Third Mahalaa:
मः ३ ॥
ਸੰਤਾਨਾਲਿਵੈਰੁਕਮਾਵਦੇਦੁਸਟਾਨਾਲਿਮੋਹੁਪਿਆਰੁ॥
ਨਿੰਦਕ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਵੈਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਦੁਰਜਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਮੋਹ ਪਿਆਰ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ।
They inflict their hatred upon the Saints, and they love the wicked sinners.
संता नालि वैरु कमावदे दुसटा नालि मोहु पिआरु ॥
ਅਗੈਪਿਛੈਸੁਖੁਨਹੀਮਰਿਜੰਮਹਿਵਾਰੋਵਾਰ॥
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਲੋਕ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਿਤੇ ਸੁਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ।
They find no peace in either this world or the next; they are born only to die, again and again.
अगै पिछै सुखु नही मरि जंमहि वारो वार ॥
ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾਕਦੇਨਬੁਝਈਦੁਬਿਧਾਹੋਇਖੁਆਰੁ॥
ਘੜੀ ਮੁੜੀ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਵਿਚ ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਹੋ ਹੋ ਕੇ, ਜੰਮਦੇ ਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ; ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਕਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਹਿੰਦੀ।
Their hunger is never satisfied, and they are ruined by duality.
त्रिसना कदे न बुझई दुबिधा होइ खुआरु ॥
ਮੁਹਕਾਲੇਤਿਨਾਨਿੰਦਕਾਤਿਤੁਸਚੈਦਰਬਾਰਿ॥
ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਸੱਚੇ ਦਰਬਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨਿੰਦਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਕਾਲੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
The faces of these slanderers are blackened in the Court of the True Lord.
मुह काले तिना निंदका तितु सचै दरबारि ॥
ਨਾਨਕਨਾਮਵਿਹੂਣਿਆਨਾਉਰਵਾਰਿਨਪਾਰਿ੨॥॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਹ ਇਸ ਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਤੇ ਨਾਹ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ (ਢੋਈ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ) ॥੨॥
O Nanak, without the Naam, they find no shelter on either this shore, or the one beyond. ||2||
नानक नाम विहूणिआ ना उरवारि न पारि ॥२॥

पउड़ी ॥
ਜੋਹਰਿਨਾਮੁਧਿਆਇਦੇਸੇਹਰਿਹਰਿਨਾਮਿਰਤੇਮਨਮਾਹੀ॥
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਹਰੀ-ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
Those who meditate on the Lord's Name, are imbued with the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, in their minds.
जो हरि नामु धिआइदे से हरि हरि नामि रते मन माही ॥
ਜਿਨਾਮਨਿਚਿਤਿਇਕੁਅਰਾਧਿਆਤਿਨਾਇਕਸਬਿਨੁਦੂਜਾਕੋਨਾਹੀ॥
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਇਕਾਗ੍ਰ ਚਿੱਤ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਇਕ ਹਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਅਰਾਧਿਆ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦੇ।
For those who worship the One Lord in their conscious minds, there is no other than the One Lord.
जिना मनि चिति इकु अराधिआ तिना इकस बिनु दूजा को नाही ॥
ਸੇਈਪੁਰਖਹਰਿਸੇਵਦੇਜਿਨਧੁਰਿਮਸਤਕਿਲੇਖੁਲਿਖਾਹੀ॥
(ਪਿਛਲੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕੰਮਾਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ) ਮੁੱਢ ਤੋਂ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਤੇ (ਸੰਸਕਾਰ-ਰੂਪ) ਲੇਖ ਉੱਕਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਜਪਦੇ ਹਨ।
They alone serve the Lord, upon whose foreheads such pre-ordained destiny is written.
सेई पुरख हरि सेवदे जिन धुरि मसतकि लेखु लिखाही ॥
ਹਰਿਕੇਗੁਣਨਿਤਗਾਵਦੇਹਰਿਗੁਣਗਾਇਗੁਣੀਸਮਝਾਹੀ॥
ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਗੁਣ ਗਾ ਕੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਹਰੀ ਦੀ (ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਦੇਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
They continually sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, and singing the Glories of the Glorious Lord, they are uplifted.
हरि के गुण नित गावदे हरि गुण गाइ गुणी समझाही ॥
ਵਡਿਆਈਵਡੀਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਗੁਰਪੂਰੈਹਰਿਨਾਮਿਸਮਾਹੀ੧੭॥॥
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਇਹ ਵੱਡਾ ਗੁਣ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪੂਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧੭॥
Great is the greatness of the Gurmukhs, who, through the Perfect Guru, remain absorbed in the Lord's Name. ||17||
वडिआई वडी गुरमुखा गुर पूरै हरि नामि समाही ॥१७॥

Shalok, Third Mahalaa:
सलोकु मः ३ ॥
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਕੀਸੇਵਾਗਾਖੜੀਸਿਰੁਦੀਜੈਆਪੁਗਵਾਇ॥
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਤੁਰਨਾ ਬੜੀ ਔਖੀ ਕਾਰ ਹੈ, ਸਿਰ ਦੇਣਾ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਆਪਾ ਗਵਾ ਕੇ (ਸੇਵਾ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ)।
It is very difficult to serve the True Guru; offer your head, and eradicate self-conceit.
सतिगुर की सेवा गाखड़ी सिरु दीजै आपु गवाइ ॥
ਸਬਦਿਮਰਹਿਫਿਰਿਨਾਮਰਹਿਤਾਸੇਵਾਪਵੈਸਭਥਾਇ॥
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਦੁਆਰਾ (ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਲੋਂ) ਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਫਿਰ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਾਰੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਬੂਲ ਪੈ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
One who dies in the Word of the Shabad shall never have to die again; his service is totally approved.
सबदि मरहि फिरि ना मरहि ता सेवा पवै सभ थाइ ॥
ਪਾਰਸਪਰਸਿਐਪਾਰਸੁਹੋਵੈਸਚਿਰਹੈਲਿਵਲਾਇ॥
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸੱਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਬ੍ਰਿਤੀ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਪਾਰਸ ਨੂੰ ਛੋਹ ਕੇ ਪਾਰਸ ਹੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
Touching the philosopher's stone, one becomes the philosopher's stone, which transforms lead into gold; remain lovingly attached to the True Lord.
पारस परसिऐ पारसु होवै सचि रहै लिव लाइ ॥
ਜਿਸੁਪੂਰਬਿਹੋਵੈਲਿਖਿਆਤਿਸੁਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਮਿਲੈਪ੍ਰਭੁਆਇ॥
ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਮੁੱਢ ਤੋਂ (ਸੰਸਕਾਰ-ਰੂਪ) ਲੇਖ ਉੱਕਰਿਆ ਹੋਵੇ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
One who has such pre-ordained destiny, comes to meet the True Guru and God.
जिसु पूरबि होवै लिखिआ तिसु सतिगुरु मिलै प्रभु आइ ॥
ਨਾਨਕਗਣਤੈਸੇਵਕੁਨਾਮਿਲੈਜਿਸੁਬਖਸੇਸੋਪਵੈਥਾਇ੧॥॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਲੇਖੈ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਸੇਵਕ (ਹਰੀ ਨੂੰ) ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲ ਸਕਦਾ, ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਹਰੀ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹੀ ਕਬੂਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
O Nanak, the Lord's servant does not meet Him because of his own account; he alone is acceptable, whom the Lord forgives. ||1||
नानक गणतै सेवकु ना मिलै जिसु बखसे सो पवै थाइ ॥१॥

Third Mahalaa:
मः ३ ॥
ਮਹਲੁਕੁਮਹਲੁਨਜਾਣਨੀਮੂਰਖਅਪਣੈਸੁਆਇ॥
ਮੂਰਖ ਆਪਣੀ ਗ਼ਰਜ਼ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਥਾਂ ਕੁਥਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦੇ, (ਕਿ ਕਿੱਥੇ ਗ਼ਰਜ਼ ਪੂਰੀ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ)।
The fools do not know the difference between good and bad; they are deceived by their self-interests.
महलु कुमहलु न जाणनी मूरख अपणै सुआइ ॥
ਸਬਦੁਚੀਨਹਿਤਾਮਹਲੁਲਹਹਿਜੋਤੀਜੋਤਿਸਮਾਇ॥
ਜੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਖੋਜਣ ਤਾਂ ਹਰੀ ਦੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਬ੍ਰਿਤੀ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ (ਹਰੀ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ-ਰੂਪ ਅਸਲ) ਟਿਕਾਣਾ ਲੱਭ ਲੈਣ।
But if they contemplate the Word of the Shabad, they obtain the Mansion of the Lord's Presence, and their light merges in the Light.
सबदु चीनहि ता महलु लहहि जोती जोति समाइ ॥
ਸਦਾਸਚੇਕਾਭਉਮਨਿਵਸੈਤਾਸਭਾਸੋਝੀਪਾਇ॥
ਜੇ ਸੱਚੇ ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਡਰ (ਭਾਵ, ਅਦਬ) ਸਦਾ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹੇ, ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਸਾਰੀ ਸਮਝ ਪੈ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ,
The Fear of God is always on their minds, and so they come to understand everything.
सदा सचे का भउ मनि वसै ता सभा सोझी पाइ ॥
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਅਪਣੈਘਰਿਵਰਤਦਾਆਪੇਲਏਮਿਲਾਇ॥
ਕਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ, ਜੋ ਸਦਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਰੂਪ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸੇਵਕ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
The True Guru is pervading the homes within; He Himself blends them with the Lord.
सतिगुरु अपणै घरि वरतदा आपे लए मिलाइ ॥
ਨਾਨਕਸਤਿਗੁਰਿਮਿਲਿਐਸਭਪੂਰੀਪਈਜਿਸਨੋਕਿਰਪਾਕਰੇਰਜਾਇ੨॥॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਤੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰੇ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਿਆਂ ਪੂਰਨ ਸਫਲਤਾ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
O Nanak, they meet the True Guru, and all their desires are fulfilled, if the Lord grants His Grace and so wills. ||2||
नानक सतिगुरि मिलिऐ सभ पूरी पई जिस नो किरपा करे रजाइ ॥२॥

पउड़ी ॥
ਧੰਨੁਧਨੁਭਾਗਤਿਨਾਭਗਤਜਨਾਜੋਹਰਿਨਾਮਾਹਰਿਮੁਖਿਕਹਤਿਆ॥
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਭਗਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਭਾਗ ਹਨ, ਜੋ ਮੂੰਹੋਂ ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਉਚਾਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
Blessed, blessed is the good fortune of those devotees, who, with their mouths, utter the Name of the Lord.
धंनु धनु भाग तिना भगत जना जो हरि नामा हरि मुखि कहतिआ ॥
ਧਨੁਧਨੁਭਾਗਤਿਨਾਸੰਤਜਨਾਜੋਹਰਿਜਸੁਸ੍ਰਵਣੀਸੁਣਤਿਆ॥
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਸੰਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਭਾਗ ਹਨ, ਜੋ ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਜਸ ਕੰਨੀਂ ਸੁਣਦੇ ਹਨ।
Blessed, blessed is the good fortune of those Saints, who, with their ears, listen to the Lord's Praises.
धनु धनु भाग तिना संत जना जो हरि जसु स्रवणी सुणतिआ ॥
ਧਨੁਧਨੁਭਾਗਤਿਨਾਸਾਧਜਨਾਹਰਿਕੀਰਤਨੁਗਾਇਗੁਣੀਜਨਬਣਤਿਆ॥
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਸਾਧ ਜਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਧੰਨ ਭਾਗ ਹਨ, ਜੋ ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਕੀਰਤਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਆਪ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਬਣਦੇ ਹਨ।
Blessed, blessed is the good fortune of those holy people, who sing the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises, and so become virtuous.
धनु धनु भाग तिना साध जना हरि कीरतनु गाइ गुणी जन बणतिआ ॥
ਧਨੁਧਨੁਭਾਗਤਿਨਾਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਜੋਗੁਰਸਿਖਲੈਮਨੁਜਿਣਤਿਆ॥
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਭਾਗ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਜਿੱਤਦੇ ਹਨ।
Blessed, blessed is the good fortune of those Gurmukhs, who live as Gursikhs, and conquer their minds.
धनु धनु भाग तिना गुरमुखा जो गुरसिख लै मनु जिणतिआ ॥
ਸਭਦੂਵਡੇਭਾਗਗੁਰਸਿਖਾਕੇਜੋਗੁਰਚਰਣੀਸਿਖਪੜਤਿਆ੧੮॥॥
ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਡੇ ਭਾਗ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਗੁਰਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਚਰਨੀਂ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ (ਭਾਵ, ਜੋ ਆਪਾ ਮਿਟਾ ਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਓਟ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ) ॥੧੮॥
But the greatest good fortune of all, is that of the Guru's Sikhs, who fall at the Guru's feet. ||18||
सभ दू वडे भाग गुरसिखा के जो गुर चरणी सिख पड़तिआ ॥१८॥
ਸਲੋਕੁਮਃ੩॥
Shalok, Third Mahalaa:
सलोकु मः ३ ॥
ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁਬਿੰਦੈਤਿਸਦਾਬ੍ਰਹਮਤੁਰਹੈਏਕਸਬਦਿਲਿਵਲਾਇ॥
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਕੇਵਲ ਗੁਰ-ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਬ੍ਰਿਤੀ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣੇ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਣ-ਪੁਣਾ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ;
One who knows God, and who lovingly focuses his attention on the One Word of the Shabad, keeps his spirituality intact.
ब्रहमु बिंदै तिस दा ब्रहमतु रहै एक सबदि लिव लाइ ॥
ਨਵਨਿਧੀਅਠਾਰਹਸਿਧੀਪਿਛੈਲਗੀਆਫਿਰਹਿਜੋਹਰਿਹਿਰਦੈਸਦਾਵਸਾਇ॥
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਏ, ਨੌ ਨਿਧੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਅਠਾਰਹ ਸਿੱਧੀਆਂ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਗਰ ਲੱਗੀਆਂ ਫਿਰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ।
The nine treasures and the eighteen spiritual powers of the Siddhas follow him, who keeps the Lord enshrined in his heart.
नव निधी अठारह सिधी पिछै लगीआ फिरहि जो हरि हिरदै सदा वसाइ ॥
ਬਿਨੁਸਤਿਗੁਰਨਾਉਨਪਾਈਐਬੁਝਹੁਕਰਿਵੀਚਾਰੁ॥
ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਸਮਝੋ, ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ,
Without the True Guru, the Name is not found; understand this, and reflect upon it.
बिनु सतिगुर नाउ न पाईऐ बुझहु करि वीचारु ॥
ਨਾਨਕਪੂਰੈਭਾਗਿਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਮਿਲੈਸੁਖੁਪਾਏਜੁਗਚਾਰਿ੧॥॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪੂਰੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲੇ ਉਹ ਚਹੁੰਆਂ ਜੁਗਾਂ ਵਿਚ (ਭਾਵ, ਸਦਾ) ਸੁਖ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
O Nanak, through perfect good destiny, one meets the True Guru, and finds peace, throughout the four ages. ||1||
नानक पूरै भागि सतिगुरु मिलै सुखु पाए जुग चारि ॥१॥

Third Mahalaa:
मः ३ ॥
ਕਿਆਗਭਰੂਕਿਆਬਿਰਧਿਹੈਮਨਮੁਖਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾਭੁਖਨਜਾਇ॥
ਜਵਾਨ ਹੋਵੇ ਭਾਵੇਂ ਬੁੱਢਾ-ਮਨਮੁਖ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਭੁੱਖ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ,
Whether he is young or old, the self-willed manmukh cannot escape hunger and thirst.
किआ गभरू किआ बिरधि है मनमुख त्रिसना भुख न जाइ ॥
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਸਬਦੇਰਤਿਆਸੀਤਲੁਹੋਏਆਪੁਗਵਾਇ॥
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੋਏ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਤੇ ਹੋਣ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਤੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਗਵਾ ਕੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਸੰਤੋਖੀ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
The Gurmukhs are imbued with the Word of the Shabad; they are at peace, having lost their self-conceit.
गुरमुखि सबदे रतिआ सीतलु होए आपु गवाइ ॥
ਅੰਦਰੁਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿਸੰਤੋਖਿਆਫਿਰਿਭੁਖਨਲਗੈਆਇ॥

They are satisfied and satiated within; they never feel hungry again.
