) ਗੰਵਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ? ਕਿਵੇਂ (ਮੁੜ ਉਹ ਲਾਹਾ) ਲੱਭ ਸਕੇ?
How does one lose, and how does one gain?
ਕਿਉਕਰਿਨਿਰਮਲੁਕਿਉਕਰਿਅੰਧਿਆਰਾ॥
(ਇਹ ਜੀਵ) ਕਿਵੇਂ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੋ ਸਕੇ? ਕਿਵੇਂ (ਇਸ ਦੇ ਅੱਗੇ) ਹਨੇਰਾ (ਟਿਕਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ) ਹੈ?
How does one become immaculate and pure? How is the darkness of ignorance removed?
ਇਹੁਤਤੁਬੀਚਾਰੈਸੁਗੁਰੂਹਮਾਰਾ॥੧੪॥
ਜੋ ਇਸ ਅਸਲੀਅਤ ਨੂੰ (ਠੀਕ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਵਿਚਾਰੇ, ਸਾਡੀ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਨਮਸਕਾਰ ਹੈ ॥੧੪॥
One who understands this essence of reality is our Guru." ||14||
ਦੁਰਮਤਿਬਾਧਾਸਰਪਨਿਖਾਧਾ॥
(ਉੱਤਰ:) (ਇਹ ਜੀਵ) ਭੈੜੀ ਮੱਤ ਵਿਚ (ਇਉਂ) ਬੱਝਾ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਸਪਣੀ (ਮਾਇਆ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ) ਖਾਈ ਜਾ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ (ਤੇ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਚਸਕਿਆਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਨਿਕਲਣ ਨੂੰ ਜੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ);
Man is bound by evil-mindedness, and consumed by Maya, the serpent.
ਮਨਮੁਖਿਖੋਇਆਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਲਾਧਾ॥
ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਲੱਗਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਨੇ (ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਲਾਹਾ) ਗਵਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ, ਤੇ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਨੇ ਖੱਟ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ।
The self-willed manmukh loses, and the Gurmukh gains.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਮਿਲੈਅੰਧੇਰਾਜਾਇ॥
(ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਚਸਕਿਆਂ ਦਾ) ਹਨੇਰਾ ਤਾਂ ਹੀ ਦੂਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲ ਪਏ (ਭਾਵ, ਜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦੱਸੇ ਰਸਤੇ ਉਤੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਲੱਗ ਪਏ)।
Meeting the True Guru, darkness is dispelled.
ਨਾਨਕਹਉਮੈਮੇਟਿਸਮਾਇ॥੧੫॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਹਉਮੈ ਮਿਟਾ ਕੇ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੫॥
O Nanak, eradicating egotism, one merges in the Lord. ||15||
ਸੁੰਨਨਿਰੰਤਰਿਦੀਜੈਬੰਧੁ॥
(ਜੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਹੱਲਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਰਾਹ ਵਿਚ) ਇਕ-ਰਸ ਅਫੁਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਦੀ ਯਾਦ) ਦਾ ਇਕ ਅਤੁੱਟ ਬੰਨਾ ਬਣਾ ਦੇਈਏ,
Focused deep within, in perfect absorption,
ਉਡੈਨਹੰਸਾਪੜੈਨਕੰਧੁ॥
(ਤਾਂ ਫਿਰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ) ਮਨ ਭਟਕਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ, ਤੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਭੀ ਛਿੱਜਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ (ਭਾਵ, ਸਰੀਰ ਦੀ ਸੱਤਿਆ ਨਾਸ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ)।
the soul-swan does not fly away, and the body-wall does not collapse.
ਸਹਜਗੁਫਾਘਰੁਜਾਣੈਸਾਚਾ॥
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਹਜ-ਅਵਸਥਾ ਦੀ ਗੁਫ਼ਾ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਸਦਾ ਟਿਕੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਦਾ ਘਰ ਸਮਝ ਲਏ (ਭਾਵ, ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਸਦਾ ਅਡੋਲ ਰਹੇ),
Then, one knows that his true home is in the cave of intuitive poise.
ਨਾਨਕਸਾਚੇਭਾਵੈਸਾਚਾ॥੧੬॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਲੱਗਣ ਲਗ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੬॥
O Nanak, the True Lord loves those who are truthful. ||16||
ਕਿਸੁਕਾਰਣਿਗ੍ਰਿਹੁਤਜਿਓਉਦਾਸੀ॥
(ਪ੍ਰਸ਼ਨ:) (ਜੇ 'ਹਾਟੀ ਬਾਟੀ' ਨੂੰ ਤਿਆਗਣਾ ਨਹੀਂ, ਤਾਂ) ਤੁਸਾਂ ਕਿਉਂ ਘਰ ਛੱਡਿਆ ਸੀ ਤੇ 'ਉਦਾਸੀ' ਬਣੇ ਸੀ?
"Why have you left your house and become a wandering Udaasee?
ਕਿਸੁਕਾਰਣਿਇਹੁਭੇਖੁਨਿਵਾਸੀ॥
ਕਿਉਂ ਇਹ (ਉਦਾਸੀ-) ਭੇਖ ਧਾਰਿਆ ਸੀ?
Why have you adopted these religious robes?
ਕਿਸੁਵਖਰਕੇਤੁਮਵਣਜਾਰੇ॥
ਤੁਸੀ ਕਿਸ ਸੌਦੇ ਦੇ ਵਪਾਰੀ ਹੋ?
What merchandise do you trade?
ਕਿਉਕਰਿਸਾਥੁਲੰਘਾਵਹੁਪਾਰੇ॥੧੭॥
(ਆਪਣੇ ਸ਼ਰਧਾਲੂਆਂ ਦੀ) ਜਮਾਤ ਨੂੰ (ਇਸ 'ਦੁਤਰ ਸਾਗਰ' ਕਿਵੇਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾਵੋਗੇ? (ਭਾਵ, ਆਪਣੇ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਣ ਲਈ ਤੁਸਾਂ ਕੇਹੜਾ ਰਾਹ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਹੈ)? ॥੧੭॥
How will you carry others across with you?" ||17||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਖੋਜਤਭਏਉਦਾਸੀ॥
(ਉੱਤਰ:) ਅਸੀਂ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਲੱਭਣ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਉਦਾਸੀ ਬਣੇ ਸਾਂ,
I became a wandering Udaasee, searching for the Gurmukhs.
ਦਰਸਨਕੈਤਾਈਭੇਖਨਿਵਾਸੀ॥
ਅਸਾਂ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਦਰਸ਼ਨਾਂ ਲਈ (ਉਦਾਸੀ-) ਭੇਖ ਧਾਰਿਆ ਸੀ।
I have adopted these robes seeking the Blessed Vision of the Lord's Darshan.
ਸਾਚਵਖਰਕੇਹਮਵਣਜਾਰੇ॥
ਅਸੀਂ ਸੱਚੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ-ਸੌਦੇ ਦੇ ਵਪਾਰੀ ਹਾਂ।
I trade in the merchandise of Truth.
ਨਾਨਕਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਉਤਰਸਿਪਾਰੇ॥੧੮॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦੱਸੇ ਰਾਹ ਤੇ ਤੁਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ('ਦੁਤਰ ਸਾਗਰ' ਤੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੮॥
O Nanak, as Gurmukh, I carry others across. ||18||
ਕਿਤੁਬਿਧਿਪੁਰਖਾਜਨਮੁਵਟਾਇਆ॥
(ਪ੍ਰਸ਼ਨ:) ਹੇ ਪੁਰਖਾ! ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਕਿਸ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਨਾਲ ਪਲਟ ਲਈ ਹੈ?
"How have you changed the course of your life?
ਕਾਹੇਕਉਤੁਝੁਇਹੁਮਨੁਲਾਇਆ॥
ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਇਹ ਮਨ ਕਿਸ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜਿਆ ਹੈ?
