ਸੁਖਮਨਾ
ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:
ਬਿਲਾਵਲੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ਅਸਟਪਦੀਆ ਘਰੁ ੧੧ ॥
Bilaaval, Fourth Mahalaa, Ashtapadees, Eleventh House:
ਆਪੈ ਆਪੁ ਖਾਇ ਹਉ ਮੇਟੈ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਰਸ ਗੀਤ ਗਵਈਆ ॥
One who eliminates his self-centeredness, and eradicates his ego, night and day sings the songs of the Lord's Love.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਰਚੈ ਕੰਚਨ ਕਾਇਆ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲਈਆ ॥੧॥
The Gurmukh is inspired, his body is golden, and his light merges into the Light of the Fearless Lord. ||1||
ਮੈ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਧਾਰੁ ਰਮਈਆ ॥
I take the Support of the Name of the Lord, Har, Har.
ਖਿਨੁ ਪਲੁ ਰਹਿ ਨ ਸਕਉ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਠ ਪੜਈਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
I cannot live, for a moment, even for an instant, without the Name of the Lord; the Gurmukh reads the Sermon of the Lord, Har, Har. ||1||Pause||
ਏਕੁ ਗਿਰਹੁ ਦਸ ਦੁਆਰ ਹੈ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਤਸਕਰ ਪੰਚ ਚੋਰ ਲਗਈਆ ॥
In the one house of the body, there are ten gates; night and day, the five thieves break in.
ਧਰਮੁ ਅਰਥੁ ਸਭੁ ਹਿਰਿ ਲੇ ਜਾਵਹਿ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਖਬਰਿ ਨ ਪਈਆ ॥੨॥
They steal the entire wealth of one's Dharmic faith, but the blind, self-willed manmukh does not know it. ||2||
ਕੰਚਨ ਕੋਟੁ ਬਹੁ ਮਾਣਕਿ ਭਰਿਆ ਜਾਗੇ ਗਿਆਨ ਤਤਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਈਆ ॥
The fortress of the body is overflowing with gold and jewels; when it is awakened by spiritual wisdom, one enshrines love for the essence of reality.
ਤਸਕਰ ਹੇਰੂ ਆਇ ਲੁਕਾਨੇ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਕੜਿ ਬੰਧਿ ਪਈਆ ॥੩॥
The thieves and robbers hide out in the body; through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, they are arrested and locked up. ||3||
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪੋਤੁ ਬੋਹਿਥਾ ਖੇਵਟੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਰਿ ਲੰਘਈਆ ॥
The Name of the Lord, Har, Har, is the boat, and the Word of the Guru's Shabad is the boatman, to carry us across.
ਜਮੁ ਜਾਗਾਤੀ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਨਾ ਕੋ ਤਸਕਰੁ ਚੋਰੁ ਲਗਈਆ ॥੪॥
The Messenger of Death, the tax collector, does not even come close, and no thieves or robbers can plunder you. ||4||
ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਸਦਾ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਮੈ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਕਹਤੇ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਲਹੀਆ ॥
I continuously sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, day and night; singing the Lord's Praises, I cannot find His limits.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਨੂਆ ਇਕਤੁ ਘਰਿ ਆਵੈ ਮਿਲਉ ਗੋੁਪਾਲ ਨੀਸਾਨੁ ਬਜਈਆ ॥੫॥
The mind of the Gurmukh returns to its own home; it meets the Lord of the Universe, to the beat of the celestial drum. ||5||
ਨੈਨੀ ਦੇਖਿ ਦਰਸੁ ਮਨੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤੈ ਸ੍ਰਵਨ ਬਾਣੀ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣਈਆ ॥
Gazing upon the Blessed Vision of His Darshan with my eyes, my mind is satisfied; with my ears, I listen to the Guru's Bani, and the Word of His Shabad.
ਸੁਨਿ ਸੁਨਿ ਆਤਮ ਦੇਵ ਹੈ ਭੀਨੇ ਰਸਿ ਰਸਿ ਰਾਮ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਰਵਈਆ ॥੬॥
Listening, listening, my soul is softened, delighted by His subtle essence, chanting the Name of the Lord of the Universe. ||6||
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਵਿਆਪੇ ਤੁਰੀਆ ਗੁਣੁ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਲਹੀਆ ॥
In the grip of the three qualities, they are engrossed in love and attachment to Maya; only as Gurmukh do they find the absolute quality, absorption in bliss.
ਏਕ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਸਭ ਸਮ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਨਦਰੀ ਆਵੈ ਸਭੁ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਪਸਰਈਆ ॥੭॥
With a single, impartial eye, look upon all alike, and see God pervading all. ||7||
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਹੈ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਬਾਈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਆਪੇ ਅਲਖੁ ਲਖਈਆ ॥
The Light of the Lord's Name permeates all; the Gurmukh knows the unknowable.
ਨਾਨਕ ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲ ਭਏ ਹੈ ਭਗਤਿ ਭਾਇ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਈਆ ॥੮॥੧॥੪॥
O Nanak, the Lord has become merciful to the meek; through loving adoration, he merges in the Lord's Name. ||8||1||4||
ਬਿਲਾਵਲੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥
Bilaaval, Fourth Mahalaa:
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੀਤਲ ਜਲੁ ਧਿਆਵਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਚੰਦਨ ਵਾਸੁ ਸੁਗੰਧ ਗੰਧਈਆ ॥
Meditate on the cool water of the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. Perfume yourself with the fragrant scent of the Lord, the sandalwood tree.
ਮਿਲਿ ਸਤਿਸੰਗਤਿ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਮੈ ਹਿਰਡ ਪਲਾਸ ਸੰਗਿ ਹਰਿ ਬੁਹੀਆ ॥੧॥
Joining the Society of the Saints, I have obtained the supreme status. I am just a castor-oil tree, made fragrant by their association. ||1||
ਜਪਿ ਜਗੰਨਾਥ ਜਗਦੀਸ ਗੁਸਈਆ ॥
Meditate on the Lord of the Universe, the Master of the world, the Lord of creation.
ਸਰਣਿ ਪਰੇ ਸੇਈ ਜਨ ਉਬਰੇ ਜਿਉ ਪ੍ਰਹਿਲਾਦ ਉਧਾਰਿ ਸਮਈਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Those humble beings who seek the Lord's Sanctuary are saved, like Prahlaad; they are emancipated and merge with the Lord. ||1||Pause||
ਭਾਰ ਅਠਾਰਹ ਮਹਿ ਚੰਦਨੁ ਊਤਮ ਚੰਦਨ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਸਭ ਚੰਦਨੁ ਹੁਈਆ ॥
Of all plants, the sandalwood tree is the most sublime. Everything near the sandalwood tree becomes fragrant like sandalwood.
ਸਾਕਤ ਕੂੜੇ ਊਭ ਸੁਕ ਹੂਏ ਮਨਿ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ਵਿਛੁੜਿ ਦੂਰਿ ਗਈਆ ॥੨॥
The stubborn, false faithless cynics are dried up; their egotistical pride separates them far from the Lord. ||2||
ਹਰਿ ਗਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ ਕਰਤਾ ਆਪੇ ਜਾਣੈ ਸਭ ਬਿਧਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਆਪਿ ਬਨਈਆ ॥
Only the Creator Lord Himself knows the state and condition of everyone; the Lord Himself makes all the arrangements.
ਜਿਸੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੇ ਸੁ ਕੰਚਨੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਜੋ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਸੁ ਮਿਟੈ ਨ ਮਿਟਈਆ ॥੩॥
One who meets the True Guru is transformed into gold. Whatever is pre-ordained, is not erased by erasing. ||3||
ਰਤਨ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਪਾਵੈ ਸਾਗਰ ਭਗਤਿ ਭੰਡਾਰ ਖੁਲੑਈਆ ॥
The treasure of jewels is found in the ocean of the Guru's Teachings. The treasure of devotional worship is opened to me.
ਗੁਰ ਚਰਣੀ ਇਕ ਸਰਧਾ ਉਪਜੀ ਮੈ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਕਹਤੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਨ ਭਈਆ ॥੪॥
Focused on the Guru's Feet, faith wells up within me; chanting the Glorious Praises of the Lord, I hunger for more. ||4||
ਪਰਮ ਬੈਰਾਗੁ ਨਿਤ ਨਿਤ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਏ ਮੈ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਕਹਤੇ ਭਾਵਨੀ ਕਹੀਆ ॥
I am totally detached, continually, continuously meditating on the Lord; chanting the Glorious Praises of the Lord, I express my love for Him.
ਬਾਰ ਬਾਰ ਖਿਨੁ ਖਿਨੁ ਪਲੁ ਕਹੀਐ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਰੁ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ਪਰੈ ਪਰਈਆ ॥੫॥
Time and time again, each and every moment and instant, I express it. I cannot find the Lord's limits; He is the farthest of the far. ||5||
ਸਾਸਤ ਬੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਣ ਪੁਕਾਰਹਿ ਧਰਮੁ ਕਰਹੁ ਖਟੁ ਕਰਮ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਈਆ ॥
The Shaastras, the Vedas and the Puraanas advise righteous actions, and the performance of the six religious rituals.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਪਾਖੰਡਿ ਭਰਮਿ ਵਿਗੂਤੇ ਲੋਭ ਲਹਰਿ ਨਾਵ ਭਾਰਿ ਬੁਡਈਆ ॥੬॥
The hypocritical, self-willed manmukhs are ruined by doubt; in the waves of greed, their boat is heavily loaded, and it sinks. ||6||
ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਨਾਮੇ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਵਹੁ ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਨਾਮੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਈਆ ॥
So chant the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and through the Naam, find emancipation. The Simritees and Shaastras recommend the Naam.
ਹਉਮੈ ਜਾਇ ਤ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਰਚੈ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਈਆ ॥੭॥
Eradicating egotism, one becomes pure. The Gurmukh is inspired, and obtains the supreme status. ||7||
ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਵਰਨੁ ਰੂਪੁ ਸਭੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਜਿਤੁ ਲਾਵਹਿ ਸੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਈਆ ॥
This world, with its colors and forms, is all Yours, O Lord; as You attach us, so do we do our deeds.
ਨਾਨਕ ਜੰਤ ਵਜਾਏ ਵਾਜਹਿ ਜਿਤੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਤੁ ਰਾਹਿ ਚਲਈਆ ॥੮॥੨॥੫॥
O Nanak, we are the instruments upon which He plays; as He wills, so is the path we take. ||8||2||5||
ਬਿਲਾਵਲੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥
Bilaaval, Fourth Mahalaa:
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅਗਮ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਹਉ ਬਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਤਿ ਪੁਰਖਈਆ ॥
The Gurmukh meditates on the Inaccessible, Unfathomable Lord. I am a sacrifice, a sacrifice to the True Guru, the True Primal Being.
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੇਰੈ ਪ੍ਰਾਣਿ ਵਸਾਏ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਈਆ ॥੧॥
He has brought the Lord's Name to dwell upon my breath of life; meeting with the True Guru, I am absorbed into the Lord's Name. ||1||
ਜਨ ਕੀ ਟੇਕ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਟਿਕਈਆ ॥
The Name of the Lord is the only Support of His humble servants.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਧਰ ਲਾਗਾ ਜਾਵਾ ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਦਰੁ ਲਹੀਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
I shall live under the protection of the True Guru. By Guru's Grace, I shall attain the Court of the Lord. ||1||Pause||
ਇਹੁ ਸਰੀਰੁ ਕਰਮ ਕੀ ਧਰਤੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਥਿ ਮਥਿ ਤਤੁ ਕਢਈਆ ॥
This body is the field of karma; the Gurmukhs plow and work it, and harvest the essence.
ਲਾਲੁ ਜਵੇਹਰ ਨਾਮੁ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸਿਆ ਭਾਂਡੈ ਭਾਉ ਪਵੈ ਤਿਤੁ ਅਈਆ ॥੨॥
The priceless jewel of the Naam becomes manifest, and it pours into their vessels of love. ||2||
ਦਾਸਨਿ ਦਾਸ ਦਾਸ ਹੋਇ ਰਹੀਐ ਜੋ ਜਨ ਰਾਮ ਭਗਤ ਨਿਜ ਭਈਆ ॥
Become the slave of the slave of the slave, of that humble being who has become the devotee of the Lord.
ਮਨੁ ਬੁਧਿ ਅਰਪਿ ਧਰਉ ਗੁਰ ਆਗੈ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਮੈ ਅਕਥੁ ਕਥਈਆ ॥੩॥
I dedicate my mind and intellect, and place them in offering before my Guru; by Guru's Grace, I speak the Unspoken. ||3||
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਵਿਆਪੇ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਜਲਤ ਤਿਖਈਆ ॥
The self-willed manmukhs are engrossed in attachment to Maya; their minds are thirsty, burning with desire.
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਜਲੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਅਗਨਿ ਬੁਝੀ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਬੁਝਈਆ ॥੪॥
Following the Guru's Teachings, I have obtained the Ambrosial Water of the Naam, and the fire has been put out. The Word of the Guru's Shabad has put it out. ||4||
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਨਾਚੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਆਗੈ ਅਨਹਦ ਸਬਦ ਧੁਨਿ ਤੂਰ ਵਜਈਆ ॥
This mind dances before the True Guru. The unstruck sound current of the Shabad resounds, vibrating the celestial melody.
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਉਸਤਤਿ ਕਰੈ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਰਖਿ ਰਖਿ ਚਰਣ ਹਰਿ ਤਾਲ ਪੂਰਈਆ ॥੫॥
I praise the Lord, day and night, moving my feet to the beat of the drum. ||5||
ਹਰਿ ਕੈ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਤਾ ਮਨੁ ਗਾਵੈ ਰਸਿ ਰਸਾਲ ਰਸਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਰਵਈਆ ॥
Imbued with the Lord's Love, my mind sings His Praise, joyfully chanting the Shabad, the source of nectar and bliss.
ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਧਾਰ ਚੁਐ ਅਤਿ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਜਿਨਿ ਪੀਆ ਤਿਨ ਹੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਲਹੀਆ ॥੬॥
The stream of immaculate purity flows through the home of the self within; one who drinks it in, finds peace. ||6||
ਮਨਹਠਿ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੈ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੀ ਜਿਉ ਬਾਲਕ ਬਾਲੂ ਘਰ ਉਸਰਈਆ ॥
The stubborn-minded, egotistical, proud-minded person performs rituals, but these are like sand castles built by children.
ਆਵੈ ਲਹਰਿ ਸਮੁੰਦ ਸਾਗਰ ਕੀ ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਭਿੰਨ ਭਿੰਨ ਢਹਿ ਪਈਆ ॥੭॥
When the waves of the ocean come in, they crumble and dissolve in an instant. ||7||
ਹਰਿ ਸਰੁ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਹਰਿ ਹੈ ਆਪੇ ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਹੈ ਸਭੁ ਖੇਲੁ ਖੇਲਈਆ ॥
The Lord is the pool, and the Lord Himself is the ocean; this world is all a play which He has staged.
ਜਿਉ ਜਲ ਤਰੰਗ ਜਲੁ ਜਲਹਿ ਸਮਾਵਹਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਰਮਈਆ ॥੮॥੩॥੬॥
As the waves of water merge into the water again, O Nanak, so does He merge into Himself. ||8||3||6||
ਬਿਲਾਵਲੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥
Bilaaval, Fourth Mahalaa:
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪਰਚੈ ਮਨਿ ਮੁੰਦ੍ਰਾ ਪਾਈ ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਤਨਿ ਭਸਮ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਈਆ ॥
My mind wears the ear-rings of the True Guru's acquaintance; I apply the ashes of the Word of the Guru's Shabad to my body.
ਅਮਰ ਪਿੰਡ ਭਏ ਸਾਧੂ ਸੰਗਿ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਦੋਊ ਮਿਟਿ ਗਈਆ ॥੧॥
My body has become immortal, in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy. Both birth and death have come to an end for me. ||1||
ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਰਹੀਆ ॥
O my mind, remain united with the Saadh Sangat.
ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਹੁ ਮਧਸੂਦਨ ਮਾਧਉ ਮੈ ਖਿਨੁ ਖਿਨੁ ਸਾਧੂ ਚਰਣ ਪਖਈਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Be merciful to me, O Lord; each and every instant, let me wash the Feet of the Holy. ||1||Pause||
ਤਜੈ ਗਿਰਸਤੁ ਭਇਆ ਬਨ ਵਾਸੀ ਇਕੁ ਖਿਨੁ ਮਨੂਆ ਟਿਕੈ ਨ ਟਿਕਈਆ ॥
Forsaking family life, he wanders in the forest, but his mind does not remain at rest, even for an instant.
ਧਾਵਤੁ ਧਾਇ ਤਦੇ ਘਰਿ ਆਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਸਰਣਿ ਪਵਈਆ ॥੨॥
The wandering mind returns home, only when it seeks the Sanctuary of the Lord's Holy people. ||2||
ਧੀਆ ਪੂਤ ਛੋਡਿ ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ ਆਸਾ ਆਸ ਮਨਿ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਕਰਈਆ ॥
The Sannyaasi renounces his daughters and sons, but his mind still conjures up all sorts of hopes and desires.
ਆਸਾ ਆਸ ਕਰੈ ਨਹੀ ਬੂਝੈ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਨਿਰਾਸ ਸੁਖੁ ਲਹੀਆ ॥੩॥
With these hopes and desires, he still does not understand, that only through the Word of the Guru's Shabad does one become free of desires, and find peace. ||3||
ਉਪਜੀ ਤਰਕ ਦਿਗੰਬਰੁ ਹੋਆ ਮਨੁ ਦਹ ਦਿਸ ਚਲਿ ਚਲਿ ਗਵਨੁ ਕਰਈਆ ॥
When detachment from the world wells up within, he become a naked hermit, but still, his mind roams, wanders and rambles in the ten directions.
ਪ੍ਰਭਵਨੁ ਕਰੈ ਬੂਝੈ ਨਹੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਮਿਲਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਾਧ ਦਇਆ ਘਰੁ ਲਹੀਆ ॥੪॥
He wanders around, but his desires are not satisfied; joining the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, he finds the house of kindness and compassion. ||4||
ਆਸਣ ਸਿਧ ਸਿਖਹਿ ਬਹੁਤੇਰੇ ਮਨਿ ਮਾਗਹਿ ਰਿਧਿ ਸਿਧਿ ਚੇਟਕ ਚੇਟਕਈਆ ॥
The Siddhas learn many Yogic postures, but their minds still yearn for riches, miraculous powers and energy.
ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਮਨਿ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਿਧਿ ਪਈਆ ॥੫॥
Satisfaction, contentment and tranquility do not come to their minds; but meeting the Holy Saints, they are satisfied, and through the Name of the Lord, spiritual perfection is attained. ||5||
ਅੰਡਜ ਜੇਰਜ ਸੇਤਜ ਉਤਭੁਜ ਸਭਿ ਵਰਨ ਰੂਪ ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਉਪਈਆ ॥
Life is born from the egg, from the womb, from sweat and from the earth; God created the beings and creatures of all colors and forms.
ਸਾਧੂ ਸਰਣਿ ਪਰੈ ਸੋ ਉਬਰੈ ਖਤ੍ਰੀ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣੁ ਸੂਦੁ ਵੈਸੁ ਚੰਡਾਲੁ ਚੰਡਈਆ ॥੬॥
One who seeks the Sanctuary of the Holy is saved, whether he is a Kh'shaatriya, a Brahmin, a Soodra, a Vaishya or the most untouchable of the untouchables. ||6||
ਨਾਮਾ ਜੈਦੇਉ ਕੰਬੀਰੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਲੋਚਨੁ ਅਉਜਾਤਿ ਰਵਿਦਾਸੁ ਚਮਿਆਰੁ ਚਮਈਆ ॥
Naam Dayv, Jai Dayv, Kabeer, Trilochan and Ravi Daas the low-caste leather-worker,
ਜੋ ਜੋ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਾਧੂ ਜਨ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਧਨੁ ਧੰਨਾ ਜਟੁ ਸੈਣੁ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਦਈਆ ॥੭॥
blessed Dhanna and Sain; all those who joined the humble Saadh Sangat, met the Merciful Lord. ||7||
ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਕੀ ਹਰਿ ਪੈਜ ਰਖਾਈ ਭਗਤਿ ਵਛਲੁ ਅੰਗੀਕਾਰੁ ਕਰਈਆ ॥
The Lord protects the honor of His humble servants; He is the Lover of His devotees - He makes them His own.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਰਣਿ ਪਰੇ ਜਗਜੀਵਨ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰਿ ਰਖਈਆ ॥੮॥੪॥੭॥
Nanak has entered the Sanctuary of the Lord, the Life of the world, who has showered His Mercy upon him, and saved him. ||8||||4||7||
ਬਿਲਾਵਲੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥
Bilaaval, Fourth Mahalaa:
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਪਿਆਸ ਉਠੀ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੇਰੀ ਸੁਣਿ ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨ ਮਨਿ ਤੀਰ ਲਗਈਆ ॥
The thirst for God has welled up deep within me; hearing the Word of the Guru's Teachings, my mind is pierced by His arrow.
ਮਨ ਕੀ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਮਨ ਹੀ ਜਾਣੈ ਅਵਰੁ ਕਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਕੋ ਪੀਰ ਪਰਈਆ ॥੧॥
The pain of my mind is known only to my own mind; who can know the pain of another? ||1||
ਰਾਮ ਗੁਰਿ ਮੋਹਨਿ ਮੋਹਿ ਮਨੁ ਲਈਆ ॥
The Lord, the Guru, the Enticer, has enticed my mind.
ਹਉ ਆਕਲ ਬਿਕਲ ਭਈ ਗੁਰ ਦੇਖੇ ਹਉ ਲੋਟ ਪੋਟ ਹੋਇ ਪਈਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
I am stunned and amazed, gazing upon my Guru; I have entered the realm of wonder and bliss. ||1||Pause||
ਹਉ ਨਿਰਖਤ ਫਿਰਉ ਸਭਿ ਦੇਸ ਦਿਸੰਤਰ ਮੈ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਦੇਖਨ ਕੋ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਮਨਿ ਚਈਆ ॥
I wander around, exploring all lands and foreign countries; within my mind, I have such a great longing to see my God.
ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਕਾਟਿ ਦੇਉ ਗੁਰ ਆਗੈ ਜਿਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮਾਰਗੁ ਪੰਥੁ ਦਿਖਈਆ ॥੨॥
I sacrifice my mind and body to the Guru, who has shown me the Way, the Path to my Lord God. ||2||
ਕੋਈ ਆਣਿ ਸਦੇਸਾ ਦੇਇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੇਰਾ ਰਿਦ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਮੀਠ ਲਗਈਆ ॥
If only someone would bring me news of God; He seems so sweet to my heart, mind and body.
ਮਸਤਕੁ ਕਾਟਿ ਦੇਉ ਚਰਣਾ ਤਲਿ ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਮੇਲੇ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਈਆ ॥੩॥
I would cut off my head and place it under the feet of that one who leads me to meet and unite with my Lord God. ||3||
ਚਲੁ ਚਲੁ ਸਖੀ ਹਮ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪਰਬੋਧਹ ਗੁਣ ਕਾਮਣ ਕਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਲਹੀਆ ॥
Let us go, O my companions, and understand our God; with the spell of virtue, let us obtain our Lord God.
ਭਗਤਿ ਵਛਲੁ ਉਆ ਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਹੀਅਤੁ ਹੈ ਸਰਣਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤਿਸੁ ਪਾਛੈ ਪਈਆ ॥੪॥
He is called the Lover of His devotees; let us follow in the footsteps of those who seek God's Sanctuary. ||4||
ਖਿਮਾ ਸੀਗਾਰ ਕਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਖੁਸੀਆ ਮਨਿ ਦੀਪਕ ਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਬਲਈਆ ॥
If the soul-bride adorns herself with compassion and forgiveness, God is pleased, and her mind is illumined with the lamp of the Guru's wisdom.
ਰਸਿ ਰਸਿ ਭੋਗ ਕਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਹਮ ਤਿਸੁ ਆਗੈ ਜੀਉ ਕਟਿ ਕਟਿ ਪਈਆ ॥੫॥
With happiness and ecstasy, my God enjoys her; I offer each and every bit of my soul to Him. ||5||
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਾਰੁ ਕੰਠਿ ਹੈ ਬਨਿਆ ਮਨੁ ਮੋਤੀਚੂਰੁ ਵਡ ਗਹਨ ਗਹਨਈਆ ॥
I have made the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, my necklace; my mind tinged with devotion is the intricate ornament of crowning glory.
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਸਰਧਾ ਸੇਜ ਵਿਛਾਈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਮਨਿ ਭਈਆ ॥੬॥
I have spread out my bed of faith in the Lord, Har, Har. I cannot abandon Him - my mind is filled with such a great love for Him. ||6||
ਕਹੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਕੀਜੈ ਸਭੁ ਬਾਦਿ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ਫੋਕਟ ਫੋਕਟਈਆ ॥
If God says one thing, and the soul-bride does something else, then all her decorations are useless and false.
ਕੀਓ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ਮਿਲਣ ਕੈ ਤਾਈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਲੀਓ ਸੁਹਾਗਨਿ ਥੂਕ ਮੁਖਿ ਪਈਆ ॥੭॥
She may adorn herself to meet her Husband Lord, but still, only the virtuous soul-bride meets God, and the other's face is spat upon. ||7||
ਹਮ ਚੇਰੀ ਤੂ ਅਗਮ ਗੁਸਾਈ ਕਿਆ ਹਮ ਕਰਹ ਤੇਰੈ ਵਸਿ ਪਈਆ ॥
I am Your hand-maiden, O Inaccessible Lord of the Universe; what can I do by myself? I am under Your power.
ਦਇਆ ਦੀਨ ਕਰਹੁ ਰਖਿ ਲੇਵਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਸਰਣਿ ਸਮਈਆ ॥੮॥੫॥੮॥
Be merciful, Lord, to the meek, and save them; Nanak has entered the Sanctuary of the Lord, and the Guru. ||8||5||8||
ਬਿਲਾਵਲੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥
Bilaaval, Fourth Mahalaa:
ਮੈ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੁ ਅਗਮ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਕਾ ਖਿਨੁ ਖਿਨੁ ਸਰਧਾ ਮਨਿ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਉਠਈਆ ॥
My mind and body are filled with love for my Inaccessible Lord and Master. Each and every instant, I am filled with immense faith and devotion.
ਗੁਰ ਦੇਖੇ ਸਰਧਾ ਮਨ ਪੂਰੀ ਜਿਉ ਚਾਤ੍ਰਿਕ ਪ੍ਰਿਉ ਪ੍ਰਿਉ ਬੂੰਦ ਮੁਖਿ ਪਈਆ ॥੧॥
Gazing upon the Guru, my mind's faith is fulfilled, like the song-bird, which cries and cries, until the rain-drop falls into its mouth. ||1||
ਮਿਲੁ ਮਿਲੁ ਸਖੀ ਹਰਿ ਕਥਾ ਸੁਨਈਆ ॥
Join with me, join with me, O my companions, and teach me the Sermon of the Lord.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਦਇਆ ਕਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਮੇਲੇ ਮੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਆਗੈ ਸਿਰੁ ਕਟਿ ਕਟਿ ਪਈਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
The True Guru has mercifully united me with God. Cutting off my head, and chopping it into pieces, I offer it to Him. ||1||Pause||
ਰੋਮਿ ਰੋਮਿ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਇਕ ਬੇਦਨ ਮੈ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਦੇਖੇ ਬਿਨੁ ਨੀਦ ਨ ਪਈਆ ॥
Each and every hair on my head, and my mind and body, suffer the pains of separation; without seeing my God, I cannot sleep.
ਬੈਦਕ ਨਾਟਿਕ ਦੇਖਿ ਭੁਲਾਨੇ ਮੈ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪੀਰ ਲਗਈਆ ॥੨॥
The doctors and healers look at me, and are perplexed. Within my heart, mind and body, I feel the pain of divine love. ||2||
ਹਉ ਖਿਨੁ ਪਲੁ ਰਹਿ ਨ ਸਕਉ ਬਿਨੁ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਜਿਉ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਮਲੈ ਅਮਲੀ ਮਰਿ ਗਈਆ ॥
I cannot live for a moment, for even an instant, without my Beloved, like the opium addict who cannot live without opium.
ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਪਿਆਸ ਹੋਇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੇਰੀ ਤਿਨੑ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਭਾਵੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਕੋ ਦੁਈਆ ॥੩॥
Those who thirst for God, do not love any other. Without the Lord, there is no other at all. ||3||
ਕੋਈ ਆਨਿ ਆਨਿ ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਲਾਵੈ ਹਉ ਤਿਸੁ ਵਿਟਹੁ ਬਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਘੁਮਿ ਗਈਆ ॥
If only someone would come and unite me with God; I am devoted, dedicated, a sacrifice to him.
ਅਨੇਕ ਜਨਮ ਕੇ ਵਿਛੁੜੇ ਜਨ ਮੇਲੇ ਜਾ ਸਤਿ ਸਤਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਰਣਿ ਪਵਈਆ ॥੪॥
After being separated from the Lord for countless incarnations, I am re-united with Him, entering the Sanctuary of the True, True, True Guru. ||4||
ਸੇਜ ਏਕ ਏਕੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਮਹਲੁ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਭਰਮਈਆ ॥
There is one bed for the soul-bride, and the same bed for God, her Lord and Master. The self-willed manmukh does not obtain the Mansion of the Lord's Presence; she wanders around, in limbo.
ਗੁਰੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਕਰਤ ਸਰਣਿ ਜੇ ਆਵੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਆਇ ਮਿਲੈ ਖਿਨੁ ਢੀਲ ਨ ਪਈਆ ॥੫॥
Uttering, "Guru, Guru", she seeks His Sanctuary; so God comes to meet her, without a moment's delay. ||5||
ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਿਆਚਾਰ ਵਧਾਏ ਮਨਿ ਪਾਖੰਡ ਕਰਮੁ ਕਪਟ ਲੋਭਈਆ ॥
One may perform many rituals, but the mind is filled with hypocrisy, evil deeds and greed.
ਬੇਸੁਆ ਕੈ ਘਰਿ ਬੇਟਾ ਜਨਮਿਆ ਪਿਤਾ ਤਾਹਿ ਕਿਆ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਦਈਆ ॥੬॥
When a son is born in the house of a prostitute, who can tell the name of his father? ||6||
ਪੂਰਬ ਜਨਮਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਆਏ ਗੁਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਜਮਈਆ ॥
Because of devotional worship in my past incarnations, I have been born into this life. The Guru has inspired me to worship the Lord, Har, Har, Har, Har.
ਭਗਤਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਈਆ ॥੭॥
Worshipping, worshipping Him with devotion, I found the Lord, and then I merged into the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, Har, Har. ||7||
ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਆਣਿ ਆਣਿ ਮਹਿੰਦੀ ਪੀਸਾਈ ਆਪੇ ਘੋਲਿ ਘੋਲਿ ਅੰਗਿ ਲਈਆ ॥
God Himself came and ground the henna leaves into powder, and applied it to my body.
ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਠਾਕੁਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰੀ ਬਾਹ ਪਕਰਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਢਿ ਲਈਆ ॥੮॥੬॥੨॥੧॥੬॥੯॥
Our Lord and Master showers His Mercy upon us, and grasps hold of our arms; O Nanak, He lifts us up and saves us. ||8||6||9||2||1||6||9||
ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:
ਨਟ ਅਸਟਪਦੀਆ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥
Nat Ashtapadees, Fourth Mahalaa:
ਰਾਮ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਧਾਰੇ ॥
O Lord, Your Name is the support of my mind and body.
ਖਿਨੁ ਪਲੁ ਰਹਿ ਨ ਸਕਉ ਬਿਨੁ ਸੇਵਾ ਮੈ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮੑਾਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
I cannot survive for a moment, even for an instant, without serving You. Following the Guru's Teachings, I dwell upon the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||1||Pause||
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਧਿਆਵਹੁ ਮੈ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥
Within my mind, I meditate on the Lord, Har, Har, Har, Har, Har. The Name of the Lord, Har, Har, is so dear to me.
ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲ ਭਏ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਵਾਰੇ ॥੧॥
When God, my Lord and Master, became merciful to me the meek one, I was exalted by the Word of the Guru's Shabad. ||1||
ਮਧਸੂਦਨ ਜਗਜੀਵਨ ਮਾਧੋ ਮੇਰੇ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਅਗਮ ਅਪਾਰੇ ॥
Almighty Lord, Slayer of demons, Life of the World, my Lord and Master, inaccessible and infinite:
ਇਕ ਬਿਨਉ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਉ ਗੁਰ ਆਗੈ ਮੈ ਸਾਧੂ ਚਰਨ ਪਖਾਰੇ ॥੨॥
I offer this one prayer to the Guru, to bless me, that I may wash the feet of the Holy. ||2||
ਸਹਸ ਨੇਤ੍ਰ ਨੇਤ੍ਰ ਹੈ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਉ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਏਕੋ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਾਰੇ ॥
The thousands of eyes are the eyes of God; the One God, the Primal Being, remains unattached.
ਸਹਸ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਏਕੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਏਕੋ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਤਾਰੇ ॥੩॥
The One God, our Lord and Master, has thousands of forms; God alone, through the Guru's Teachings, saves us. ||3||
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦਮੋਦਰੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰੇ ॥
Following the Guru's Teachings, I have been blessed with the Naam, the Name of the Lord. I have enshrined within my heart the Name of the Lord, Har, Har.
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕਥਾ ਬਨੀ ਅਤਿ ਮੀਠੀ ਜਿਉ ਗੂੰਗਾ ਗਟਕ ਸਮੑਾਰੇ ॥੪॥
The sermon of the Lord, Har, Har, is so very sweet; like the mute, I taste its sweetness, but I cannot describe it at all. ||4||
ਰਸਨਾ ਸਾਦ ਚਖੈ ਭਾਇ ਦੂਜੈ ਅਤਿ ਫੀਕੇ ਲੋਭ ਬਿਕਾਰੇ ॥
The tongue savors the bland, insipid taste of the love of duality, greed and corruption.
ਜੋ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਦ ਚਖਹਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਾ ਸਭ ਅਨ ਰਸ ਸਾਦ ਬਿਸਾਰੇ ॥੫॥
The Gurmukh tastes the flavor of the Lord's Name, and all other tastes and flavors are forgotten. ||5||
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਨੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਸੁਣਿ ਕਹਤਿਆ ਪਾਪ ਨਿਵਾਰੇ ॥
Following the Guru's Teachings, I have obtained the wealth of the Lord's Name; hearing it, and chanting it, sins are eradicated.
ਧਰਮ ਰਾਇ ਜਮੁ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਮੇਰੇ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਕੇ ਜਨ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥੬॥
The Messenger of Death and the Righteous Judge of Dharma do not even approach the beloved servant of my Lord and Master. ||6||
ਸਾਸ ਸਾਸ ਸਾਸ ਹੈ ਜੇਤੇ ਮੈ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮੑਾਰੇ ॥
With as many breaths as I have, I chant the Naam, under Guru's Instructions.
ਸਾਸੁ ਸਾਸੁ ਜਾਇ ਨਾਮੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਸੋ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਸਾਸੁ ਬਿਕਾਰੇ ॥੭॥
Each and every breath which escapes me without the Naam - that breath is useless and corrupt. ||7||
ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਿ ਦੀਨ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਰਨੀ ਮੋ ਕਉ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਮੇਲਿ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥
Please grant Your Grace; I am meek; I seek Your Sanctuary, God. Unite me with Your beloved, humble servants.
ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸਨਿ ਦਾਸੁ ਕਹਤੁ ਹੈ ਹਮ ਦਾਸਨ ਕੇ ਪਨਿਹਾਰੇ ॥੮॥੧॥
Nanak, the slave of Your slaves, says, I am the water-carrier of Your slaves. ||8||1||
ਨਟ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥
Nat, Fourth Mahalaa:
ਰਾਮ ਹਮ ਪਾਥਰ ਨਿਰਗੁਨੀਆਰੇ ॥
O Lord, I am an unworthy stone.
ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਾਏ ਹਮ ਪਾਹਨ ਸਬਦਿ ਗੁਰ ਤਾਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
The Merciful Lord, in His Mercy, has led me to meet the Guru; through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, this stone is carried across. ||1||Pause||
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਨਾਮੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਏ ਅਤਿ ਮੀਠਾ ਮੈਲਾਗਰੁ ਮਲਗਾਰੇ ॥
The True Guru has implanted within me the exceedingly sweet Naam, the Name of the Lord; it is like the most fragrant sandalwood.
ਨਾਮੈ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਵਜੀ ਹੈ ਦਹ ਦਿਸਿ ਹਰਿ ਮੁਸਕੀ ਮੁਸਕ ਗੰਧਾਰੇ ॥੧॥
Through the Name, my awareness extends in the ten directions; the fragrance of the fragrant Lord permeates the air. ||1||
ਤੇਰੀ ਨਿਰਗੁਣ ਕਥਾ ਕਥਾ ਹੈ ਮੀਠੀ ਗੁਰਿ ਨੀਕੇ ਬਚਨ ਸਮਾਰੇ ॥
Your unlimited sermon is the most sweet sermon; I contemplate the most Sublime Word of the Guru.
ਗਾਵਤ ਗਾਵਤ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਏ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵਤ ਗੁਰਿ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੇ ॥੨॥
Singing, singing, I sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord; singing His Glorious Praises, the Guru saves me. ||2||
ਬਿਬੇਕੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਮਦਰਸੀ ਤਿਸੁ ਮਿਲੀਐ ਸੰਕ ਉਤਾਰੇ ॥
The Guru is wise and clear; the Guru looks upon all alike. Meeting with Him, doubt and skepticism are removed.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਹਉ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੇ ॥੩॥
Meeting with the True Guru, I have obtained the supreme status. I am a sacrifice to the True Guru. ||3||
ਪਾਖੰਡ ਪਾਖੰਡ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਭਰਮੇ ਲੋਭੁ ਪਾਖੰਡੁ ਜਗਿ ਬੁਰਿਆਰੇ ॥
Practicing hypocrisy and deception, people wander around in confusion. Greed and hypocrisy are evils in this world.
ਹਲਤਿ ਪਲਤਿ ਦੁਖਦਾਈ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਖੜਾ ਸਿਰਿ ਮਾਰੇ ॥੪॥
In this world and the next, they are miserable; the Messenger of Death hovers over their heads, and strikes them down. ||4||
ਉਗਵੈ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਆਲੁ ਜਾਲੁ ਸਮੑਾਲੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੇ ਬਿਸਥਾਰੇ ॥
At the break of day, they take care of their affairs, and the poisonous entanglements of Maya.
ਆਈ ਰੈਨਿ ਭਇਆ ਸੁਪਨੰਤਰੁ ਬਿਖੁ ਸੁਪਨੈ ਭੀ ਦੁਖ ਸਾਰੇ ॥੫॥
When night falls, they enter the land of dreams, and even in dreams, they take care of their corruptions and pains. ||5||
ਕਲਰੁ ਖੇਤੁ ਲੈ ਕੂੜੁ ਜਮਾਇਆ ਸਭ ਕੂੜੈ ਕੇ ਖਲਵਾਰੇ ॥
Taking a barren field, they plant falsehood; they shall harvest only falsehood.
ਸਾਕਤ ਨਰ ਸਭਿ ਭੂਖ ਭੁਖਾਨੇ ਦਰਿ ਠਾਢੇ ਜਮ ਜੰਦਾਰੇ ॥੬॥
The materialistic people shall all remain hungry; the brutal Messenger of Death stands waiting at their door. ||6||
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਕਰਜੁ ਚੜਿਆ ਬਿਖੁ ਭਾਰੀ ਉਤਰੈ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ॥
The self-willed manmukh has accumulated a tremendous load of debt in sin; only by contemplating the Word of the Shabad, can this debt be paid off.
ਜਿਤਨੇ ਕਰਜ ਕਰਜ ਕੇ ਮੰਗੀਏ ਕਰਿ ਸੇਵਕ ਪਗਿ ਲਗਿ ਵਾਰੇ ॥੭॥
As much debt and as many creditors as there are, the Lord makes them into servants, who fall at his feet. ||7||
ਜਗੰਨਾਥ ਸਭਿ ਜੰਤ੍ਰ ਉਪਾਏ ਨਕਿ ਖੀਨੀ ਸਭ ਨਥਹਾਰੇ ॥
All the beings which the Lord of the Universe created - He puts the rings through their noses, and leads them all along.
ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਖਿੰਚੈ ਤਿਵ ਚਲੀਐ ਜਿਉ ਭਾਵੈ ਰਾਮ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥੮॥੨॥
O Nanak, as God drives us on, so do we follow; it is all the Will of the Beloved Lord. ||8||2||
ਨਟ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥
Nat, Fourth Mahalaa:
ਰਾਮ ਹਰਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਸਰਿ ਨਾਵਾਰੇ ॥
The Lord has bathed me in the pool of Ambrosial Nectar.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਮਜਨੁ ਹੈ ਨੀਕੋ ਮਿਲਿ ਕਲਮਲ ਪਾਪ ਉਤਾਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
The spiritual wisdom of the True Guru is the most excellent cleansing bath; bathing in it, all the filthy sins are washed away. ||1||Pause||
ਸੰਗਤਿ ਕਾ ਗੁਨੁ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਅਧਿਕਾਈ ਪੜਿ ਸੂਆ ਗਨਕ ਉਧਾਰੇ ॥
The virtues of the Sangat, the Holy Congregation, are so very great. Even the prostitute was saved, by teaching the parrot to speak the Lord's Name.
ਪਰਸ ਨਪਰਸ ਭਏ ਕੁਬਿਜਾ ਕਉ ਲੈ ਬੈਕੁੰਠਿ ਸਿਧਾਰੇ ॥੧॥
Krishna was pleased, and so he touched the hunch-back Kubija, and she was transported to the heavens. ||1||
ਅਜਾਮਲ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਪ੍ਰਤਿ ਕੀਨੀ ਕਰਿ ਨਾਰਾਇਣ ਬੋਲਾਰੇ ॥
Ajaamal loved his son Naaraayan, and called out his name.
ਮੇਰੇ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਕੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਇ ਭਾਵਨੀ ਜਮਕੰਕਰ ਮਾਰਿ ਬਿਦਾਰੇ ॥੨॥
His loving devotion pleased my Lord and Master, who struck down and drove off the Messengers of Death. ||2||
ਮਾਨੁਖੁ ਕਥੈ ਕਥਿ ਲੋਕ ਸੁਨਾਵੈ ਜੋ ਬੋਲੈ ਸੋ ਨ ਬੀਚਾਰੇ ॥
The mortal speaks and by speaking, makes the people listen; but he does not reflect upon what he himself says.
ਸਤਿਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਤ ਦਿੜਤਾ ਆਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੇ ॥੩॥
But when he joins the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation, he is confirmed in his faith, and he is saved by the Name of the Lord. ||3||
ਜਬ ਲਗੁ ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਹੈ ਸਾਬਤੁ ਤਬ ਲਗਿ ਕਿਛੁ ਨ ਸਮਾਰੇ ॥
As long as his soul and body are healthy and strong, he does not remember the Lord at all.
ਜਬ ਘਰ ਮੰਦਰਿ ਆਗਿ ਲਗਾਨੀ ਕਢਿ ਕੂਪੁ ਕਢੈ ਪਨਿਹਾਰੇ ॥੪॥
But when his home and mansion catch fire, then, he wants to dig the well to draw water. ||4||
ਸਾਕਤ ਸਿਉ ਮਨ ਮੇਲੁ ਨ ਕਰੀਅਹੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਬਿਸਾਰੇ ॥
O mind, do not join with the faithless cynic, who has forgotten the Name of the Lord, Har, Har.
ਸਾਕਤ ਬਚਨ ਬਿਛੂਆ ਜਿਉ ਡਸੀਐ ਤਜਿ ਸਾਕਤ ਪਰੈ ਪਰਾਰੇ ॥੫॥
The word of the faithless cynic stings like a scorpion; leave the faithless cynic far, far behind. ||5||
ਲਗਿ ਲਗਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਬਹੁ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਲਗਾਈ ਲਗਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਵਾਰੇ ॥
Fall in love, fall deeply in love with the Lord; clinging to the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, you will be exalted and embellished.
ਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਬਚਨ ਸਤਿ ਸਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਮਾਨੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥੬॥
Those who accept the Word of the Guru as True, totally True, are very dear to my Lord and Master. ||6||
ਪੂਰਬਿ ਜਨਮਿ ਪਰਚੂਨ ਕਮਾਏ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥
Because of actions committed in past lives, one comes to love the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, Har.
ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਰਸੁ ਗਾਵੈ ਰਸੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ॥੭॥
By Guru's Grace, you shall obtain the ambrosial essence; sing of this essence, and reflect upon this essence. ||7||
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਰੂਪ ਰੰਗ ਸਭਿ ਤੇਰੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਲਾਲਨ ਲਾਲ ਗੁਲਾਰੇ ॥
O Lord, Har, Har, all forms and colors are Yours; O my Beloved, my deep crimson ruby.
ਜੈਸਾ ਰੰਗੁ ਦੇਹਿ ਸੋ ਹੋਵੈ ਕਿਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੰਤ ਵਿਚਾਰੇ ॥੮॥੩॥
Only that color which You impart, Lord, exists; O Nanak, what can the poor wretched being do? ||8||3||
ਨਟ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥
Nat, Fourth Mahalaa:
ਰਾਮ ਗੁਰ ਸਰਨਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਰਖਵਾਰੇ ॥
In the Sanctuary of the Guru, the Lord God saves and protects us,
ਜਿਉ ਕੁੰਚਰੁ ਤਦੂਐ ਪਕਰਿ ਚਲਾਇਓ ਕਰਿ ਊਪਰੁ ਕਢਿ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
as He protected the elephant, when the crocodile seized it and pulled it into the water; He lifted him up and pulled him out. ||1||Pause||
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਅਤਿ ਨੀਕੇ ਮਨਿ ਸਰਧਾ ਕਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਧਾਰੇ ॥
God's servants are sublime and exalted; they enshrine faith for Him in their minds.
ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਸਰਧਾ ਭਗਤਿ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵੈ ਜਨ ਕੀ ਪੈਜ ਸਵਾਰੇ ॥੧॥
Faith and devotion are pleasing to my God's Mind; He saves the honor of His humble servants. ||1||
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਸੇਵਾ ਲਾਗੈ ਸਭੁ ਦੇਖੈ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਪਸਾਰੇ ॥
The servant of the Lord, Har, Har, is committed to His service; He sees God pervading the entire expanse of the universe.
ਏਕੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਇਕੁ ਨਦਰੀ ਆਵੈ ਸਭ ਏਕਾ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਰੇ ॥੨॥
He sees the One and only Primal Lord God, who blesses all with His Glance of Grace. ||2||
ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਰਵਿਆ ਸਭ ਠਾਈ ਸਭੁ ਚੇਰੀ ਜਗਤੁ ਸਮਾਰੇ ॥
God, our Lord and Master, is permeating and pervading all places; He takes care of the whole world as His slave.
ਆਪਿ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਦਇਆ ਦਾਨੁ ਦੇਵੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਪਾਥਰ ਕੀਰੇ ਕਾਰੇ ॥੩॥
The Merciful Lord Himself mercifully gives His gifts, even to worms in stones. ||3||
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਵਾਸੁ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਮੁਸਕਾਈ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਭੂਲਾ ਮਿਰਗੁ ਸਿੰਙ੍ਹਾਰੇ ॥
Within the deer is the heavy fragrance of musk, but he is confused and deluded, and he shakes his horns looking for it.
ਬਨੁ ਬਨੁ ਢੂਢਿ ਢੂਢਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਥਾਕੀ ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਘਰਿ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੇ ॥੪॥
Wandering, rambling and roaming through the forests and woods, I exhausted myself, and then in my own home, the Perfect Guru saved me. ||4||
ਬਾਣੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੈ ਬਾਣੀ ਵਿਚਿ ਬਾਣੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਸਾਰੇ ॥
The Word, the Bani is Guru, and Guru is the Bani. Within the Bani, the Ambrosial Nectar is contained.
ਗੁਰੁ ਬਾਣੀ ਕਹੈ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਜਨੁ ਮਾਨੈ ਪਰਤਖਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੇ ॥੫॥
If His humble servant believes, and acts according to the Words of the Guru's Bani, then the Guru, in person, emancipates him. ||5||
ਸਭੁ ਹੈ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਹੈ ਪਸਰਿਆ ਮਨਿ ਬੀਜਿਆ ਖਾਵਾਰੇ ॥
All is God, and God is the whole expanse; man eats what he has planted.
ਜਿਉ ਜਨ ਚੰਦ੍ਰਹਾਂਸੁ ਦੁਖਿਆ ਧ੍ਰਿਸਟਬੁਧੀ ਅਪੁਨਾ ਘਰੁ ਲੂਕੀ ਜਾਰੇ ॥੬॥
When Dhrishtabudhi tormented the humble devotee Chandrahaans, he only set his own house on fire. ||6||
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਉ ਜਨੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਰਿਦ ਲੋਚੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਜਨ ਕੇ ਸਾਸ ਨਿਹਾਰੇ ॥
God's humble servant longs for Him within his heart; God watches over each breath of His humble servant.
ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਏ ਜਨ ਪੀਛੈ ਜਗੁ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੇ ॥੭॥
Mercifully, mercifully, He implants devotion within his humble servant; for his sake, God saves the whole world. ||7||
ਆਪਨ ਆਪਿ ਆਪਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਆਪੇ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਸਵਾਰੇ ॥
God, our Lord and Master, is Himself by Himself; God Himself embellishes the universe.
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਸਭੁ ਵਰਤੈ ਕਰਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਆਪਿ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੇ ॥੮॥੪॥
O servant Nanak, He Himself is all-pervading; in His Mercy, He Himself emancipates all. ||8||4||
ਨਟ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥
Nat, Fourth Mahalaa:
ਰਾਮ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਲੇਹੁ ਉਬਾਰੇ ॥
Grant Your Grace, Lord, and save me,
ਜਿਉ ਪਕਰਿ ਦ੍ਰੋਪਤੀ ਦੁਸਟਾਂ ਆਨੀ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਲਾਜ ਨਿਵਾਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
as You saved Dropadi from shame when she was seized and brought before the court by the evil villains. ||1||Pause||
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਜਾਚਿਕ ਜਨ ਤੇਰੇ ਇਕੁ ਮਾਗਉ ਦਾਨੁ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥
Bless me with Your Grace - I am just a humble beggar of Yours; I beg for a single blessing, O my Beloved.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਨਿਤ ਸਰਧਾ ਲਾਗੀ ਮੋ ਕਉ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਲਿ ਸਵਾਰੇ ॥੧॥
I long constantly for the True Guru. Lead me to meet the Guru, O Lord, that I may be exalted and embellished. ||1||
ਸਾਕਤ ਕਰਮ ਪਾਣੀ ਜਿਉ ਮਥੀਐ ਨਿਤ ਪਾਣੀ ਝੋਲ ਝੁਲਾਰੇ ॥
The actions of the faithless cynic are like the churning of water; he churns, constantly churning only water.
ਮਿਲਿ ਸਤਿਸੰਗਤਿ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਕਢਿ ਮਾਖਨ ਕੇ ਗਟਕਾਰੇ ॥੨॥
Joining the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation, the supreme status is obtained; the butter is produced, and eaten with delight. ||2||
ਨਿਤ ਨਿਤ ਕਾਇਆ ਮਜਨੁ ਕੀਆ ਨਿਤ ਮਲਿ ਮਲਿ ਦੇਹ ਸਵਾਰੇ ॥
He may constantly and continually wash his body; he may constantly rub, clean and polish his body.
ਮੇਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਮਨਿ ਬਚਨ ਨ ਭਾਏ ਸਭ ਫੋਕਟ ਚਾਰ ਸੀਗਾਰੇ ॥੩॥
But if the Word of my True Guru is not pleasing to his mind, then all his preparations and beautiful decorations are useless. ||3||
ਮਟਕਿ ਮਟਕਿ ਚਲੁ ਸਖੀ ਸਹੇਲੀ ਮੇਰੇ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਕੇ ਗੁਨ ਸਾਰੇ ॥
Walk playfully and carefree, O my friends and companions; cherish the Glorious Virtues of my Lord and Master.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੇਵਾ ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਈ ਮੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਅਲਖੁ ਲਖਾਰੇ ॥੪॥
To serve, as Gurmukh, is pleasing to my God. Through the True Guru, the unknown is known. ||4||
ਨਾਰੀ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਸਭ ਨਾਰੀ ਸਭੁ ਏਕੋ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਮੁਰਾਰੇ ॥
Women and men, all the men and women, all came from the One Primal Lord God.
ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਕੀ ਰੇਨੁ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਈ ਮਿਲਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਹਰਿ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੇ ॥੫॥
My mind loves the dust of the feet of the humble; the Lord emancipates those who meet with the Lord's humble servants. ||5||
ਗ੍ਰਾਮ ਗ੍ਰਾਮ ਨਗਰ ਸਭ ਫਿਰਿਆ ਰਿਦ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਭਾਰੇ ॥
From village to village, throughout all the cities I wandered; and then, inspired by the Lord's humble servants, I found Him deep within the nucleus of my heart.
ਸਰਧਾ ਸਰਧਾ ਉਪਾਇ ਮਿਲਾਏ ਮੋ ਕਉ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਗੁਰਿ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੇ ॥੬॥
Faith and longing have welled up within me, and I have been blended with the Lord; the Guru, the Guru, has saved me. ||6||
ਪਵਨ ਸੂਤੁ ਸਭੁ ਨੀਕਾ ਕਰਿਆ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ॥
The thread of my breath has been made totally sublime and pure; I contemplate the Shabad, the Word of the True Guru.
ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਇ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਆ ਬਿਨੁ ਨੈਨਾ ਜਗਤੁ ਨਿਹਾਰੇ ॥੭॥
I came back to the home of my own inner self; drinking in the ambrosial essence, I see the world, without my eyes. ||7||
ਤਉ ਗੁਨ ਈਸ ਬਰਨਿ ਨਹੀ ਸਾਕਉ ਤੁਮ ਮੰਦਰ ਹਮ ਨਿਕ ਕੀਰੇ ॥
I cannot describe Your Glorious Virtues, Lord; You are the temple, and I am just a tiny worm.
ਨਾਨਕ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਹੁ ਗੁਰ ਮੇਲਹੁ ਮੈ ਰਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਮਨੁ ਧੀਰੇ ॥੮॥੫॥
Bless Nanak with Your Mercy, and unite him with the Guru; meditating on my Lord, my mind is comforted and consoled. ||8||5||
ਨਟ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥
Nat, Fourth Mahalaa:
ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਭਜੁ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਅਗਮ ਅਪਾਰੇ ॥
O my mind, vibrate, meditate on the inaccessible and infinite Lord and Master.
ਹਮ ਪਾਪੀ ਬਹੁ ਨਿਰਗੁਣੀਆਰੇ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਗੁਰਿ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
I am such a great sinner; I am so unworthy. And yet the Guru, in His Mercy, has saved me. ||1||Pause||
ਸਾਧੂ ਪੁਰਖ ਸਾਧ ਜਨ ਪਾਏ ਇਕ ਬਿਨਉ ਕਰਉ ਗੁਰ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥
I have found the Holy Person, the Holy and humble servant of the Lord; I offer a prayer to Him, my Beloved Guru.
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਨੁ ਪੂਜੀ ਦੇਵਹੁ ਸਭੁ ਤਿਸਨਾ ਭੂਖ ਨਿਵਾਰੇ ॥੧॥
Please, bless me with the wealth, the capital of the Lord's Name, and take away all my hunger and thirst. ||1||
ਪਚੈ ਪਤੰਗੁ ਮ੍ਰਿਗ ਭ੍ਰਿੰਗ ਕੁੰਚਰ ਮੀਨ ਇਕ ਇੰਦ੍ਰੀ ਪਕਰਿ ਸਘਾਰੇ ॥
The moth, the deer, the bumble bee, the elephant and the fish are ruined, each by the one passion that controls them.
ਪੰਚ ਭੂਤ ਸਬਲ ਹੈ ਦੇਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਪ ਨਿਵਾਰੇ ॥੨॥
The five powerful demons are in the body; the Guru, the True Guru turns out these sins. ||2||
ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਬੇਦ ਸੋਧਿ ਸੋਧਿ ਦੇਖੇ ਮੁਨਿ ਨਾਰਦ ਬਚਨ ਪੁਕਾਰੇ ॥
I searched and searched through the Shaastras and the Vedas; Naarad the silent sage proclaimed these words as well.
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਪੜਹੁ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਵਹੁ ਸਤਿਸੰਗਤਿ ਗੁਰਿ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੇ ॥੩॥
Chanting the Lord's Name, salvation is attained; the Guru saves those in the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation. ||3||
ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਲਗੀ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੇਰੀ ਜਿਵ ਸੂਰਜੁ ਕਮਲੁ ਨਿਹਾਰੇ ॥
In love with the Beloved Lord God, one looks at Him as the lotus looks at the sun.
ਮੇਰ ਸੁਮੇਰ ਮੋਰੁ ਬਹੁ ਨਾਚੈ ਜਬ ਉਨਵੈ ਘਨ ਘਨਹਾਰੇ ॥੪॥
The peacock dances on the mountain, when the clouds hang low and heavy. ||4||
ਸਾਕਤ ਕਉ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਹੁ ਸਿੰਚਹੁ ਸਭ ਡਾਲ ਫੂਲ ਬਿਸੁਕਾਰੇ ॥
The faithless cynic may be totally drenched with ambrosial nectar, but even so, all his branches and flowers are filled with venom.
ਜਿਉ ਜਿਉ ਨਿਵਹਿ ਸਾਕਤ ਨਰ ਸੇਤੀ ਛੇੜਿ ਛੇੜਿ ਕਢੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਰੇ ॥੫॥
The more one bows down in humility before the faithless cynic, the more he provokes, and stabs, and spits out his poison. ||5||
ਸੰਤਨ ਸੰਤ ਸਾਧ ਮਿਲਿ ਰਹੀਐ ਗੁਣ ਬੋਲਹਿ ਪਰਉਪਕਾਰੇ ॥
Remain with the Holy man, the Saint of the Saints, who chants the Lord's Praises for the benefit of all.
ਸੰਤੈ ਸੰਤੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਨੁ ਬਿਗਸੈ ਜਿਉ ਜਲ ਮਿਲਿ ਕਮਲ ਸਵਾਰੇ ॥੬॥
Meeting the Saint of Saints, the mind blossoms forth, like the lotus, exalted by obtaining the water. ||6||
ਲੋਭ ਲਹਰਿ ਸਭੁ ਸੁਆਨੁ ਹਲਕੁ ਹੈ ਹਲਕਿਓ ਸਭਹਿ ਬਿਗਾਰੇ ॥
The waves of greed are like mad dogs with rabies. Their madness ruins everything.
ਮੇਰੇ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਕੈ ਦੀਬਾਨਿ ਖਬਰਿ ਹੋੁਈ ਗੁਰਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਖੜਗੁ ਲੈ ਮਾਰੇ ॥੭॥
When the news reached the Court of my Lord and Master, the Guru took up the sword of spiritual wisdom, and killed them. ||7||
ਰਾਖੁ ਰਾਖੁ ਰਾਖੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮੇਰੇ ਮੈ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰੇ ॥
Save me, save me, save me, O my God; shower me with Your Mercy, and save me!
ਨਾਨਕ ਮੈ ਧਰ ਅਵਰ ਨ ਕਾਈ ਮੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੇ ॥੮॥੬॥ ਛਕਾ ੧ ॥
O Nanak, I have no other support; the Guru, the True Guru, has saved me. ||8||6|| First Set of Six Hymns

ਕਾਨੜਾ ਅਸਟਪਦੀਆ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ਘਰੁ ੧ ॥
Kaanraa, Ashtapadees, Fourth Mahalaa, First House:
ਜਪਿ ਮਨ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈਗੋ ॥
Chant the Name of the Lord, O mind, and find peace.
ਜਿਉ ਜਿਉ ਜਪੈ ਤਿਵੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਸਮਾਵੈਗੋ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
The more you chant and meditate, the more you will be at peace; serve the True Guru, and merge in the Lord. ||1||Pause||
ਭਗਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਕੀ ਖਿਨੁ ਖਿਨੁ ਲੋਚਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈਗੋ ॥
Each and every instant, the humble devotees long for Him; chanting the Naam, they find peace.
ਅਨ ਰਸ ਸਾਦ ਗਏ ਸਭਿ ਨੀਕਰਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕਿਛੁ ਨ ਸੁਖਾਵੈਗੋ ॥੧॥
The taste of other pleasures is totally eradicated; nothing pleases them, except the Name. ||1||
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਮੀਠਾ ਲਾਗਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਮੀਠੇ ਬਚਨ ਕਢਾਵੈਗੋ ॥
Following the Guru's Teachings, the Lord seems sweet to them; the Guru inspires them to speak sweet words.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਾਣੀ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਪੁਰਖੋਤਮ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਿਉ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਵੈਗੋ ॥੨॥
Through the Word of the True Guru's Bani, the Primal Lord God is revealed; so focus your consciousness on His Bani. ||2||
ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਸੁਨਤ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਦ੍ਰਵਿਆ ਮਨੁ ਭੀਨਾ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਆਵੈਗੋ ॥
Hearing the Word of the Guru's Bani, my mind has been softened and saturated with it; my mind has returned to its own home deep within.
ਤਹ ਅਨਹਤ ਧੁਨੀ ਬਾਜਹਿ ਨਿਤ ਬਾਜੇ ਨੀਝਰ ਧਾਰ ਚੁਆਵੈਗੋ ॥੩॥
The Unstruck Melody resonates and resounds there continuously; the stream of nectar trickles down constantly. ||3||
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਇਕੁ ਤਿਲ ਤਿਲ ਗਾਵੈ ਮਨੁ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਵੈਗੋ ॥
Singing the Name of the One Lord each and every instant, and following the Guru's Teachings, the mind is absorbed in the Naam.
ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਣੈ ਨਾਮੋ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵੈ ਨਾਮੇ ਹੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਵੈਗੋ ॥੪॥
Listening to the Naam, the mind is pleased with the Naam, and satisfied with the Naam. ||4||
ਕਨਿਕ ਕਨਿਕ ਪਹਿਰੇ ਬਹੁ ਕੰਗਨਾ ਕਾਪਰੁ ਭਾਂਤਿ ਬਨਾਵੈਗੋ ॥
People wear lots of bracelets, glittering with gold; they wear all sorts of fine clothes.
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਸਭਿ ਫੀਕ ਫਿਕਾਨੇ ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਆਵੈਗੋ ॥੫॥
But without the Naam, they are all bland and insipid. They are born, only to die again, in the cycle of reincarnation. ||5||
ਮਾਇਆ ਪਟਲ ਪਟਲ ਹੈ ਭਾਰੀ ਘਰੁ ਘੂਮਨਿ ਘੇਰਿ ਘੁਲਾਵੈਗੋ ॥
The veil of Maya is a thick and heavy veil, a whirlpool which destroys one's home.
ਪਾਪ ਬਿਕਾਰ ਮਨੂਰ ਸਭਿ ਭਾਰੇ ਬਿਖੁ ਦੁਤਰੁ ਤਰਿਓ ਨ ਜਾਵੈਗੋ ॥੬॥
Sins and corrupt vices are totally heavy, like rusted slag. They will not let you cross over the poisonous and treacherous world-ocean. ||6||
ਭਉ ਬੈਰਾਗੁ ਭਇਆ ਹੈ ਬੋਹਿਥੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਖੇਵਟੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਤਰਾਵੈਗੋ ॥
Let the Fear of God and neutral detachment be the boat; the Guru is the Boatman, who carries us across in the Word of the Shabad.
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਰਿ ਭੇਟੀਐ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਮੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਵੈਗੋ ॥੭॥
Meeting with the Lord, the Name of the Lord, merge in the Lord, the Name of the Lord. ||7||
ਅਗਿਆਨਿ ਲਾਇ ਸਵਾਲਿਆ ਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨੈ ਲਾਇ ਜਗਾਵੈਗੋ ॥
Attached to ignorance, people are falling asleep; attached to the Guru's spiritual wisdom, they awaken.
ਨਾਨਕ ਭਾਣੈ ਆਪਣੈ ਜਿਉ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਵੈ ਚਲਾਵੈਗੋ ॥੮॥੧॥
O Nanak, by His Will, He makes us walk as He pleases. ||8||1||
ਕਾਨੜਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥
Kaanraa, Fourth Mahalaa:
ਜਪਿ ਮਨ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਤਰਾਵੈਗੋ ॥
O mind, chant the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, and be carried across.
ਜੋ ਜੋ ਜਪੈ ਸੋਈ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਵੈ ਜਿਉ ਧ੍ਰੂ ਪ੍ਰਹਿਲਾਦੁ ਸਮਾਵੈਗੋ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Whoever chants and meditates on it is emancipated. Like Dhroo and Prahlaad, they merge in the Lord. ||1||Pause||
ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਗਾਵੈਗੋ ॥
Mercy, mercy, mercy - O Dear Lord, please shower Your Mercy on me, and attach me to Your Name.
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਾਵਹੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵੈਗੋ ॥੧॥
Please be Merciful, and lead me to meet the True Guru; meeting the True Guru, I meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||1||
ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਕੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਲੁ ਲਾਗੀ ਮਿਲਿ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਲੁ ਲਹਿ ਜਾਵੈਗੋ ॥
The filth of egotism from countless incarnations sticks to me; joining the Sangat, the Holy Congregation, this filth is washed away.
ਜਿਉ ਲੋਹਾ ਤਰਿਓ ਸੰਗਿ ਕਾਸਟ ਲਗਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਵੈਗੋ ॥੨॥
As iron is carried across if it is attached to wood, one who is attached to the Word of the Guru's Shabad finds the Lord. ||2||
ਸੰਗਤਿ ਸੰਤ ਮਿਲਹੁ ਸਤਿਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਆਵੈਗੋ ॥
Joining the Society of the Saints, joining the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation, you shall come to receive the Sublime Essence of the Lord.
ਬਿਨੁ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੈ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੀ ਕਢਿ ਪਾਣੀ ਚੀਕੜੁ ਪਾਵੈਗੋ ॥੩॥
But not joining the Sangat, and committing actions in egotistical pride, is like drawing out clean water, and throwing it in the mud. ||3||
ਭਗਤ ਜਨਾ ਕੇ ਹਰਿ ਰਖਵਾਰੇ ਜਨ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਮੀਠ ਲਗਾਵੈਗੋ ॥
The Lord is the Protector and Saving Grace of His humble devotees. The Lord's Sublime Essence seems so sweet to these humble beings.
ਖਿਨੁ ਖਿਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੇਇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਉਪਦੇਸਿ ਸਮਾਵੈਗੋ ॥੪॥
Each and every instant, they are blessed with the Glorious Greatness of the Naam; through the Teachings of the True Guru, they are absorbed in Him. ||4||
ਭਗਤ ਜਨਾ ਕਉ ਸਦਾ ਨਿਵਿ ਰਹੀਐ ਜਨ ਨਿਵਹਿ ਤਾ ਫਲ ਗੁਨ ਪਾਵੈਗੋ ॥
Bow forever in deep respect to the humble devotees; if you bow to those humble beings, you shall obtain the fruit of virtue.
ਜੋ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਦੁਸਟ ਕਰਹਿ ਭਗਤਾ ਕੀ ਹਰਨਾਖਸ ਜਿਉ ਪਚਿ ਜਾਵੈਗੋ ॥੫॥
Those wicked enemies who slander the devotees are destroyed, like Harnaakhash. ||5||
ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਕਮਲ ਪੁਤੁ ਮੀਨ ਬਿਆਸਾ ਤਪੁ ਤਾਪਨ ਪੂਜ ਕਰਾਵੈਗੋ ॥
Brahma, the son of the lotus, and Vyaas, the son of the fish, practiced austere penance and were worshipped.
ਜੋ ਜੋ ਭਗਤੁ ਹੋਇ ਸੋ ਪੂਜਹੁ ਭਰਮਨ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਵੈਗੋ ॥੬॥
Whoever is a devotee - worship and adore that person. Get rid of your doubts and superstitions. ||6||
ਜਾਤ ਨਜਾਤਿ ਦੇਖਿ ਮਤ ਭਰਮਹੁ ਸੁਕ ਜਨਕ ਪਗੀਂ ਲਗਿ ਧਿਆਵੈਗੋ ॥
Do not be fooled by appearances of high and low social class. Suk Dayv bowed at the feet of Janak, and meditated.
ਜੂਠਨ ਜੂਠਿ ਪਈ ਸਿਰ ਊਪਰਿ ਖਿਨੁ ਮਨੂਆ ਤਿਲੁ ਨ ਡੁਲਾਵੈਗੋ ॥੭॥
Even though Janak threw his left-overs and garbage on Suk Dayv's head, his mind did not waver, even for an instant. ||7||
ਜਨਕ ਜਨਕ ਬੈਠੇ ਸਿੰਘਾਸਨਿ ਨਉ ਮੁਨੀ ਧੂਰਿ ਲੈ ਲਾਵੈਗੋ ॥
Janak sat upon his regal throne, and applied the dust of the nine sages to his forehead.
ਨਾਨਕ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਿ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਮੈ ਦਾਸਨਿ ਦਾਸ ਕਰਾਵੈਗੋ ॥੮॥੨॥
Please shower Nanak with your Mercy, O my Lord and Master; make him the slave of Your slaves. ||8||2||
ਕਾਨੜਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥
Kaanraa, Fourth Mahalaa:
ਮਨੁ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਰਸਿ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵੈਗੋ ॥
O mind, follow the Guru's Teachings, and joyfully sing God's Praises.
ਜਿਹਵਾ ਏਕ ਹੋਇ ਲਖ ਕੋਟੀ ਲਖ ਕੋਟੀ ਕੋਟਿ ਧਿਆਵੈਗੋ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
If my one tongue became hundreds of thousands and millions, I would meditate on Him millions and millions of times. ||1||Pause||
ਸਹਸ ਫਨੀ ਜਪਿਓ ਸੇਖਨਾਗੈ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਤਿਆ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਵੈਗੋ ॥
The serpent king chants and meditates on the Lord with his thousands of heads, but even by these chants, he cannot find the Lord's limits.
ਤੂ ਅਥਾਹੁ ਅਤਿ ਅਗਮੁ ਅਗਮੁ ਹੈ ਮਤਿ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਮਨੁ ਠਹਰਾਵੈਗੋ ॥੧॥
You are Utterly Unfathomable, Inaccessible and Infinite. Through the Wisdom of the Guru's Teachings, the mind becomes steady and balanced. ||1||
ਜਿਨ ਤੂ ਜਪਿਓ ਤੇਈ ਜਨ ਨੀਕੇ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਤਿਅਹੁ ਕਉ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈਗੋ ॥
Those humble beings who meditate on You are noble and exalted. Meditating on the Lord, they are at peace.
ਬਿਦਰ ਦਾਸੀ ਸੁਤੁ ਛੋਕ ਛੋਹਰਾ ਕ੍ਰਿਸਨੁ ਅੰਕਿ ਗਲਿ ਲਾਵੈਗੋ ॥੨॥
Bidur, the son of a slave-girl, was an untouchable, but Krishna hugged him close in His Embrace. ||2||
ਜਲ ਤੇ ਓਪਤਿ ਭਈ ਹੈ ਕਾਸਟ ਕਾਸਟ ਅੰਗਿ ਤਰਾਵੈਗੋ ॥
Wood is produced from water, but by holding onto wood, one is saved from drowning.
ਰਾਮ ਜਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਆਪਿ ਸਵਾਰੇ ਅਪਨਾ ਬਿਰਦੁ ਰਖਾਵੈਗੋ ॥੩॥
The Lord Himself embellishes and exalts His humble servants; He confirms His Innate Nature. ||3||
ਹਮ ਪਾਥਰ ਲੋਹ ਲੋਹ ਬਡ ਪਾਥਰ ਗੁਰ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਨਾਵ ਤਰਾਵੈਗੋ ॥
I am like a stone, or a piece of iron, heavy stone and iron; in the Boat of the Guru's Congregation, I am carried across,
ਜਿਉ ਸਤਿਸੰਗਤਿ ਤਰਿਓ ਜੁਲਾਹੋ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵੈਗੋ ॥੪॥
like Kabeer the weaver, who was saved in the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation. He became pleasing to the minds of the humble Saints. ||4||
ਖਰੇ ਖਰੋਏ ਬੈਠਤ ਊਠਤ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਪੰਥਿ ਧਿਆਵੈਗੋ ॥
Standing up, sitting down, rising up and walking on the path, I meditate.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਬਚਨੁ ਬਚਨੁ ਹੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਧਰੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਜਨਾਵੈਗੋ ॥੫॥
The True Guru is the Word, and the Word is the True Guru, who teaches the Path of Liberation. ||5||
ਸਾਸਨਿ ਸਾਸਿ ਸਾਸਿ ਬਲੁ ਪਾਈ ਹੈ ਨਿਹਸਾਸਨਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵੈਗੋ ॥
By His Training, I find strength with each and every breath; now that I am trained and tamed, I meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਬੂਝੈ ਤੌ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਵੈਗੋ ॥੬॥
By Guru's Grace, egotism is extinguished, and then, through the Guru's Teachings, I merge in the Naam. ||6||
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਜੀਅ ਜੀਅਨ ਕੋ ਭਾਗਹੀਨ ਨਹੀ ਭਾਵੈਗੋ ॥
The True Guru is the Giver of the life of the soul, but the unfortunate ones do not love Him.
ਫਿਰਿ ਏਹ ਵੇਲਾ ਹਾਥਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਪਰਤਾਪੈ ਪਛੁਤਾਵੈਗੋ ॥੭॥
This opportunity shall not come into their hands again; in the end, they will suffer in torment and regret. ||7||
ਜੇ ਕੋ ਭਲਾ ਲੋੜੈ ਭਲ ਅਪਨਾ ਗੁਰ ਆਗੈ ਢਹਿ ਢਹਿ ਪਾਵੈਗੋ ॥
If a good person seeks goodness for himself, he should bow low in humble surrender to the Guru.
ਨਾਨਕ ਦਇਆ ਦਇਆ ਕਰਿ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਮੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਸਮ ਲਗਾਵੈਗੋ ॥੮॥੩॥
Nanak prays: please show kindness and compassion to me, O my Lord and Master, that I may apply the dust of the True Guru to my forehead. ||8||3||
ਕਾਨੜਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥
Kaanraa, Fourth Mahalaa:
ਮਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤਾ ਗਾਵੈਗੋ ॥
O mind, be attuned to His Love, and sing.
ਭੈ ਭੈ ਤ੍ਰਾਸ ਭਏ ਹੈ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਲਾਗਿ ਲਗਾਵੈਗੋ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
The Fear of God makes me fearless and immaculate; I am dyed in the color of the Guru's Teachings. ||1||Pause||
ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤਾ ਸਦ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਹਰਿ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਤਿਨਾ ਘਰਿ ਆਵੈਗੋ ॥
Those who are attuned to the Lord's Love remain balanced and detached forever; they live near the Lord, who comes into their house.
ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਪੰਕ ਮਿਲੈ ਤਾਂ ਜੀਵਾ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਆਪਿ ਦਿਵਾਵੈਗੋ ॥੧॥
If I am blessed with the dust of their feet, then I live. Granting His Grace, He Himself bestows it. ||1||
ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਲੋਭਿ ਲਗੇ ਹੈ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਮਨਿ ਕੋਰੈ ਰੰਗੁ ਨ ਆਵੈਗੋ ॥
Mortal beings are attached to greed and duality. Their minds are unripe and unfit, and will not accept the Dye of His Love.
ਫਿਰਿ ਉਲਟਿਓ ਜਨਮੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਰੰਗੁ ਲਾਵੈਗੋ ॥੨॥
But their lives are transformed through the Word of the Guru's Teachings. Meeting with the Guru, the Primal Being, they are dyed in the color of His Love. ||2||
ਇੰਦ੍ਰੀ ਦਸੇ ਦਸੇ ਫੁਨਿ ਧਾਵਤ ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣੀਆ ਖਿਨੁ ਨ ਟਿਕਾਵੈਗੋ ॥
There are ten organs of sense and action; the ten wander unrestrained. Under the influence of the three dispositions, they are not stable, even for an instant.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪਰਚੈ ਵਸਗਤਿ ਆਵੈ ਮੋਖ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਸੋ ਪਾਵੈਗੋ ॥੩॥
Coming in contact with the True Guru, they are brought under control; then, salvation and liberation are attained. ||3||
ਓਅੰਕਾਰਿ ਏਕੋ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਭੁ ਏਕਸ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਵੈਗੋ ॥
The One and Only Creator of the Universe is All-pervading everywhere. All shall once again merge into the One.
ਏਕੋ ਰੂਪੁ ਏਕੋ ਬਹੁ ਰੰਗੀ ਸਭੁ ਏਕਤੁ ਬਚਨਿ ਚਲਾਵੈਗੋ ॥੪॥
His One Form has one, and many colors; He leads all according to His One Word. ||4||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਏਕੋ ਏਕੁ ਪਛਾਤਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਇ ਲਖਾਵੈਗੋ ॥
The Gurmukh realizes the One and Only Lord; He is revealed to the Gurmukh.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਇ ਮਿਲੈ ਨਿਜ ਮਹਲੀ ਅਨਹਦ ਸਬਦੁ ਬਜਾਵੈਗੋ ॥੫॥
The Gurmukh goes and meets the Lord in His Mansion deep within; the Unstruck Word of the Shabad vibrates there. ||5||
ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਸਭ ਸਿਸਟਿ ਉਪਾਈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਵੈਗੋ ॥
God created all the beings and creatures of the universe; He blesses the Gurmukh with glory.
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਭੇਟੇ ਕੋ ਮਹਲੁ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ਆਇ ਜਾਇ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈਗੋ ॥੬॥
Without meeting the Guru, no one obtains the Mansion of His Presence. They suffer the agony of coming and going in reincarnation. ||6||
ਅਨੇਕ ਜਨਮ ਵਿਛੁੜੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਾਵੈਗੋ ॥
For countless lifetimes, I have been separated from my Beloved; in His Mercy, the Guru has united me with Him.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਤ ਮਹਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਮਤਿ ਮਲੀਨ ਬਿਗਸਾਵੈਗੋ ॥੭॥
Meeting the True Guru, I have found absolute peace, and my polluted intellect blossoms forth. ||7||
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਹੁ ਜਗਜੀਵਨ ਮੈ ਸਰਧਾ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਗਾਵੈਗੋ ॥
O Lord, Har, Har, please grant Your Grace; O Life of the World, instill faith in the Naam within me.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਰਨਿ ਮਿਲਾਵੈਗੋ ॥੮॥੪॥
Nanak is the Guru, the Guru, the True Guru; I am immersed in the Sanctuary of the True Guru. ||8||4||
ਕਾਨੜਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥
Kaanraa, Fourth Mahalaa:
ਮਨ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਚਾਲ ਚਲਾਵੈਗੋ ॥
O mind, walk on the Path of the Guru's Teachings.
ਜਿਉ ਮੈਗਲੁ ਮਸਤੁ ਦੀਜੈ ਤਲਿ ਕੁੰਡੇ ਗੁਰ ਅੰਕਸੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਵੈਗੋ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Just as the wild elephant is subdued by the prod, the mind is disciplined by the Word of the Guru's Shabad. ||1||Pause||
ਚਲਤੌ ਚਲੈ ਚਲੈ ਦਹ ਦਹ ਦਿਸਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਰਾਖੈ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਵੈਗੋ ॥
The wandering mind wanders, roams and rambles in the ten directions; but the Guru holds it, and lovingly attunes it to the Lord.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਦੇਇ ਰਿਦ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਚੁਆਵੈਗੋ ॥੧॥
The True Guru implants the Word of the Shabad deep within the heart; the Ambrosial Naam, the Name of the Lord, trickles into the mouth. ||1||
ਬਿਸੀਅਰ ਬਿਸੂ ਭਰੇ ਹੈ ਪੂਰਨ ਗੁਰੁ ਗਰੁੜ ਸਬਦੁ ਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਵੈਗੋ ॥
The snakes are filled with poisonous venom; the Word of the Guru's Shabad is the antidote - place it in your mouth.
ਮਾਇਆ ਭੁਇਅੰਗ ਤਿਸੁ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਝਾਰਿ ਝਾਰਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਵੈਗੋ ॥੨॥
Maya, the serpent, does not even approach one who is rid of the poison, and lovingly attuned to the Lord. ||2||
ਸੁਆਨੁ ਲੋਭੁ ਨਗਰ ਮਹਿ ਸਬਲਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਮਾਰਿ ਕਢਾਵੈਗੋ ॥
The dog of greed is very powerful in the village of the body; the Guru strikes it and drives it out in an instant.
ਸਤੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਧਰਮੁ ਆਨਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਹਰਿ ਨਗਰੀ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵੈਗੋ ॥੩॥
Truth, contentment, righteousness and Dharma have settled there; in the village of the Lord, sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||3||
ਪੰਕਜਿ ਮੋਹ ਨਿਘਰਤ ਹੈ ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਨਿਘਰਤ ਕਾਢਿ ਕਢਾਵੈਗੋ ॥
The mortal beings are sinking in the swamp of emotional attachment; the Guru lifts them up, and saves them from sinking.
ਤ੍ਰਾਹਿ ਤ੍ਰਾਹਿ ਸਰਨਿ ਜਨ ਆਏ ਗੁਰੁ ਹਾਥੀ ਦੇ ਨਿਕਲਾਵੈਗੋ ॥੪॥
Crying, "Save me! Save me!", the humble come to His Sanctuary; the Guru reaches out His Hand, and lifts them up. ||4||
ਸੁਪਨੰਤਰੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਸਭੁ ਬਾਜੀ ਸਭੁ ਬਾਜੀ ਖੇਲੁ ਖਿਲਾਵੈਗੋ ॥
The whole world is like a game in a dream, all a game. God plays and causes the game to be played.
ਲਾਹਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਲੈ ਚਾਲਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਪੈਧਾ ਜਾਵੈਗੋ ॥੫॥
So earn the Profit of the Naam by following the Guru's Teachings; you shall go to the Court of the Lord in robes of honor. ||5||
ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰੈ ਕਰਾਵੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਪਾਪ ਕੋਇਲੇ ਆਨਿ ਜਮਾਵੈਗੋ ॥
They act in egotism, and make others act in egotism; they collect and gather up the blackness of sin.
ਆਇਆ ਕਾਲੁ ਦੁਖਦਾਈ ਹੋਏ ਜੋ ਬੀਜੇ ਸੋ ਖਵਲਾਵੈਗੋ ॥੬॥
And when death comes, they suffer in agony; they must eat what they have planted. ||6||
ਸੰਤਹੁ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਨੁ ਸੰਚਹੁ ਲੈ ਖਰਚੁ ਚਲੇ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਵੈਗੋ ॥
O Saints, gather the Wealth of the Lord's Name; if you depart after packing these provisions, you shall be honored.
ਖਾਇ ਖਰਚਿ ਦੇਵਹਿ ਬਹੁਤੇਰਾ ਹਰਿ ਦੇਦੇ ਤੋਟਿ ਨ ਆਵੈਗੋ ॥੭॥
So eat, spend, consume and give abundantly; the Lord will give - there will be no deficiency. ||7||
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਧਨੁ ਹੈ ਰਿਦ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਧਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਰਣਾਈ ਪਾਵੈਗੋ ॥
The wealth of the Lord's Name is deep within the heart. In the Sanctuary of the Guru, this wealth is found.
ਨਾਨਕ ਦਇਆ ਦਇਆ ਕਰਿ ਦੀਨੀ ਦੁਖੁ ਦਾਲਦੁ ਭੰਜਿ ਸਮਾਵੈਗੋ ॥੮॥੫॥
O Nanak, God has been kind and compassionate; He has blessed me. Removing pain and poverty, He has blended me with Himself. ||8||5||
ਕਾਨੜਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥
Kaanraa, Fourth Mahalaa:
ਮਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਰਨਿ ਧਿਆਵੈਗੋ ॥
O mind, seek the Sanctuary of the True Guru, and meditate.
ਲੋਹਾ ਹਿਰਨੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਪਾਰਸ ਗੁਨੁ ਪਾਰਸ ਕੋ ਹੋਇ ਆਵੈਗੋ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Iron is transformed into gold by touching the philosopher's stone; it takes on its qualities. ||1||Pause||
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਹਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਹੈ ਪਾਰਸੁ ਜੋ ਲਾਗੈ ਸੋ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਵੈਗੋ ॥
The True Guru, the Great Primal Being, is the philosopher's stone. Whoever is attached to Him receives fruitful rewards.
ਜਿਉ ਗੁਰ ਉਪਦੇਸਿ ਤਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਹਿਲਾਦਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਕ ਪੈਜ ਰਖਾਵੈਗੋ ॥੧॥
Just as Prahlaad was saved by the Guru's Teachings, the Guru protects the honor of His servant. ||1||
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੁ ਬਚਨੁ ਹੈ ਨੀਕੋ ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪਾਵੈਗੋ ॥
The Word of the True Guru is the most Sublime and Noble Word. Through the Guru's Word, the Ambrosial Nectar is obtained.
ਜਿਉ ਅੰਬਰੀਕਿ ਅਮਰਾ ਪਦ ਪਾਏ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮੁਖ ਬਚਨ ਧਿਆਵੈਗੋ ॥੨॥
Ambreek the king was blessed with the status of immortality, meditating on the Word of the True Guru. ||2||
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਰਨਿ ਸਰਨਿ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਈ ਸੁਧਾ ਸੁਧਾ ਕਰਿ ਧਿਆਵੈਗੋ ॥
The Sanctuary, the Protection and Sanctuary of the True Guru is pleasing to the mind. It is sacred and pure - meditate on it.
ਦਇਆਲ ਦੀਨ ਭਏ ਹਹਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਰਿ ਮਾਰਗੁ ਪੰਥੁ ਦਿਖਾਵੈਗੋ ॥੩॥
The True Guru has become Merciful to the meek and the poor; He has shown me the Path, the Way to the Lord. ||3||
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਰਨਿ ਪਏ ਸੇ ਥਾਪੇ ਤਿਨ ਰਾਖਨ ਕਉ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਆਵੈਗੋ ॥
Those who enter the Sanctuary of the True Guru are firmly established; God comes to protect them.
ਜੇ ਕੋ ਸਰੁ ਸੰਧੈ ਜਨ ਊਪਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਉਲਟੋ ਤਿਸੈ ਲਗਾਵੈਗੋ ॥੪॥
If someone aims an arrow at the Lord's humble servant, it will turn around and hit him instead. ||4||
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਸਰੁ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਤਿਨ ਦਰਗਹ ਮਾਨੁ ਦਿਵਾਵੈਗੋ ॥
Those who bathe in the Sacred Pool of the Lord, Har, Har, Har, Har, Har, are blessed with honor in His Court.
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਧਿਆਵਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਗਲਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਵੈਗੋ ॥੫॥
Those who meditate on the Guru's Teachings, the Guru's Instructions, the Guru's Wisdom, are united in the Lord's Union; He hugs them close in His Embrace. ||5||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਦੁ ਬੇਦੁ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਚੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵੈਗੋ ॥
The Guru's Word is the Sound-current of the Naad, The Guru's Word is the wisdom of the Vedas; coming in contact with the Guru, meditate on the Naam.
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਰੂਪੁ ਹਰਿ ਰੂਪੋ ਹੋਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਕਉ ਪੂਜ ਕਰਾਵੈਗੋ ॥੬॥
In the Image of the Lord, Har, Har, one becomes the Embodiment of the Lord. The Lord makes His humble servant worthy of worship. ||6||
ਸਾਕਤ ਨਰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਨਹੀ ਕੀਆ ਤੇ ਬੇਮੁਖ ਹਰਿ ਭਰਮਾਵੈਗੋ ॥
The faithless cynic does not submit to the True Guru; the Lord makes the non-believer wander in confusion.
ਲੋਭ ਲਹਰਿ ਸੁਆਨ ਕੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਰੰਗਿ ਲਗਾਵੈਗੋ ॥੭॥
The waves of greed are like packs of dogs. The poison of Maya sticks to the body-skeleton. ||7||
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਭ ਜਗ ਕਾ ਤਾਰਕੁ ਲਗਿ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵੈਗੋ ॥
The Lord's Name is the Saving Grace of the whole world; join the Sangat, and meditate on the Naam.
ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਖੁ ਰਾਖੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਤਿਸੰਗਤਿ ਰਾਖਿ ਸਮਾਵੈਗੋ ॥੮॥੬॥ ਛਕਾ ੧ ॥
O my God, please protect and preserve Nanak in the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation; save him, and let him merge in You. ||8||6|| First Set of Six
ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:
ਕਲਿਆਨ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ਅਸਟਪਦੀਆ ॥
Kalyaan, Fourth Mahalaa, Ashtapadees:
ਰਾਮਾ ਰਮ ਰਾਮੋ ਸੁਨਿ ਮਨੁ ਭੀਜੈ ॥
Hearing the Name of the Lord, the All-pervading Lord, my mind is drenched with joy.
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਰਸੁ ਮੀਠਾ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸਹਜੇ ਪੀਜੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
The Name of the Lord, Har, Har, is Ambrosial Nectar, the most Sweet and Sublime Essence; through the Guru's Teachings, drink it in with intuitive ease. ||1||Pause||
ਕਾਸਟ ਮਹਿ ਜਿਉ ਹੈ ਬੈਸੰਤਰੁ ਮਥਿ ਸੰਜਮਿ ਕਾਢਿ ਕਢੀਜੈ ॥
The potential energy of fire is within the wood; it is released if you know how to rub it and generate friction.
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਹੈ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਬਾਈ ਤਤੁ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਕਾਢਿ ਲਈਜੈ ॥੧॥
In just the same way, the Lord's Name is the Light within all; the Essence is extracted by following the Guru's Teachings. ||1||
ਨਉ ਦਰਵਾਜ ਨਵੇ ਦਰ ਫੀਕੇ ਰਸੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਦਸਵੇ ਚੁਈਜੈ ॥
There are nine doors, but the taste of these nine doors is bland and insipid. The Essence of Ambrosial Nectar trickles down through the Tenth Door.
ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰਿ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਜੈ ॥੨॥
Please take pity on me - be kind and compassionate, O my Beloved, that I may drink in the Sublime Essence of the Lord, through the Word of the Guru's Shabad. ||2||
ਕਾਇਆ ਨਗਰੁ ਨਗਰੁ ਹੈ ਨੀਕੋ ਵਿਚਿ ਸਉਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਕੀਜੈ ॥
The body-village is the most sublime and exalted village, in which the merchandise of the Lord's Sublime Essence is traded.
ਰਤਨ ਲਾਲ ਅਮੋਲ ਅਮੋਲਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਲੀਜੈ ॥੩॥
The most precious and priceless gems and jewels are obtained by serving the True Guru. ||3||
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਅਗਮੁ ਅਗਮੁ ਹੈ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਭਰਿ ਸਾਗਰ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰੀਜੈ ॥
The True Guru is Inaccessible; Inaccessible is our Lord and Master. He is the overflowing Ocean of bliss - worship Him with loving devotion.
ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਿ ਦੀਨ ਹਮ ਸਾਰਿੰਗ ਇਕ ਬੂੰਦ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੁਖਿ ਦੀਜੈ ॥੪॥
Please take pity on me, and be Merciful to this meek song-bird; please pour a drop of Your Name into my mouth. ||4||
ਲਾਲਨੁ ਲਾਲੁ ਲਾਲੁ ਹੈ ਰੰਗਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਰੰਗਨ ਕਉ ਗੁਰ ਦੀਜੈ ॥
O Beloved Lord, please color my mind with the Deep Crimson Color of Your Love; I have surrendered my mind to the Guru.
ਰਾਮ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਮ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਰਸ ਰਸਿਕ ਗਟਕ ਨਿਤ ਪੀਜੈ ॥੫॥
Those who are imbued with the Love of the Lord, Raam, Raam, Raam, continually drink in this essence in big gulps, savoring its sweet taste. ||5||
ਬਸੁਧਾ ਸਪਤ ਦੀਪ ਹੈ ਸਾਗਰ ਕਢਿ ਕੰਚਨੁ ਕਾਢਿ ਧਰੀਜੈ ॥
If all the gold of the seven continents and the oceans was taken out and placed before them,
ਮੇਰੇ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਕੇ ਜਨ ਇਨਹੁ ਨ ਬਾਛਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਮਾਗਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਦੀਜੈ ॥੬॥
the humble servants of my Lord and Master would not even want it. They beg for the Lord to bless them with the Lord's Sublime Essence. ||6||
ਸਾਕਤ ਨਰ ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ਸਦ ਭੂਖੇ ਨਿਤ ਭੂਖਨ ਭੂਖ ਕਰੀਜੈ ॥
The faithless cynics and mortal beings remain hungry forever; they continually cry out in hunger.
ਧਾਵਤੁ ਧਾਇ ਧਾਵਹਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਲਖ ਕੋਸਨ ਕਉ ਬਿਥਿ ਦੀਜੈ ॥੭॥
They hurry and run, and wander all around, caught in the love of Maya; they cover hundreds of thousands of miles in their wanderings. ||7||
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਊਤਮ ਕਿਆ ਉਪਮਾ ਤਿਨੑ ਦੀਜੈ ॥
The humble servants of the Lord, Har, Har, Har, Har, Har, are sublime and exalted. What praise can we bestow upon them?
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਤੁਲਿ ਅਉਰੁ ਨ ਉਪਮਾ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੀਜੈ ॥੮॥੧॥
Nothing else can equal the Glory of the Lord's Name; please bless servant Nanak with Your Grace. ||8||1||
ਕਲਿਆਨ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥

ਰਾਮ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਰਸੁ ਪਰਸੁ ਕਰੀਜੈ ॥
O Lord, please bless me with the Touch of the Guru, the Philosopher's Stone.
ਹਮ ਨਿਰਗੁਣੀ ਮਨੂਰ ਅਤਿ ਫੀਕੇ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪਾਰਸੁ ਕੀਜੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
I was unworthy, utterly useless, rusty slag; meeting with the True Guru, I was transformed by the Philosopher's Stone. ||1||Pause||
ਸੁਰਗ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਬੈਕੁੰਠ ਸਭਿ ਬਾਂਛਹਿ ਨਿਤਿ ਆਸਾ ਆਸ ਕਰੀਜੈ ॥
Everyone longs for paradise, liberation and heaven; all place their hopes in them.
ਹਰਿ ਦਰਸਨ ਕੇ ਜਨ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਮਾਂਗਹਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਦਰਸਨ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਮਨੁ ਧੀਜੈ ॥੧॥
The humble long for the Blessed Vision of His Darshan; they do not ask for liberation. Their minds are satisfied and comforted by His Darshan. ||1||
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਸਬਲੁ ਹੈ ਭਾਰੀ ਮੋਹੁ ਕਾਲਖ ਦਾਗ ਲਗੀਜੈ ॥
Emotional attachment to Maya is very powerful; this attachment is a black stain which sticks.
ਮੇਰੇ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਕੇ ਜਨ ਅਲਿਪਤ ਹੈ ਮੁਕਤੇ ਜਿਉ ਮੁਰਗਾਈ ਪੰਕੁ ਨ ਭੀਜੈ ॥੨॥
The humble servants of my Lord and Master are unattached and liberated. They are like ducks, whose feathers do not get wet. ||2||
ਚੰਦਨ ਵਾਸੁ ਭੁਇਅੰਗਮ ਵੇੜੀ ਕਿਵ ਮਿਲੀਐ ਚੰਦਨੁ ਲੀਜੈ ॥
The fragrant sandalwood tree is encircled by snakes; how can anyone get to the sandalwood?
ਕਾਢਿ ਖੜਗੁ ਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਕਰਾਰਾ ਬਿਖੁ ਛੇਦਿ ਛੇਦਿ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਜੈ ॥੩॥
Drawing out the Mighty Sword of the Guru's Spiritual Wisdom, I slaughter and kill the poisonous snakes, and drink in the Sweet Nectar. ||3||
ਆਨਿ ਆਨਿ ਸਮਧਾ ਬਹੁ ਕੀਨੀ ਪਲੁ ਬੈਸੰਤਰ ਭਸਮ ਕਰੀਜੈ ॥
You may gather wood and stack it in a pile, but in an instant, fire reduces it to ashes.
ਮਹਾ ਉਗ੍ਰ ਪਾਪ ਸਾਕਤ ਨਰ ਕੀਨੇ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਲੂਕੀ ਦੀਜੈ ॥੪॥
The faithless cynic gathers the most horrendous sins, but meeting with the Holy Saint, they are placed in the fire. ||4||
ਸਾਧੂ ਸਾਧ ਸਾਧ ਜਨ ਨੀਕੇ ਜਿਨ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਰੀਜੈ ॥
The Holy, Saintly devotees are sublime and exalted. They enshrine the Naam, the Name of the Lord, deep within.
ਪਰਸ ਨਿਪਰਸੁ ਭਏ ਸਾਧੂ ਜਨ ਜਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਵਾਨੁ ਦਿਖੀਜੈ ॥੫॥
By the touch of the Holy and the humble servants of the Lord, the Lord God is seen. ||5||
ਸਾਕਤ ਸੂਤੁ ਬਹੁ ਗੁਰਝੀ ਭਰਿਆ ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਤਾਨੁ ਤਨੀਜੈ ॥
The thread of the faithless cynic is totally knotted and tangled; how can anything be woven with it?
ਤੰਤੁ ਸੂਤੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਨਿਕਸੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਸਾਕਤ ਸੰਗੁ ਨ ਕੀਜੈ ॥੬॥
This thread cannot be woven into yarn; do not associate with those faithless cynics. ||6||
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਹੈ ਨੀਕੀ ਮਿਲਿ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਰਾਮੁ ਰਵੀਜੈ ॥
The True Guru and the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, are exalted and sublime. Joining the Congregation, meditate on the Lord.
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਰਤਨ ਜਵੇਹਰ ਮਾਣਕ ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਲੀਜੈ ॥੭॥
The gems, jewels and precious stones are deep within; by Guru's Grace, they are found. ||7||
ਮੇਰਾ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਵਡਾ ਵਡਾ ਹੈ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਹਮ ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਮਿਲਹ ਮਿਲੀਜੈ ॥
My Lord and Master is Glorious and Great. How can I be united in His Union?
ਨਾਨਕ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਜਨ ਕਉ ਪੂਰਨੁ ਦੀਜੈ ॥੮॥੨॥
O Nanak, the Perfect Guru unites His humble servant in His Union, and blesses him with perfection. ||8||2||
ਕਲਿਆਨੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥
Kalyaan, Fourth Mahalaa:
ਰਾਮਾ ਰਮ ਰਾਮੋ ਰਾਮੁ ਰਵੀਜੈ ॥
Chant the Name of the Lord, the Lord, the All-pervading Lord.
ਸਾਧੂ ਸਾਧ ਸਾਧ ਜਨ ਨੀਕੇ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗੁ ਕੀਜੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
The Holy, the humble and Holy, are noble and sublime. Meeting with the Holy, I joyfully love the Lord. ||1||Pause||
ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਹੈ ਜੇਤਾ ਮਨੁ ਡੋਲਤ ਡੋਲ ਕਰੀਜੈ ॥
The minds of all the beings and creatures of the world waver unsteadily.
ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਿ ਸਾਧੁ ਮਿਲਾਵਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਥੰਮਨ ਕਉ ਥੰਮੁ ਦੀਜੈ ॥੧॥
Please take pity on them, be merciful to them, and unite them with the Holy; establish this support to support the world. ||1||
ਬਸੁਧਾ ਤਲੈ ਤਲੈ ਸਭ ਊਪਰਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਚਰਨ ਰੁਲੀਜੈ ॥
The earth is beneath us, and yet its dust falls down on all; let yourself be covered by the dust of the feet of the Holy.
ਅਤਿ ਊਤਮ ਅਤਿ ਊਤਮ ਹੋਵਹੁ ਸਭ ਸਿਸਟਿ ਚਰਨ ਤਲ ਦੀਜੈ ॥੨॥
You shall be utterly exalted, the most noble and sublime of all; the whole world will place itself at your feet. ||2||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਭਲੀ ਸਿਵ ਨੀਕੀ ਆਨਿ ਪਾਨੀ ਸਕਤਿ ਭਰੀਜੈ ॥
The Gurmukhs are blessed with the Divine Light of the Lord; Maya comes to serve them.
ਮੈਨਦੰਤ ਨਿਕਸੇ ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ਸਾਰੁ ਚਬਿ ਚਬਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਜੈ ॥੩॥
Through the Word of the Guru's Teachings, they bite with teeth of wax and chew iron, drinking in the Sublime Essence of the Lord. ||3||
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਅਨੁਗ੍ਰਹੁ ਬਹੁ ਕੀਆ ਗੁਰ ਸਾਧੂ ਪੁਰਖ ਮਿਲੀਜੈ ॥
The Lord has shown great mercy, and bestowed His Name; I have met with the Holy Guru, the Primal Being.
ਗੁਨ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਸਥੀਰਨ ਕੀਏ ਹਰਿ ਸਗਲ ਭਵਨ ਜਸੁ ਦੀਜੈ ॥੪॥
The Glorious Praises of the Lord's Name have spread out everywhere; the Lord bestows fame all over the world. ||4||
ਸਾਧੂ ਸਾਧ ਸਾਧ ਮਨਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਦੇਖੇ ਰਹਿ ਨ ਸਕੀਜੈ ॥
The Beloved Lord is within the minds of the Holy, the Holy Saadhus; without seeing Him, they cannot survive.
ਜਿਉ ਜਲ ਮੀਨ ਜਲੰ ਜਲ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਹੈ ਖਿਨੁ ਜਲ ਬਿਨੁ ਫੂਟਿ ਮਰੀਜੈ ॥੫॥
The fish in the water loves only the water. Without water, it bursts and dies in an instant. ||5||
ਮਹਾ ਅਭਾਗ ਅਭਾਗ ਹੈ ਜਿਨ ਕੇ ਤਿਨ ਸਾਧੂ ਧੂਰਿ ਨ ਪੀਜੈ ॥
Those who have terrible luck and bad fortune do not drink in the water which washes the dust of the feet of the Holy.
ਤਿਨਾ ਤਿਸਨਾ ਜਲਤ ਜਲਤ ਨਹੀ ਬੂਝਹਿ ਡੰਡੁ ਧਰਮ ਰਾਇ ਕਾ ਦੀਜੈ ॥੬॥
The burning fire of their desires is not extinguished; they are beaten and punished by the Righteous Judge of Dharma. ||6||
ਸਭਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਬਰਤ ਜਗੵ ਪੁੰਨ ਕੀਏ ਹਿਵੈ ਗਾਲਿ ਗਾਲਿ ਤਨੁ ਛੀਜੈ ॥
You may visit all the sacred shrines, observe fasts and sacred feasts, give generously in charity and waste away the body, melting it in the snow.
ਅਤੁਲਾ ਤੋਲੁ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਕੋ ਪੁਜੈ ਨ ਤੋਲ ਤੁਲੀਜੈ ॥੭॥
The weight of the Lord's Name is unweighable, according to the Guru's Teachings; nothing can equal its weight. ||7||
ਤਵ ਗੁਨ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਤੂ ਜਾਨਹਿ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਰਨਿ ਪਰੀਜੈ ॥
O God, You alone know Your Glorious Virtues. Servant Nanak seeks Your Sanctuary.
ਤੂ ਜਲ ਨਿਧਿ ਮੀਨ ਹਮ ਤੇਰੇ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਸੰਗਿ ਰਖੀਜੈ ॥੮॥੩॥
You are the Ocean of water, and I am Your fish. Please be kind, and keep me always with You. ||8||3||
ਕਲਿਆਨ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥
Kalyaan, Fourth Mahalaa:
ਰਾਮਾ ਰਮ ਰਾਮੋ ਪੂਜ ਕਰੀਜੈ ॥
I worship and adore the Lord, the All-pervading Lord.
ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਅਰਪਿ ਧਰਉ ਸਭੁ ਆਗੈ ਰਸੁ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜੀਜੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
I surrender my mind and body, and place everything before Him; following the Guru's Teachings, spiritual wisdom is implanted within me. ||1||Pause||
ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਨਾਮ ਗੁਣ ਸਾਖ ਤਰੋਵਰ ਨਿਤ ਚੁਨਿ ਚੁਨਿ ਪੂਜ ਕਰੀਜੈ ॥
God's Name is the tree, and His Glorious Virtues are the branches. Picking and gathering up the fruit, I worship Him.
ਆਤਮ ਦੇਉ ਦੇਉ ਹੈ ਆਤਮੁ ਰਸਿ ਲਾਗੈ ਪੂਜ ਕਰੀਜੈ ॥੧॥
The soul is divine; divine is the soul. Worship Him with love. ||1||
ਬਿਬੇਕ ਬੁਧਿ ਸਭ ਜਗ ਮਹਿ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਬਿਚਰਿ ਬਿਚਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਜੈ ॥
One of keen intellect and precise understanding is immaculate in all this world. In thoughtful consideration, he drinks in the sublime essence.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਉ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਦੀਜੈ ॥੨॥
By Guru's Grace, the treasure is found; dedicate this mind to the True Guru. ||2||
ਨਿਰਮੋਲਕੁ ਅਤਿ ਹੀਰੋ ਨੀਕੋ ਹੀਰੈ ਹੀਰੁ ਬਿਧੀਜੈ ॥
Priceless and utterly sublime is the Diamond of the Lord. This Diamond pierces the diamond of the mind.
ਮਨੁ ਮੋਤੀ ਸਾਲੁ ਹੈ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਜਿਤੁ ਹੀਰਾ ਪਰਖਿ ਲਈਜੈ ॥੩॥
The mind becomes the jeweller, through the Word of the Guru's Shabad; it appraises the Diamond of the Lord. ||3||
ਸੰਗਤਿ ਸੰਤ ਸੰਗਿ ਲਗਿ ਊਚੇ ਜਿਉ ਪੀਪ ਪਲਾਸ ਖਾਇ ਲੀਜੈ ॥
Attaching oneself to the Society of the Saints, one is exalted and uplifted, as the palaas tree is absorbed by the peepal tree.
ਸਭ ਨਰ ਮਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ਊਤਮੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੈ ਬਾਸੁ ਬਸੀਜੈ ॥੪॥
That mortal being is supreme among all people, who is perfumed by the fragrance of the Lord's Name. ||4||
ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਕਰਮ ਬਹੁ ਕੀਨੇ ਨਿਤ ਸਾਖਾ ਹਰੀ ਜੜੀਜੈ ॥
One who continually acts in goodness and immaculate purity, sprouts green branches in great abundance.
ਧਰਮੁ ਫੁਲੁ ਫਲੁ ਗੁਰਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਇਆ ਬਹਕਾਰ ਬਾਸੁ ਜਗਿ ਦੀਜੈ ॥੫॥
The Guru has taught me that Dharmic faith is the flower, and spiritual wisdom is the fruit; this fragrance permeates the world. ||5||
ਏਕ ਜੋਤਿ ਏਕੋ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਸਭ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਇਕੁ ਕੀਜੈ ॥
The One, the Light of the One, abides within my mind; God, the One, is seen in all.
ਆਤਮ ਰਾਮੁ ਸਭ ਏਕੈ ਹੈ ਪਸਰੇ ਸਭ ਚਰਨ ਤਲੇ ਸਿਰੁ ਦੀਜੈ ॥੬॥
The One Lord, the Supreme Soul, is spread out everywhere; all place their heads beneath His Feet. ||6||
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਨਕਟੇ ਨਰ ਦੇਖਹੁ ਤਿਨ ਘਸਿ ਘਸਿ ਨਾਕ ਵਢੀਜੈ ॥
Without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, people look like criminals with their noses cut off; bit by bit, their noses are cut off.
ਸਾਕਤ ਨਰ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ਕਹੀਅਹਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਜੀਵੀਜੈ ॥੭॥
The faithless cynics are called egotistical; without the Name, their lives are cursed. ||7||
ਜਬ ਲਗੁ ਸਾਸੁ ਸਾਸੁ ਮਨ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਤਤੁ ਬੇਗਲ ਸਰਨਿ ਪਰੀਜੈ ॥
As long as the breath breathes through the mind deep within, hurry and seek God's Sanctuary.
ਨਾਨਕ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਿ ਧਾਰਹੁ ਮੈ ਸਾਧੂ ਚਰਨ ਪਖੀਜੈ ॥੮॥੪॥
Please shower Your Kind Mercy and take pity upon Nanak, that he may wash the feet of the Holy. ||8||4||
ਕਲਿਆਨ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥
Kalyaan, Fourth Mahalaa:
ਰਾਮਾ ਮੈ ਸਾਧੂ ਚਰਨ ਧੁਵੀਜੈ ॥
O Lord, I wash the feet of the Holy.
ਕਿਲਬਿਖ ਦਹਨ ਹੋਹਿ ਖਿਨ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮੇਰੇ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕੀਜੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
May my sins be burnt away in an instant; O my Lord and Master, please bless me with Your Mercy. ||1||Pause||
ਮੰਗਤ ਜਨ ਦੀਨ ਖਰੇ ਦਰਿ ਠਾਢੇ ਅਤਿ ਤਰਸਨ ਕਉ ਦਾਨੁ ਦੀਜੈ ॥
The meek and humble beggars stand begging at Your Door. Please be generous and give to those who are yearning.
ਤ੍ਰਾਹਿ ਤ੍ਰਾਹਿ ਸਰਨਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਆਏ ਮੋ ਕਉ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜੀਜੈ ॥੧॥
Save me, save me, O God - I have come to Your Sanctuary. Please implant the Guru's Teachings, and the Naam within me. ||1||
ਕਾਮ ਕਰੋਧੁ ਨਗਰ ਮਹਿ ਸਬਲਾ ਨਿਤ ਉਠਿ ਉਠਿ ਜੂਝੁ ਕਰੀਜੈ ॥
Sexual desire and anger are very powerful in the body-village; I rise up to fight the battle against them.
ਅੰਗੀਕਾਰੁ ਕਰਹੁ ਰਖਿ ਲੇਵਹੁ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰਾ ਕਾਢਿ ਕਢੀਜੈ ॥੨॥
Please make me Your Own and save me; through the Perfect Guru, I drive them out. ||2||
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਅਗਨਿ ਸਬਲ ਅਤਿ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਹਿਵ ਸੀਤਲੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਗੁਰ ਦੀਜੈ ॥
The powerful fire of corruption is raging violently within; the Word of the Guru's Shabad is the ice water which cools and soothes.
ਤਨਿ ਮਨਿ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਅਧਿਕਾਈ ਰੋਗੁ ਕਾਟੈ ਸੂਖਿ ਸਵੀਜੈ ॥੩॥
My mind and body are calm and tranquil; the disease has been cured, and now I sleep in peace. ||3||
ਜਿਉ ਸੂਰਜੁ ਕਿਰਣਿ ਰਵਿਆ ਸਰਬ ਠਾਈ ਸਭ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਰਾਮੁ ਰਵੀਜੈ ॥
As the rays of the sun spread out everywhere, the Lord pervades each and every heart.
ਸਾਧੂ ਸਾਧ ਮਿਲੇ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਤਤੁ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਬੈਠਿਆ ਪੀਜੈ ॥੪॥
Meeting the Holy Saint, one drinks in the Sublime Essence of the Lord; sitting in the home of your own inner being, drink in the essence. ||4||
ਜਨ ਕਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਲਗੀ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਤੀ ਜਿਉ ਚਕਵੀ ਦੇਖਿ ਸੂਰੀਜੈ ॥
The humble being is in love with the Guru, like the chakvi bird which loves to see the sun.
ਨਿਰਖਤ ਨਿਰਖਤ ਰੈਨਿ ਸਭ ਨਿਰਖੀ ਮੁਖੁ ਕਾਢੈ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਜੈ ॥੫॥
She watches, and keeps on watching all through the night; and when the sun shows its face, she drinks in the Amrit. ||5||
ਸਾਕਤ ਸੁਆਨ ਕਹੀਅਹਿ ਬਹੁ ਲੋਭੀ ਬਹੁ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਭਰੀਜੈ ॥
The faithless cynic is said to be very greedy - he is a dog. He is overflowing with the filth and pollution of evil-mindedness.
ਆਪਨ ਸੁਆਇ ਕਰਹਿ ਬਹੁ ਬਾਤਾ ਤਿਨਾ ਕਾ ਵਿਸਾਹੁ ਕਿਆ ਕੀਜੈ ॥੬॥
He talks excessively about his own interests. How can he be trusted? ||6||
ਸਾਧੂ ਸਾਧ ਸਰਨਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਜਿਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਕਾਢਿ ਕਢੀਜੈ ॥
I have sought the Sanctuary of the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy; I have found the Sublime Essence of the Lord.
ਪਰਉਪਕਾਰ ਬੋਲਹਿ ਬਹੁ ਗੁਣੀਆ ਮੁਖਿ ਸੰਤ ਭਗਤ ਹਰਿ ਦੀਜੈ ॥੭॥
They do good deeds for others, and speak of the Lord's many Glorious Virtues; please bless me to meet these Saints, these devotees of the Lord. ||7||
ਤੂ ਅਗਮ ਦਇਆਲ ਦਇਆ ਪਤਿ ਦਾਤਾ ਸਭ ਦਇਆ ਧਾਰਿ ਰਖਿ ਲੀਜੈ ॥
You are the Inaccessible Lord, Kind and Compassionate, the Great Giver; please shower us with Your Mercy, and save us.
ਸਰਬ ਜੀਅ ਜਗਜੀਵਨੁ ਏਕੋ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲ ਕਰੀਜੈ ॥੮॥੫॥
You are the Life of all the beings of the world; please cherish and sustain Nanak. ||8||5||
ਕਲਿਆਨੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥
Kalyaan, Fourth Mahalaa:
ਰਾਮਾ ਹਮ ਦਾਸਨ ਦਾਸ ਕਰੀਜੈ ॥
O Lord, please make me the slave of Your slaves.
ਜਬ ਲਗਿ ਸਾਸੁ ਹੋਇ ਮਨ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਧੂਰਿ ਪਿਵੀਜੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
As long as there is breath deep within my mind, let me drink in the dust of the Holy. ||1||Pause||
ਸੰਕਰੁ ਨਾਰਦੁ ਸੇਖਨਾਗ ਮੁਨਿ ਧੂਰਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਕੀ ਲੋਚੀਜੈ ॥
Shiva, Naarad, the thousand-headed cobra king and the silent sages long for the dust of the Holy.
ਭਵਨ ਭਵਨ ਪਵਿਤੁ ਹੋਹਿ ਸਭਿ ਜਹ ਸਾਧੂ ਚਰਨ ਧਰੀਜੈ ॥੧॥
All the worlds and realms where the Holy place their feet are sanctified. ||1||
ਤਜਿ ਲਾਜ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ਸਭੁ ਤਜੀਐ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਸੰਗਿ ਰਹੀਜੈ ॥
So let go of your shame and renounce all your egotism; join with the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, and remain there.
ਧਰਮ ਰਾਇ ਕੀ ਕਾਨਿ ਚੁਕਾਵੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਡੁਬਦਾ ਕਾਢਿ ਕਢੀਜੈ ॥੨॥
Give up your fear of the Righteous Judge of Dharma, and you shall be lifted up and saved from drowning in the sea of poison. ||2||
ਭਰਮਿ ਸੂਕੇ ਬਹੁ ਉਭਿ ਸੁਕ ਕਹੀਅਹਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਸੰਗਿ ਹਰੀਜੈ ॥
Some are standing, parched and shrivelled up by their doubts; joining the Saadh Sangat, they are rejuvenated.
ਤਾ ਤੇ ਬਿਲਮੁ ਪਲੁ ਢਿਲ ਨ ਕੀਜੈ ਜਾਇ ਸਾਧੂ ਚਰਨਿ ਲਗੀਜੈ ॥੩॥
So do not delay, even for an instant - go and fall at the feet of the Holy. ||3||
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਕੀਰਤਨ ਰਤਨ ਵਥੁ ਹਰਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਪਾਸਿ ਰਖੀਜੈ ॥
The Kirtan of the Praise of the Lord's Name is a priceless jewel. The Lord has given it for the Holy to keep.
ਜੋ ਬਚਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਤਿ ਸਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਮਾਨੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਆਗੈ ਕਾਢਿ ਧਰੀਜੈ ॥੪॥
Whoever accepts and follows the Word of the Guru's Teachings as True - this Jewel is taken out and given to him. ||4||
ਸੰਤਹੁ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਜਨ ਭਾਈ ਗੁਰਿ ਕਾਢੀ ਬਾਹ ਕੁਕੀਜੈ ॥
Listen, O Saints; listen, humble Siblings of Destiny: the Guru raises His Arms and sends out the call.
ਜੇ ਆਤਮ ਕਉ ਸੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਨਿਤ ਲੋੜਹੁ ਤਾਂ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਰਨਿ ਪਵੀਜੈ ॥੫॥
If you long for everlasting peace and comfort for your soul, then enter the Sanctuary of the True Guru. ||5||
ਜੇ ਵਡਭਾਗੁ ਹੋਇ ਅਤਿ ਨੀਕਾ ਤਾਂ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜੀਜੈ ॥
If you have great good fortune and are very noble, then implant the Guru's Teachings and the Naam, the Name of the Lord, within.
ਸਭੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਬਿਖਮੁ ਜਗੁ ਤਰੀਐ ਸਹਜੇ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਜੈ ॥੬॥
Emotional attachment to Maya is totally treacherous; drinking in the Sublime Essence of the Lord, you shall easily, intuitively cross over the world-ocean. ||6||
ਮਾਇਆ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੇ ਜੋ ਅਧਿਕਾਈ ਵਿਚਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਪਚੈ ਪਚੀਜੈ ॥
Those who are totally in love with Maya, Maya, shall rot away in Maya.
ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ਅੰਧੇਰੁ ਮਹਾ ਪੰਥੁ ਬਿਖੜਾ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਿ ਭਾਰਿ ਲਦਿ ਲੀਜੈ ॥੭॥
The path of ignorance and darkness is utterly treacherous; they are loaded down with the crushing load of egotism. ||7||
ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਮ ਰਮ ਰਮੁ ਰਮ ਰਮ ਰਾਮੈ ਤੇ ਗਤਿ ਕੀਜੈ ॥
O Nanak, chanting the Name of the Lord, the All-pervading Lord, one is emancipated.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਏ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੈ ਰਲੈ ਮਿਲੀਜੈ ॥੮॥੬॥ ਛਕਾ ੧ ॥
Meeting the True Guru, the Naam is implanted within; we are united and blended with the Lord's Name. ||8||6|| First Set of Six
