ਬਾਝੁਗੁਰੂਗੁਬਾਰਾ॥
ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ) ਹਨੇਰਾ (ਹੀ ਹਨੇਰਾ) ਹੈ।
Without the Guru, there is only pitch darkness.
ਮਿਲਿਸਤਿਗੁਰਨਿਸਤਾਰਾ॥੨॥
ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ (ਹੀ ਇਸ ਹਨੇਰੇ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘੀਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
Meeting with the True Guru, one is emancipated. ||2||
ਹਉਹਉਕਰਮਕਮਾਣੇ॥
ਹਉਮੈ ਦੇ ਆਸਰੇ ਜੀਵ (ਅਨੇਕਾਂ) ਕਰਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ,
All the deeds done in egotism,
ਤੇਤੇਬੰਧਗਲਾਣੇ॥
ਉਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਕਰਮ (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ) ਗਲ ਵਿਚ ਫਾਹੀਆਂ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
are just chains around the neck.
ਮੇਰੀਮੇਰੀਧਾਰੀ॥
ਜੀਵ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਮਮਤਾ ਵਸਾਈ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ,
Harboring self-conceit and self-interest
ਓਹਾਪੈਰਿਲੋਹਾਰੀ॥
ਉਹ ਮਮਤਾ ਹੀ ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਪੈਰ ਵਿਚ ਲੋਹੇ ਦੀ ਬੇੜੀ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
is just like placing chains around one's ankles.
ਸੋਗੁਰਮਿਲਿਏਕੁਪਛਾਣੈ॥
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
He alone meets with the Guru, and realizes the One Lord,
ਜਿਸੁਹੋਵੈਭਾਗੁਮਥਾਣੈ॥੩॥
ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਉਤੇ ਭਾਗ ਜਾਗ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
who has such destiny written on his forehead. ||3||
ਸੋਮਿਲਿਆਜਿਹਰਿਮਨਿਭਾਇਆ॥
ਉਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਹੜਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ;
He alone meets the Lord, who is pleasing to His Mind.
ਸੋਭੂਲਾਜਿਪ੍ਰਭੂਭੁਲਾਇਆ॥
ਉਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
He alone is deluded, who is deluded by God.
ਨਹਆਪਹੁਮੂਰਖੁਗਿਆਨੀ॥
ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਤੋਂ ਨਾਹ ਕੋਈ ਮੂਰਖ ਹੈ ਨਾਹ ਕੋਈ ਸਿਆਣਾ ਹੈ।
No one, by himself, is ignorant or wise.
ਜਿਕਰਾਵੈਸੁਨਾਮੁਵਖਾਨੀ॥
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਜੀਵ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਕਰਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਮੂਰਖ ਜਾਂ ਗਿਆਨੀ) ਪੈ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
He alone chants the Naam, whom the Lord inspires to do so.
ਤੇਰਾਅੰਤੁਨਪਾਰਾਵਾਰਾ॥
ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਅੰਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈ ਸਕਦਾ, ਤੇਰੀ ਹਸਤੀ ਦਾ ਉਰਲਾ ਪਾਰਲਾ ਬੰਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਭ ਸਕਦਾ।
You have no end or limitation.
ਜਨਨਾਨਕਸਦਬਲਿਹਾਰਾ॥੪॥੧॥੧੭॥
ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ ਤੈਥੋਂ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਕੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੧॥੧੭॥
Servant Nanak is forever a sacrifice to You. ||4||1||17||
ਮਾਰੂਮਹਲਾ੫॥
Maaroo, Fifth Mahalaa:
ਮੋਹਨੀਮੋਹਿਲੀਏਤ੍ਰੈਗੁਨੀਆ॥
(ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੋਈ) ਮੋਹਨੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਤ੍ਰਿ-ਗੁਣੀ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ,
Maya, the enticer, has enticed the world of the three gunas, the three qualities.
ਲੋਭਿਵਿਆਪੀਝੂਠੀਦੁਨੀਆ॥
ਸਾਰੀ ਲੁਕਾਈ ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਲੋਭ ਵਿਚ ਫਸੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ।
The false world is engrossed in greed.
ਮੇਰੀਮੇਰੀਕਰਿਕੈਸੰਚੀਅੰਤਕੀਬਾਰਸਗਲਲੇਛਲੀਆ॥੧॥
ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵ (ਇਸ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ) ਮਮਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਕੇ (ਇਸ ਨੂੰ) ਇਕੱਠੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਅਖ਼ੀਰਲੇ ਵੇਲੇ ਇਹ ਸਭ ਨੂੰ ਧੋਖਾ ਦੇ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
Crying out, "Mine, mine!" they collect possessions, but in the end, they are all deceived. ||1||
ਨਿਰਭਉਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੁਦਇਅਲੀਆ॥
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਡਰ-ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਖ਼ਾਸ ਸਰੂਪ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ, ਜੋ ਦਇਆ ਦਾ ਘਰ ਹੈ,
The Lord is fearless, formless and merciful.
ਜੀਅਜੰਤਸਗਲੇਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਲੀਆ॥੧॥ਰਹਾਉ॥
ਉਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਪਾਲਣਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
He is the Cherisher of all beings and creatures. ||1||Pause||
ਏਕੈਸ੍ਰਮੁਕਰਿਗਾਡੀਗਡਹੈ॥
ਕੋਈ ਤਾਂ ਐਸਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਬੜੀ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਨਾਲ ਕਮਾ ਕੇ ਧਰਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਦੱਬ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ;
Some collect wealth, and bury it in the ground.
ਏਕਹਿਸੁਪਨੈਦਾਮੁਨਛਡਹੈ॥
ਕੋਈ ਐਸਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਸੁਪਨੇ ਵਿਚ (ਭੀ, ਭਾਵ, ਕਦੇ ਭੀ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ) ਹੱਥੋਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਛੱਡਦਾ।
Some cannot abandon wealth, even in their dreams.
ਰਾਜੁਕਮਾਇਕਰੀਜਿਨਿਥੈਲੀਤਾਕੈਸੰਗਿਨਚੰਚਲਿਚਲੀਆ॥੨॥
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਹਕੂਮਤ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਜੋੜ ਲਿਆ; ਇਹ ਕਦੇ ਇੱਕ ਥਾਂ ਨਾਹ ਟਿਕਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦੀ ॥੨॥
The king exercises his power, and fills his money-bags, but this fickle companion will not go along with him. ||2||
ਏਕਹਿਪ੍ਰਾਣਪਿੰਡਤੇਪਿਆਰੀ॥
ਕੋਈ ਅਜਿਹਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਜਿੰਦ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਸਰੀਰ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਭੀ ਵਧੀਕ ਪਿਆਰੀ ਲੱਗਦੀ ਹੈ।
Some love this wealth even more than their body and breath of life.
ਏਕਸੰਚੀਤਜਿਬਾਪਮਹਤਾਰੀ॥
ਕੋਈ ਐਸਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਮਾਪਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਸਾਥ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਇਕੱਠੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ;
Some collect it, forsaking their fathers and mothers.
ਸੁਤਮੀਤਭ੍ਰਾਤਤੇਗੁਹਜੀਤਾਕੈਨਿਕਟਿਨਹੋਈਖਲੀਆ॥੩॥
ਪੁੱਤਰਾਂ ਮਿੱਤਰਾਂ ਭਰਾਵਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਲੁਕਾ ਕੇ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਇਹ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਕੋਲ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਖਲੋਂਦੀ ॥੩॥
Some hide it from their children, friends and siblings, but it will not remain with them. ||3||
ਹੋਇਅਉਧੂਤਬੈਠੇਲਾਇਤਾਰੀ॥
ਕਈ ਐਸੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਤਿਆਗੀ ਬਣ ਕੇ ਸਮਾਧੀ ਲਾ ਕੇ ਬੈਠਦੇ ਹਨ;
Some become hermits, and sit in meditative trances.
ਜੋਗੀਜਤੀਪੰਡਿਤਬੀਚਾਰੀ॥
ਕਈ ਜੋਗੀ ਹਨ ਜਤੀ ਹਨ ਸਿਆਣੇ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਹਨ;
Some are Yogis, celibates, religious scholars and thinkers.
ਗ੍ਰਿਹਿਮੜੀਮਸਾਣੀਬਨਮਹਿਬਸਤੇਊਠਿਤਿਨਾਕੈਲਾਗੀਪਲੀਆ॥੪॥
(ਪੰਡਿਤ) ਘਰ ਵਿਚ, (ਤਿਆਗੀ) ਮੜ੍ਹੀਆਂ ਮਸਾਣਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੰਗਲਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਇਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਉੱਠ ਕੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਚੰਬੜ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
Some dwell in homes, graveyards, cremation grounds and forests; but Maya still clings to them there. ||4||
ਕਾਟੇਬੰਧਨਠਾਕੁਰਿਜਾਕੇ॥
ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ) ਬੰਧਨ ਕੱਟ ਦਿੱਤੇ,
When the Lord and Master releases one from his bonds,
ਹਰਿਹਰਿਨਾਮੁਬਸਿਓਜੀਅਤਾਕੈ॥
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਦਾ ਲਈ ਆ ਟਿਕਿਆ,
the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, comes to dwell in his soul.
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿਭਏਜਨਮੁਕਤੇਗਤਿਪਾਈਨਾਨਕਨਦਰਿਨਿਹਲੀਆ॥੫॥੨॥੧੮॥
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੀਆਂ ਫਾਹੀਆਂ ਤੋਂ) ਆਜ਼ਾਦ ਹੋ ਗਏ। ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਵਲ ਮਿਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਿਗਾਹ ਕੀਤੀ, ਤੇ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਚੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲਈ ॥੫॥੨॥੧੮॥
In the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, His humble servants are liberated; O Nanak, they are redeemed and enraptured by the Lord's Glance of Grace. ||5||2||18||
ਮਾਰੂਮਹਲਾ੫॥
Maaroo, Fifth Mahalaa:
ਸਿਮਰਹੁਏਕੁਨਿਰੰਜਨਸੋਊ॥
ਉਸੇ ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਰਹੋ,
Meditate in remembrance on the One Immaculate Lord.
ਜਾਤੇਬਿਰਥਾਜਾਤਨਕੋਊ॥
ਜਿਸ (ਦੇ ਦਰ) ਤੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਜੀਵ ਖ਼ਾਲੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦਾ।
No one is turned away from Him empty-handed.
ਮਾਤਗਰਭਮਹਿਜਿਨਿਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਰਿਆ॥
ਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੇਟ ਵਿਚ ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਪਾਲਣਾ ਕੀਤੀ,
He cherished and preserved you in your mother's womb;
ਜੀਉਪਿੰਡੁਦੇਸਾਜਿਸਵਾਰਿਆ॥
ਜਿੰਦ ਤੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਬਣਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ।
He blessed you with body and soul, and embellished you.
ਸੋਈਬਿਧਾਤਾਖਿਨੁਖਿਨੁਜਪੀਐ॥
ਉਸੇ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਹਰੇਕ ਖਿਨ ਜਪਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ,
Each and every instant, meditate on that Creator Lord.
ਜਿਸੁਸਿਮਰਤਅਵਗਣਸਭਿਢਕੀਐ॥
ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰਦਿਆਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਔਗੁਣਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਢੱਕ ਸਕੀਦਾ ਹੈ।
Meditating in remembrance on Him, all faults and mistakes are covered.
ਚਰਣਕਮਲਉਰਅੰਤਰਿਧਾਰਹੁ॥
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਚਰਨ (ਆਪਣੇ) ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਈ ਰੱਖੋ,
Enshrine the Lord's lotus feet deep within the nucleus of your self.
ਬਿਖਿਆਬਨਤੇਜੀਉਉਧਾਰਹੁ॥
ਤੇ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਾਇਆ (ਸਾਗਰ ਦੇ ਠਾਠਾਂ ਮਾਰ ਰਹੇ) ਪਾਣੀ ਤੋਂ (ਆਪਣੀ) ਜਿੰਦ ਨੂੰ ਬਚਾ ਲਵੋ।
Save your soul from the waters of corruption.
ਕਰਣਪਲਾਹਮਿਟਹਿਬਿਲਲਾਟਾ॥
(ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ) ਸਾਰੇ ਕੀਰਨੇ ਤੇ ਵਿਰਲਾਪ ਮਿਟ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ,
Your cries and shrieks shall be ended;
ਜਪਿਗੋਵਿਦਭਰਮੁਭਉਫਾਟਾ॥
ਗੋਬਿੰਦ (ਦਾ ਨਾਮ) ਜਪ ਕੇ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਅਤੇ ਡਰ (ਦਾ ਪੜਦਾ) ਫਟ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
meditating on the Lord of the Universe, your doubts and fears shall be dispelled.
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿਵਿਰਲਾਕੋਪਾਏ॥
ਪਰ, ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
Rare is that being, who finds the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy.
ਨਾਨਕੁਤਾਕੈਬਲਿਬਲਿਜਾਏ॥੧॥
ਨਾਨਕ ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਕੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
Nanak is a sacrifice, a sacrifice to Him. ||1||
ਰਾਮਨਾਮੁਮਨਿਤਨਿਆਧਾਰਾ॥
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ (ਆਪਣੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦਾ) ਸਹਾਰਾ ਬਣਾਈ ਰੱਖ।
The Lord's Name is the support of my mind and body.
ਜੋਸਿਮਰੈਤਿਸਕਾਨਿਸਤਾਰਾ॥੧॥ਰਹਾਉ॥
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਨਾਮ) ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਉਸ (ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਦਾ ਪਾਰ-ਉਤਾਰਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Whoever meditates on Him is emancipated. ||1||Pause||
ਮਿਥਿਆਵਸਤੁਸਤਿਕਰਿਮਾਨੀ॥
(ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ!) ਤੂੰ ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਨਾਲ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਸਮਝ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ।
He believes that the false thing is true.
ਹਿਤੁਲਾਇਓਸਠਮੂੜਅਗਿਆਨੀ॥
ਹੇ ਦੁਸ਼ਟ! ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ! ਹੇ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝ! ਤੂੰ (ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ) ਪਿਆਰ ਪਾਇਆ ਹੈ।
The ignorant fool falls in love with it.
ਕਾਮਕ੍ਰੋਧਲੋਭਮਦਮਾਤਾ॥
(ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ!) ਤੂੰ ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਲੋਭ (ਆਦਿਕ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ) ਦੇ ਨਸ਼ੇ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਹੈਂ,
He is intoxicated with the wine of sexual desire, anger and greed;
ਕਉਡੀਬਦਲੈਜਨਮੁਗਵਾਤਾ॥
ਤੇ, ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਕੌਡੀ ਦੇ ਵੱਟੇ ਆਪਣਾ (ਕੀਮਤੀ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ) ਜਨਮ ਗਵਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ।
he loses this human life in exchange for a mere shell.
ਅਪਨਾਛੋਡਿਪਰਾਇਐਰਾਤਾ॥
ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ! (ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹੀ) ਆਪਣਾ (ਅਸਲ ਸਾਥੀ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ) ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਪਰਾਏ (ਹੋ ਜਾਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਧਨ-ਪਦਾਰਥ) ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ।
He abandons his own, and loves that of others.
ਮਾਇਆਮਦਮਨਤਨਸੰਗਿਜਾਤਾ॥
ਤੈਨੂੰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਨਸ਼ਾ ਚੜ੍ਹਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, ਤੂੰ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਲੱਗ ਕੇ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਸਰੀਰ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਦੌੜ-ਭੱਜ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ।
