ਲਿਖਿਆਪਲੈਪਾਇਸੋਸਚੁਜਾਣੀਐ॥
ਤਾਂ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਸੱਚੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝ ਬਣਾਈਏ, ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ (ਨਾਮ-ਸਿਮਰਨ-ਰੂਪ) ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ (ਲੇਖ) ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
One whose pre-ordained destiny is activated, comes to know the True Lord.
ਹੁਕਮੀਹੋਇਨਿਬੇੜੁਗਇਆਜਾਣੀਐ॥
ਇਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਨਿਰਨਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਇਸ ਦੀ ਸਮਝ (ਇਥੋਂ ਜਗਤ ਤੋਂ) ਤੁਰਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
By God's Command, it is ordained. When the mortal goes, he knows.
ਭਉਜਲਤਾਰਣਹਾਰੁਸਬਦਿਪਛਾਣੀਐ॥
(ਸੋ,) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾਣੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾਣ ਦੇ ਸਮਰਥ ਹੈ।
Realize the Word of the Shabad, and cross over the terrifying world-ocean.
ਚੋਰਜਾਰਜੂਆਰਪੀੜੇਘਾਣੀਐ॥
ਚੋਰਾਂ ਵਿਭਚਾਰੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਜੂਏ-ਬਾਜ਼ (ਆਦਿਕ ਵਿਕਾਰੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਇਉਂ ਹਾਲ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਵੇਂ) ਕੋਲ੍ਹੂ ਵਿਚ ਪੀੜੇ ਜਾ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ;
Thieves, adulterers and gamblers are pressed like seeds in the mill.
ਨਿੰਦਕਲਾਇਤਬਾਰਮਿਲੇਹੜੑਵਾਣੀਐ॥
ਨਿੰਦਕਾਂ ਤੇ ਚੁਗ਼ਲਖ਼ੋਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਮਾਨੋ, ਨਿੰਦਾ ਤੇ ਚੁਗ਼ਲੀ ਦੀ) ਹਥਕੜੀ ਵੱਜੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਇਸ ਭੈੜੀ ਵਾਦੀ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਕੱਢ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦੇ)।
Slanderers and gossipers are hand-cuffed.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਸਚਿਸਮਾਇਸੁਦਰਗਹਜਾਣੀਐ॥੨੧॥
ਪਰ ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਆਦਰ ਪਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੨੧॥
The Gurmukh is absorbed in the True Lord, and is famous in the Court of the Lord. ||21||

Shalok, Second Mahalaa:
ਨਾਉਫਕੀਰੈਪਾਤਿਸਾਹੁਮੂਰਖਪੰਡਿਤੁਨਾਉ॥
ਕੰਗਾਲ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਬਾਦਸ਼ਾਹ (ਰੱਖਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ), ਮੂਰਖ ਦਾ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਨਾਮ (ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ),
The beggar is known as an emperor, and the fool is known as a religious scholar.
ਅੰਧੇਕਾਨਾਉਪਾਰਖੂਏਵੈਕਰੇਗੁਆਉ॥
ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਨੂੰ ਪਾਰਖੂ (ਆਖਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ)-(ਬੱਸ! ਜਗਤ) ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ (ਉਲਟੀਆਂ) ਗੱਲਾਂ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
The blind man is known as a seer; this is how people talk.
ਇਲਤਿਕਾਨਾਉਚਉਧਰੀਕੂੜੀਪੂਰੇਥਾਉ॥
ਸ਼ਰਾਰਤਿ (ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ) ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਚੌਧਰੀ (ਪੈ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ) ਤੇ ਝੂਠੀ ਜ਼ਨਾਨੀ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਅੱਗੇ ਥਾਂ ਮੱਲਦੀ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨ ਬਣਦੀ ਹੈ)।
The trouble-maker is called a leader, and the liar is seated with honor.
ਨਾਨਕਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਜਾਣੀਐਕਲਿਕਾਏਹੁਨਿਆਉ॥੧॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਇਹ ਹੈ ਨਿਆਂ ਕਲਿਜੁਗ ਦਾ (ਭਾਵ, ਜਿੱਥੇ ਇਹ ਰਵਈਆ ਵਰਤੀਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਓਥੇ ਕਲਿਜੁਗ ਦਾ ਪਹਰਾ ਜਾਣੋ)। ਪਰ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੋਇਆਂ ਹੀ ਇਹ ਸਮਝ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ (ਕਿ ਇਹ ਵਤੀਰਾ ਮਾੜਾ ਹੈ। ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਲੋਕ ਇਸ ਰਵਈਏ ਦੇ ਆਦੀ ਹੋਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ) ॥੧॥
O Nanak, the Gurmukhs know that this is justice in the Dark Age of Kali Yuga. ||1||

First Mahalaa:
ਹਰਣਾਂਬਾਜਾਂਤੈਸਿਕਦਾਰਾਂਏਨੑਾਪੜਿੑਆਨਾਉ॥
ਹਰਨ, ਬਾਜ਼ ਤੇ ਅਹਲਕਾਰ-ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਲੋਕ "ਪੜ੍ਹੇ ਹੋਏ" ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ,
Deer, falcons and government officials are known to be trained and clever.
ਫਾਂਧੀਲਗੀਜਾਤਿਫਹਾਇਨਿਅਗੈਨਾਹੀਥਾਉ॥
(ਪਰ ਇਹ ਵਿੱਦਿਆ ਕਾਹਦੀ ਹੈ? ਇਹ ਤਾਂ) ਫਾਹੀ ਲੱਗੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣੇ ਹੀ ਜਾਤਿ-ਭਰਾਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਫਸਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ; ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਐਸੇ ਪੜ੍ਹੇ ਹੋਏ ਕਬੂਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਨ।
When the trap is set, they trap their own kind; hereafter they will find no place of rest.
ਸੋਪੜਿਆਸੋਪੰਡਿਤੁਬੀਨਾਜਿਨੑੀਕਮਾਣਾਨਾਉ॥
ਜਿਸ ਜਿਸ ਨੇ 'ਨਾਮ' ਦੀ ਕਮਾਈ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ ਉਹੀ ਵਿਦਵਾਨ ਹੈ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਸਿਆਣਾ ਹੈ,
He alone is learned and wise, and he alone is a scholar, who practices the Name.
ਪਹਿਲੋਦੇਜੜਅੰਦਰਿਜੰਮੈਤਾਉਪਰਿਹੋਵੈਛਾਂਉ॥
(ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਰੁੱਖ ਦੀ) ਜੜ੍ਹ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ (ਜ਼ਮੀਨ ਦੇ) ਅੰਦਰ ਜੰਮਦੀ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਹੀ (ਰੁੱਖ ਉੱਗ ਕੇ) ਬਾਹਰ ਛਾਂ ਬਣਦੀ ਹੈ (ਸੋ, ਸੁਖਦਾਤੀ ਵਿੱਦਿਆ ਉਹੀ ਹੈ ਜੇ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ 'ਨਾਮ' ਬੀਜੇ)।
First, the tree puts down its roots, and then it spreads out its shade above.
ਰਾਜੇਸੀਹਮੁਕਦਮਕੁਤੇ॥
('ਨਾਮ' ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣੀ ਵਿੱਦਿਆ ਦਾ ਹਾਲ ਤੱਕੋ), ਰਾਜੇ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਸ਼ੇਰ ਹਨ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ, ਪੜ੍ਹੇ ਹੋਏ) ਅਹਲਕਾਰ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਕੁੱਤੇ ਹਨ,
The kings are tigers, and their officials are dogs;
ਜਾਇਜਗਾਇਨਿੑਬੈਠੇਸੁਤੇ॥
ਬੈਠੇ-ਸੁੱਤੇ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ (ਭਾਵ, ਵੇਲੇ ਕੁਵੇਲੇ) ਜਾ ਜਗਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ (ਭਾਵ, ਤੰਗ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ)।
they go out and awaken the sleeping people to harass them.
ਚਾਕਰਨਹਦਾਪਾਇਨਿੑਘਾਉ॥
ਇਹ ਅਹਲਕਾਰ (ਮਾਨੋ ਸ਼ੇਰਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ) ਨਹੁੰਦ੍ਰਾਂ ਹਨ, ਜੋ (ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦਾ) ਘਾਤ ਕਰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ,
The public servants inflict wounds with their nails.
ਰਤੁਪਿਤੁਕੁਤਿਹੋਚਟਿਜਾਹੁ॥
(ਰਾਜੇ-ਸ਼ੀਂਹ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਮੁਕੱਦਮ) ਕੁੱਤਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦਾ) ਲਹੂ ਪੀਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
The dogs lick up the blood that is spilled.
ਜਿਥੈਜੀਆਂਹੋਸੀਸਾਰ॥
ਪਰ ਜਿੱਥੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੀ (ਕਰਣੀ ਦੀ) ਪਰਖ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ,
But there, in the Court of the Lord, all beings will be judged.
ਨਕਂੀਵਢਂੀਲਾਇਤਬਾਰ॥੨॥
ਓਥੇ ਅਜੇਹੇ (ਪੜ੍ਹੇ ਹੋਏ ਬੰਦੇ) ਬੇ-ਇਤਬਾਰੇ ਨੱਕ-ਵੱਢੇ (ਸਮਝੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ) ॥੨॥
Those who have violated the people's trust will be disgraced; their noses will be cut off. ||2||
ਪਉੜੀ॥
Pauree:
ਆਪਿਉਪਾਏਮੇਦਨੀਆਪੇਕਰਦਾਸਾਰ॥
(ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ) ਆਪ ਜਗਤ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਇਸ ਦੀ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
He Himself creates the world, and He himself takes care of it.
ਭੈਬਿਨੁਭਰਮੁਨਕਟੀਐਨਾਮਿਨਲਗੈਪਿਆਰੁ॥
(ਉਸ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਰੱਖਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਮਾਇਆ ਪਿੱਛੇ) ਭਟਕਣ (-ਰੂਪ ਬੰਧਨ) ਕੱਟਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦਾ, ਨਾਹ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਰ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ।
Without the Fear of God, doubt is not dispelled, and love for the Name is not embraced.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਤੇਭਉਊਪਜੈਪਾਈਐਮੋਖਦੁਆਰ॥
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਣ ਪਿਆਂ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ('ਰਬਾਣੀ ਬੰਦ' ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਦਾ ਰਸਤਾ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ,
Through the True Guru, the Fear of God wells up, and the Door of Salvation is found.
ਭੈਤੇਸਹਜੁਪਾਈਐਮਿਲਿਜੋਤੀਜੋਤਿਅਪਾਰ॥
(ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ) ਡਰ ਰੱਖਿਆਂ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲਿਆਂ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
Through the Fear of God, intuitive ease is obtained, and one's light merges into the Light of the Infinite.
ਭੈਤੇਭੈਜਲੁਲੰਘੀਐਗੁਰਮਤੀਵੀਚਾਰੁ॥
ਇਸ ਡਰ ਕਰਕੇ ਹੀ ਗੁਰਮੱਤ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਉੱਚੀ) ਵੀਚਾਰ ਬਣਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤੇ, ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘੀਦਾ ਹੈ,
Through the Fear of God, the terrifying world-ocean is crossed over, reflecting on the Guru's Teachings.
ਭੈਤੇਨਿਰਭਉਪਾਈਐਜਿਸਦਾਅੰਤੁਨਪਾਰਾਵਾਰੁ॥
ਇਸ ਡਰ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ ਡਰ-ਰਹਿਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਅੰਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਪਾਰਲਾ ਉਰਲਾ ਬੰਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਭਦਾ।
Through the Fear of God, the Fearless Lord is found; He has no end or limitation.
ਮਨਮੁਖਭੈਕੀਸਾਰਨਜਾਣਨੀਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾਜਲਤੇਕਰਹਿਪੁਕਾਰ॥
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਡਰ (ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿਣ ਦੀ) ਸਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦੀ (ਸਿੱਟਾ ਇਹ ਨਿਕਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ) ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ (-ਅੱਗ) ਵਿਚ ਸੜਦੇ ਵਿਲਕਦੇ ਹਨ।
The self-willed manmukhs do not appreciate the value of the Fear of God. Burning in desire, they weep and wail.
ਨਾਨਕਨਾਵੈਹੀਤੇਸੁਖੁਪਾਇਆਗੁਰਮਤੀਉਰਿਧਾਰ॥੨੨॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ 'ਨਾਮ' ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਸੁਖ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ (ਇਹ 'ਨਾਮ') ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮੱਤ ਉਤੇ ਤੁਰਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨੨॥
O Nanak, through the Name, peace is obtained, by enshrining the Guru's Teachings within the heart. ||22||
ਸਲੋਕਮਃ੧॥
Shalok, First Mahalaa:
ਰੂਪੈਕਾਮੈਦੋਸਤੀਭੁਖੈਸਾਦੈਗੰਢੁ॥
ਰੂਪ ਦੀ ਕਾਮ (-ਵਾਸਨਾ) ਨਾਲ ਮਿੱਤ੍ਰਤਾ ਹੈ, ਭੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਸੁਆਦ ਨਾਲ ਸੰਬੰਧ ਹੈ।
Beauty and sexual desire are friends; hunger and tasty food are tied together.
ਲਬੈਮਾਲੈਘੁਲਿਮਿਲਿਮਿਚਲਿਊਂਘੈਸਉੜਿਪਲੰਘੁ॥
ਲੱਬ ਦੀ ਧਨ ਨਾਲ ਚੰਗੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਿਲਵੀਂ ਇਕ-ਮਿਕਤਾ ਹੈ (ਨੀਂਦਰ ਨਾਲ) ਊਂਘ ਰਹੇ ਨੂੰ ਸਉੜੀ ਥਾਂ ਹੀ ਪਲੰਘ ਹੈ।
Greed is bound up in its search for wealth, and sleep will use even a tiny space as a bed.
ਭੰਉਕੈਕੋਪੁਖੁਆਰੁਹੋਇਫਕੜੁਪਿਟੇਅੰਧੁ॥
ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਬਹੁਤ ਬੋਲਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਵਿਚ) ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ (ਹੋਇਆ ਬੰਦਾ) ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਬਦ-ਜ਼ਬਾਨੀ ਹੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
Anger barks and brings ruin on itself, blindly pursuing useless conflicts.
ਚੁਪੈਚੰਗਾਨਾਨਕਾਵਿਣੁਨਾਵੈਮੁਹਿਗੰਧੁ॥੧॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ) ਮੂੰਹ ਵਿਚ (ਬਦ-ਕਲਾਮੀ ਦੀ) ਬੋ ਹੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ (ਬੋਲਣ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਇਸ ਦਾ) ਚੁੱਪ ਰਹਿਣਾ ਚੰਗਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
It is good to be silent, O Nanak; without the Name, one's mouth spews forth only filth. ||1||

ਰਾਜੁਮਾਲੁਰੂਪੁਜਾਤਿਜੋਬਨੁਪੰਜੇਠਗ॥
ਰਾਜ, ਧਨ, ਸੁੰਦਰਤਾ, (ਉੱਚੀ) ਜਾਤਿ, ਤੇ ਜੁਆਨੀ-ਇਹ ਪੰਜੇ ਹੀ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਠੱਗ ਹਨ,
Royal power, wealth, beauty, social status and youth are the five thieves.
ਏਨੀਠਗੀਂਜਗੁਠਗਿਆਕਿਨੈਨਰਖੀਲਜ॥
ਇਹਨਾਂ ਠੱਗਾਂ ਨੇ ਜਗਤ ਨੂੰ ਠੱਗ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ (ਜੋ ਭੀ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੱਡੇ ਚੜ੍ਹਿਆ) ਕਿਸੇ ਨੇ (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਆਪਣੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਚਾਈ।
These thieves have plundered the world; no one's honor has been spared.
ਏਨਾਠਗਨਿੑਠਗਸੇਜਿਗੁਰਕੀਪੈਰੀਪਾਹਿ॥
ਇਹਨਾਂ (ਠੱਗਾਂ) ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਉਹ ਠੱਗ (ਭਾਵ, ਸਿਆਣੇ ਬੰਦੇ) ਦਾਉ ਲਾ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ (ਭਾਵ, ਉਹ ਬੰਦੇ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਚਾਲ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦੇ) ਜੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਆਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
But these thieves themselves are robbed, by those who fall at the Guru's Feet.
ਨਾਨਕਕਰਮਾਬਾਹਰੇਹੋਰਿਕੇਤੇਮੁਠੇਜਾਹਿ॥੨॥
(ਪਰ) ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਹੋਰ ਬੜੇ ਭਾਗ-ਹੀਣ (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਢਹੇ ਚੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ) ਲੁੱਟੇ ਜਾ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ ॥੨॥
O Nanak, the multitudes who do not have good karma are plundered. ||2||

ਜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਵਿਦਵਾਨ ਭੀ ਹੋਵੇ ਤੇ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਭੀ ਕਰਨਾ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੋਵੇ ('ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ' ਬਾਰੇ) ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਭੀ ਲੇਖਾ ਲਈਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, 'ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ' ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਭੀ ਲੇਖਾ ਲੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਨਿਰੀ ਵਿੱਦਿਆ ਤੇ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ 'ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ' ਤੋਂ ਬਚਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦੀ),
The learned and educated are called to account for their actions.
ਵਿਣੁਨਾਵੈਕੂੜਿਆਰੁਅਉਖਾਤੰਗੀਐ॥
(ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਪੜ੍ਹਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਭੀ) ਕੂੜ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਵਪਾਰੀ ਹੈ; ਔਖਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਔਖਿਆਈ ਹੀ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
Without the Name, they are judged false; they become miserable and suffer hardship.
ਅਉਘਟਰੁਧੇਰਾਹਗਲੀਆਂਰੋਕੀਆਂ॥
ਉਸ ਦੇ (ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੇ) ਗਲੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਰਸਤੇ (ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦੀ ਅੱਗ ਨਾਲ) ਰੁਕੇ ਪਏ ਹਨ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਦੀ ਲੰਘਣਾ) ਔਖਾ ਹੈ।
Their path becomes treacherous and difficult, and their way is blocked.
ਸਚਾਵੇਪਰਵਾਹੁਸਬਦਿਸੰਤੋਖੀਆਂ॥
ਗੁਰ-ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਸੰਤੋਖੀ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਬੇ-ਮੁਥਾਜ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
Through the Shabad, the Word of the True and Independent Lord God, one becomes content.
ਗਹਿਰਗਭੀਰਅਥਾਹੁਹਾਥਨਲਭਈ॥
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਬੜਾ ਡੂੰਘਾ (ਸਮੁੰਦਰ) ਹੈ, (ਵਿੱਦਿਆ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ਦੇ ਆਸਰੇ) ਉਸ ਦੀ ਥਾਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈ ਸਕਦੀ।
The Lord is deep and profound and unfathomable; His depth cannot be measured.
ਮੁਹੇਮੁਹਿਚੋਟਾਖਾਹੁਵਿਣੁਗੁਰਕੋਇਨਛੁਟਸੀ॥
(ਸਗੋਂ 'ਪੜ੍ਹਿਆ ਕੂੜਿਆਰੁ' ਵਿੱਦਿਆ ਦੇ ਮਾਣ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦੀਆਂ) ਚੋਟਾਂ ਦਬਾਦਬ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ; (ਪਿਆ ਪੜ੍ਹਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੋਵੇ) ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ (ਦੀ ਸਰਨ) ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਤੋਂ) ਬੱਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ।
Without the Guru, the mortals are beaten and punched in the face and the mouth, and no one is released.
ਪਤਿਸੇਤੀਘਰਿਜਾਹੁਨਾਮੁਵਖਾਣੀਐ॥
(ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ) ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ (ਜੇ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰੀਏ) ਤਾਂ ਬੇਸ਼ਕ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਅੱਪੜੋ।
Chanting the Naam, the Name of the Lord, one returns to his true home with honor.
ਹੁਕਮੀਸਾਹਗਿਰਾਹਦੇਂਦਾਜਾਣੀਐ॥੨੩॥
(ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ) ਇਹ ਨਿਸਚਾ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪਣੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਜੀਵਨ ਤੇ ਰੋਜ਼ੀ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨੩॥
Know that the Lord, by the Hukam of His Command, gives sustenance and the breath of life. ||23||
