ਵਿਣੁਨਾਵੈਸਭਿਭਰਮਦੇਨਿਤਜਗਿਤੋਟਾਸੈਸਾਰਿ॥
ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਸਾਰੇ ਲੋਕ ਭਟਕਦੇ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਹਨ; ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ ਘਾਟਾ ਹੀ ਘਾਟਾ ਹੈ;
Without the Name of the Lord, everyone wanders around the world, losing.
ਮਨਮੁਖਿਕਰਮਕਮਾਵਣੇਹਉਮੈਅੰਧੁਗੁਬਾਰੁ॥
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਤਾਂ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੇ ਆਸਰੇ ਉਹ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਘੁੱਪ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
The self-willed manmukhs do their deeds in the pitch black darkness of egotism.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁਪੀਵਣਾਨਾਨਕਸਬਦੁਵੀਚਾਰਿ॥੧॥
ਪਰ ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਜੀਵ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ-ਜਲ ਪੀਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧॥
The Gurmukhs drink in the Ambrosial Nectar, O Nanak, contemplating the Word of the Shabad. ||1||

Third Mahalaa:
ਸਹਜੇਜਾਗੈਸਹਜੇਸੋਵੈ॥
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਜਾਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਸੌਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਜਾਗਦਿਆਂ ਹਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਤੇ ਸੁੱਤਿਆਂ ਹਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।)
He wakes in peace, and he sleeps in peace.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਅਨਦਿਨੁਉਸਤਤਿਹੋਵੈ॥
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਹਰ ਰੋਜ਼ (ਭਾਵ, ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ) ਹਰੀ ਦੀ ਉਸਤਤਿ (ਦਾ ਹੀ ਆਹਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ) ਹੈ।
The Gurmukh praises the Lord night and day.
ਮਨਮੁਖਭਰਮੈਸਹਸਾਹੋਵੈ॥
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਭਟਕਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਤੌਖ਼ਲਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ;
The self-willed manmukh remains deluded by his doubts.
ਅੰਤਰਿਚਿੰਤਾਨੀਦਨਸੋਵੈ॥
ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਹੋਣ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਉਹ (ਸੁਖ ਦੀ) ਨੀਂਦਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੌਂਦਾ।
He is filled with anxiety, and he cannot even sleep.
ਗਿਆਨੀਜਾਗਹਿਸਵਹਿਸੁਭਾਇ॥
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਰੱਖਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਜਾਗਦੇ ਸੌਂਦੇ ਹਨ (ਭਾਵ, ਜਾਗਦੇ ਤੇ ਸੁੱਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਇਕ-ਰਸ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ)।
The spiritually wise wake and sleep in peace.
ਨਾਨਕਨਾਮਿਰਤਿਆਬਲਿਜਾਉ॥੨॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਮੈਂ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਹੋਇਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਕੇ ਹਾਂ ॥੨॥
Nanak is a sacrifice to those who are imbued with the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||2||
ਪਉੜੀ॥
Pauree:
ਸੇਹਰਿਨਾਮੁਧਿਆਵਹਿਜੋਹਰਿਰਤਿਆ॥
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
They alone meditate on the Lord's Name, who are imbued with the Lord.
ਹਰਿਇਕੁਧਿਆਵਹਿਇਕੁਇਕੋਹਰਿਸਤਿਆ॥
ਉਸ ਇੱਕ ਹਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਧਿਆਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜੋ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ;
They meditate on the One Lord; the One and Only Lord is True.
ਹਰਿਇਕੋਵਰਤੈਇਕੁਇਕੋਉਤਪਤਿਆ॥
ਜੋ ਇੱਕ ਆਪ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਜਿਸ ਇਕ ਨੇ ਹੀ (ਸਾਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ) ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ।
The One Lord is pervading everywhere; the One Lord created the Universe.
ਜੋਹਰਿਨਾਮੁਧਿਆਵਹਿਤਿਨਡਰੁਸਟਿਘਤਿਆ॥
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਸਾਰਾ ਡਰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ।
Those who meditate on the Lord's Name, cast out their fears.
ਗੁਰਮਤੀਦੇਵੈਆਪਿਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਹਰਿਜਪਿਆ॥੯॥
ਪਰ ਉਹੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਤਿ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਇਹ ਦਾਤਿ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੯॥
The Lord Himself blesses them with Guru's Instruction; the Gurmukh meditates on the Lord. ||9||
ਸਲੋਕਮਃ੩॥
Shalok, Third Mahalaa:
ਅੰਤਰਿਗਿਆਨੁਨਆਇਓਜਿਤੁਕਿਛੁਸੋਝੀਪਾਇ॥
ਜਿਸ ਗਿਆਨ ਨਾਲ ਕੁਝ ਸਮਝ ਪੈਣੀ ਸੀ ਉਹ ਗਿਆਨ ਤਾਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਪਰਗਟ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਇਆ,
Spiritual wisdom, which would bring understanding, does not enter into his mind.
ਵਿਣੁਡਿਠਾਕਿਆਸਾਲਾਹੀਐਅੰਧਾਅੰਧੁਕਮਾਇ॥
ਫਿਰ ਜਿਸ (ਹਰੀ) ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਉਸਤਤਿ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਹੋ ਸਕੇ? ਗਿਆਨ-ਹੀਨ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਅਗਿਆਨਤਾ ਦੀ ਕਮਾਈ ਹੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
Without seeing, how can he praise the Lord? The blind act in blindness.
ਨਾਨਕਸਬਦੁਪਛਾਣੀਐਨਾਮੁਵਸੈਮਨਿਆਇ॥੧॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣੀਏ ਤਾਂ ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
O Nanak, when one realizes the Word of the Shabad, then the Naam comes to abide in the mind. ||1||

Third Mahalaa:
ਇਕਾਬਾਣੀਇਕੁਗੁਰੁਇਕੋਸਬਦੁਵੀਚਾਰਿ॥
ਕੇਵਲ ਬਾਣੀ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਮਾਣੀਕ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਵਿਚਾਰੋ-
There is One Bani; there is One Guru; there is one Shabad to contemplate.
ਸਚਾਸਉਦਾਹਟੁਸਚੁਰਤਨੀਭਰੇਭੰਡਾਰ॥
ਇਹੀ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਸੌਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਹੀ ਸੱਚਾ ਹੱਟ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਵਿਚ ਰਤਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਭੰਡਾਰੇ ਭਰੇ ਪਏ ਹਨ।
True is the merchandise, and true is the shop; the warehouses are overflowing with jewels.
ਗੁਰਕਿਰਪਾਤੇਪਾਈਅਨਿਜੇਦੇਵੈਦੇਵਣਹਾਰੁ॥
ਜੇ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ (ਹਰੀ) ਦੇਵੇ ਤਾਂ (ਇਹ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ) ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦੇ ਹਨ।
By Guru's Grace, they are obtained, if the Great Giver gives them.
ਸਚਾਸਉਦਾਲਾਭੁਸਦਾਖਟਿਆਨਾਮੁਅਪਾਰੁ॥
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਸੱਚਾ ਸੌਦਾ (ਕਰ ਕੇ) ਬੇਅੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਲਾਭ ਖੱਟਿਆ ਹੈ,
Dealing in this true merchandise, one earns the profit of the incomparable Naam.
ਵਿਖੁਵਿਚਿਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁਪ੍ਰਗਟਿਆਕਰਮਿਪੀਆਵਣਹਾਰੁ॥
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ (ਮਾਇਆ) ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਵਿਚ ਵਰਤਦਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਨਾਮ-ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਇਹ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਪਿਲਾਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪਣੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਪਿਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
In the midst of poison, the Ambrosial Nectar is revealed; by His Mercy, one drinks it in.
ਨਾਨਕਸਚੁਸਲਾਹੀਐਧੰਨੁਸਵਾਰਣਹਾਰੁ॥੨॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਸ ਸਲਾਹੁਣ-ਜੋਗ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰੀਏ ਜੋ (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਦਾਤਿ ਦੇ ਕੇ) ਸਵਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
O Nanak, praise the True Lord; blessed is the Creator, the Embellisher. ||2||
ਪਉੜੀ॥
Pauree:
ਜਿਨਾਅੰਦਰਿਕੂੜੁਵਰਤੈਸਚੁਨਭਾਵਈ॥
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਕੂੜ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੱਚ ਚੰਗਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗਦਾ;
Those who are permeated by falsehood, do not love the Truth.
ਜੇਕੋਬੋਲੈਸਚੁਕੂੜਾਜਲਿਜਾਵਈ॥
ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸੱਚ ਬੋਲੇ, ਤਾਂ ਝੂਠਾ (ਸੁਣ ਕੇ) ਸੜ ਬਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ;
If someone speaks the Truth, falsehood is burnt away.
ਕੂੜਿਆਰੀਰਜੈਕੂੜਿਜਿਉਵਿਸਟਾਕਾਗੁਖਾਵਈ॥
ਝੂਠ ਦਾ ਵਪਾਰੀ ਝੂਠ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਾਂ ਵਿਸ਼ਟਾ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ)।
The false are satisfied by falsehood, like the crows who eat manure.
ਜਿਸੁਹਰਿਹੋਇਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲੁਸੋਨਾਮੁਧਿਆਵਈ॥
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਤੇ ਹਰੀ ਦਇਆਲ ਹੋਵੇ, ਉਹ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦਾ ਹੈ;
When the Lord grants His Grace, then one meditates on the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
ਹਰਿਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਨਾਮੁਅਰਾਧਿਕੂੜੁਪਾਪੁਲਹਿਜਾਵਈ॥੧੦॥
ਜੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਅਰਾਧੀਏ, ਤਾਂ ਕੂੜ ਤੇ ਪਾਪ ਲਹਿ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੦॥
As Gurmukh, worship the Lord's Name in adoration; fraud and sin shall disappear. ||10||
ਸਲੋਕੁਮਃ੩॥
Shalok, Third Mahalaa:
ਸੇਖਾਚਉਚਕਿਆਚਉਵਾਇਆਏਹੁਮਨੁਇਕਤੁਘਰਿਆਣਿ॥
ਹੇ ਚੁੱਕੇ ਚੁਕਾਏ ਸ਼ੇਖ਼! ਇਸ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਇਕ ਟਿਕਾਣੇ ਤੇ ਲਿਆ;
O Shaykh, you wander in the four directions, blown by the four winds; bring your mind back to the home of the One Lord.
ਏਹੜਤੇਹੜਛਡਿਤੂਗੁਰਕਾਸਬਦੁਪਛਾਣੁ॥
ਵਿੰਗੀਆਂ ਟੇਢੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਛੱਡ ਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝ।
Renounce your petty arguments, and realize the Word of the Guru's Shabad.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਅਗੈਢਹਿਪਉਸਭੁਕਿਛੁਜਾਣੈਜਾਣੁ॥
ਹੇ ਸ਼ੇਖਾ! ਜੋ (ਸਭ ਦਾ) ਜਾਣੂ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਚਰਨੀਂ ਲੱਗ;
Bow in humble respect before the True Guru; He is the Knower who knows everything.
ਆਸਾਮਨਸਾਜਲਾਇਤੂਹੋਇਰਹੁਮਿਹਮਾਣੁ॥
ਆਸਾਂ ਤੇ ਮਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਦੌੜਾਂ ਮਿਟਾ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਾਹੁਣਾ ਸਮਝ;
Burn away your hopes and desires, and live like a guest in this world.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਕੈਭਾਣੈਭੀਚਲਹਿਤਾਦਰਗਹਪਾਵਹਿਮਾਣੁ॥
ਜੇ ਤੂੰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਭਾਣੇ ਵਿਚ ਚਲੇਂਗਾ ਤਾਂ ਰੱਬ ਦੀ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਆਦਰ ਪਾਵੇਂਗਾ।
If you walk in harmony with the True Guru's Will, then you shall be honored in the Court of the Lord.
ਨਾਨਕਜਿਨਾਮੁਨਚੇਤਨੀਤਿਨਧਿਗੁਪੈਨਣੁਧਿਗੁਖਾਣੁ॥੧॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਿਮਰਦੇ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ (ਚੰਗਾ) ਖਾਣਾ ਤੇ (ਚੰਗਾ) ਪਹਿਨਣਾ ਫਿਟਕਾਰ-ਜੋਗ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
O Nanak, those who do not contemplate the Naam, the Name of the Lord - cursed are their clothes, and cursed is their food. ||1||

Third Mahalaa:
ਹਰਿਗੁਣਤੋਟਿਨਆਵਈਕੀਮਤਿਕਹਣੁਨਜਾਇ॥
ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਬਿਆਨ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਉਹ ਗੁਣ ਮੁੱਕਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ, ਤੇ ਨਾਹ ਹੀ ਇਹ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਹਾਝਣ ਲਈ ਮੁੱਲ ਕੀਹ ਹੈ;
There is no end to the Lord's Glorious Praises; His worth cannot be described.
ਨਾਨਕਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਹਰਿਗੁਣਰਵਹਿਗੁਣਮਹਿਰਹੈਸਮਾਇ॥੨॥
(ਪਰ,) ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਜੀਊੜੇ ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ। (ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ) ਗੁਣਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋਇਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
O Nanak, the Gurmukhs chant the Glorious Praises of the Lord; they are absorbed in His Glorious Virtues. ||2||
ਪਉੜੀ॥
Pauree:
ਹਰਿਚੋਲੀਦੇਹਸਵਾਰੀਕਢਿਪੈਧੀਭਗਤਿਕਰਿ॥
(ਇਹ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ) ਸਰੀਰ, ਮਾਨੋ, ਚੋਲੀ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਬਣਾਈ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਭਗਤੀ (-ਰੂਪ ਕਸੀਦਾ) ਕੱਢ ਕੇ ਇਹ ਚੋਲੀ ਪਹਿਨਣ-ਜੋਗ ਬਣਦੀ ਹੈ।
The Lord has adorned the coat of the body; He has embroidered it with devotional worship.
ਹਰਿਪਾਟੁਲਗਾਅਧਿਕਾਈਬਹੁਬਹੁਬਿਧਿਭਾਤਿਕਰਿ॥
(ਇਸ ਚੋਲੀ ਨੂੰ) ਬਹੁਤ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਈ ਵੰਨਗੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਹਰੀ-ਨਾਮ ਪੱਟ ਲੱਗਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ;
The Lord has woven His silk into it, in so many ways and fashions.
ਕੋਈਬੂਝੈਬੂਝਣਹਾਰਾਅੰਤਰਿਬਿਬੇਕੁਕਰਿ॥
(ਇਸ ਭੇਤ ਨੂੰ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਸਮਝਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ।
How rare is that man of understanding, who understands, and deliberates within.
ਸੋਬੂਝੈਏਹੁਬਿਬੇਕੁਜਿਸੁਬੁਝਾਏਆਪਿਹਰਿ॥
ਇਸ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਹਰੀ ਆਪ ਸਮਝਾਵੇ।
He alone understands these deliberations, whom the Lord Himself inspires to understand.
ਜਨੁਨਾਨਕੁਕਹੈਵਿਚਾਰਾਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਹਰਿਸਤਿਹਰਿ॥੧੧॥
ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ ਇਹ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਦੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ) ॥੧੧॥
Poor servant Nanak speaks: the Gurmukhs know the Lord, the Lord is True. ||11||
