दोहरा ॥
ਦਿਨਤਸਕਰਤਾਸੌਰਮਤਦਰਬਠਗਨਠਗਜਾਇ॥
ਦਿਨ ਨੂੰ ਚੋਰ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਰਮਣ ਕਰਦਾ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਠਗ ਧਨ ਠਗਣ ਲਈ (ਬਾਹਰ) ਜਾਂਦਾ ਸੀ।
‘During the day, the thief made love with her whereas the swindler Went out to defraud.
दिन तसकर ता सौ रमत दरब ठगन ठग जाइ ॥
ਰੈਨਿਚੋਰਚੋਰਤਗ੍ਰਿਹਨਤਾਹਿਮਿਲਤਠਗਆਇ॥੬॥
ਰਾਤ ਨੂੰ ਚੋਰ ਘਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਚੋਰੀ ਕਰਨ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ (ਇਸਤਰੀ) ਨੂੰ ਠਗ ਆ ਮਿਲਦਾ ॥੬॥
‘At night the thief would go to steal and the swindler would come to meet her.(6)
रैनि चोर चोरत ग्रिहन ताहि मिलत ठग आइ ॥६॥

ਹੋਡਰੁਮਾਲਹੇਤਤਿਨਪਰੀ॥
ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਰੁਮਾਲ ਲਈ ਜ਼ਿਦ ਹੋ ਗਈ।
‘A row erupted on account of a handkerchief and the swindler
होड रुमाल हेत तिन परी ॥
ਮੁਹਰਸਾਤਸੈਠਗਹੂੰਹਰੀ॥
(ਉਸ ਲਈ) ਠਗ ਨੇ ਸੱਤ ਸੌ ਮੋਹਰਾਂ ਠਗ ਲਿਆਂਦੀਆਂ।
Managed to get seven hundred gold-coins.
मुहर सात सै ठगहूं हरी ॥
ਪੁਨਬਾਰੀਤਸਕਰਕੀਆਈ॥
ਫਿਰ ਚੋਰ ਦੀ ਵਾਰੀ ਆਈ।
‘Then came the turn of the thief and
पुन बारी तसकर की आई ॥
ਤੁਮੈਕਥਾਸੋਕਹੌਸੁਨਾਈ॥੭॥
(ਹੁਣ ਮੈਂ) ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਕਥਾ ਕਹਿ ਕੇ ਸੁਣਾਉਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ ॥੭॥
I am going to tell you his story,(7)
तुमै कथा सो कहौ सुनाई ॥७॥
ਹਜਰਤਿਤੇਤਸਕਰਗ੍ਰਿਹਆਯੋ॥
ਹਜ਼ੂਰ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਉਹ ਚੋਰ ਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ
‘That thief, then, came to the honourable’s house and
हजरति ते तसकर ग्रिह आयो ॥
ਗਪਿਯਾਕਹਜਮਲੋਕਪਠਾਯੋ॥
ਅਤੇ (ਉਸ ਨੇ) ਗਾਲੜੀ ਨੂੰ ਯਮਲੋਕ ਭੇਜ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ।
Despatched the gossiper to the angel of death.
गपिया कह जम लोक पठायो ॥
ਬਸਤ੍ਰਲਾਲਪਗਿਯਾਜੁਤਹਰੀ॥
ਲਾਲਾਂ ਸਹਿਤ ਪਗੜੀ ਅਤੇ ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਚੋਰੀ ਕਰ ਲਏ ਹਨ
‘He took with him the red turban and
बसत्र लाल पगिया जुत हरी ॥
ਗੋਸਟਿਬੈਠਿਸਾਹਸੋਕਰੀ॥੮॥
ਅਤੇ ਸ਼ਾਹ ਪਾਸ ਬੈਠ ਕੇ ਗੋਸਟਿ ਕਰਨ ਲਗਾ ਹੈ ॥੮॥
Other clothes and talked to the Shah.(8)

ਲਾਲਬਤ੍ਰਪਗਿਯਾਹਰੀਲਈਇਜਾਰਉਤਾਰ॥
ਲਾਲ, ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਅਤੇ ਪਗੜੀ ਚੋਰੀ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਸਲਵਾਰ ਤਕ ਉਤਾਰ ਲਈ ਹੈ।
‘One who took the red turban, made the trousers to be taken off,
लाल बत्र पगिया हरी लई इजार उतार ॥
ਪ੍ਰਾਨਉਬਾਰਾਸਾਹਕਾਹੋਇਕਵਨਕੀਨਾਰਿ॥੯॥
(ਉਸ ਨੇ) ਸ਼ਾਹ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਬਚਾਏ ਹਨ। (ਦਸੋ) ਉਹ ਕਿਸ ਦੀ ਨਾਰੀ ਹੋਣੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੯॥
‘And saved the life of the Shah, the woman should go to him.(9)
प्रान उबारा साह का होइ कवन की नारि ॥९॥
ਲਾਲਬਸਤ੍ਰਹਰਪਹੁਚਿਯਾਜਹਾਨਪਹੁਚਤਕੋਇ॥
(ਮੈਂ) ਲਾਲ ਅਤੇ ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਹਰਨ ਲਈ ਉਥੇ ਜਾ ਪਹੁੰਚਿਆ ਜਿਥੇ ਕੋਈ ਵੀ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ।
‘The one who, with red clothes, reached the place where no one else could go,
लाल बसत्र हर पहुचिया जहा न पहुचत कोइ ॥
ਪ੍ਰਾਨਉਬਾਰਿਯੋਸਾਹਕੋਤ੍ਰਿਯਾਕਵਨਕੀਹੋਇ॥੧੦॥
(ਮੈਂ) ਸ਼ਾਹ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਬਚਾਏ ਹਨ, (ਇਸ ਲਈ) ਇਸਤਰੀ ਕਿਸ ਦੀ ਹੋਇਗੀ ॥੧੦॥
‘And the one who saved the life of the Shah, the woman should be given to him.’(10)

ਵਹੁਤ੍ਰਿਯਾਸਾਹਚੋਰਕਹਦਈ॥
ਉਹ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਸ਼ਾਹ ਨੇ ਚੋਰ ਨੂੰ ਦੇ ਦਿੱਤੀ।
Next day the court settled and the Shah assigned that woman to the thief.
वहु त्रिया साह चोर कह दई ॥
ਤਾਕੀਕਰੀਸਿਫਤਿਬਹੁਭਾਰਾ॥
ਉਸ ਦੀ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ ਕੀਤੀ
Next day the court settled and the Shah assigned that woman to the thief.
ता की करी सिफति बहु भारा ॥
ਅਧਿਕਦਿਯਸਿਧਨਛੋਰਿਭੰਡਾਰਾ॥੧੧॥
ਅਤੇ (ਉਸ ਨੂੰ) ਭੰਡਾਰਾ ਖੋਲ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਧਨ ਦਿੱਤਾ ॥੧੧॥
(People) praised this very much and gave lot of wealth to them.(11)

ਏਦਿਲਰਾਜਮਤੀਲਈਠਗਕਹਿਦਿਯਸਿਨਿਕਾਰਿ॥
ਏਦਿਲ ਸ਼ਾਹ ਨੂੰ ਰਾਜ ਮਤੀ ਮਿਲ ਗਈ ਅਤੇ ਠਗ ਨੂੰ ਕਢ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ।
The justice brought back Raj Mati, and the swindler was banished,
एदिल राज मती लई ठग कहि दियसि निकारि ॥
ਲਾਲਬਸਤ੍ਰਹਰਸਾਹਕੇਤਿਹਗਪਿਯਾਕਹਮਾਰਿ॥੧੨॥
ਉਸ ਗਾਲੜੀ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਕੇ ਸ਼ਾਹ ਦੇ ਲਾਲ ਅਤੇ ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਚੁਰਾ ਲਏ ॥੧੨॥
And all this transpired through the murder of the gossiper and the stealing of the clothes.(l2)(1)

ਏਕਜਾਟਜੰਗਲਬਸੈਧਾਮਕਲਹਨੀਨਾਰਿ॥
ਇਕ ਜਟ ਜੰਗਲ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਸੀ। ਉਸ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਕੁਲੱਛਣੀ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਸੀ।
There lived a Jat (peasant) in the jungle along with is quarrelsome wife.
एक जाट जंगल बसै धाम कलहनी नारि ॥
ਜੋਵਹੁਕਹਤਸੁਨਕਰਤਗਾਰਿਨਕਰਤਪ੍ਰਹਾਰ॥੧॥
ਜੋ ਉਹ ਕਹਿੰਦਾ ਸੀ, ਉਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦੀ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਗਾਲ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਢਦੀ ਅਤੇ ਮਾਰਦੀ ਸੀ ॥੧॥
She never did what he told her to do, rather she swore at him.(1)

ਅਚਲਦੇਵਤਿਹਨਾਮਰਹਤਪ੍ਰਿਯ॥
ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਪਤੀ ਦਾ ਨਾਂ ਅਚਲ ਦੇਵ ਸੀ।
Sri Diljan Mati was her name and the husband was known as Achal Dev.
अचल देव तिह नाम रहत प्रिय ॥
ਰਹਤਰੈਨਿਦਿਨਤਾਕੇਡਾਰਿਯੋ॥
ਉਹ ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਰਾਤ ਦਿਨ ਡਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ

रहत रैनि दिन ता के डारियो ॥
ਕਬਹੂੰਜਾਤਨਗ੍ਰਹਿਤੇਮਾਰਿਯੋ॥੨॥
ਅਤੇ ਕਦੇ ਵੀ (ਉਸ ਨੂੰ) ਪਕੜ ਕੇ ਕੁਟਦਾ ਮਾਰਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ॥੨॥
He was always scared of her and never tried to beat her.(2)
कबहूं जात न ग्रहि ते मारियो ॥२॥

ਜਹਾਬਿਪਾਸਾਕੇਭਏਮਿਲਤਸਤੁਦ੍ਰਵਜਾਇ॥
ਜਿਥੇ ਬਿਆਸ ਨਦੀ ਵਿਚ ਸਤਲੁਜ ਨਦੀ ਜਾ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਸੀ,
Where there is the confluence of the rivers Beas and Satluj,
जहा बिपासा के भए मिलत सतुद्रव जाइ ॥
ਤਿਹਠਾਤੇਦੋਊਰਹਹਿਚੌਧਰਕਰਹਿਬਨਾਇ॥੩॥
ਉਥੇ ਦੋਵੇਂ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਚੌਧਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਸਨ ॥੩॥
They used to lived there; he was the headman of the place.(3)
तिह ठा ते दोऊ रहहि चौधर करहि बनाइ ॥३॥

ਜੋਕਾਰਜਕਰਨੋਵਹਜਾਨਤ॥
ਜੋ ਕੰਮ ਉਹ (ਪਤੀ) ਕਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ,
जो कारज करनो वह जानत ॥
ਤਾਹਿਕਰੈਨਹੀਐਸਬਖਾਨਤ॥
'ਉਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਨਾ', ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਹਿੰਦੀ। (ਅਤੇ ਜੋ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਨਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ)
Whatever the husband wanted to do, the wife would not let him.
ताहि करै नही ऐस बखानत ॥
ਤਬਵਹੁਕਾਜਤਰੁਨਿਹਠਕਰਈ॥
ਤਦ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਹਠ ਪੂਰਵਕ ਉਹੀ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦੀ
तब वहु काज तरुनि हठ करई ॥
ਪਤਿਕੀਕਾਨਿਨਕਛੁਜਿਯਧਰਈ॥੪॥
ਅਤੇ ਪਤੀ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਰਾ ਵੀ ਪਰਵਾਹ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਨਾ ਲਿਆਉਂਦੀ ॥੪॥
What he did not want to do, with due care of his honour, she would do it.(4)
पति की कानि न कछु जिय धरई ॥४॥
ਪਿਤਰਨਪਛਪਹੂਚਾਆਈ॥
ਸ਼ਰਾਧਾਂ ਦਾ ਪੱਖ ਆ ਪਹੁੰਚਿਆ।
What he did not want to do, with due care of his honour, she would do it.(4)
पितरन पछ पहूचा आई ॥
ਪਿਤੁਕੀਥਿਤਿਤਿਨਹੂੰਸੁਨਿਪਾਈ॥
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਵੀ ਪਿਤਾ ਦੀ ਥਿਤ ਬਾਰੇ ਸੁਣ ਲਿਆ।
The day for commemoration of his dead parents came, and he wanted to solemnize the occasion for his father,
पितु की थिति तिन हूं सुनि पाई ॥
ਤ੍ਰਿਯਸੌਕਹਾਸ੍ਰਾਧਨਹਿਕੀਜੈ॥
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਸ਼ਰਾਧ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਨਾ।

त्रिय सौ कहा स्राध नहि कीजै ॥
ਤਿਨਇਮਕਹੀਅਬੈਕਰਿਲੀਜੈ॥੫॥

ਸਕਲਸ੍ਰਾਧਕੋਸਾਜਬਨਾਯੋ॥
(ਉਸ ਨੇ) ਸ਼ਰਾਧ ਦੀ ਸਾਰੀ ਤਿਆਰੀ ਕਰ ਲਈ।

सकल स्राध को साज बनायो ॥
ਭੋਜਨਸਮੈਦਿਜਨਕੋਆਯੋ॥
ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੋਜਨ ਕਰਾਉਣ ਦਾ ਸਮਾਂ ਆ ਗਿਆ।

भोजन समै दिजन को आयो ॥
ਪਤਿਇਮਿਕਹੀਕਾਜਤ੍ਰਿਯਕੀਜੈ॥
ਪਤੀ ਨੇ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਹਾ

पति इमि कही काज त्रिय कीजै ॥
ਇਨਕਹਦਛਨਾਕਛੂਨਦੀਜੈ॥੬॥
ਕਿ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਰ ਕਿ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ (ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣਾਂ) ਨੂੰ ਦੱਛਣਾਂ ਆਦਿ ਕੁਝ ਨਾ ਦੇ ॥੬॥
The husband told like this, ‘These priest should not be given any alms.’(6)
इन कह दछना कछू न दीजै ॥६॥
ਤ੍ਰਿਯਭਾਖਾਮੈਢੀਲਨਕੈਹੌ॥
ਇਸਤਰੀ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ, ਮੈਂ ਢਿਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਾਂਗੀ
त्रिय भाखा मै ढील न कैहौ ॥
ਟਕਾਟਕਾਬੀਰਾਜੁਤਦੈਹੌ॥
ਅਤੇ ਪਾਨ ਦੇ ਬੀੜੇ ਸਹਿਤ ਇਕ ਇਕ ਟਕਾ (ਸਭ ਨੂੰ) ਦੇਵਾਂਗੀ।
‘No’ she said without any hesitation, ‘I will definitely give each one of them a coin of takka.
टका टका बीरा जुत दैहौ ॥
ਦਿਜਨਦੇਤਅਬਬਿਲੰਬਨਕਰਿਹੌ॥
ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੇਣੋ ਮੈਂ ਦੇਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਾਂਗੀ
‘No’ she said without any hesitation, ‘I will definitely give each one of them a coin of takka.
दिजन देत अब बिलंब न करिहौ ॥
ਤੋਰਮੂੰਡਪਰਬਿਸਟਾਭਰਿਹੌ॥੭॥
ਅਤੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਸਟਾ ਭਰਾਂਗੀ ॥੭॥
‘Don’t check me as I will definitely give them alms and I will shave your head off (put you in shame) and blacken your face (for thinking meanly)’.(7)
तोर मूंड पर बिसटा भरिहौ ॥७॥
ਤਬਬ੍ਰਹਮਨਸਭਬੈਠਜਿਵਾਏ॥
ਤਦ (ਉਸ ਨੇ) ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਬਿਠਾ ਕੇ ਭੋਜਨ ਕਰਾਇਆ
‘Don’t check me as I will definitely give them alms and I will shave your head off (put you in shame) and blacken your face (for thinking meanly)’.(7)
तब ब्रहमन सभ बैठ जिवाए ॥
ਅਧਿਕਦਰਬੁਦੈਧਾਮਪਠਾਏ॥
ਅਤੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰਾ ਧਨ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਘਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੇਜਿਆ।
All the priests were entertained with meals and they bid farewell with meals and they bid farewell with sufficient amount of money.
अधिक दरबु दै धाम पठाए ॥
ਪੁਨਿਤ੍ਰਿਯਸੌਤਿਨਐਸਉਚਾਰੀ॥
ਉਸ (ਪਤੀ) ਨੇ ਫਿਰ ਪਤਨੀ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ
All the priests were entertained with meals and they bid farewell with meals and they bid farewell with sufficient amount of money.
पुनि त्रिय सौ तिन ऐस उचारी ॥
ਸੁਨਹੁਸਾਸਤ੍ਰਕੀਰੀਤਿਪਿਆਰੀ॥੮॥
ਕਿ ਹੇ ਪਿਆਰੀ! ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਦੀ ਰੀਤ ਸੁਣੋ ॥੮॥
He, then, told his wife to observe the tradition of Shastras.’(8)

ਪਿੰਡਨਦੀਪਰਵਾਹੀਯਹਿਯਾਮਹਿਕਛੁਨਬਿਚਾਰ॥
ਪਿੰਡ ਨੂੰ ਨਦੀ ਵਿਚ ਰੁੜ੍ਹਾਇਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਵਿਚ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਮਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।
The stream near the village was so fast, she had never conceived
पिंड नदी परवाहीयहि या महि कछु न बिचार ॥
ਕਹਾਨਕੀਨਾਤਿਨਤਰੁਨਿਦਿਯੇਕੁਠੋਰਹਿਡਾਰਿ॥੯॥
ਪਰ ਉਸ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਨਾ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਅਤੇ (ਪਿੰਡ ਨੂੰ) ਮਾੜੀ ਥਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਸੁਟ ਦਿੱਤਾ ॥੯॥
Never harking to anyone, the woman put herself in trouble.(9) .

ਤਬਤਿਨਜਾਟਅਧਿਕਰਿਸਿਮਾਨੀ॥
ਤਦ ਉਸ ਜਟ ਨੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਕੀਤਾ
तब तिन जाट अधिक रिसि मानी ॥
ਤਾਕੀਨਾਸਬਿਵਤਜਿਯਆਨੀ॥
ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਵਿਨਾਸ਼ ਦੀ ਵਿਉਂਤ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਚਾਰੀ।
The Jat was rightly furious and planned to get rid of her.
ता की नास बिवत जिय आनी ॥
ਇਹੁਕਹਿਕਹੂੰਬੋਰਿਕਰਿਮਾਰੋ॥
ਇਸ ਨੂੰ (ਪਾਣੀ ਵਿਚ) ਡਬੋ ਕੇ ਮਾਰਾਂਗਾ
इहु कहि कहूं बोरि करि मारो ॥
ਨਿਤ੍ਯਨਿਤ੍ਯਕੋਤਾਪੁਨਿਵਾਰੋ॥੧੦॥
ਅਤੇ ਨਿੱਤ ਨਿੱਤ ਦਾ ਦੁਖ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਦਿਆਂਗਾ ॥੧੦॥
He determined to kill her in water and, thus, become free of the daily skirmishes.(10)
नित्य नित्य को तापु निवारो ॥१०॥
ਤਿਹਤ੍ਰਿਯਸੋਇਹਭਾਤਿਬਖਾਨੀ॥
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ,
तिह त्रिय सो इह भाति बखानी ॥
ਜਨਮਧਾਮਨਹਿਜਾਹੁਅਯਾਨੀ॥
ਤੂੰ ਪੇਕੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਾ। (ਉਸ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ, ਮੈਂ ਜ਼ਰੂਰ ਜਾਵਾਂਗੀ)।
He designed a scheme and asked her not to go to her parental home,
जनम धाम नहि जाहु अयानी ॥
ਕਰਿਡੋਰੀਤੁਮਕਹਮੈਦੈਹੋ॥
ਮੈਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਡੋਲੀ (ਪਾਲਕੀ) ਕਰ ਦਿਆਂਗਾ।
करि डोरी तुम कह मै दैहो ॥
ਉਨਭਾਖੋਯੌਹੀਉਠਿਜੈਹੋ॥੧੧॥
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ, ਮੈਂ (ਬਿਨਾ ਡੋਲੀ) ਦੇ, ਉਵੇਂ ਚਲੀ ਜਾਵਾਂਗੀ ॥੧੧॥
As, he had suggested that he would give her a rope (to cross over the stream) 11
उन भाखो यौ ही उठि जैहो ॥११॥
ਵਾਤ੍ਰਿਯਕੋਲੈਸੰਗਿਸਿਧਾਯੋ॥
ਉਹ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਲ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਤੁਰ ਪਿਆ
वा त्रिय को लै संगि सिधायो ॥
ਚਲਤਚਲਤਸਰਤਾਤਟਆਯੋ॥
ਅਤੇ ਚਲਦਾ ਚਲਦਾ ਨਦੀ ਦੇ ਕੰਢੇ ਆ ਗਿਆ।
But she said that she would definitely go and would go without the rope,
चलत चलत सरता तट आयो ॥
