ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਸੇਵੇਆਪਣਾਸੋਸਿਰੁਲੇਖੈਲਾਇ॥
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣਾ ਸਿਰ (ਭਾਵ, ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ) ਸਫਲਾ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
Those who serve their True Guru are certified and accepted.
ਵਿਚਹੁਆਪੁਗਵਾਇਕੈਰਹਨਿਸਚਿਲਿਵਲਾਇ॥
ਅਜੇਹੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਸੱਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਬਿਰਤੀ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ।
They eradicate selfishness and conceit from within; they remain lovingly absorbed in the True One.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਜਿਨੀਨਸੇਵਿਓਤਿਨਾਬਿਰਥਾਜਨਮੁਗਵਾਇ॥
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤੀ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਗਵਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ।
Those who do not serve the True Guru waste away their lives in vain.
ਨਾਨਕਜੋਤਿਸੁਭਾਵੈਸੋਕਰੇਕਹਣਾਕਿਛੂਨਜਾਇ॥੧॥
(ਪਰ) ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ) ਕੁਝ (ਚੰਗਾ ਮੰਦਾ) ਆਖਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਜੋ ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
O Nanak, the Lord does just as He pleases. No one has any say in this. ||1||

Third Mahalaa:
ਮਨੁਵੇਕਾਰੀਵੇੜਿਆਵੇਕਾਰਾਕਰਮਕਮਾਇ॥
(ਇਹ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਦਾ ਤਰੀਕਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਮਨ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਕਰਮ (ਹੀ) ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
With the mind encircled by wickedness and evil, people do evil deeds.
ਦੂਜੈਭਾਇਅਗਿਆਨੀਪੂਜਦੇਦਰਗਹਮਿਲੈਸਜਾਇ॥
(ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ (ਫਸੇ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ) ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪੂਜਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਇਸ ਪੂਜਾ ਦਾ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕੁਝ ਲਾਭ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ) ਦਰਗਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਸਜ਼ਾ (ਹੀ) ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ।
The ignorant worship the love of duality; in the Lord's Court they shall be punished.
ਆਤਮਦੇਉਪੂਜੀਐਬਿਨੁਸਤਿਗੁਰਬੂਝਨਪਾਇ॥
ਆਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਚਾਨਣ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਹੀ ਪੂਜਾ ਕਰਨੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ, (ਪਰ) ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਸਮਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦੀ।
So worship the Lord, the Light of the soul; without the True Guru, understanding is not obtained.
ਜਪੁਤਪੁਸੰਜਮੁਭਾਣਾਸਤਿਗੁਰੂਕਾਕਰਮੀਪਲੈਪਾਇ॥
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਭਾਣਾ (ਮੰਨਣਾ)-ਇਹੀ ਜਪੁ ਤਪੁ ਤੇ ਸੰਜਮ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰੇ ਤਾਂ ਇਹ (ਭਾਣਾ ਮੰਨਣ ਦੀ ਸਮਰੱਥਾ) ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
Meditation, penance and austere self-discipline are found by surrendering to the True Guru's Will. By His Grace this is received.
ਨਾਨਕਸੇਵਾਸੁਰਤਿਕਮਾਵਣੀਜੋਹਰਿਭਾਵੈਸੋਥਾਇਪਾਇ॥੨॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਉਂਞ ਤਾਂ) ਜੋ ਸੇਵਾ ਹਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗੀ ਲੱਗੇ ਉਹੀ ਪਰਵਾਨ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, (ਪਰ) ਸੇਵਾ ਭੀ ਸੁਰਤ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਹੀ (ਭਾਵ, ਸੁਰਤ ਨੂੰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਭਾਣੇ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾ ਕੇ ਹੀ) ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
O Nanak, serve with this intuitive awareness; only that which is pleasing to the Lord is approved. ||2||

ਹਰਿਹਰਿਨਾਮੁਜਪਹੁਮਨਮੇਰੇਜਿਤੁਸਦਾਸੁਖੁਹੋਵੈਦਿਨੁਰਾਤੀ॥
ਹੇ ਮਰੇ ਮਨ! ਹਰੀ-ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰ, ਜਿਸ ਤੋਂ ਰਾਤ ਦਿਨ ਸਦਾ ਦੁਖ ਹੋਵੇ।
Chant the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, O my mind; it will bring you eternal peace, day and night.
ਹਰਿਹਰਿਨਾਮੁਜਪਹੁਮਨਮੇਰੇਜਿਤੁਸਿਮਰਤਸਭਿਕਿਲਵਿਖਪਾਪਲਹਾਤੀ॥
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਹਰੀ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਕੇ ਸਭ ਪਾਪ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
Chant the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, O my mind; meditating on it, all sins and misdeeds shall be erased.
ਹਰਿਹਰਿਨਾਮੁਜਪਹੁਮਨਮੇਰੇਜਿਤੁਦਾਲਦੁਦੁਖਭੁਖਸਭਲਹਿਜਾਤੀ॥
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਹਰੀ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰ, ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਸਭ ਦਰਿਦ੍ਰ ਦੁੱਖ ਤੇ ਭੁੱਖਾਂ ਲਹਿ ਜਾਣ।
Chant the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, O my mind; through it, all poverty, pain and hunger shall be removed.
ਹਰਿਹਰਿਨਾਮੁਜਪਹੁਮਨਮੇਰੇਮੁਖਿਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਪ੍ਰੀਤਿਲਗਾਤੀ॥
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਹਰੀ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰ, (ਜਿਸ ਕਰਕੇ) ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ (ਤੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਉੱਤਮ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ (ਭਾਵ, ਹਰੀ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ) ਬਣ ਜਾਏ।
Chant the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, O my mind; as Gurmukh, declare your love.
ਜਿਤੁਮੁਖਿਭਾਗੁਲਿਖਿਆਧੁਰਿਸਾਚੈਹਰਿਤਿਤੁਮੁਖਿਨਾਮੁਜਪਾਤੀ॥੧੩॥
ਧੁਰ ਸੱਚੀ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਤੋਂ ਜਿਸ ਮੂੰਹ ਤੇ ਭਾਗ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੋਵੇ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਉਸ ਮੂੰਹ ਤੋਂ (ਹੀ) ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੩॥
One who has such pre-ordained destiny inscribed upon his forehead by the True Lord, chants the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||13||

Shalok, Third Mahalaa:
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਜਿਨੀਨਸੇਵਿਓਸਬਦਿਨਕੀਤੋਵੀਚਾਰੁ॥
(ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਲੱਭ ਕੇ) ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤੀ ਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਹਰੀ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ) ਵਿਚਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤੀ,
Those who do not serve the True Guru, and who do not contemplate the Word of the Shabad
ਅੰਤਰਿਗਿਆਨੁਨਆਇਓਮਿਰਤਕੁਹੈਸੰਸਾਰਿ॥
(ਤੇ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਸੱਚਾ ਚਾਨਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਇਆ, ਉਹ ਜੀਵ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਚ (ਜੀਊਂਦਾ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਭੀ) ਮੋਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
-spiritual wisdom does not enter into their hearts; they are like dead bodies in the world.
ਲਖਚਉਰਾਸੀਹਫੇਰੁਪਇਆਮਰਿਜੰਮੈਹੋਇਖੁਆਰੁ॥
(ਚੌਰਾਸੀ ਲੱਖ ਜੂਨਾਂ) ਵਿਚ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਚੱਕਰ ਕੱਟਣਾ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਜੰਮਦਾ ਮਰਦਾ ਤੇ ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
They go through the cycle of 8.4 million reincarnations, and they are ruined through death and rebirth.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਕੀਸੇਵਾਸੋਕਰੇਜਿਸਨੋਆਪਿਕਰਾਏਸੋਇ॥
ਜਿਸ ਜੀਵ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਕਰਾਏ, ਉਹੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ।
He alone serves the True Guru, whom the Lord Himself inspires to do so.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਵਿਚਿਨਾਮੁਨਿਧਾਨੁਹੈਕਰਮਿਪਰਾਪਤਿਹੋਇ॥
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਪਾਸ 'ਨਾਮ' ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
The Treasure of the Naam is within the True Guru; by His Grace, it is obtained.
ਸਚਿਰਤੇਗੁਰਸਬਦਸਿਉਤਿਨਸਚੀਸਦਾਲਿਵਹੋਇ॥
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਸੱਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਬਿਰਤੀ ਸਦਾ ਇਕ ਤਾਰ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
Those who are truly attuned to the Word of the Guru's Shabad-their love is forever True.
ਨਾਨਕਜਿਸਨੋਮੇਲੇਨਵਿਛੁੜੈਸਹਜਿਸਮਾਵੈਸੋਇ॥੧॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ (ਇਕ ਵਾਰੀ) ਮੇਲ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ (ਕਦੇ) ਵਿਛੁੜਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ, ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਅਡੋਲ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
O Nanak, those who are united with Him shall not be separated again. They merge imperceptibly into God. ||1||

ਸੋਭਗਉਤੀਜੋੁਭਗਵੰਤੈਜਾਣੈ॥
ਭਗਉਤੀ (ਸੱਚਾ ਭਗਤ) ਉਹ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ),
One who knows the Benevolent Lord God is the true devotee of Bhagaautee.
ਗੁਰਪਰਸਾਦੀਆਪੁਪਛਾਣੈ॥
ਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ (ਭਾਵ, ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਲੈ ਕੇ) ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ।
By Guru's Grace, he is self-realized.
ਧਾਵਤੁਰਾਖੈਇਕਤੁਘਰਿਆਣੈ॥
(ਵਾਸ਼ਨਾ ਵਲ) ਦੌੜਦੇ (ਮਨ) ਨੂੰ ਸਾਂਭ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਇੱਕ ਟਿਕਾਣੇ ਤੇ ਲਿਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
He restrains his wandering mind, and brings it back to its own home within the self.
ਜੀਵਤੁਮਰੈਹਰਿਨਾਮੁਵਖਾਣੈ॥
ਅਤੇ ਜੀਊਂਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੀ (ਮਾਇਆ ਵਲੋਂ) ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਚਰਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੀ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਵਾਸ਼ਨਾ ਵਲੋਂ ਤੋੜੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ) ਹਰੀ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦਾ ਹੈ।
He remains dead while yet alive, and he chants the Name of the Lord.
ਐਸਾਭਗਉਤੀਉਤਮੁਹੋਇ॥
ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਭਗਉਤੀ (ਭਗਤ) ਉੱਤਮ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
Such a Bhagaautee is most exalted.
ਨਾਨਕਸਚਿਸਮਾਵੈਸੋਇ॥੨॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਤੇ ਫਿਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਵਿੱਛੁੜਦਾ ॥੨॥
O Nanak, he merges into the True One. ||2||
ਮਃ੩॥
Third Mahalaa:
ਅੰਤਰਿਕਪਟੁਭਗਉਤੀਕਹਾਏ॥
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਖੋਟ ਰੱਖੇ (ਪਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ) ਭਗਉਤੀ (ਸੱਚਾ ਭਗਤ) ਅਖਵਾਏ,
He is full of deceit, and yet he calls himself a devotee of Bhagaautee.
ਪਾਖੰਡਿਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁਕਦੇਨਪਾਏ॥
ਉਹ (ਇਸ) ਪਖੰਡ ਨਾਲ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲ ਸਕਦਾ।
Through hypocrisy, he shall never attain the Supreme Lord God.
ਪਰਨਿੰਦਾਕਰੇਅੰਤਰਿਮਲੁਲਾਏ॥
(ਜੀਵ) ਪਰਾਈ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਮੈਲ ਲਾਈ ਜਾਵੇ,
He slanders others, and pollutes himself with his own filth.
ਬਾਹਰਿਮਲੁਧੋਵੈਮਨਕੀਜੂਠਿਨਜਾਏ॥
(ਤੇ) ਬਾਹਰੋਂ (ਸਰੀਰ ਦੀ) ਮੈਲ (ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਆਦਿਕ ਨਾਲ) ਧੋਂਦਾ ਰਹੇ, (ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਮਨ ਦੀ ਜੂਠ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ।
Outwardly, he washes off the filth, but the impurity of his mind does not go away.
ਸਤਿਸੰਗਤਿਸਿਉਬਾਦੁਰਚਾਏ॥
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਤ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਝਗੜਾ ਪਾਈ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਭਾਵ, ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਤ ਸੰਗ ਨਹੀਂ ਭਾਉਂਦਾ)
He argues with the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation.
ਅਨਦਿਨੁਦੁਖੀਆਦੂਜੈਭਾਇਰਚਾਏ॥
ਉਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਸਦਾ ਦੁਖੀ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
Night and day, he suffers, engrossed in the love of duality.
ਹਰਿਨਾਮੁਨਚੇਤੈਬਹੁਕਰਮਕਮਾਏ॥
ਹਰੀ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਹੋਰ ਬਥੇਰੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਾਂਡ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹੇ.
He does not remember the Name of the Lord, but still, he performs all sorts of empty rituals.
ਪੂਰਬਲਿਖਿਆਸੁਮੇਟਣਾਨਜਾਏ॥
(ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਪਹਿਲਾਂ (ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਚੰਗੇ ਮੰਦੇ ਸੰਸਕਾਰ ਜੋ ਮਨ ਤੇ) ਲਿਖੇ ਗਏ (ਹਨ, ਤੇ ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਵਿਚ ਭਵਾਉਂਦੇ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਹਨ) ਮਿਟ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦੇ।
That which is pre-ordained cannot be erased.
ਨਾਨਕਬਿਨੁਸਤਿਗੁਰਸੇਵੇਮੋਖੁਨਪਾਏ॥੩॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਸੱਚ ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਤੋਂ) ਛੁਟਕਾਰਾ ਹੋ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ ॥੩॥
O Nanak, without serving the True Guru, liberation is not obtained. ||3||
ਪਉੜੀ॥
Pauree:
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਜਿਨੀਧਿਆਇਆਸੇਕੜਿਨਸਵਾਹੀ॥
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਧਿਆਨ ਧਰਿਆ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਨਿੱਤ ਨਵੇਂ ਸੂਰਜ ਦੁਖੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੇ,
Those who meditate on the True Guru shall not be burnt to ashes.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਜਿਨੀਧਿਆਇਆਸੇਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿਅਘਾਹੀ॥
(ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਧਿਆਨ ਧਰਿਆ ਹੈ ਉਹ (ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ) ਪੂਰਨ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਰੱਜੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
Those who meditate on the True Guru are satisfied and fulfilled.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਜਿਨੀਧਿਆਇਆਤਿਨਜਮਡਰੁਨਾਹੀ॥
