Fourth Mahalaa:
ਜਿਨਕਉਆਪਿਦੇਇਵਡਿਆਈਜਗਤੁਭੀਆਪੇਆਣਿਤਿਨਕਉਪੈਰੀਪਾਏ॥
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਚਰਨੀਂ ਸਾਰੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਲਿਆ ਕੇ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
The Lord Himself bestows glorious greatness; He Himself causes the world to come and fall at their feet.
ਡਰੀਐਤਾਂਜੇਕਿਛੁਆਪਦੂਕੀਚੈਸਭੁਕਰਤਾਆਪਣੀਕਲਾਵਧਾਏ॥
(ਇਸ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਨੂੰ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ) ਤਦ ਡਰੀਏ, ਜੇ ਅਸੀਂ ਕੁਝ ਆਪਣੇ ਵਲੋਂ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੋਵੀਏ, ਇਹ ਤਾਂ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਆਪਣੀ ਕਲਾ ਆਪ ਵਧਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।
We should only be afraid, if we try to do things by ourselves; the Creator is increasing His Power in every way.
ਦੇਖਹੁਭਾਈਏਹੁਅਖਾੜਾਹਰਿਪ੍ਰੀਤਮਸਚੇਕਾਜਿਨਿਆਪਣੈਜੋਰਿਸਭਿਆਣਿਨਿਵਾਏ॥
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਚੇਤਾ ਰੱਖੋ, ਜਿਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਬਲ ਨਾਲ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਲਿਆ ਕੇ (ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਅੱਗੇ) ਨਿਵਾਇਆ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਸੱਚੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਸੰਸਾਰ (ਇਕ) ਅਖਾੜਾ ਹੈ,
Behold, O Siblings of Destiny: this is the Arena of the Beloved True Lord; His power brings everyone to bow in humility.
ਆਪਣਿਆਭਗਤਾਕੀਰਖਕਰੇਹਰਿਸੁਆਮੀਨਿੰਦਕਾਦੁਸਟਾਕੇਮੁਹਕਾਲੇਕਰਾਏ॥
(ਜਿਸ ਵਿਚ) ਉਹ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪਣੇ ਭਗਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਨਿੰਦਕਾਂ ਦੁਸ਼ਟਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਕਾਲੇ ਕਰਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
The Lord, our Lord and Master, preserves and protects His devotees; He blackens the faces of the slanderers and evil-doers.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਕੀਵਡਿਆਈਨਿਤਚੜੈਸਵਾਈਹਰਿਕੀਰਤਿਭਗਤਿਨਿਤਆਪਿਕਰਾਏ॥
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਹਿਮਾ ਸਦਾ ਵਧਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਹਰੀ ਆਪਣੀ ਕੀਰਤੀ ਤੇ ਭਗਤੀ ਸਦਾ ਆਪ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਕਰਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
The glorious greatness of the True Guru increases day by day; the Lord inspires His devotees to continually sing the Kirtan of His Praises.
ਅਨਦਿਨੁਨਾਮੁਜਪਹੁਗੁਰਸਿਖਹੁਹਰਿਕਰਤਾਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਘਰੀਵਸਾਏ॥
ਹੇ ਗੁਰ-ਸਿਖੋ! ਹਰ ਰੋਜ਼ (ਭਾਵ, ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ) ਨਾਮ ਜਪੋ (ਤਾ ਕਿ) ਸਿਰਜਨਹਾਰ ਹਰੀ (ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ) ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ (ਤੁਹਾਡੇ) ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾ ਦੇਵੇ।
O GurSikhs, chant the Naam, the Name of the Lord, night and day; through the True Guru, the Creator Lord will come to dwell within the home of your inner being.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਕੀਬਾਣੀਸਤਿਸਤਿਕਰਿਜਾਣਹੁਗੁਰਸਿਖਹੁਹਰਿਕਰਤਾਆਪਿਮੁਹਹੁਕਢਾਏ॥
ਹੇ ਗੁਰ-ਸਿਖੋ! ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਨਿਰੋਲ ਸੱਚ ਸਮਝੋ (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਸਿਰਜਨਹਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਇਹ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਤੋਂ ਅਖਵਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
O GurSikhs, know that the Bani, the Word of the True Guru, is true, absolutely true. The Creator Lord Himself causes the Guru to chant it.
ਗੁਰਸਿਖਾਕੇਮੁਹਉਜਲੇਕਰੇਹਰਿਪਿਆਰਾਗੁਰਕਾਜੈਕਾਰੁਸੰਸਾਰਿਸਭਤੁਕਰਾਏ॥
ਪਿਆਰਾ ਹਰੀ ਗੁਰ-ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਉਜਲੇ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਸਭਨੀਂ ਪਾਸੀਂ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਜਿੱਤ ਕਰਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
The Beloved Lord makes the faces of His GurSikhs radiant; He makes the whole world applaud and acclaim the Guru.
ਜਨੁਨਾਨਕੁਹਰਿਕਾਦਾਸੁਹੈਹਰਿਦਾਸਨਕੀਹਰਿਪੈਜਰਖਾਏ॥੨॥
ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ ਭੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਸੇਵਕ ਹੈ; ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪਣੇ ਦਾਸਾਂ ਦੀ ਲਾਜ ਆਪ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
Servant Nanak is the slave of the Lord; the Lord Himself preserves the honor of His slave. ||2||

ਤੂਸਚਾਸਾਹਿਬੁਆਪਿਹੈਸਚੁਸਾਹਹਮਾਰੇ॥
ਹੇ ਸਾਡੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਸ਼ਾਹ! ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸੱਚਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਹੈਂ।
O My True Lord and Master, You Yourself are my True Lord King.
ਸਚੁਪੂਜੀਨਾਮੁਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਇਪ੍ਰਭਵਣਜਾਰੇਥਾਰੇ॥
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਅਸੀਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਵਣਜਾਰੇ ਹਾਂ, ਸਾਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਨਿਸਚੇ ਕਰਾ ਕਿ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਪੂੰਜੀ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਹੈ।
Please, implant within me the true treasure of Your Name; O God, I am Your merchant.
ਸਚੁਸੇਵਹਿਸਚੁਵਣੰਜਿਲੈਹਿਗੁਣਕਥਹਨਿਰਾਰੇ॥
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਸੱਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸਉਦਾ ਖ਼ਰੀਦਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਨਿਰਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਉਚਾਰਦੇ ਹਨ,
I serve the True One, and deal in the True One; I chant Your Wondrous Praises.
ਸੇਵਕਭਾਇਸੇਜਨਮਿਲੇਗੁਰਸਬਦਿਸਵਾਰੇ॥
ਉਹ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਸੁਧਰ ਕੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਸੁਭਾਉ ਵਾਲੇ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਦੇ ਹਨ।
Those humble beings who serve the Lord with love meet Him; they are adorned with the Word of the Guru's Shabad.
ਤੂਸਚਾਸਾਹਿਬੁਅਲਖੁਹੈਗੁਰਸਬਦਿਲਖਾਰੇ॥੧੪॥
ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਤੂੰ ਸੱਚਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਹੈਂ, ਤੈਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਸਮਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ (ਪਰ) ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਤੇਰੀ ਸੂਝ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੧੪॥
O my True Lord and Master, You are unknowable; through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, You are known. ||14||
ਸਲੋਕਮਃ੪॥
Shalok, Fourth Mahalaa:
ਜਿਸੁਅੰਦਰਿਤਾਤਿਪਰਾਈਹੋਵੈਤਿਸਦਾਕਦੇਨਹੋਵੀਭਲਾ॥
ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਾਈ ਈਰਖਾ ਹੋਵੇ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਆਪਣਾ ਭੀ ਕਦੇ ਭਲਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ।
One whose heart is filled with jealousy of others, never comes to any good.
ਓਸਦੈਆਖਿਐਕੋਈਨਲਗੈਨਿਤਓਜਾੜੀਪੂਕਾਰੇਖਲਾ॥
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਬਚਨ ਤੇ ਕੋਈ ਇਤਬਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ, ਉਹ ਸਦਾ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਉਜਾੜ ਵਿਚ ਖਲੋਤਾ ਕੂਕਦਾ ਹੈ।
No one pays any attention to what he says; he is just a fool, crying out endlessly in the wilderness.
ਜਿਸੁਅੰਦਰਿਚੁਗਲੀਚੁਗਲੋਵਜੈਕੀਤਾਕਰਤਿਆਓਸਦਾਸਭੁਗਇਆ॥
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਚੁਗ਼ਲੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਚੁਗ਼ਲ (ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨਾਲ) ਹੀ ਮਸ਼ਹੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੀ (ਪਿਛਲੀ) ਸਾਰੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੋਈ ਕਮਾਈ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
One whose heart is filled with malicious gossip, is known as a malicious gossip; everything he does is in vain.
ਨਿਤਚੁਗਲੀਕਰੇਅਣਹੋਦੀਪਰਾਈਮੁਹੁਕਢਿਨਸਕੈਓਸਦਾਕਾਲਾਭਇਆ॥
ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਪਰਾਈ ਝੂਠੀ ਚੁਗ਼ਲੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਮੁਕਾਲਖ ਕਰਕੇ ਉਹ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗ ਸਕਦਾ (ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮੂੰਹ ਕਾਲਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਵਿਖਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ)।
Night and day, he continually gossips about others; his face has been blackened, and he cannot show it to anyone.
ਕਰਮਧਰਤੀਸਰੀਰੁਕਲਿਜੁਗਵਿਚਿਜੇਹਾਕੋਬੀਜੇਤੇਹਾਕੋਖਾਏ॥
ਇਸ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਵਿਚ ਸਰੀਰ ਕਰਮ-(ਰੂਪ ਬੀਜ ਬੀਜਣ ਲਈ) ਭੁੰਏਂ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਵਿਚ ਜਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਬੀਜ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਬੀਜਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਫਲ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
The body is the field of action, in this Dark Age of Kali Yuga; as you plant, so shall you harvest.
ਗਲਾਉਪਰਿਤਪਾਵਸੁਨਹੋਈਵਿਸੁਖਾਧੀਤਤਕਾਲਮਰਿਜਾਏ॥
ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਨਿਬੇੜਾ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ, ਜੇ ਵਿਹੁ ਖਾਧੀ ਜਾਏ ਤਾਂ (ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਭੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਬਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ) ਤੁਰੰਤ ਮਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
Justice is not passed on mere words; if someone eats poison, he dies.
ਭਾਈਵੇਖਹੁਨਿਆਉਸਚੁਕਰਤੇਕਾਜੇਹਾਕੋਈਕਰੇਤੇਹਾਕੋਈਪਾਏ॥
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਸੱਚੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਿਆਉਂ ਵੇਖੋ, ਜਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਓਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਫਲ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
O Siblings of Destiny, behold the justice of the True Creator; as people act, so they are rewarded.
ਜਨਨਾਨਕਕਉਸਭਸੋਝੀਪਾਈਹਰਿਦਰਕੀਆਬਾਤਾਆਖਿਸੁਣਾਏ॥੧॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਸ ਦਾਸ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਇਹ ਸਮਝਣ ਦੀ ਸਾਰੀ ਬੁਧਿ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਦੀਆਂ ਇਹ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਸੁਣਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
The Lord has bestowed total understanding upon servant Nanak; he speaks and proclaims the words of the Lord's Court. ||1||

Fourth Mahalaa:
ਹੋਦੈਪਰਤਖਿਗੁਰੂਜੋਵਿਛੁੜੇਤਿਨਕਉਦਰਿਢੋਈਨਾਹੀ॥
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਪਰਤੱਖ ਹੁੰਦਿਆਂ ਭੀ ਜੋ ਨਿੰਦਕ (ਗੁਰ ਤੋਂ) ਵਿੱਛੜੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਢੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦੀ।
Those who separate themselves from the Guru, in spite of His Constant Presence - they find no place of rest in the Court of the Lord.
ਕੋਈਜਾਇਮਿਲੈਤਿਨਨਿੰਦਕਾਮੁਹਫਿਕੇਥੁਕਥੁਕਮੁਹਿਪਾਹੀ॥
ਜੋ ਕੋਈ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਸੰਗ ਭੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਭੀ ਮੂੰਹ ਫਿੱਕਾ ਤੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਤੇ ਨਿਰੀ ਥੁੱਕ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਲੋਕ ਮੂੰਹ ਤੇ ਫਿਟਕਾਂ ਪਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ)
If someone goes to meet with those dull-faced slanderers, he will find their faces covered with spit.
ਜੋਸਤਿਗੁਰਿਫਿਟਕੇਸੇਸਭਜਗਤਿਫਿਟਕੇਨਿਤਭੰਭਲਭੂਸੇਖਾਹੀ॥
(ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਵਲੋਂ ਵਿੱਛੜੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਭੀ ਫਿਟਕਾਰੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਡਕੋ-ਡੋਲੇ ਖਾਂਦੇ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
Those who are cursed by the True Guru, are cursed by all the world. They wander around endlessly.
ਜਿਨਗੁਰੁਗੋਪਿਆਆਪਣਾਸੇਲੈਦੇਢਹਾਫਿਰਾਹੀ॥
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਸਦਾ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਢਾਹਾਂ ਮਾਰਦੇ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
Those who do not publicly affirm their Guru wander around, moaning and groaning.
ਤਿਨਕੀਭੁਖਕਦੇਨਉਤਰੈਨਿਤਭੁਖਾਭੁਖਕੂਕਾਹੀ॥
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਕਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਉਤਰਦੀ, ਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਭੁੱਖ ਭੁੱਖ ਕੂਕਦੇ ਹਨ।
Their hunger shall never depart; afflicted by constant hunger, they cry out in pain.
ਓਨਾਦਾਆਖਿਆਕੋਨਾਸੁਣੈਨਿਤਹਉਲੇਹਉਲਿਮਰਾਹੀ॥
ਕੋਈ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਗੱਲ ਦਾ ਇਤਬਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ (ਇਸ ਕਰਕੇ) ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਫ਼ਿਕਰ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਖਪਦੇ ਹਨ।
No one hears what they have to say; they live in constant fear and terror, until they finally die.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਕੀਵਡਿਆਈਵੇਖਿਨਸਕਨੀਓਨਾਅਗੈਪਿਛੈਥਾਉਨਾਹੀ॥
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਹਿਮਾ ਜਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦੇ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਲੋਕ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾਣਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ।
They cannot bear the glorious greatness of the True Guru, and they find no place of rest, here or hereafter.
ਜੋਸਤਿਗੁਰਿਮਾਰੇਤਿਨਜਾਇਮਿਲਹਿਰਹਦੀਖੁਹਦੀਸਭਪਤਿਗਵਾਹੀ॥
ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਜੋ ਵਿੱਛੜੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜਾ ਮਿਲਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਭੀ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਾੜੀ ਮੋਟੀ ਸਾਰੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਗਵਾ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ,
Those who go out to meet with those who have been cursed by the True Guru, lose all remnants of their honor.
