ਰਾਜੰਤਮਾਨੰਅਭਿਮਾਨੰਤਹੀਨੰ॥
ਜਿਥੇ ਰਾਜ ਹੈ, ਉਥੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਭੀ ਹੈ, ਜਿਥੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਹੈ, ਉਥੇ ਨਿਰਾਦਰੀ ਭੀ ਹੈ।
If there is power, then there is pride. If there is egotistical pride, then there will be a fall.
ਪ੍ਰਵਿਰਤਿਮਾਰਗੰਵਰਤੰਤਿਬਿਨਾਸਨੰ॥
ਸੋ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਰਸਤੇ ਵਿਚ ਹਰੇਕ ਚੀਜ਼ ਦਾ ਅੰਤ (ਭੀ) ਹੈ।
Engrossed in worldly ways, one is ruined.
ਗੋਬਿੰਦਭਜਨਸਾਧਸੰਗੇਣਅਸਥਿਰੰਨਾਨਕਭਗਵੰਤਭਜਨਾਸਨੰ॥੧੨॥
ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਹੀ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ (ਦੇ ਆਸਰੇ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ)। (ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਭਗਵਾਨ ਦੇ ਭਜਨ ਦਾ ਭੋਜਨ (ਆਪਣੀ ਜਿੰਦ ਨੂੰ ਦੇਹ) ॥੧੨॥
Meditating and vibrating on the Lord of the Universe in the Company of the Holy, you shall become steady and stable. Nanak vibrates and meditates on the Lord God. ||12||
ਕਿਰਪੰਤਹਰੀਅੰਮਤਿਤਤੁਗਿਆਨੰ॥
ਜਿਥੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਹੋਵੇ ਉਥੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਅਕਲ ਨੂੰ ਸਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਆ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ,
By the Grace of God, genuine understanding comes to the mind.
ਬਿਗਸੀਧੵਿਬੁਧਾਕੁਸਲਥਾਨੰ॥
(ਅਜੇਹੀ ਬੁੱਧੀ) ਸੁਖ ਦਾ ਟਿਕਾਣਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, (ਅਜੇਹੀ ਬੁੱਧੀ ਵਾਲੇ) ਗਿਆਨਵਾਨ ਲੋਕ ਸਦਾ ਖਿੜੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
The intellect blossoms forth, and one finds a place in the realm of celestial bliss.
ਬਸੵਿੰਤਰਿਖਿਅੰਤਿਆਗਿਮਾਨੰ॥
ਮਾਣ ਤਿਆਗਣ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਇੰਦ੍ਰੇ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ,
The senses are brought under control, and pride is abandoned.
ਸੀਤਲੰਤਰਿਦਯੰਦ੍ਰਿੜੁਸੰਤਗਿਆਨੰ॥
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਹਿਰਦਾ (ਸਦਾ) ਸੀਤਲ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਹ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਵਾਲਾ ਗਿਆਨ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪੱਕਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
The heart is cooled and soothed, and the wisdom of the Saints is implanted within.
ਰਹੰਤਜਨਮੰਹਰਿਦਰਸਲੀਣਾ॥
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਦੀਦਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਅਜੇਹੇ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ (-ਮਰਨ) ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
Reincarnation is ended, and the Blessed Vision of the Lord's Darshan is obtained.
ਬਾਜੰਤਨਾਨਕਸਬਦਬੀਣਾਂ॥੧੩॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਦੇ ਵਾਜੇ (ਸਦਾ) ਵੱਜਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧੩॥
O Nanak, the musical instrument of the Word of the Shabad vibrates and resounds within. ||13||
ਕਹੰਤਬੇਦਾਗੁਣੰਤਗੁਨੀਆਸੁਣੰਤਬਾਲਾਬਹੁਬਿਧਿਪ੍ਰਕਾਰਾ॥
ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਵੇਦ ਆਖਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਦਵਾਨ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਕਈ ਢੰਗਾਂ ਤਰੀਕਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਵਿਚਾਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ) ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀ ਸੁਣਦੇ ਹਨ।
The Vedas preach and recount God's Glories; people hear them by various ways and means.
ਦ੍ਰਿੜੰਤਸੁਬਿਦਿਆਹਰਿਹਰਿਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲਾ॥
ਪਰ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਹੋਵੇ, ਉਹ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ) ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਵਿਦਿਆ ਨੂੰ (ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ) ਦ੍ਰਿੜ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
The Merciful Lord, Har, Har, implants spiritual wisdom within.
ਨਾਮਦਾਨੁਜਾਚੰਤਨਾਨਕਦੈਨਹਾਰਗੁਰਗੋਪਾਲਾ॥੧੪॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇਵਣਹਾਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਤੋਂ (ਸਦਾ) ਨਾਮਿ ਦੀ ਦਾਤ ਹੀ ਮੰਗਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧੪॥
Nanak begs for the Gift of the Naam, the Name of the Lord. The Guru is the Great Giver, the Lord of the World. ||14||
ਨਹਚਿੰਤਾਮਾਤਪਿਤਭ੍ਰਾਤਹਨਹਚਿੰਤਾਕਛੁਲੋਕਕਹ॥
ਮਾਂ ਪਿਉ ਭਰਾ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਕਰਨੀ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹੈ,
Do not worry so much about your mother, father and siblings. Do not worry so much about other people.
ਨਹਚਿੰਤਾਬਨਿਤਾਸੁਤਮੀਤਹਪ੍ਰਵਿਰਤਿਮਾਇਆਸਨਬੰਧਨਹ॥
ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਮਿੱਤਰ ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਲੋਕ- ਜੋ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਵਿਰਤ ਹੋਣ ਕਰਕੇ (ਸਾਡੇ) ਸਨਬੰਧੀ ਹਨ, ਇਹਨਾਂ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹੈ।
Do not worry about your spouse, children and friends. You are obsessed with your involvements in Maya.
ਦਇਆਲਏਕਭਗਵਾਨਪੁਰਖਹਨਾਨਕਸਰਬਜੀਅਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲਕਹ॥੧੫॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਪਾਲਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਦਇਆ ਦਾ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਇਕ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਹੀ ਹੈ ॥੧੫॥
The One Lord God is Kind and Compassionate, O Nanak. He is the Cherisher and Nurturer of all living beings. ||15||
ਅਨਿਤੵਵਿਤੰਅਨਿਤੵਚਿਤੰਅਨਿਤੵਆਸਾਬਹੁਬਿਧਿਪ੍ਰਕਾਰੰ॥
ਧਨ ਨਿੱਤ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ, (ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਧਨ ਦੀਆਂ) ਸੋਚਾਂ ਵਿਅਰਥ (ਉੱਦਮ) ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਧਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਕਈ ਕਿਸਮ ਦੀਆਂ ਆਸਾਂ (ਬਣਾਣੀਆਂ ਭੀ) ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹੈ।
Wealth is temporary; conscious existence is temporary; hopes of all sorts are temporary.
ਅਨਿਤੵਹੇਤੰਅਹੰਬੰਧੰਭਰਮਮਾਇਆਮਲਨੰਬਿਕਾਰੰ॥
ਨਿੱਤ ਨਾਹ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਹਉਮੈ ਦਾ ਬੱਧਾ ਜੀਵ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਭਟਕਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ, ਮੈਲੇ ਮੰਦੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
The bonds of love, attachment, egotism, doubt, Maya and the pollution of corruption are temporary.
ਫਿਰੰਤਜੋਨਿਅਨੇਕਜਠਰਾਗਨਿਨਹਸਿਮਰੰਤਮਲੀਣਬੁਧੵੰ॥
ਮੈਲੀ ਮੱਤ ਵਾਲਾ ਬੰਦਾ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਭੌਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ (ਮਾਂ ਦੇ) ਪੇਟ ਦੀ ਅੱਗ ਨੂੰ ਚੇਤੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਰੱਖਦਾ (ਜੋ ਜੂਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਂ ਸਹਾਰਨੀ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ)।
The mortal passes through the fire of the womb of reincarnation countless times. He does not remember the Lord in meditation; his understanding is polluted.
ਹੇਗੋਬਿੰਦਕਰਤਮਇਆਨਾਨਕਪਤਿਤਉਧਾਰਣਸਾਧਸੰਗਮਹ॥੧੬॥
ਨਾਨਕ (ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ) ਹੇ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ! ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰ, ਤੇ ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ ਜਿਥੇ ਵਡੇ ਵਿਕਰਮੀ ਵੀ ਬਚ ਨਿਕਲਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧੬॥
O Lord of the Universe, when You grant Your Grace, even sinners are saved. Nanak dwells in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy. ||16||
ਗਿਰੰਤਗਿਰਿਪਤਿਤਪਾਤਾਲੰਜਲੰਤਦੇਦੀਪੵਬੈਸ੍ਵਾਂਤਰਹ॥
ਪਹਾੜ ਤੋਂ ਡਿੱਗ ਕੇ ਪਾਤਾਲ ਵਿਚ ਜਾ ਪੈਣਾ, ਭੜਕਦੀ ਅੱਗ ਵਿਚ ਸੜਨਾ,
You may drop down from the mountains, and fall into the nether regions of the underworld, or be burnt in the blazing fire,
ਬਹੰਤਿਅਗਾਹਤੋਯੰਤਰੰਗੰਦੁਖੰਤਗ੍ਰਹਚਿੰਤਾਜਨਮੰਤਮਰਣਹ॥
ਡੂੰਘੇ ਪਾਣੀਆਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਠਿੱਲਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਰੁੜ੍ਹ ਜਾਣਾ- ਘਰ ਦੀ ਚਿੰਤਾ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ) ਅਤੇ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਦੁੱਖਾਂ ਤੋਂ (ਬਚਣ ਲਈ)
or swept away by the unfathomable waves of water; but the worst pain of all is household anxiety, which is the source of the cycle of death and rebirth.
ਅਨਿਕਸਾਧਨੰਨਸਿਧੵਤੇਨਾਨਕਅਸਥੰਭੰਅਸਥੰਭੰਅਸਥੰਭੰਸਬਦਸਾਧਸ੍ਵਜਨਹ॥੧੭॥
ਅਜੇਹੇ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ (ਕਠਨ) ਸਾਧਨ, ਸਫਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੇ। ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਸਦਾ ਲਈ ਜੀਵ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਗੁਰ-ਸ਼ਬਦ ਹੀ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੭॥
No matter what you do, you cannot break its bonds, O Nanak. Man's only Support, Anchor and Mainstay is the Word of the Shabad, and the Holy, Friendly Saints. ||17||
ਘੋਰਦੁਖੵੰਅਨਿਕਹਤੵੰਜਨਮਦਾਰਿਦ੍ਰੰਮਹਾਬਿਖੵਾਦੰ॥
ਭਿਆਨਕ ਦੁੱਖ-ਕੇਲਸ਼, (ਕੀਤੇ ਹੋਏ) ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਖ਼ੂਨ, ਜਨਮਾਂ ਜਨਮਾਂਤਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਗ਼ਰੀਬੀ, ਵੱਡੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਪੁਆੜੇ-ਇਹ ਸਾਰੇ,
Excruciating pain, countless killings, reincarnation, poverty and terrible misery
ਮਿਟੰਤਸਗਲਸਿਮਰੰਤਹਰਿਨਾਮਨਾਨਕਜੈਸੇਪਾਵਕਕਾਸਟਭਸਮੰਕਰੋਤਿ॥੧੮॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿਆਂ ਮਿਟ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜਿਵੇਂ ਅੱਗ ਲੱਕੜਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਆਹ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੧੮॥
are all destroyed by meditating in remembrance on the Lord's Name, O Nanak, just as fire reduces piles of wood to ashes. ||18||
ਅੰਧਕਾਰਸਿਮਰਤਪ੍ਰਕਾਸੰਗੁਣਰਮੰਤਅਘਖੰਡਨਹ॥
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿਆਂ (ਅਗਿਆਨਤਾ ਦਾ) ਹਨੇਰਾ (ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਕੇ) (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਦਾ) ਚਾਨਣ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਚੇਤੇ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਪਾਪਾਂ ਦਾ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
Meditating in remembrance on the Lord, the darkness is illuminated. Dwelling on His Glorious Praises, the ugly sins are destroyed.
ਰਿਦਬਸੰਤਿਭੈਭੀਤਦੂਤਹਕਰਮਕਰਤਮਹਾਨਿਰਮਲਹ॥
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸਿਆਂ ਜਮਦੂਤ ਭੀ ਡਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਬੜੇ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
Enshrining the Lord deep within the heart, and with the immaculate karma of doing good deeds, one strikes fear into the demons.
ਜਨਮਮਰਣਰਹੰਤਸ੍ਰੋਤਾਸੁਖਸਮੂਹਅਮੋਘਦਰਸਨਹ॥
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਸੁਣਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ (ਦਾ ਗੇੜ) ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਦੀਦਾਰ ਫਲ ਦੇਣ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ, ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਸੁਖ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
The cycle of coming and going in reincarnation is ended, absolute peace is obtained, and the Fruitful Vision of the Lord's Darshan.
ਸਰਣਿਜੋਗੰਸੰਤਪ੍ਰਿਅਨਾਨਕਸੋਭਗਵਾਨਖੇਮੰਕਰੋਤਿ॥੧੯॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਜੋ ਸੰਤਾਂ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਸਰਨ ਆਇਆਂ ਦੀ ਸਹੈਤਾ ਕਰਨ ਦੇ ਸਮਰੱਥ ਹੈ (ਭਗਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਭ) ਸੁਖ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੯॥
He is Potent to give Protection, He is the Lover of His Saints. O Nanak, the Lord God blesses all with bliss. ||19||
ਪਾਛੰਕਰੋਤਿਅਗ੍ਰਣੀਵਹਨਿਰਾਸੰਆਸਪੂਰਨਹ॥
ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਗੂ ਬਣਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਨਿਰਾਸਿਆਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਆਸਾਂ ਪੂਰੀਆਂ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
Those who were left behind - the Lord brings them to the front. He fulfills the hopes of the hopeless.
ਨਿਰਧਨਭਯੰਧਨਵੰਤਹਰੋਗੀਅੰਰੋਗਖੰਡਨਹ॥
(ਉਸ ਦੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਨਾਲ) ਕੰਗਾਲ ਧਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਮਾਲਕ ਰੋਗੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਰੋਗ ਨਾਸ ਕਰਨ-ਜੋਗ ਹੈ।
He makes the poor rich, and cures the illnesses of the ill.
ਭਗਤੵੰਭਗਤਿਦਾਨੰਰਾਮਨਾਮਗੁਣਕੀਰਤਨਹ॥
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪਣੇ ਭਗਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਨਾਮ ਅਤੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਦਾਤ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
He blesses His devotees with devotion. They sing the Kirtan of the Praises of the Lord's Name.
ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮਪੁਰਖਦਾਤਾਰਹਨਾਨਕਗੁਰਸੇਵਾਕਿੰਨਲਭੵਤੇ॥੨੦॥
ਸਰਬ-ਵਿਆਪਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸਭ ਦਾਤਾਂ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਉਸ ਪਾਸੋਂ) ਕੀਹ ਕੁਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ? ॥੨੦॥
O Nanak, those who serve the Guru find the Supreme Lord God, the Great Giver||20||
ਅਧਰੰਧਰੰਧਾਰਣਹਨਿਰਧਨੰਧਨਨਾਮਨਰਹਰਹ॥
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਿਆਸਰਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਸਰਾ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਧਨ-ਹੀਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਧਨ ਹੈ।
He gives Support to the unsupported. The Name of the Lord is the Wealth of the poor.
ਅਨਾਥਨਾਥਗੋਬਿੰਦਹਬਲਹੀਣਬਲਕੇਸਵਹ॥
ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਅਨਾਥਾਂ ਦਾ ਨਾਥ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਕੇਸ਼ਵ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਿਤਾਣਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਤਾਣ ਹੈ।
The Lord of the Universe is the Master of the masterless; the Beautiful-haired Lord is the Power of the weak.
ਸਰਬਭੂਤਦਯਾਲਅਚੁਤਦੀਨਬਾਂਧਵਦਾਮੋਦਰਹ॥
ਅਬਿਨਾਸ਼ੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਦਇਆ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਕੰਗਾਲਾਂ ਦਾ ਬੰਧੂ ਹੈ।
The Lord is Merciful to all beings, Eternal and Unchanging, the Family of the meek and humble.
