ਸਚਾਸਬਦੁਬੀਚਾਰਿਕਾਲੁਵਿਧਉਸਿਆ॥
ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸੱਚਾ ਗੁਰ-ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵੀਚਾਰ ਕੇ (ਆਤਮਕ) ਮੌਤ (ਦਾ ਡਰ) ਦੂਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
Reflecting on the True Word of the Shabad, death is overcome.
ਢਾਢੀਕਥੇਅਕਥੁਸਬਦਿਸਵਾਰਿਆ॥
ਗੁਰੂ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਸੁਧਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਢਾਢੀ ਅਕੱਥ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
Speaking the Unspoken Speech of the Lord, one is adorned with the Word of His Shabad.
ਨਾਨਕਗੁਣਗਹਿਰਾਸਿਹਰਿਜੀਉਮਿਲੇਪਿਆਰਿਆ॥੨੩॥
(ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ), ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੀ ਪੂੰਜੀ ਇਕੱਠੀ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨੩॥
Nanak holds tight to the Treasure of Virtue, and meets with the Dear, Beloved Lord. ||23||
ਸਲੋਕੁਮਃ੧॥
Shalok, First Mahalaa:
ਖਤਿਅਹੁਜੰਮੇਖਤੇਕਰਨਿਤਖਤਿਆਵਿਚਿਪਾਹਿ॥
ਪਾਪਾਂ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ (ਜੋ ਜੀਵ) ਜੰਮਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਇਥੇ ਭੀ) ਪਾਪ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ (ਅਗਾਂਹ ਭੀ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਕੀਤੇ ਪਾਪਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੰਸਕਾਰਾਂ ਕਰਕੇ) ਪਾਪਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਵਿਰਤ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
Born because of the karma of their past mistakes, they make more mistakes, and fall into mistakes.
ਧੋਤੇਮੂਲਿਨਉਤਰਹਿਜੇਸਉਧੋਵਣਪਾਹਿ॥
ਇਹ ਪਾਪ ਧੋਤਿਆਂ ਉੱਕਾ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਉਤਰਦੇ ਭਾਵੇਂ ਸੌ ਧੋਣ ਧੋਈਏ (ਭਾਵ, ਭਾਵੇਂ ਸੌ ਵਾਰੀ ਧੋਣ ਦਾ ਜਤਨ ਕਰੀਏ)।
By washing, their pollution is not removed, even though they may wash hundreds of times.
ਨਾਨਕਬਖਸੇਬਖਸੀਅਹਿਨਾਹਿਤਪਾਹੀਪਾਹਿ॥੧॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰੇ (ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਪਾਪ) ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਨਹੀਂ ਤਾਂ ਜੁੱਤੀਆਂ ਹੀ ਪੈਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ ॥੧॥
O Nanak, if God forgives, they are forgiven; otherwise, they are kicked and beaten. ||1||
ਮਃ੧॥
First Mahalaa:
ਨਾਨਕਬੋਲਣੁਝਖਣਾਦੁਖਛਡਿਮੰਗੀਅਹਿਸੁਖ॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਇਹ ਜੋ) ਦੁਖ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਸੁਖ ਪਏ ਮੰਗਦੇ ਹਨ, ਅਜੇਹਾ ਬੋਲਣਾ ਸਿਰ ਖਪਾਈ ਹੀ ਹੈ।
O Nanak, it is absurd to ask to be spared from pain by begging for comfort.
ਸੁਖੁਦੁਖੁਦੁਇਦਰਿਕਪੜੇਪਹਿਰਹਿਜਾਇਮਨੁਖ॥
ਸੁਖ ਤੇ ਦੁਖ ਦੋਵੇਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਕੱਪੜੇ ਮਿਲੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ ਜੋ, ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜਨਮ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਇਥੇ ਪਹਿਨਦੇ ਹਨ (ਭਾਵ, ਦੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੁਖਾਂ ਤੇ ਚੱਕਰ ਹਰੇਕ ਉੱਤੇ ਆਉਂਦੇ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ)।
Pleasure and pain are the two garments given, to be worn in the Court of the Lord.
ਜਿਥੈਬੋਲਣਿਹਾਰੀਐਤਿਥੈਚੰਗੀਚੁਪ॥੨॥
ਸੋ ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਇਤਰਾਜ਼ ਗਿਲਾ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ (ਅੰਤ) ਹਾਰ ਹੀ ਮੰਨਣੀ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਓਥੇ ਚੁੱਪ ਰਹਿਣਾ ਹੀ ਚੰਗਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਤੁਰਨਾ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਚੰਗਾ ਹੈ) ॥੨॥
Where you are bound to lose by speaking, there, you ought to remain silent. ||2||
ਪਉੜੀ॥
Pauree:
ਚਾਰੇਕੁੰਡਾਦੇਖਿਅੰਦਰੁਭਾਲਿਆ॥
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਚਾਰੇ ਤਰਫਾਂ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ (ਭਾਵ, ਬਾਹਰ ਚਵੀਂ ਪਾਸੀਂ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ) ਆਪਣਾ ਅੰਦਰ ਭਾਲਦਾ ਹੈ,
After looking around in the four directions, I looked within my own self.
ਸਚੈਪੁਰਖਿਅਲਖਿਸਿਰਜਿਨਿਹਾਲਿਆ॥
(ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਦਿੱਸ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਸੱਚੇ ਅਲੱਖ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਨੇ (ਜਗਤ) ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਕੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਸੰਭਾਲ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ)।
There, I saw the True, Invisible Lord Creator.
ਉਝੜਿਭੁਲੇਰਾਹਗੁਰਿਵੇਖਾਲਿਆ॥
ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਭਟਕ ਰਹੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਰਸਤਾ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ਹੈ (ਰਾਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਵਿਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ)।
I was wandering in the wilderness, but now the Guru has shown me the Way.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਸਚੇਵਾਹੁਸਚੁਸਮਾਲਿਆ॥
ਸੱਚੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਸ਼ਾਬਾਸ਼ੇ ਹੈ (ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ) ਸੱਚੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰੀਦਾ ਹੈ।
Hail to the True, True Guru, through whom we merge in the Truth.
ਪਾਇਆਰਤਨੁਘਰਾਹੁਦੀਵਾਬਾਲਿਆ॥
(ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਗਿਆਨ ਦਾ) ਦੀਵਾ ਜਗਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਹੀ (ਨਾਮ-) ਰਤਨ ਲੱਭ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ।
I have found the jewel within the home of my own self; the lamp within has been lit.
ਸਚੈਸਬਦਿਸਲਾਹਿਸੁਖੀਏਸਚਵਾਲਿਆ॥
(ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਨ ਆ ਕੇ) ਸੱਚੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਸੁਖੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਖਸਮ ਵਾਲੇ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
Those who praise the True Word of the Shabad, abide in the peace of Truth.
ਨਿਡਰਿਆਡਰੁਲਗਿਗਰਬਿਸਿਗਾਲਿਆ॥
(ਪਰ) ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਹੋਰ) ਡਰ ਮਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਪਏ ਗਲਦੇ ਹਨ।
But those who do not have the Fear of God, are overtaken by fear. They are destroyed by their own pride.
ਨਾਵਹੁਭੁਲਾਜਗੁਫਿਰੈਬੇਤਾਲਿਆ॥੨੪॥
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਭੁੱਲਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਜਗਤ ਬੇ-ਤਾਲ (ਬੇ ਥਵ੍ਹਾ) ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨੪॥
Having forgotten the Name, the world is roaming around like a wild demon. ||24||
ਸਲੋਕੁਮਃ੩॥
Shalok, Third Mahalaa:
ਭੈਵਿਚਿਜੰਮੈਭੈਮਰੈਭੀਭਉਮਨਮਹਿਹੋਇ॥
ਜਗਤ ਸਹਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੰਮਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਹਮ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਸਹਮ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
In fear we are born, and in fear we die. Fear is always present in the mind.
ਨਾਨਕਭੈਵਿਚਿਜੇਮਰੈਸਹਿਲਾਆਇਆਸੋਇ॥੧॥
(ਪਰ) ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਡਰ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਮਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਜੰਮਣਾ ਮੁਬਾਰਕ ਹੈ (ਜਗਤ ਦੀ ਮਮਤਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਸਹਮ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਜਦੋਂ ਇਹ ਅਪਣੱਤ ਤੇ ਮਮਤਾ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਏ ਤਦੋਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਚੀਜ਼ ਦੇ ਖੁੱਸਣ ਦਾ ਸਹਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ) ॥੧॥
O Nanak, if one dies in the fear of God, his coming into the world is blessed and approved. ||1||
ਮਃ੩॥
Third Mahalaa:
ਭੈਵਿਣੁਜੀਵੈਬਹੁਤੁਬਹੁਤੁਖੁਸੀਆਖੁਸੀਕਮਾਇ॥
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਲੰਮੀ ਉਮਰ ਭੀ ਜੀਊਂਦਾ ਰਹੇ ਤੇ ਬੜੀਆਂ ਮੌਜਾਂ ਮਾਣਦਾ ਰਹੇ,
Without the fear of God, you may live very, very long, and savor the most enjoyable pleasures.
ਨਾਨਕਭੈਵਿਣੁਜੇਮਰੈਮੁਹਿਕਾਲੈਉਠਿਜਾਇ॥੨॥
ਤਾਂ ਭੀ, ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਉਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੀ ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਮੁਕਾਲਖ ਖੱਟ ਕੇ ਹੀ ਇਥੋਂ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
O Nanak, if you die without the fear of God, you will arise and depart with a blackened face. ||2||
ਪਉੜੀ॥
Pauree:
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਹੋਇਦਇਆਲੁਤਸਰਧਾਪੂਰੀਐ॥
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉੱਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੇ (ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਉੱਤੇ) ਪੱਕਾ ਭਰੋਸਾ ਬੱਝ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
When the True Guru is merciful, then your desires will be fulfilled.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਹੋਇਦਇਆਲੁਨਕਬਹੂੰਝੂਰੀਐ॥
ਉਹ (ਕਿਸੇ ਦੁੱਖ-ਕਲੇਸ਼ ਦੇ ਆਉਣ ਤੇ) ਕਦੇ ਗਿਲਾ ਗੁਜ਼ਾਰੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ,
When the True Guru is merciful, you will never grieve.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਹੋਇਦਇਆਲੁਤਾਦੁਖੁਨਜਾਣੀਐ॥
(ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਉਹ (ਕਿਸੇ ਆਏ ਦੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ) ਦੁੱਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦਾ,
When the True Guru is merciful, you will know no pain.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਹੋਇਦਇਆਲੁਤਾਹਰਿਰੰਗੁਮਾਣੀਐ॥
ਸਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਮੇਲ ਦਾ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ।
When the True Guru is merciful, you will enjoy the Lord's Love.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਹੋਇਦਇਆਲੁਤਾਜਮਕਾਡਰੁਕੇਹਾ॥
(ਦੁੱਖ ਕਲੇਸ਼ ਤਾਂ ਕਿਤੇ ਰਿਹਾ) ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਜਮ ਦਾ ਭੀ ਡਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ।
When the True Guru is merciful, then why should you fear death?
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਹੋਇਦਇਆਲੁਤਾਸਦਹੀਸੁਖੁਦੇਹਾ॥
(ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
When the True Guru is merciful, the body is always at peace.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਹੋਇਦਇਆਲੁਤਾਨਵਨਿਧਿਪਾਈਐ॥
ਜਿਸ ਉਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਇਆਵਾਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਏ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਨੌਂ ਹੀ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਮਿਲ ਪਏ ਹਨ,
When the True Guru is merciful, the nine treasures are obtained.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਹੋਇਦਇਆਲੁਤਸਚਿਸਮਾਈਐ॥੨੫॥
(ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਉਹ ਤਾਂ (ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਕ) ਸੱਚੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨੫॥
When the True Guru is merciful, you shall be absorbed in the True Lord. ||25||
ਸਲੋਕੁਮਃ੧॥
Shalok, First Mahalaa:
ਸਿਰੁਖੋਹਾਇਪੀਅਹਿਮਲਵਾਣੀਜੂਠਾਮੰਗਿਮੰਗਿਖਾਹੀ॥
(ਇਹ ਸਰੇਵੜੇ ਜੀਵ-ਹਿੰਸਾ ਦੇ ਵਹਿਮ ਵਿਚ) ਸਿਰ (ਦੇ ਵਾਲ) ਪੁਟਾ ਕੇ (ਕਿ ਕਿਤੇ ਜੂਆਂ ਨਾ ਪੈ ਜਾਣ) ਮੈਲਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਪੀਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਜੂਠੀ ਰੋਟੀ ਮੰਗ ਮੰਗ ਕੇ ਖਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ;
They pluck the hair out of their heads, and drink in filthy water; they beg endlessly and eat the garbage which others have thrown away.
ਫੋਲਿਫਦੀਹਤਿਮੁਹਿਲੈਨਿਭੜਾਸਾਪਾਣੀਦੇਖਿਸਗਾਹੀ॥
(ਆਪਣੇ) ਪਖ਼ਾਨੇ ਨੂੰ ਫੋਲ ਕੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਵਿਚ (ਗੰਦੀ) ਹਵਾੜ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ (ਇਸ ਤੋਂ) ਸੰਗਦੇ ਹਨ (ਭਾਵ, ਪਾਣੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਵਰਤਦੇ)।
They spread manure, they suck in rotting smells, and they are afraid of clean water.
ਭੇਡਾਵਾਗੀਸਿਰੁਖੋਹਾਇਨਿਭਰੀਅਨਿਹਥਸੁਆਹੀ॥
ਭੇਡਾਂ ਵਾਂਗ ਸਿਰ (ਦੇ ਵਾਲ) ਪੁਟਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਵਾਲ ਪੁੱਟਣ ਵਾਲਿਆਂ ਦੇ) ਹੱਥ ਸੁਆਹ ਨਾਲ ਭਰੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
Their hands are smeared with ashes, and the hair on their heads is plucked out-they are like sheep!
ਮਾਊਪੀਊਕਿਰਤੁਗਵਾਇਨਿਟਬਰਰੋਵਨਿਧਾਹੀ॥
ਮਾਪਿਆਂ ਵਾਲਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਕੰਮ (ਭਾਵ, ਹੱਥੀਂ ਕਮਾਈ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਟੱਬਰ ਪਾਲਣ ਦਾ ਕੰਮ) ਛੱਡ ਬੈਠਦੇ ਹਨ (ਇਸ ਲਈ) ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਟੱਬਰ ਢਾਹਾਂ ਮਾਰ ਮਾਰ ਰੋਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
They have renounced the lifestyle of their mothers and fathers, and their families and relatives cry out in distress.
ਓਨਾਪਿੰਡੁਨਪਤਲਿਕਿਰਿਆਨਦੀਵਾਮੁਏਕਿਥਾਊਪਾਹੀ॥
(ਇਹ ਲੋਕ ਤਾਂ ਇਉਂ ਗਵਾਇਆ, ਅੱਗੇ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਦਾ ਹਾਲ ਸੁਣੋ) ਨਾ ਤਾਂ ਹਿੰਦੂ-ਮਤ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ (ਮਰਨ ਪਿੱਛੋਂ) ਪਿੰਡ ਪੱਤਲ ਕਿਰਿਆ ਦੀਵਾ ਆਦਿਕ ਦੀ ਰਸਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਮਰੇ ਹੋਏ ਪਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਿਥੇ ਜਾ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ (ਭਾਵ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਸਵਾਰਨ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਆਹਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ)।
No one offers the rice dishes at their last rites, and no one lights the lamps for them. After their death, where will they be sent?
ਅਠਸਠਿਤੀਰਥਦੇਨਿਨਢੋਈਬ੍ਰਹਮਣਅੰਨੁਨਖਾਹੀ॥
(ਹਿੰਦੂਆਂ ਦੇ) ਅਠਾਹਠ ਤੀਰਥ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਢੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੇਂਦੇ (ਭਾਵ ਹਿੰਦੂਆਂ ਵਾਂਗ ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਤੇ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦੇ), ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ) ਅੰਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਖਾਂਦੇ (ਭਾਵ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣਾਂ ਦੀ ਭੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦੇ)।
The sixty-eight sacred shrines of pilgrimage give them no place of protection, and no Brahmin will eat their food.
ਸਦਾਕੁਚੀਲਰਹਹਿਦਿਨੁਰਾਤੀਮਥੈਟਿਕੇਨਾਹੀ॥
ਸਦਾ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਬੜੇ ਗੰਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਮੱਥੇ ਉਤੇ ਤਿਲਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਾਉਂਦੇ (ਭਾਵ, ਨ੍ਹਾ ਧੋ ਕੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਫ਼-ਸੁਥਰਾ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦੇ)।
They remain polluted forever, day and night; they do not apply the ceremonial tilak mark to their foreheads.
ਝੁੰਡੀਪਾਇਬਹਨਿਨਿਤਿਮਰਣੈਦੜਿਦੀਬਾਣਿਨਜਾਹੀ॥
ਸਦਾ ਧੌਣ ਸੁੱਟ ਕੇ ਬੈਠਦੇ ਹਨ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੇ ਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਸੋਗ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ (ਭਾਵ, ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਕੋਈ ਆਤਮਕ ਹੁਲਾਰਾ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ)। ਕਿਸੇ ਸਤਸੰਗ ਆਦਿਕ ਵਿਚ ਭੀ ਕਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦੇ।
They sit together in silence, as if in mourning; they do not go to the Lord's Court.
ਲਕੀਕਾਸੇਹਥੀਫੁੰਮਣਅਗੋਪਿਛੀਜਾਹੀ॥
ਲੱਕਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਲੇ ਬੱਧੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ, ਹੱਥਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਚਉਰੀਆਂ ਫੜੀਆਂ ਹੋਈਆਂ ਹਨ ਤੇ (ਜੀਵ-ਹਿੰਸਾ ਦੇ ਡਰ ਤੋਂ) ਇੱਕ ਕਤਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਤੁਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
With their begging bowls hanging from their waists, and their fly-brushes in their hands, they walk along in single file.
ਨਾਓਇਜੋਗੀਨਾਓਇਜੰਗਮਨਾਓਇਕਾਜੀਮੁੰਲਾ॥
ਨਾ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਜੋਗੀਆਂ ਵਾਲੀ ਰਹੁਰੀਤ, ਨਾ ਜੰਗਮਾਂ ਵਾਲੀ ਤੇ ਨਾ ਕਾਜ਼ੀ ਮੌਲਵੀਆਂ ਵਾਲੀ।
They are not Yogis, and they are not Jangams, followers of Shiva. They are not Qazis or Mullahs.
